Activity: IN DETAIL Week 8

These two weeks we looked at various details and methods used in order to prevent water and heat transfer. Based on our own case study buildings, had to find details we our drawings that in displays an importance in A1 drawing is The attached at the back of the journal.

This detail drawing is part of Queens College.

Precast concrete panels are used in this section of Queens College. There are many positives when using precast concrete: (Humes, 2011) -‐ Its high strengths as it provides long life cycles, high loading capacities and long spans -‐ Its durability and low maintenance -‐ Faster construction time because it wont be held up with manufacturing delays -‐ Lower costs because lower site labour and material storage costs -‐ Better site management because site is less clustered -‐ Reliable production, no weather delays -‐ Reduced waste because there is no manufacturing wastage on site -‐ Provides effective acoustic barrier -‐ Has reduced environmental impact because manufacturing is in a controlled factory environment, which means les noise, air pollution and debris on site

This section uses a glass bi-‐fold door which has both pros and cons (Doityouself, 2013):

Pros: -‐ it can enhance the atmosphere of the room -‐ it is used for mainly aesthetic purposes -‐ it helps increase the space that you perceive in the room Cons: -‐ it is energy inefficient -‐ contributes to increased air conditioning or heating costs

Caulks and sealants is a form of flashing, making it waterproof. It is possible that it may have been used here. The difference between caulk and sealants are their elasticity where caulks are more rigid and dry, whereas sealants are flexible and prone to expansion and contraction (Merritt, 2013). Pros and cons of caulk: -‐ can be cleaned up by water -‐ is susceptible to cracking when experiences temperature swings -‐ limited elasticity Pros and cons to sealants: -‐ keeps watertight seal even with temperature swings -‐ not pintable -‐ gives off powerful fumes when first applied

There is a slope here which may help the leakage of water moving it away from the building if it ever encounters a leakage in this area.

[image online] Available at: http://www.stormtech.com.au/products/arg-‐series/38arg-‐ linear-‐drainage-‐system [Accessed: 6 Oct 2013]. This product is called the 38ARG Linear Drainage System (Stormtech, 2013): -‐ It can remove water along its length from on or more outlets and improves the efficiency of the drain. -‐ It can remove large quantities of water -‐ Areas with a slope removes the need for steps and frames which reduces trip hazards -‐

This prduct provides a prestige finish with design flexibility

Feature wedge wire and stainless steel grate

This is a PVC drainage pipe. Waterproofing membranes may be fixed down into the pipe where they prevent humidity from gaining access to the structure (Walki, 2013).

PERPEND

A vertical layer of mortar between two bricks.

Perpends are found in brickwork where the bricks are joined together using mortar, which is a mixture of lime and cement to bond bricks.
