I Went to the Woods

I went to the woods when the leaves were new.

I walked as they glistened with drops of dew,

When those who had come to the woods were few,

My heart was lull of singing.

I went to the woods when the leaves were green.

They whispered above me. The sylvan scene

Was filled with fine creepers and bushes pristine

In nature freely growing.

I went to the woods when the leaves were gold.

And yellow, and orange, and red. These bold.

Gay colors, in season, had lost their hold.

The forest now was dying.

I went to the woods when the leaves were brown.

They crunched and they rustled. The golden crown

The forest had worn had now been cast down.

And all the winds cried, mourning.

I went to the woods when the leaves were gone

And looked at the landscape now starkly drawn.

The canvas of white it was inked upon,

And one lone leaf still hanging.
