A POSITIVE culture, good work ethic and never say die attitude are the ingredients for Sydney Cricket Club's high standing at the halfway mark of the 2012-13 Sydney grade competition. The much improved Tigers enter the New Year on a confident note after post ing impressive victories throughout the five grades and Poidevin-Gray Shield competition in the lead in to the festive season. With an infusion of young talent and steely determination, the Sydney contingent have come of age with stout-hearted performances to date and remain entrenched in third spot on the Club Championship ladder on 904 points behind leaders St George (1 007) and second placed Sutherland (994). Under the astute leadership of experi enced batsman Tim Sparke, the Tigers' first grade X1 are currently placed fourth after nine rounds and playing a fine brand of cricket. Buoyed by their sterling efforts, the Sydney club currently leads the fourth grade competition and are placed fifth in second grade; ninth in third grade and fourth in the fifth grade series. According to Tigers' Head Coach Richard Burton the players have applied themselves from the outset stepping up to the mark with spirited performances in the first half of the summer. "They've produced some tough cricket on the field and are reaping the rewards for the hard work put in over the past few months," said Burton, a former top grade stalwart, who has instilled a strong work ethic at the Drummoyne Oval base. " Duri ng December we had a keen focus on the pre-Christmas run and the players responded by claiming plenty of points -

Around the Wickets with CHRIS KARAS 18 in firsts; 20 in seconds; 25 in thirds; 18 in fourths and 19 in fifths - which proved a just reward ." "We have some exciting talent coming through the ranks and all team members are contributing to our victories," he added. Sydney's hard-fought wins over Parramatta in first, third and fifth grade prior to the Christmas break typified the character shown. All rounder Nathan Robertson-Ball and keeper Sam Mullens starred in the Tigers' 42-run top grade triumph at Drummoyne Oval - with Robertson-Ball carving out a career best 96 off 11 0 ball s and Mullens a valuable 39. The pair shared a crucial stand of 100 for the seventh wicket after Sydney recovered from a disastrous 6-34 to post 9-1 88. Robertson-Ball clouted 12 boundaries and a six - then snared 3-28 in a fiery eight over spell with support from paceman Angus Moncrieff (3-32) and leg spinner Charlie Sayers (2-33) to skittle Parramatta for 146 in the 41st over. Six Tigers' players also featured in a Twenty20 practice match for the SCG X1 against the world champion Sydney Sixers last week at Drummoyne Oval. Young guns Manjot Singh, Tristan McDonald, Jono Smith, Anthony Mosca, Ryan Felsh and quick Matt White lined up to help the SCG X1 upset the Sixers side that included powerhitting Ti gers' batsman Daniel Smith.

SYDNEY University Vets enjoyed the Christmas cheer after accounting for Hunters Hill in the City & Suburban Cricket competition. The Vets won the toss and batted on a deteriorating pitch and were soon struggling at 6-44 after 16 overs with the prolific Tim Overland snaring five of the wickets while conceding only nine runs. But as in their previous encounter, Sydney Uni tend to have a reverse batting order and went on to post 138 by the end of their 32 overs. Hunters Hill's other three bowlers Jorden Butler, Ben Wearing and Andrew Hill each picked up a wicket for the cost of 30 runs. You know you're in for a tough day when your opening batsman cracks one to backward square leg and the fielder sticks out his hand and grasps a catch. Soon after the Hillies were 2-1. The only entertaining part of the innings was the father and son partnership of "Hilly" and Will who put on 13 before "thanks dad" Will was tragically run out with Hunters Hill well short of the mark in the batting department.

at half back and hooker kept the Shamrocks in finals contention and earned him the club 's Best & Fairest Player award. A change of scenery has proved the right tonic for 18 year old Jarvis, who linked with the Shamrocks back in 2010 after tasting premiership success with the powerful Holy Cross club. Shae is a Rhinos' junior product who played alongside boom Wests Tigers and Australian Schoolboys half back Luke Brooks in six Balmain Junior League championship sides. Jarvis began his career as a 4 year old and spent 12 fruitful seasons with the Rhinos before the team disbanded, prompting a move to Dundas for the nippy utility half. Shae's talent was recognised by representative selectors when named in the Balmain U/13, U/14 and 15 Development squads before pulling on a Shamrocks jumper. He's proved an asset for the Dundas club these past three sea-
