In our tenth year, Music for Change is taking the opportunity to share and celebrate our achievements. The organisation was set up with the extraordinary vision of Tom Andrews from a tiny loft space in the centre of Canterbury. Much of our continued success is due directly to that vision and hard work. We now deliver over 2000 workshops and events a year and work with up to 200 artists. At this important time in our history we are looking forward to future development. With a new Chief Executive and a new sense of vision and direction, we hope that the next ten years and beyond will be equally successful. We look forward to sharing the future with you all. Notes from Underground in Kings Wood 2007
Music for Change celebrates its 10th anniversary Music for Change was founded in 1997 as an educational charity to promote awareness, understanding and respect for cultural diversity through music and the performing arts. Over the last ten years Music for Change has built a unique and innovative practice through creative thinking and action; with artists, educators and development specialists as our partners. We continue to believe not only in the intrinsic value of music and the arts, but how these can play a vital role in breaking down barriers between people and cultures. Our role is to encourage people to celebrate cultural commonality and diversity whilst challenging preconceptions and prejudice. We work with skilled and experienced artists from around the world to deliver dynamic and exciting events, workshops, projects, residencies and creative cultural encounters. Our artists work in schools, community centres, festivals, venues, colleges, detention centres, churches……. in fact just about anywhere!
In its ten years, Music for Change has touched the lives of over 670,000 people – children, young people and adults alike.

The work we do
Our Mission & Approach
Music for Change is an organisation based on the passionate belief that we can foster beneficial change through our work. We strive to educate through engagement, creativity and cultural encounters whilst promoting inclusion, celebrating diversity and fostering intercultural understanding through positive action.
Our Education & Community Work
We place artists in educational and community environments through workshops, residencies and performances, engaging with people of all ages. The Music for Change family of artists represent a wide range of cultures and art forms. We work in partnership to deliver our goals. Our aims are simple - to engage, celebrate, educate, inform, challenge and enhance lives through fun and participative experiences.
Our Projects & Live Events
We devise, produce and deliver bespoke projects which are issue based and targeted using the arts as a development vehicle. To date we have worked on issues including racism, immigration, social exclusion, environment, healthy living, literacy, gun crime and … the list is endless. We produce celebratory events such as festivals and artists’ showcases, as well as events for partners and clients, and we co produce tours by international artists. We also provide training and development for artists.
Training & Artist Development
Our future success is dependant on the quality of artists and our support and commitment to their development is vital. We undertake constant training and Continual Professional Development activities for our artists and provide opportunities for new artists to train with us.

The Music for Change Artists Music for Change has a close family of a dozen or so artists, and an extended family of over 150 artists. The artists who work with Music for Change are the lifeblood of the organisation. Without their skills and inspiration we would achieve very little. Their commitment, energy and focus is exceptional and a constant factor in our development and growth.
Where from?
The Music for Change artists originate from many countries including Senegal, Zimbabwe, India, China, Ghana, Jamaica and the Caribbean, South Africa, Britain, Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sierra Leone…… this will soon include Israel, Ireland, Eastern Europe, Brazil and beyond.
Which Artforms?
West African (djembe) drumming and Afro Cuban percussion, Indian Kathak dance, Chinese classical and folk dance, Southern African gum boot dancing, West African dance, movement, storytelling, A Capella, singing, Township Choirs, song writing, acrobatics and circus skills.
The Issues and Topics
Our work is often issue based or has specific aims, including cross cultural awareness, respect, community cohesion, human rights, children’s rights, violence and gun crime, immigration, citizenship, millennium development goals, the environment, interdependence, arts in education, artist development, creative economy, self expression, arts based training, special needs and special education, audience development, teambuilding and management training.

The Team
Music for Change has a team of committed, passionate, skilled and hard working people who keep the wheels in motion. Our success is largely attributable to their sheer hard work and dedication. We have a permanent team of ten full and part time staff, and a loyal board of trustees who maintain the direction of the organisation. Music for Change has also benefited enormously from many volunteers and interns over the last ten years.
The Future
We wish to expand and broaden our work. We aim to increase our knowledge, understanding and expertise, and to enhance our position as a specialist organisation in the arts, cultural and education sectors. We aim to extend the geographical impact of our work across the UK and internationally, and to expand and support the skill base and number of artists who work with us.
