2018 GOLF TRAVEL PLANNER

As most people know golf, fitness and being active have always been a huge part of my life. I thought to my It was a big decision taking this step of opening a business. I have to thank my girlfriend Kaitlen and my parent askatchewan has some of the finest Indoor Golf facilities in Western Canada. Visit the newest addition to the Saskatchewn Indoor Golf family, 1621 Club, located in Regina, and you’ll instantly see why we make this bold statement. Back in July, 2017, as I was preparing for the ‘17 Canadian Mid Amateur Championship, being played at the Wascana Country Club in Regina, I figured I would take every opportunity to tighten up a few loose areas of my game. One of those loose areas happened to my my glutes! Just like Tiger Woods, back in 2015 when he had to withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open (but on a MUCH smaller scale!), when he was quoted as saying “my glutes aren’t firing”, I was in need of tightening up my back end. Little did I know that paying closer attention to my physical limitations could, and would, play a huge role in my golf game. Looking back, I needed to pay a visit to 1621 club a lot sooner. Like at least 6 or 8 months sooner, or at the very least, at the beginning of the new year. What was originally supposed to be a 1-2 hour assesment to learn more about the physical limitations in my golf swing, turned out to be multiple sessions and a complete analysis of how I can improve my golf game by following a customized fitness program. And thanks in large part to 1621 Club’s Tanner White being able to articulate each and every exercise and relate it to my own personal golf swing (by utilizing his Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Training and Education), I am excited to see the improved results as we continue on with the off-season program. The 2018 golf season can not come soon enough! Tanner White, General Manager of 1621 Club, is an accomplished amateur golfer. Combine a very respectful golf game with an equally respectful educational background, along with a first class fitness facility, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for developing golfers of all ages and abilities. Add into the mix, Trackman, one of the most popular launch monitors in existence today, and it just keeps getting better. And to top it all off, 1621 Club employs PGA of Canada - Saskatchewan Zone Professional Brad Lovatt to offer certified Golf Instruction. All said, 1621 Club is a most welcome addition to the thriving Indoor Golf Facility and Athletic Club scene throughout Saskatchewan. We sat down with Tanner recently, at the extremely welcoming and spacious facility, to discuss 1621 Club and how investing in, and following, a dedicated fitness program can improve your golf game and overall health.

Open Each year you have a Tournament honoree, what do you have planned for the 2018 Scotia Wealth Open?

DP We have always had a tradition of Honoring players or builders of the game each year who have The left us. Bill Taylor, Rob Bulmer and Mark Greenough to name a few. This year will we will be honoring the Humboldt Broncos Hockey Club. Players will be wearing green or yellow golf shirts on day 1 and we will have a moment of silence prior to the first ball being struck. Shawn McNall, president of T.G. Marketing, was kind enough to donate some hats to honor the Humboldt Broncos, and last year’s champion Paul Raycroft donated a couple of Humboldt Broncos jerseys. The host facility, Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin, is always in great shape for your event. For the first-time competitors, what advice can you provide that will help them score well?

DP Well there are key holes I feel. Holes 1, 6, 10 & 14 I find give players a lot of grief if they’re not on

their game. Evergreen Golf Course is an easy course to lose shots early. Be patient, as everyone will not get around unscathed.

Without providing a specific golfer’s name, will the 2018 Scotia Wealth Open Champion be an Amateur or Professional?T

DP We have some great Amateurs and PGA of Canada Professionals playing in this event. It is

always a tossup, but the addition of some past Champions who are PGA of Canada members could be tough. The are some Amateur players who are in the hunt year after year, and are due. What’s your “go to” post round meal (including beverage) while in Nipawin?

DP A frosty Belgium Moon is always nice. Always lean

toward Cajun Chicken Salad or Sandwich.

What’s the state of your game and could the Tournament Chairman ever win?

DP My game is not very good at the moment. I can get

“up n’ down” from a trash container, but I hit it there too much...lol. I ‘m a competitor and always feel that my game of prior years will somehow come out again. I would love to ...Continued on next page

Open province, the Par 5 14th hole, Dave calmly stepped up and ripped driver down the fairway. The hole calls for a slight fade off the tee (for a right handed golfer) to follow the shape of the hole. Hitting driver, Dave not only hit the required fade, he also moved the ball out there at least 300 yards, leaving a long iron into the green. A tidy up and down for birdie, and that pretty much sealed the victory for Dave. Congratulations to Dave for a very well earned victory, and a big thanks to Dean Prosky, Ryan Haight, Devan Mah and Head Professional Derrick Tallon and his staff for the wonderful Nipawin hospitality. Golfers visiting the Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin will want to do a couple of things while in town;

1. 2.

Spend some time in the Pro Shop. Not only is the entire Staff great to talk to, Head Professional Derrick Tallon always has a well stocked Pro Shop and you’ll want to do some shopping. Before heading out of town, golfers should venture down main street and make a stop at the local pizza establishment, Wild Bill’s Pizza, and pick up a pie for the drive back home.

Participating in the 2018 Scotia Wealth Open this year, I overheard a group of highly respected golfers mention that “Evergreen Golf Course should be ranked as one of the Top 3 Golf Courses in Saskatchewan... maybe even all of Western Canada”. No argument there. Well done Nipawin! Clockwise from top left; the Final Pairing on Day 2, Evergreen Pro Shop, PGA of Saskatchewan Head Professional Derrick Tallon, Dave Stewart accepting the trophy from Dean Prosky, Wild Bill’s Pizza.

“What types of Golf Programs are available at Holiday Park Golf Course, Wildwood Golf Course and Silverwood Golf Course this summer?” We try and keep things interesting at the City’s golf courses. We’ve introduced new Twilight times at Holiday Park and Wildwood, including a Drive into Dusk promotion that provides you with a complementary power cart on weekends and holidays after 5 pm. Silverwood offers a Family Golf Special that allows children 14 or younger to golf for free when accompanied by a playing adult. For the first time in 2018 a great deal was introduced, where if you buy a season pass for any of the City’s golf courses, it includes a driving range pass for use at Holiday Park and Silverwood. We also worked to keep our rates consistent for 2018 to ensure our courses remain a great value. “The City of Saskatoon Golf Courses have a long history of offering strong Junior Golf Programs. How should families go about choosing the right City of Saskatoon Golf Course Junior Program for the young golfers?” Each City of Saskatoon golf course offers the leadership and expertise of certified PGA of Canada Professionals, offering quality instruction for all ages. We also continue to offer our popular Junior and Junior Junior Season passes and Club6 Packs which give parents and kids a number of options to get out and golf. “Saskatoon has a lot to offer outside of quality golf courses. What would you (Andrew & Susan) recommend families do or see after their round of golf?” Come for the golf, stay for the many other great attractions and events Saskatoon has to offer! For families, options like Nutrien Playland and the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo offer great entertainment for all ages. Saskatoon is also renowned for its burgeoning food scene and there are many great restaurants, pubs and food trucks to check out. Tourism Saskatoon has a great up-to-date event listing on their website at tourismsaskatoon.com/events that lists all of the unique things going on in Saskatoon any day of the week. “Last question, what’s your favorite golf hole at each of the 3 City of Saskatoon Golf Courses?” This is a hard question to answer! We tried to design the courses so all the holes are good with unique characteristics. However if we had to choose, at Holiday Park it would be the new #3 on the Executive Nine, as it has been newly renovated with a new green and a beautiful water feature. At Silverwood any of the holes on the River Nine (back nine) have majestic views of the river valley that make it an unforgettable experience. For those looking for a memorable challenge, Wildwood’s #16 offers a good par 5 with a tough green. “Thanks for the great interview Susan and Andrew...have a wonderful summer!”

If your ball does the same bad thing all of the time and you are tired of it, let’s do something about it - now - so you can enjoy the golf season. Tops, chunks, slices, chili-dips, three-putts, flubs, fats, thins, toe-jobs, whiffs, three-from-the-tees, look-outs, fores, heels, shanks, bananas, duck-hooks, craps, f’s - all of these and more can be assessed, explained, and corrected. Understanding what’s causing the problem and how to fix it, will allow you to say good-bye to that slice, or whatever the issue may be, for good! Sh o rt G a m e Im p ro ve m e n t At the beginning of the season, you could improve your score most significantly by focusing on putting, chipping, wedges and the dreaded bunker shots early and often. It may be the most neglected part of anyone’s game, but may be the one of the most important to score your best.

It will take time and a regular pattern of coaching and practice, but this is where golfers I work with regularly see the most improvement and increased enjoyment in golf. This is a worthwhile consideration if you are striving for consistency and ready for regular coaching and practice throughout the season.

4

F o cu se d P ra ctice Tim e For many players, they don’t know how to spend time effectively on the range or on the practice green when they have a little time. It is important to understand what you’re working on and to have a set of regular drills or practice sets planned for this time. Understanding what you’re doing and why you’re doing it will make your practice time more effective and your improvement more significant.

O n - C o u rse P la y in g Se ssio n s These can be very productive as we combine actual game play with discussion about game-situations and off-course instruction. Observing a professional player can be helpful, as well, in reinforcing the motions and concepts we discuss and practice on the range or at the Golf Dome. Many golfers find this type of session very instructive, but it’s not right for every golfer. Together we can decide whether this is the right time or approach for you.

The bottom line is that all golfers have more fun playing golf when they are playing better. Wascana Country Club Successfully Hosts Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship By Scott Allan / SaskGolfer

W ith the 2018 CP Women’s Open being hosted by the Wascana Country Club in Regina, the playing

of the 2017 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur was no doubt a “trial run” by not only Golf Canada, but the Wascana CC and entire city of Regina. Based on the positive comments and social media buzz following the event, and judging by what I personally was privileged enough to witness “inside the ropes”, the Wascana CC will undoubtedly prove to be a formidable and very worthy host to the best female golfers in the world in August. The 2017 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, hosted by the Wascana Country Club and the city of Regina, was an overwhelming success. I’m not 100% sure what grade the past CP Women’s Open host cities have received when it comes to friendliness of host golf course staff, but I’ll tell you right now that the hospitable Wascana Country Club staff and local volunteers will receive an A+ following the 2018 CP Women’s Open. continued on next page...

SaskGolfer Travel Planner Wascana Country Club Successfully Hosts 2017 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship

N ot only were the host Wascana CC staff and volunteers extremely friendly, but the golf course

conditions themselves were equally hospitable. Rumor has it that one of the highest ranked amateurs in Canada, and one of the players in the Canadian Mid-Am, is said to have commented that the Wascana CC course conditions (specifically the immaculate greens) were some of the best he’s played on all summer. When Canada’s top amateur competitors offer such positive feedback, considering they are playing most of their golf at high-end facilities in Ontario and British Columbia, it does nothing but strengthen the fact that the province of Saskatchewan is quite worthy of hosting any level Golf Championship, including the LPGA Tour. Throughout the four tournament days of the Mid-Am Championship, not only did I regularly see the management team from the Wascana CC outside supporting all competitors, but I’m pretty sure I caught a glimpse of Wascana CC CEO Greg Dukart caddying on day 2 for one of the local competitors. It’s always nice seeing the host golf course staff actively participating in the event. The buzz on the driving range before the first tee shots were struck was that the players better be prepared to go low, with some saying that a 4 day total score of 20 under par would be the winning number. By the end of the week, 3 players were tied at 10 under par. Firm, fair greens, combined with narrow fairways and the always present prairie winds made for a great test of golf. Todd Fanning of Winnipeg captured the overall title, prevailing in a playoff over Steven Diack of Coquitlam, B.C. and 2 time defending champion Garrett Rank from Elmira, Ontario. There was another playoff required to determine the Inter-Provincial Team Champions. Lead by Brad Phelps’ 3 under par 69 on day 1, Saskatchewan trailed Ontario by just one stroke after the opening day. Team Saskatchewan caught Ontario on the second day and forced a playoff, which was won by the men from Ontario. A huge accomplishment for the host Saskatchewan team of Brad Phelps, Tyler Wright and Jim Born. One of the most impressive highlights from the week, in my opinion, is the fact that a total of 15 golfers from Saskatchewan made the 73 player cut after 2 days. Leading the way, flying the flag for all of Saskatchewan was Wascana CC member, and 2017 Saskatchewan Men’s Amateur Champion, Tyler Wright. Tyler continued his strong season by firing rounds of 72, 68, 74 and 68 to finish in a tie for 5th place overall. In the Mid-Master Division (aged 40+), Saskatchewan was once again successful with 2 golfers finishing in the top 15, including Brad Phelps and Ryan McNall who both finished tied for 13th. Speaking to other participants, volunteers and rules officials following the 2017 Mid-Amateur Championship, there’s no doubt at all that the hospitable Wascana Country Club staff, and the entire city of Regina, will prove to be the perfect hosts for the 2018 CP Women’s Open.
