This month, we have Miss Earth Singapore 2015 Tiara Hadi on the cover. Miss Earth not only glorifies beauty, it also helps spread awareness on improving the development of the environment–a cause that’s dear to my heart. November always puts me in a preChristmas mood… my favorite season: fall, Thanksgiving, and the best shades of orange. PSL anyone? It’s a transitional month and it marks the nearing end of 2015, which makes it bittersweet. Inside, we prove how much fun fashion can be via a 30 day style hack that’s sure to inject the excitement back into everyday dressing. We’ve also compiled our top designers to keep an eye on and as an homage to my favorite movie genre--a guide on how to dress up practically and of course, chic for a zombie apocalypse. Our look book and shop page focuses on how to channel a modern Audrey Hepburn in the digital age and bringing back MOD. What are you waiting for, here’s to you our style savy reader!

DEBORAH FERRERO FASHION BLOGGER

www.stylebydeb.com deborah@stylebydeb.com facebook.com/stylebydeb @stylebydeb @stylebydeb pinterest.com/stylebydeb

Q: Can you share with us a bit of the background of your blog? I launched my fashion blog Style by Deb back in 2013; the idea was sharing my passion for fashion with people around the globe whether by showing my outfits or writing articles about the latest trends. I was eager to connect with other fashionistas as I live in a rather small city, where there’s not such a thing as a big fashion industry. Q: Why did you decide to start a blog? I’ve been an avid reader of fashion blogs for years before making the decision of

creating my own. However, I guess the breaking point was in the middle of my studying courses, when I realized I wasn’t happy with my career choices and all I wanted was to be a part of the fashion industry, and blogging felt like a natural way to start my journey. Q: Why did you choose to decide to focus on fashion? I think fashion has so much to offer! I find it fun, creative, artistic, inspiring… I do have other interests in my life but fashion is something I could talk about for ages and never get tired of it! Career-wise, this is the way I see it: music was my first love… but I’m married to fashion. ;)

Q: With the number of fashion blogs popping up, what makes your blog different? In terms of style I don’t think myself as a “fashion victim” so you’ll quickly notice in my blog that I’m true to myself. I do play with different styles, constantly, but I only take what I really like from trends. Plus, living in a small city where we don’t even have a Zara pushes me to be creative AND trendy at the same time. Quite a challenge!! Q: What for you is the best thing about being a fashion blogger? There are many things I love about fashion blogging, one of them is being able to connect with so many different people from so many different countries in a way that I couldn’t have done otherwise. Also, you learn a lot by being a fashion blogger: photography, html codes, web design, statistics, pr, social media management… Being a blogger is multitasking and that’s great! Q: What is the best and worst feedback / comment you have received so far? People say if you have haters it means that you’ve made it in the internet, well then, apparently I haven’t made it quite yet because I don’t have any haters! I just received one random comment once on my blog’s Facebook fanpage from a girl who clearly didn’t like my outfit and wrote something like ‘What’s THAT?!’, LOL.

As for the best feedback or comment… I’ve been lucky enough to receive many positive comments from day one! I can’t think of one particular comment but I do remember being compared once to Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and although it was too much, I kind of like it because that was one of my fave TV characters ever! Q: I’m sure there are many aspiring bloggers out there. Do you have any advice for them? My advice to any new or aspiring blogger would be “Have fun”. Yes, the blogosphere can be very competitive but the most important thing here is having fun while doing something you like. The first months (or years!) of a blog can be really tough and I can assure you that if you don’t enjoy doing this then you’ll soon miss the whole point of it. Q: Complete this sentence: “My style is…” Contrasting! I love my biker leather jacket as much as I love wearing a pink girly dress. I love embracing different styles instead of sticking with only one. Q: Complete this sentence: “People should visit my blog because…” It’s fun! You’ll find OOTDs, articles about trends, some lifestyles posts and, oh! Did I mention that I write my posts in English and Spanish? :) Q: Any last words? Just a big THANK YOU to the SAUCEink team for this amazing opportunity and to all of you guys who are reading this! Remember “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” ;) xoxo

Q: Why did you decide to start a blog? A blog is a combination of everything that speaks to me: writing, design, photography, and creative selfexpression. Q: Why did you choose to decide to focus on fashion? When I started my blog in 2010, I had already been working in fashion and media for five years. The greats all say, write what you know. They also say, do what you love. Fashion it is.

E

Q: Can you share with us a bit of the background of your blog? Love Chic is a celebration of style that warms the heart. It’s similar to many fashion blogs in that it features trends in clothes, accessories, make-up, and DIY. It’s different from many fashion blogs in that it also features essays on personal growth, faith, family, friendships, and current events. I also do videos of myself singing covers and playing instruments. Q: With the number of fashion blogs popping up, what makes your blog different? It started out as a his-and-hers fashion blog where I would style the “his” outfit to complement the “hers” outfit. It was one of the very few of its kind in the world, so that’s what used to be the biggest difference. These days, that aspect is gone, but the other things that remain still set Love Chic apart from the rest: I imbue personal values into the fashion posts I do. Readers can write to me in private about their problems and makeover questions. I offer tips for students or young professionals on how to look great without spending hard-earned money on unnecessarily expensive items. I write commentaries on current topics that are relevant to Filipnio youth. Basically, I would like for readers to be inspired by more than just the fashion.

hecklers about who I supposedly am and what I supposedly did, but I never choose to focus on those. Q: I’m sure there are many aspiring bloggers out there. Do you have any advice for them? Do it only because it makes you happy, not because you hope to be famous or to get freebies and event invites. This will seem so cliché, but I can say for a fact that when I temporarily veered away from my own advice, I became miserable and welcomed a lot of negativity into my life. Honestly, the times I enjoy a bit of success as a blogger are always the times I don’t care about these things. Whenever I started to care, it tends to become about the competition or about who gets more of what. So do try to stay away from that mindset as much as possible.Doing it because it makes you happy will also ensure that you will willingly learn as much as you can without getting tired or pressured or bored. Blogging should be fun, above all else. Q: Complete this sentence: “My style is…” My style is a combination of Filipino sensibility, Korean effortless cool, Parisian chic, and New Yorker edge. I just made it up right now, but I think that’s pretty much it in a sentence.

Q: What for you is the best thing about being a fashion blogger?

Q: Complete this sentence: “People should visit my blog because…”

The best thing about being a fashion blogger is having a creative outlet and a platform on which you get to share and swap stories with like-minded people.

It’s a happy place with something for everyone.

Q: What is the best and worst feedback / comment you have received so far?

I’ve been in fashion for a decade and I’ve had success and failure, fans and bullies, genuine friends and traitorous rivals—all without which I would not be where I am. Dear readers, lest you be disillusioned, it won’t always be as perfect as the Instagramfiltered pictures. Embrace the good with the bad, stick with people who truly love you, and you’ll be fine.

The best comments are from students who write to me to say I make a difference in their lives, in terms of making decisions suchas what course or career path to take or how to deal with a break-up. The worst comments are judgments from non-reader

Q: Any last words?

MISS EARTH SINGAPORE 2015:

Mixing Green and Glamour Together BY JANELLE YAU

“Not just another typical beauty pageant.” Miss Earth Singapore is one of the most popular beauty pageants that the whole world is tuning into, but unlike other pageants Miss Earth stands for a powerful cause driven by the ultimate goal to increase people’s awareness and improving the sustainable development of the environment. Miss Earth Singapore prides itself as a pageant with an integral mix of green and glamour; a pageant that glories beauty, but one that strongly nurtures its cause at the same time. With activities and specific projects addressing the different local issues from school tours, tree planting activities, street campaigns to eco-fashion shows and shopping mall tours, Miss Earth Singapore chooses to crown not just a beautiful face, but women with beautiful hearts and the burning passion to save the earth; proving that anyone can stand for a cause, get down and dirty, while still doing it all in style. Lucky for us, we’ve got that chance to sit down with the four queens of Miss Earth Singapore to talk about their victories, their style, and what they plan to do after their run with Miss Earth Singapore.

TIARA HADI MISS EARTH SINGAPORE 2015

The common misconception about beauty queens is that they’re all about beauty and glamour alone, but Tiara Hadi breaks this misconception and uses her win as a chance for her to bring more awareness to the issues that are most important to her. Proving that

indeed you can have it allbeauty to brains, Tiara is the kind of girl who may be laid-back, but will definitely not hesitate to take matters into her own hands and make the impossible happen --- starting with her win as Ms. Earth Singapore 2015.

What made you join Ms. Earth Singapore? I think for me the pageant was more to than just standing there looking pretty and talking about world peace. In a world where you’re only as good as your name, who’s going to listen to the opinions of an average girl from the suburbs? I joined Ms. Earth Singapore because I wanted to use it as a platform to bring about more awareness to issues that matter to me. I also wanted greater exposure to what exactly is happening not only in Singapore but all around the world, and so far it’s been an eye opening journey for me. When I was younger, I wanted to change the world, but now that I’m older I know that I might not be able to, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t still try to make a difference and I believe that I can. What do you feel after successfully garnering the title of Ms. Earth? There’s a lot of attention around you once you become a title winner and for someone who’s been living under a rock, it takes a bit of getting used to. I still find it very strange when people refer to me as Ms Earth, it still feels rather surreal. Other than that I feel that this is just the start for me, I have a lot to learn and I’m very fortunate to have people to guide me along the way. I intend my reign to be one filled with community work and a greater involvement in society. I want people to move away from the thinking that pageant queens are just about a pretty face. I’m not here for the recognition or the fame. I’m here to do the work.

Who was your source of inspiration when you joined Ms. Earth?

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

I didn’t exactly have a figure that made me want to join the competition, but I do have a list of people whose stories inspire me. One of my biggest inspirations is Ethel Kennedy, the wife of the late Robert F. Kennedy. Known mostly for her vivacious, bubbly and sometimes mischievous personality, the press loved her good humoured nature. Together with her husband, they were at the forefront of change, supporting the growing Civil Rights movement in America at that time. She stood by her husband, supporting him while he was out campaigning. When he was assassinated in 1968, she singlehandedly took on the role of raising their 11 children and continued her husband’s work, devoting herself to public service and ultimately giving back to the people. An allrounded woman, she embodies the kind of woman I’d like to be.

I once heard this quote and I feel it might be apt, “She’s like a great mountain covered in snow, only that that mountain is in fact a volcano.”

How did you prepare for the competition? I honestly didn’t really prepare a whole lot for it. I didn’t think I was going to win it, so I just enjoyed the experience. I kept up to date with current affairs and environmental campaigns and attended the training classes held by the previous winners. They taught us poise and how to work the stage. I’m not a model, so whatever piece of advice they could offer to ensure I don’t end up falling face flat on the ground was all very helpful. How excited are you to represent Singapore in Austria? I have mixed feelings! I’m super excited to meet all the other queens. They look like they’re beautiful and smart women and I feel that we can learn a lot from each other. On the other hand, I’m really anxious as it is a month away and there’s still so much to prepare! I know everything will work itself out in the end and I’m looking forward to having a fun time in Vienna!

On a lazy day, what would the people see Ms. Earth 2015 wearing? Hair tied up in a bun, sporting an oversized shirt and sweatpants or just plain ol’ jammies. I must admit that I actually do leave the house in them from time to time like when I visit the animal shelter, or when I’m going downstairs to the wet market with my mom. She finds it funny and loves referring to me as her Indian maid when I do that, so I play along and act the part. When I was in Cameron Highlands last month, I pulled a Kim Kardashian and had hotel pyjama run with no makeup on. I plan on doing it again when I’m in Vienna with some of the other contestants and will post pictures of it on my website, so watch out for those! What was your favourite fashion trend from two years ago? I’m not one who actually pays attention to fashion trends to be honest, I usually get pieces that work with my body type and contrasts well against my skin colour. Who is Ms. Earth Singapore 2015’s style icon? Victoria Beckham. I was a bit upset that I couldn’t make it to her show during Singapore Fashion Week because all the tickets were sold out! I love her bold pieces that strike just the right balance between masculinity and femininity. They make a statement and they’re classy at the same time. I’d love to be able to own at least one VB dress in my lifetime.

What are your plans after your stint with Ms. Earth? To eat as much as I possibly can! I’m kidding! Well I hope that I’ll be able to continue on this path as an activist and ultimately doing what I love to do - humanitarian work. There’s a great sense of fulfilment for me in giving back like I always say, ask not what the world has to offer you but what do you have to offer the world? What is your advice for young women who want to be like you? Why would you want to be me when you can be you! The most powerful and key person in your life is you. There is more to life than just looks because anyone can be pretty. Choose to instead be pretty intelligent, pretty creative or even pretty amazing, but never just merely pretty.

ELIZABETH LEE MISS EARTH SINGAPORE 2015, AIR

Armed with her passion for the environment, confidence in her capabilities, and her beauty Elizabeth joined Ms. Earth Singapore with the hopes of being able to start a spark that will start a movement towards environmental change while still looking fabulous in her sexy high heels.

What made you join Miss Earth Singapore? Global warming is a subject that has always been close to my heart and I saw how Miss Earth Singapore is the perfect avenue for me to express my worrying concerns for the environment. The pageant has a unique concept of promoting environmental awareness that made it entirely different from the other major international beauty pageants and that drew me to join Miss Earth Singapore. Have you always pictured yourself joining pageantry? Since I was young I have always felt that I was able to differentiate myself (in a positive way) from my peers. Joining a beauty pageant was a natural turn of events for me, as beauty pageants emphasize individualism in order to bring out the best in ourselves.

If you did not join Miss Earth, what would you want to pursue? I would want to become a director/principal instructor of my own pole dance studio. Pole dancing is a niche sport in Singapore which is starting to gain a huge traction. I would love to increase the awareness and multiple benefits of this dance sport by inspiring ladies and men of all ages to express confidence through pole dancing.

On a lazy day, what would the people see Miss Earth Singapore Air 2015 wearing? An oversized t-shirt with a pair of cotton socks. That’s all. To me, it’s the perfect attire for snuggling in bed during weekends! What was your favourite fashion trend from two years ago?

Winning the title - Miss Earth Singapore (Air-2015) definitely made me more aware regarding the extensive environmental issues have been plaguing our society.

I was in Melbourne pursuing my degree in business accounting back then. Living in Australia’s fashion capital, people were so stylish no matter what day it was and at that time I was no different. I paired trench coats with pantyhose and high boots to channel Victorian elegance and to protect myself from Melbourne’s brutal winter all the while looking as extremely stylish as the locals.

Who was your source of inspiration when you joined Miss Earth Singapore?

What are the three things that Miss Earth Singapore Air 2015 cannot live without?

The winner of Miss Universe Singapore 2009 Rachel Kum - to me is the perfect embodiment of beauty and brains. She successfully used her name and image to create her own beauty line, and also became an active participant of volunteerism. I joined Miss Earth Singapore in the hopes of following her footsteps and inspiring other young girls to make a name for themselves yet unconditionally giving back to society.

I can’t live without my phone which contains my busy schedule, my 7 inch pole dancing heels, and my hand carry cosmetic pouch that keeps me looking fresh all day long!

How did winning the title Miss Earth Singapore Air 2015 change you?

What other advocacy are you interested in apart from environment? Another cause that I am interested in championing would be animal welfare. Reckless human activity is leading to the extinction of animal species and habitats, which causes the loss of bio-diversity.

What are your plans after your stint with Miss Earth 2015? I hope to initiate a project that would allow the access of electricity to poor and underdeveloped areas through sustainable means such as solar power. This would tremendously reduce our reliance on fossil fuel consumptions. Thus, reducing air pollution created from our energy usage.

MICHELLE KOH MISS EARTH SINGAPORE 2015, WATER

Model, beauty queen, fashionista, and a fighter Michelle Koh is ready to make the difference that she has always aspired to do in the world with a full heart, her one of a kind energy, and her passion to make change and to be the change that the world needs.

What made you join Ms. Earth Singapore? I decided to join because Ms. Earth Singapore is unlike any other beauty pageants here in Singapore. I feel that I am able to show more of my personality in this pageant which is good because I believe that the most important thing is to just be yourself. Have you always pictured yourself joining pageantry? Not at all! I’ve been a part of the modelling industry since 2011, so I thought of going to the next level by joining pageants. My first pageant was Miss Bikini Singapore 2012. Back then I wanted to expose myself to the pageant industry just to see how it’s like. I also heard that my mom was once a contestant of Miss Singapore Universe during her days which made me want to pursue pageantry even more.

If you did not join Ms. Earth what would you want to pursue?

On a lazy day, what would the people see Ms. Water 2015 wearing?

If I did not join Miss Earth, I would have continued to pursue my career in the fashion industry. Besides that, I would also continue to do a few voluntary works to help kids, animals, the environment and people.

I would be seen either with a black oversized shirt and denim shorts, or just a normal oversized little black dress.

How did winning the title Ms. Water 2015 change you? Attending events after events! My schedule certainly changed from a life of a simple girl next door to a glitz and glamour I’ve seen only in the movies. Who was your source of inspiration when you joined Ms. Earth? Videos of hurt animals and sea creatures on land and in the ocean inspired me to join Ms. Earth. Seeing the videos about hurt animals made me want to protect the endangered species. How do you plan on using your title to inspire others to be more environmental friendly? I plan on joining activities or have an event to bring the public together and let the public be involved in learning more about our earth, environment and the world disasters. I believe by bringing people together, we can do a lot of great things!

What was your favorite fashion trend from two years ago? I don’t really follow trends as I like to create my own trend according to the season. My wardrobe is mostly black, a little white, grey and nudes as I like to keep it minimal. If you can rock only one trend for the rest of your life, what would it be? Definitely the trends during the holiday season! What are your plans after your stint with Ms. Earth 2015? I plan to continue helping animals and the environment after my stint with Ms. Earth 2015.

BIANCHE HONOR MISS EARTH SINGAPORE 2015, FIRE

Bianche has always dreamt of entering the world of pageantry, but this time around instead of just dreaming about it like she always does, she mustered up the courage to fill up the application, join Ms. Earth Singapore, and follow her dreams, and look at where her fearlessness has led her today. With a feisty personality and ambitious dreams, Bianche shows us that indeed she is a girl on fire.

What made you join Miss Earth Singapore? I have always aspired to be a glamorous representative of Singapore with good moral character, and this time around I believed that I fit the bill so I decided to fill in my application form and apply for Miss Earth Singapore. Have you always pictured yourself joining pageantry? Yes, I have actually. I have always dreamt of joining beauty pageants, but lacked the courage to do so. However, coming upon the realization that we have limited years in life and finally deciding that I want to make a change in my life, I took the plunge. If you did not join Miss Earth, what would you want to pursue? I would still pursue my pageantry dreams such as joining other pageants. How did winning the title of Ms. Fire 2015 change you? It has kick-started my quarter-century years with a powerful boost in the positive direction. For starters, I gained an inner confidence that now cannot be vanquished easily. I know that I have put in the hard work and paid my dues to achieve this title, and it gives me confidence. Winning the title reminds me that anything that I wish to achieve can become possible and created through my own efforts. This confidence has manifested in the way I carry myself and groom myself now. Winning the title of Ms. Fire 2015 has definitely been a huge achievement for me.

Who was your source of inspiration when you joined Miss Earth 2015? My inspiration came from the different beauty queens throughout history and across national boundaries from all the major international beauty pageants. They all project a look of beauty, intelligence and a dignified air which has inspired me to draw the same confidence that they exude. On a lazy day, what would the people see Ms Fire 2015 wearing? As a national representative of inspiration and influence for others, I would show off my toned legs in a pair of white shorts and a fashionable blouse that would flatter my body shape and still look effortlessly chic. What was your favourite fashion trend from two years ago? Two years ago, I was still an undergraduate in NUS I was into wearing a lot of shorts and mini dresses that befitted the varsity look. What is your favourite fashion season and why? It would definitely be summer because I could wear practically any style of clothing and get away with it! What are your plans after your stint with Ms. Earth 2015? I would continue to pursue excellence in my life in general - in my career, in my understanding of the world through travel, my physical build through exercise, attain new skills, continue my spirit of experimentation, my physical appearance, and my intellectual faculties. I hope to be an inspiration for others by living my life to the fullest.

What are the right colours

for my skin tone? Spring

You are warm and clear and your skin is relatively fair. Pale and soft colors complement your skin tone best. Avoid dark and dull colors such as black and white for these colors might be too much of a contrast.

Colors to wear:

Summer

Your skin is of a summery tone; cool, muted and pale. The most flattering colors for your skin tone are pastels and neutrals. Intense and vivid colors like black and orange are not recommended as they may be too harsh.

Colors to wear:

Skin tones are categorized by the seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The season you belong to is determined by the tone and contrast of your skin.

Autumn

Falling under autumn means that you have a warm and muted tone. Your light golden skin is more prone to getting tanned. Rich and muted earth tones such as caramel, beige, dark red and olive are favourable. Contrasting clear and bright colors will make give you a pale appearance.

Colors to wear:

Winter

Winter skin tones are clear and stark. Your skin is extremely pale and solid colors like white, black, gray and deep blue hues are fitting colors. Colors that are washed out like beige, orange and brown should be avoided because these shades make you look faded.

What’s the difference between smart casual and Formal Dressing? Smart casual dressing consists of formal or semi-formal pieces, dressed down with more casual ones. It is an extremely common dress code for work functions, events and parties.

Pairing a collared shirt with a pair of skinny jeans and pumps should be a fail safe choice for this dress code.

?

? ?

Formal dressing is a broad term. It usually ranges from conventional pieces like the “little black dress and gowns to more unconventional ones like androgynous pants suits.

If the event is work or networking related, you might want to dress more professionally to create the right impression. If it is a leisure event, you can let your creativity flow.

Whic outfits best match short hair? Rock that short hair with outfits that flaunt your cropped locks by drawing attention to your face and upper body. In a pixie cut or bob, strapless and open back tops/dresses will always frame your upper body in an appealing manner. Do try working collars and statement necklaces into your outfits to emphasise your short locks.

A life dedicated to inspire and be inspired by women seems to be a pre destined matter for Sebastian Gunawan. Born in a tight knit family with 4 brothers and 2 sisters, his interest in style started early thanks to his elegant mother's natural flair in fashion. This led to a discovery that the young Sebastian Gunawan is gifted in fashion illustration. From mere hobby, this talent was then honed by a degree in fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. The glamorous air of Hollywood seems to be a starting point for his design inspirations, something that was later honed at Milan's famed Instituto Morangoni. JULIEN F O U R N I E Among the 29 exclusive international designer’s brands who are showing in the prestigious official calendar of Haute Couture in Paris, Julien Fournié is the rising star of French fashion. Established since 2009, the couturier’s eponymous house has been showing new collections in the French capital every season since that year and has become a Haute Couture guest member since January 2011. His designs are constantly mixing the incomparable tradition, know how and craftsmanship of Paris Couture together with technological innovations. The couturier’s strong partnership with Dassault Systèmes – a leading French company in the field of 3D design - has resulted for instance in the creation of the FashionLab, a platform of research and development for future tools to be used in the fashion industry. On top of his luxurious collec-

tions catering to the made-to-measure needs of the extremely selected international clientele of Couture, Julien Fournié has also started to propose, siince 2014, more accessible luxury womenswear collections, available for instance at Le Printemps department store, in Paris, as well as collections of footwear and jewellery. The couturier’s designs all enhance femininity to enable women to express their identity in a new manner, more adapted to a contemporary definition of style and elegance. Revealing his designs for the first time in Vietnam on the opening night of Vietnam International Fashion Week comes as a natural new step for the French couturier who had discovered two years ago at Fidé Fashion Weeks in Singapore Vietnamese models like Cha Mi and Thuy who walked for two of the designer’s shows. Another famous Vietnamese model, Kha My Van, debuted on the international scene opening Julien Fournié’s last runway show at Paris Haute Couture in July 2015.
