The last semester was another stepping stone for success in the Department of Biotechnology, Heritage Institute of Technology. Its progress and breakthroughs propose a promising picture which will leave nobody in doubt about the Department’s excellence if one examines the statistics put forward here. On a self-congratulatory note the department brings forth another edition of the newsletter highlighting a glittering view of what came to pass and how it has changed and brought the department to the forefront. Newer ventures, changes, breakthroughs, publications, intradepartmental masterminded activities seem overshadowed by the remarkable performance of the GATE candidates this year. Of the 30 prestigious rank holders of our department, the statistics prove beyond doubt of our steady input of achievements from all years: B. Tech, M. Tech, as well as the pass outs. The success of the 3rd year B.Tech Shounak Banerjee (GATE All India Rank: 20) proves beyond doubt the ability of our students

to fore-plan their career and venture into unbidden success and surpass all. Archita Ghoshal (AIR: 200), Reeshab Goenka ( AIR: 335) top the unending picture. Sayani Das (AIR: 24) rose from among lakhs of candidates and has topped the GATE candidates from B. Tech 4th Year along with fellow students Anwesha Ghosh (AIR: 33), Ishita Paul (AIR: 89), Mishtu Mukherjeee (AIR: 119) making it to the top cream of a long list. M. Editorial The Department of Biotechnology, HITK has been our home for three years now – a sufficiently long time to know and understand the nooks and crannies of BBuilding as well as the temperaments of each of our teachers! However, it is not enough time to understand the vast subject of biotechnology and its ever-expanding reach into its neighbouring sciences. Nevertheless, the past academic year was one of much advancement within and outside of the department. The departmental teachers’ work was published in various reputed scientific journals and they participated in several conferences, both national and international. On the other hand, the students participated in seminars, workshops and programmes dedicated to the biosciences. In every one of these programmes, our students and teachers shone brightly as beacons of knowledge and future greats in the field of biotechnology. Within the college, our students have shown that they do not box themselves in the realm of academia. The Annual Sports Day saw the students of the department come back victoriously with many prizes and accolades. The students also participated in the tech fest of the college, Dakshh ’10 and won quite a few prizes! So do enjoy reading through Bio-Sys’ second issue – which could not have been possible without the support of Prof. Subhabrata Sengupta, Mr. Riddhi Goswami and Dr. Srabanti Basu as well as the rest of the faculty and their encouragement. Saurabh Kumar Singh & T.C.A. Lakshmi Narasimhan. 3rd Year, Biotechnology.
