A NOTE FROM POLLY
Dear Supporters and Friends of Dan’s Fund
This year has all been about spending money.
We had the most marvellous 20th Anniversary celebrations last year with over £105,000 raised at the Hurlingham Club on October 7th 2023.
Joined on the night by my on screen actress in the TV series Bali 2002, Claudia Jessie, we were surrounded by those who have supported the charity from the very start, through to those new to the fund.
HurlinghamPollywithJen(DFFBTrustee) Club20thAnniversary
Back in 2022, we received a most generous legacy from the late Estelle Josset’s estate, a friend of Dan’s mother and we had reached out to the Burn Services across the UK asking for them to come with proposals to help us spend this and other money we had raised.
With a lot of hard work from Jennifer, myself and the Trustees we have managed to bring some of these projects to fruition, alongside the day to day running of the charity.
Thanks must go to you though, of course, our wonderful sponsors, donors and friends, for without your support none of this would be possible.
Since our last newsletter, we have continued to fundraise through our annual runners in the Royal Parks Half Marathon, our dnata Bali Legends Emirates Airline Dubai Ruby 7s International Vets Campaign, through our Spring and Autumn Ladies Golf events at Sunningdale Heath Golf Club and Tyrrells Wood Golf Club. This year we also held the Bi-Annual Charity Golf Day at Woking Golf Club in June.
With golf being a major fundraising source for us, we were delighted to be taken on by John Seale as his Captain’s Charity of the Year at Lamberhurst Golf Club in Kent. I was delighted to take a team to his Captain’s Day and we were thrilled to come fifth out of a field of 25!
The day was a roaring success with over £7,000 raised and the lunch, speeches and auction went without a hitch.
All these events help to underpin our efforts to support burn survivors on their recovery back to a healthy and happy life. A burn is a lifelong journey and support both emotionally, physically and financially is needed.
We continue to offer and donate regular crisis grants to families and burn survivors in need and this is one of the most rewarding of our funding activities.

Our weekly online chat continues to offer regular support and guidance to burn survivors and we thank our volunteer moderators for giving up their time to help keep this service running. A massive thanks to Jennifer Fitt for dedicating her Wednesday evenings to play her role as charity representative on these support chats. Our Befriender Peer Support Service has continued to see a steady flow of matches with some more successful than others.
As part of our Peer Support Service, we decided to host our thirdBurn Survivor Weekend in Newcastle, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. This weekend saw over 45 of us get together to enjoy a weekend of activities, including swimming, Pilates, burn related talks, amongst others.
Whilst getting ready for the weekend, I was busy packaging up 16 boxes of Burns Simulation Training Kits to be sent across the UK to help Burn Centres and Units train their medical staff in burn care. We also sponsored NHS professionals to attend a Seminars and Workshops in Burn Care event and sent NHS staff on the Kryolan Skin Camouflage course in Covent Garden in London.
Our biggest project to date, is the donation of eight LPG vacuum massage machines to Burn Centres across the country at a cost of over £265,000. These machines use negative pressure to help relieve pain and itching from deep scar banding and can be used on any part of the body with different sized heads. With the help of RuthAnn Fanstone, from KPF, Esther Simon, LPG UK, Coleen Keough, St James’s
Hospital and Alexa Szladowska from Chelsea and Westminster hospital, we held a training day for all the centres in Birmingham in July for all the Burn Centres.
We now understand all eight of the machines are operational allowing any burn survivor across the UK to access treatment on the NHS.
This is an achievement we are very proud to have been a part of.
It has been the busiest couple of years with the charity growing, so please accept our apologies that it has taken us a while longer to get this newsletter finished this year.
I also decided that it was time I learnt how to publish the newsletter myself, which has taken a bit more work this year but good news for the long run. Thanks to Tom at a Studio of Our Own for helping me with this!
Despite this we have got it out in time to still be able to wish you all a wonderful end of the year and all the best for the festive season ahead. We thank you once again for all your support, donations, friendship, advice and kindness. Without these, we would not be able to run and maintain our valuable services, support the NHS services and our burn survivors.
Warmest wishes,
Polly

DFFB’s Newcastle Adult Burn Survivor Weekend
Following feedback from last year’s Burn Survivor Weekend away in Surrey, we decided to hold our 2024 weekend in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to give more access to those burn survivors living in the North and Scotland. Requests were also made for a swimming pool. We listened and booked the Crowne Plaza, Stephenson Quarter, Newcastle for 13-15th September 2024
Whilst the logistics of organising the weekend as far away as Newcastle were more tricky than before, we were delighted to get plenty of help from the Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary staff and the hotel itself.
For many, this was their first chance to meet other people with injuries and experiences similar to theirs and there were some that were nervous about the weekend ahead.
To ease their worries about meeting everyone and wanting to help them relax into the weekend as quickly as possible, we booked Quiz Coconuts again. They are great at setting a fun and relaxing atmosphere for the weekend ahead. Those returning burn survivors were brilliant at welcoming the new survivors that night, including Joanne,
“I said to Emma on Friday, that the burns weekend was best thing I've ever done in my life and that it's helped changed my mind on the future as I've always been so negative about myself and thought I'm not good enough anymore.”
Joanne, Burn Survivor
and everyone went to bed with smiles on their faces.
The next day we were lucky to kick off the day with Pilates from Nerea before breakfast.
Following talks from Belinda, Chris and Louise from the RVI Hospital on skin camouflage techniques, surgical procedures and LPG, tours of Newcastle were available working around individual scar therapy massages for each burn survivor. These were given by seven volunteer Restore Scar therapists, sponsored by Espere Healthcare Ltd and The Scar Wand.
A dinner and disco followed and the dance floor was packed all night.
The weekend was life affirming, filled with positivity and love for one another. Friendships made and a few tears as it is always a very emotional weekend!
A massive thanks to all those who helped us to organise and run the Burn Survivor Weekend including the Restore Scar therapists led by Laura Hathaway from The Scar Wand and especially to the team of professionals who volunteered their time including Zoe & Emma H, clinical psychologists, Chris, Consultant Burn Surgeon, Louise, a burns therapist and finally Belinda and Emma B, two burns nurses. Emma wrote us this lovely email after the weekend…..
“I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to help out at the recent Dan’s Fund Burn Survivor weekend held in Newcastle in September 2024.
I volunteered to help support Polly and Jennifer along with my colleague Zoe, Clinical Psychologist, to help the weekend run as smoothly as possible, but it ended up being so much more than that.
I was honoured to be part of the weekend and to meet so many amazing people and hear their stories of not only tragedy, but also survival and the ways they support others.
It was a great opportunity for our Newcastle Burns Team to get involved with Dan’s Fund For Burns. There were presentations from our Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) includingBurns Reconstruction, Laser, Skin Camouflage, LPG machines and providing Psychological support. We are currently setting up a LPG service in Newcastle after being donated the machine from Dan’s Fund - this is something we are very excited about and are keen to get up and running.
One thing I am grateful for this weekend is being able to hear the other side of the story - the patients’ experience
in their own words. I feel I have gained a lot from the weekend and will carry this on into my role as a Burns Specialist Nurse.
Well done to Polly, Jennifer and all the wonderful people I met - you truly are amazing!”

A private Cinema Outing
Dan’s Fund was approached in February 2024 by the team at Pinderfields Hospital to request some help to give a 17 year old patient, who had been an in-patient since August 2022, a chance to have a cinema outing with his family to celebrate his 18th birthday.
Harley’s recovery has been ongoing and the outing meant hiring out a cinema and arranging transportation which DFFB was able to help fund. Following the outing, Claire Swales, Ward manager, Adult Burn Centre, wrote the following:
"It has been a much bigger deal than a cinema trip too, today a young man who hasn't been out of the hospital since sustaining a massive injury nearly 18 months ago left, even just briefly, and got to experience something normal with his family.
It has been such a fantastic motivating activity that the same young man who six weeks ago hadn't been out of bed in months has worked hard to be ready for it, he got dressed, spent time around the hospital, and practised sitting in his chair, so he could last the trip.
The idea of getting home has probably become so abstract and far away that it hasn't motivated him for some time, but this did as it was achievable, with everyone's help, and we are just back from a very successful trip ".
Once again, thank you so much to Dan’s Fund For Burns for helping to fund Harley's cinema trip.
He had an absolutely wonderful time which was summed up by one of our consultants, Ciara Bowers, who sent an email yesterday to the management team in the trust stating,
His mum also has asked me to pass on her thanks to Dan’s Fund for helping to make this happen.

Good morning, Polly and Jennifer,
Thank you so much for your support and the donation we received, it came in extremely helpful in our visit to John last weekend.
For us to spend time together as a family for more than a few hours was exactly what we needed. The improvement in John has been incredible and the doctors have all been in shock in the turnaround he has made, so much so that on Friday last week John actually came home!! Wow.
Having him home is amazing and we are all supporting his recovery.
Really appreciate everything you have done for us the advice, support and money.
We hope to contribute to your wonderful charity next year when we are back on our feet.
Many thanks.

BURN SURVIVOR GIVES BACK
DFFB helps
Ellie has suffered with mental health issues for many years and has a history of self-harm. She reached out to Dan’s Fund on our online chat.
I have had complex mental health problems for two decades. In 2015, whilst very unwell on a psychiatric ward, I set myself on fire. I suffered from full-thickness burns on my torso and leg and other parts of my body.
Although I received the physical burns care that I needed at the time, I didn’t receive any psychological support and over the following few years I became very disabled by the debilitating PTSD caused by the incident.
I spent eight years not feeling that it was appropriate to seek support for the psychological aspect of my burn injuries because they were self-inflicted and my mental health team were unwilling to provide therapy due to my instability and risk concerns.
In 2023, another adverse time in my life led to a second burn injury, this time to my face, also full-thickness and requiring hospital admission, surgery and on-going treatment. But this time things were very different.
Luckily, I had the proper support around me, from the mental health team, a trauma therapy charity, the burns unit and my friends and family. I was able to process why this happened. From the second day in hospital the nurses encouraged me to go out into the hospital not to hide away and be ashamed of my face, as well as signposting me to a couple of charities that might help. One of these was Dan’s Fund For Burns.
Several months later, I finally plucked up the courage to join one of the weekly online chats. I kept the reasons for my burns to myself but I was amazed to see how open people were - talking about scarring, burn injuries, burn care and supporting each other - something that is taboo in the mental health world.
I found myself in the position of having the opportunity to attend the adult burn survivor weekend in September 2023. I was incredibly nervous. I was terrified that when
everyone “found me out” as someone who had done this to herself - when other people didn’t have a choice - that I would be chucked out straight away.
But that was not the case. Instead, I found myself surrounded by the most inspiring, beautiful group of survivors. People talked about burns and wore their scars proudly - it was normal to have scars and that felt so freeing. Hearing stories of other people moving on from horrific adversity gave me the strength to understand that maybe I could move forwards too. Now I was part of a community.
So when I made the (slightly mad) decision to take part in a sprint triathlon in July 2024, it wasn’t a difficult choice to decide to do it to raise funds for DFFB.
Doing the triathlon has been a big motivation for me in my mental health recovery for a number of reasons, but also the motivation to be able to raise money to give back to a charity that has literally changed my life was a massive factor in holding me to account!
On Sunday 21st July 2024, just under two years since I was in hospital going into cardiac arrest, I completed the Hathersage Hilly Sprint Triathlon (the strapline is “its not flat - and they weren’t joking!”) in 1 hour and 57 minutes.
An even bigger surprise was that the race director knew Polly personally!
It was a great experience raising money for a charity that means so much to me personally, and is a community that I am a part of - I felt supported by the charity and other burn survivors and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend giving doing a fundraising event for DFFB a go! Its something you can definitely be proud of!

Staying cool
Helping Tara, a burn survivor and NHS Occupational Therapist survive the heat with damaged skin…
I am so incredibly grateful to Dan's Fund For Burns and all those who donate/fundraise for the charity, for the support I received this year in purchasing a portable air conditioning unit for my home.
With approximately 40% burns from hot water across my body, there is significant impact on my body's ability to regulate its' temperature. In hot weather (here in London it got to 39°c this year!) it feels like my body shuts down, having a massive detrimental effect on my daily functioning.
As an NHS OT, this air con unit has enabled me to continue my job, working from home on very hot days, but also helping me to avoid getting heatstroke/heat exhaustion this year!
As a person with burn scarring, this has allowed me to continue living my life, having a cool place to live during the heat. I am so incredibly grateful to the charity and its' supporters, as this is not something I would have been able to afford without their support.
Dan's Fund is absolutely incredible and so are all those who support them!

Mobile living
My name is Rob and I was involved in a gas explosion in February 2023 and received 40% third degree burns. At the time, I was living on a traveller site next to a dual carriageway. The fire was so intense that the road was closed.
My car, my caravan and everything else I owned was lost including several rare and valuable guitars. I checked myself out of Hospital a few weeks after my injury and I continued my recovery at my mum's house in Norwich. When I was finally able to go back to work in August 2023, my round-trip commute from my mother's house to work, was 100 miles which meant spending up to four hours driving daily.
I remembered Vicky, the OT at the hospital told me about Dan's Fund For Burns and how they help burn survivors, so I had a chat with Jennifer.
After a few conversations, we decided the best way to help me would to allow me to have my own place and reduce the commute I faced living in Norwich and working in Suffolk. I was able to find a second-hand caravan to suit my needs and several weeks later I had a wonderful caravan parked up outside my work in Suffolk.
The donation from Dan's Fund allowed me to re-establish myself and as I spend my summer running stages at different music events, all I have to do is hitch it up for my road trips. The charity helped me get my life back on track.
Thanks Dan's Fund.

Sue’s Poem
If you are in need of some inspiration, please enjoy Sue Banda’s incredible poem below.
She is one of our volunteer burn survivor moderators who gives her time to help other burn survivors on our online live chat. This photo is taken at the Fundraising Ball where Sue helped out on the evening.
She speaks from her heart and it resonates for all those who have been affected by burn injuries..

“I
was burnt in a fire some years ago.
At first it was a real struggle to face the world and have some get up and go.
Most people that I meet are kind, they can see through the scars and find.
The same old me, just the same as I always used to be.
Now and again I would come across the odd one who would make me cross.
Some would stop, stare, laugh and point at me!
I would think why can’t they see, I’m just the same as I always used to be!
Now I find I don’t care let them stop, look and stare.
The world is changing everyday.
Let’s hope peoples attitude changes the same way.
I know it won’t change overnight BUT with your help it just might.
When you see someone like me - be as thoughtful as you can be.
Remember to look through the scars and see the person beneath - after all ain’t we all the same underneath? “

DFFB Sponsors 10 Places for Burn Care eventLiverpool
Dan’s Fund For Burns was pleased to be able to support the inaugural Seminars and Workshops in Burn Care event in Liverpool for Allied Health Professionals in September.
We sponsored ten NHS burn professionals from across the country including Newcastle, Pinderfields, Chelmsford, Swansea and Belfast, to attend and they found the talks and workshops, interesting, informative and one even commented it was excellent!
Congratulations to the organiser, Prof Kayvan Shokrollahi, Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Relaunch of the Mersey Burns App
In January this year, Jennifer attended the re-launch event of the newly improved Mersey BurnsApp in Liverpool.
TheApp enables burns professionals to do a quick, accurate assessment of the extent of a burn on a patient by shading a diagram on the screen and entering the patient’s age, weight and time of injury.
The app then calculates the fluid resuscitation protocol with the push of a button, greatly reducing the amount of time needed to get this information.
DFFB is proud to be one of the sponsors of the Mersey BurnsApp which is downloadable for iOS andAndroid devices and now has over 8,000 users.
Congratulations to Prof Rowan Pritchard Jones FRCS (Plast), who created theApp and Dr Michael Watts who helped with the redevelopment and re-launch of theApp.
LPG machines for burns rehabilitation
Dan’s Fund For Burns has made its largest donation ever - donating LPG® Endermologie® machines to eight NHS Burn Centres across the UK!
LPG Endermologie was developed in France and works as a vacuum massage to stimulate deep skin tissue in burn survivors. This treatment helps to alleviate pain, restore mobility and improve restricted movement caused by scarring.
Polly trialled the treatment at Chelsea & Westminster before committing to our largest donation to date.
Dan’s Fund are pleased to have been able to make this burns aftercare treatment more accessible to adult burn survivors across the UK through NHS burn centres.
Prior to the donation, only Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London and St James’s Hospital, Dublin, had LPG systems and offered this treatment for burn scar rehabilitation.
On July 24, 2024, a training day was organised that saw members of the burns therapy teams across all eight burn centres meet at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. Presentations and training were delivered by RuthAnn Fanstone (KPF), Esther Simon (LPG UK), Coleen Keough (St James’s Hospital) and Alexa Szladowska (Chelsea and Westminster Hospital). A big thank you for sharing their experiences and skills, and thanks to Rachel Kettle for hosting the day in Birmingham.
Here, Alexa shares her thoughts on using the LPG endermologie system as part of burns rehabilitation.
“We have used the vacuum massage machine from LPG
for seven years at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital as one of the treatments we offer our patients who have sustained burn injuries. We have found the treatment to be incredibly beneficial and well liked by our patients. It has helped our burns survivors overcome highly irritable itch, improved the stretch in their skin leading to better function and improved some of the other uncomfortable feeling scars cause, to highlight just a few benefits!
We have seen it really improve quality of life for some patients, which has been wonderful.
The vacuum massage is also something our patients really enjoy, which can be a welcome relief given some of the treatments they may have had before, and it’s really lovely for us as therapists to be able to offer it.
We are all enormously grateful to Dan’s Fund For Burns for providing us with a new machine, it will enable us to expand our current service offering and deliver the treatment to more burns patients.” Alexa, physiotherapist

Bristol Therapy room makeover
HELPING THE NHS
Southmead thanks DFFB
I have been working as an occupational therapist at Southmead in Bristol for over 30 years. I have seen many changes when working in burns but one of the most positive changes was the support that our patients started to receive when Dan’s Fund arrived on the scene.
The NHS is amazing but has its limitations in being able to provide for the variety of needs a burn survivor requires to fully recover from the trauma of their injury. I am lucky that I get to work with patients from day one to all the way through to their discharge. Their discharge is often many years later, so I get to see the real impact the additional support from the charity sector has at different stages to the patients recovery.
I have reached out to Dan’s Fund on behalf of my patients with multiple requests and over the years my patients have gratefully received donations and a variety of items to help with transport costs, rehabilitation and refurbishing their homes.
A few years ago, we were lucky to receive a Lymphatouch to provide additional scar massage which we have used successfully with many of our patients.
2024 has been a bumper year for us as Dan’s Fund has also purchased an LPG machine for us, and has given us funding to get our therapy room refurbished.
The LPG is something I have wanted for many years, and I knew we were unlikely to get the funding through the NHS (I thought I might have to organise never ending bake sales to raise the funds)!
Inspired by positive reports from this treatment, our OT team is excited to be able to offer this in house and I am pleased to report we started our first treatments in September this year.
Alison and Denise starting the clear out
Our burns therapy inpatient rehab space is currently just a very cluttered room with a plinth and various items squeezed into the space and is not the best environment to inspire our patients when having their rehabilitation.
Unfortunately, within our trust spending the money to improve it is low on the list of priorities. So, after lots of exploration around different options and some back and forward with Dan’s Fund, we were so happy to hear that the Trustees had agreed to finance the work needed.
The work is set to start on the 30th of September, watch out on their socials for the photos of the revamped space!
So, I want to say a big thank you to Dan’s Fund, and their supporters for continuing to support burns survivors and the staff who work with them.

In December 2023, Dan’s Fund donated £3,000 to burn centres and units across the UK and encouraged them to spend it on Xmas treats / parties for the burns staff who work hard throughout the year supporting burns patients.
Those who took us up on the offer, were grateful for the show of appreciation and all thanked DFFB for the generous gift.
Here are some of the lovely words we received:
“My staff really deserve this after an incredibly difficult year”
“This will go a long way in making the team feel valued and appreciated”
“the whole MDT can attend the party and we've spent the £250 on an absolute feast”

Big Jeff Johns Art Exhibition Dan’s Fund donates NHS Xmas Party treats
Jeff Johns, known locally as ‘Big Jeff’, is an artist based in Bristol, who loves listening to live bands and can often be seen at music gigs around town most nights.
Jeff sustained a burn injury in 2022 and in May 2023 he was able to access the Dan’s Fund Befriender Peer Support Service where he was matched with one of our trained burn survivor befrienders and received one-toone burns peer support.
Jeff found it very helpful to be able to talk to another burn survivor who understood what he was going through and
could give him support and guidance from his own lived experience of burns.
In December 2023, Jeff’s art exhibition ‘STARE – a collection of self-portraits’ was part of the reopening of the iconic venue, The Bristol Beacon.
At the exhibition, Jeff and his team chose to raise awareness of our charity and highlighted the great work DFFB do supporting burn survivors.
Some prints of Jeff done by a local stencil artist Stewy (@stweystencils) were sold and profits from the sale were donated to DFFB.
We are grateful to Big Jeff Johns Art and team for supporting our charity during this exhibition.
Jeff’s art can be found at bigjeffjohnsart.com.
Positivity during burns recovery
One of DFFB’s trained volunteer befrienders, Vicky, shared some poems with us this year that she wrote at various stages of her recovery as she reflected on her journey.
Vicky found writing about her feelings very therapeutic and helpful with her recovery. In 2013, Vicky sustained 40% burns to her arms, torso and back, losing all but one of her fingers.
Her recovery was long and took a lot of patience and positivity to get through both physically and mentally. Doctors, nurses and physios kept saying ‘all of a sudden, you will turn a corner’.
One of her passions is horse riding and finally, in her words,
“out of the blue 13 months after my burns, I found a corner and I turned it - I was back horse riding”
Many burn survivors experience similar moments in their recovery where something changes and makes them feel they've turned a corner and they can get through this and live life fully again. Recovery from burns requires a lot of support from the burns team, family and friends.
Following her burn injury, Vicky retrained and is now a qualified freelance counsellor, also working part time at John Lewis to give herself a healthy work balance. Having felt supported during her recovery and knowing what a positive impact it had on her, she has volunteered
at Wythenshawe hospital offering peer support to burns patients and is one of DFFB’s volunteer befriender peer supporters. Below, we share one of Vicky’s poems from 2015, two years after her injury.

As I lay there, Drugged up and in pain I had to stay positive
Even though there was excruciating pain
Burns on 40% of me
I remember the paramedic did say I had to stay positive
And get through this phase
Operation after Operation
They never seem to end I had to stay positive
Continue to fight on again and again
The loss of my thumbs and fingers Can never ever be changed I have to stay positive
And find a new way
My body will never be the same Covered in my scars that won’t go away I have to stay positive And look to the future
I am still in recovery
Scars take years to repair I have to stay positive
My scars are now part of me
I am getting used to being stared at It happens every single day I have to stay positivie
And that is how I will stay
Adult Peer Support Options from Dan’s Fund For Burns
The DFFB Adult Befriender Peer
Support Service
We continue to offer our one-to-one online befriender peer support service to any adult burn survivor in the UK who may be struggling at any point in their recovery. This year we made a few more matches and have a couple more in the process of being matched. Being able to speak one-toone with another burn survivor who has ‘been there’, ‘gets it’ and understands what it’s like to live with a burn injury, can make a huge difference to the psychological recovery of a burn survivor.
Our befrienders, like Vicky and Shell, are all volunteer burn survivors who have attended the DFFB Befriender training workshop developed in collaboration with the Psychological Therapies team at Broomfield Hospital. We are planning another befriender training workshop in 2025 to add more befrienders to our database. The training ensures befrienders are equipped to offer support and guidance through their own lived experience of a burn injury. If you’re a burn survivor or you know a burn survivor that would benefit from speaking to a DFFB befriender, please get in touch by email to info@dansfundforburns.org or by phone 07526 847699 or visit the Get Help section of our website, dansfundforburns.org to fill out an enquiry form.
Adult Burn Support UK (ABSUK) weekly online burn support live chat
Our weekly online burn support live chat, every Wednesday evening, 7.30-9.00pm, is available to burn survivors (16yrs and older) or any adult affected by burns.
It provides a safe and private space to come online to connect, share experiences, ask questions and mutually
moderators,DFFBburnsurvivorEmily,Sue,Louise,Lynn&Shell
support each other in real time. Our moderators are all trained burn survivors so that every week there is a burn survivor and a charity representative who facilitate the live chat.
It is a very supportive community and inspiring to see everyone sharing so openly and helping each other. We have people who join regularly and some joining for the first time. Here are some comments from first time participants this year:
“This is so refreshing to be able to be this open and honest it’s amazing”
“I found a lot of help, probably more than I was expecting too. Thank you”
“It was my first time last week and I went away feeling so glad I came”
This feedback is incredible and we are delighted we are able to manage and maintain this adult burn support option thanks to the generous annual donation from The Company of Actuaries Charitable Trust – the charitable arm of the Worshipful Company of Actuaries based in the City of London.
On the first Wednesday of each month, the chat is online 7.30-8.15pm followed by a Zoom social from 8.15-9.00pm. For more info on the weekly burn support live chat, please visit adultburnsupportuk.org and click the blue Live Chat button.

Amazon Firesticks For in-patient TV’s
Dan's Fund For Burns (DFFB) were pleased to be able to help the adult burns team at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, in August of this year when, after much frustration with patient televisions on the ward not working due to lack of signal, they discovered that the televisions worked well when an Amazon firestick was used.
WorkingTV’sforpatients!
Terena, a Jr Sister, requested some help from DFFB to purchase a few firesticks for the ward to be able to provide these to patients so they are able to watch television and help pass the time during their stay in the adult burns ward. The DFFB Trustees were delighted to agree a donation that enabled the ward to purchase six Amazon Firesticks which was ‘very much appreciated’ by the adult burns team in Chelmsford.
A Physio’s perspective on how DFFB helps
Until very recently, I was the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist at the Mersey Burn Centre, Whiston Hospital, a position I held for almost 29 years. During that time, I have seen the enormous benefit Dan’s Fund for Burns has given to both burn survivors and burn services.
Direct support given to burn survivors includes financial help through crisis funding and emotional, psychological and practical help through the online chat and befriender peer support service and the burn survivor weekends.
All these avenues of support reduce the feeling of isolation which may be experienced following burn injury.
The weekly online live chat enable survivors to share as little or as much as they wish and help build confidence in a safe space.
Over the last six years, DFFB has provided the Mersey Burn Centre and other burn services across the UK with two scar management devices, LymphaTouch in 2018 and LPG endermologie in 2024.
As well as providing the machines, DFFB has also funded the associated training and support. Both these devices provide clinicians with additional scar modulation tools, advance our understanding of scar management, contribute to continued professional development,
and provide opportunity for collaborative research. DFFB is a small charity which makes a big difference. Burn survivors and burn services have many reasons to be grateful for the support they provide.
This is why I have recently offered to volunteer with them and help this brilliant charity to grow it’s services.

We were delighted to be invited to speak at the International Society for Burn Injuries and the British Burn Association annual conference in the “How the world supports burn survivors” session. The three main UK burns charities started the session explaining how we work, how we work together and how we differ, before talks from global charities, Georgia Firefighters, Phoenix Society and Interburns.
Hosted by our sponsors, Moor Instruments, we were extremely busy throughout the conference on the stand, giving us the chance to finalise delivery information of Burn Sims Kits, discussing ongoing projects and potential future collaborative ideas. Dan’s Fund donations are very evident across the NHS and we were pleased to support Karen Highway, an Adult Burns Specialist Nurse from Southmead, present her poster on the YABA camps.
Karen reports…
Many UK burns services offer children's burns camps but with limited funds, there are few opportunities within their local area for teenagers reaching 18. For the past ten years, the national Young Adult Burns Association (YABA) has brought survivors aged 18-25 together for annual weekend camps to share experiences and build nurturing peer support networks. The camps are meticulously planned by a group of experienced volunteers, several are burn survivors who have attended children’s camps, so their insight is invaluable in planning what activities will work.
I have been volunteering with the national YABA camp since it started, and have been privileged to be part of these young people's lives and see their inspirational journeys after their hospital challenges. As a YABA volunteer you are mainly in a supportive role ensuring the
smooth running of the camp, assisting some with sport/day trip activities and providing a listening ear with cup of tea when needed.
In August, I had the opportunity to present the findings of this year’s camp questionnaire at the joint International Society of Burns Injuries and British Burns Association Conference in Birmingham, addressing the well-being benefits of the camps. Overwhelmingly, the feedback demonstrated that the young adults felt the camp increased their psychosocial well-being due to being in a safe non-judgemental environment where they can share experiences face to face, and forge opportunities for ongoing peer support network.
The financial support of DFFB has been instrumental in enabling these annual camps, and in partnership with DFFB fund we will continue to provide young adult survivors with the opportunity to attend these camps, and access effective peer support format.

Young Adult Burns Association hits Somerset
In March 2024, the 10th Young Adult Burns Association (YABA) weekend residential trip took place at Cheddar Woods Resort and Spa in Somerset.
The idea of the weekend is to provide a semi structured environment for young adults who have experienced a burn injury to be able to share experiences, have a break from everyday life and have fun.
Staying across five self-catering lodges the group came together for ice breaker games, evening meals, swimming and a trip to the Cheddar Caves, as well as having time as smaller groups to use the gym, bowling, and generally relax.
The weekend provided the opportunity for young adults to make new connections as well as see some old friends and everyone having the option to try new things, whether that be local cakes, swimming, climbing Jacob’s ladder in the rain or try a hot tub for the first time! The only downside may have been upsetting the local villagers, when the Saturday night Chinese takeaway order for 27 people caused a big delay for everyone else and a quick exit when collecting it!
This year one of the young adults who is also a trained therapist, facilitated a workshop on the Sunday morning for the whole group with the support of three older burns survivors, which was well received by everyone.
All attendees (and organisers) would like to thank Dan’s Fund for making the weekend possible and the
continued support they offer to young adult burns survivors.
The plan is to organise another weekend in 2025, for Young Adult Burns Survivors aged 18-25. Please get in touch with Dan’s Fund For Burns if you would like more information or email martin.palmer@nhs.net . You can see from some of the feedback comments, the weekend provides a space where everyone feels supported and understood: lots of support and benefits.
‘Connecting to people with similar experiences to me’
‘I received help with many questions about the short term future and I got the body confidence to not hide my belly when in / around the hot tub (I used to be really insecure)’
‘Sharing and hearing lived experiences with fellow burns survivors’
‘Conversations happen really organically when given the right environment to do so, I made a lot of really good connections with people outside of my immediate friendship group.’

16 Burn Sims Training Kits distributed across the UK
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dan’s Fund For Burns for their generous donation of moulage training kits to burns services across the United Kingdom.
This thoughtful contribution will make a significant impact on staff training by enhancing the realism of simulation exercises by using the sleeves on mannequins or humans.
The moulage makeup kits will be invaluable in creating realistic burns injuries, allowing healthcare professionals to practice and refine their skills in a controlled, high-fidelity environment. By replicating the physical appearance of burns, these kits will enable more immersive and effective simulation training, ultimately improving the quality of care delivered to burns patients.
High-quality simulation training is crucial for ensuring that staff are prepared to handle the complexities and challenges of treating burn injuries. With the aid of these moulage kits, our training programs will be able to more accurately mimic the real-life scenarios that healthcare professionals face. This will help our teams to build their confidence, develop their skills, and respond swiftly and effectively in emergency situations.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dan’s Fund For Burns for their continued support of burns care in the UK. Your generous donation will have a lasting impact on the quality of care provided to patients, and we are immensely grateful for your partnership in advancing healthcare education and training.

20th Anniversary Ball smashes target
After a year of planning, Trustee Jen Dorricott and I were thrilled to host our 20th Anniversary Celebration of Dan's Fund at the Hurlingham Club on Saturday, 7th October 2023.
The venue was stunning and beautifully decorated by Tabitha from Floradora.
We were lucky to have Standbuilder to build us these amazing Sponsors Boards and stage Back Boards and Lucid Group designing our program.
We had chocolates donated by the Broughton family on each place setting from Choconchoc and with the support of our sponsors, sold out table sales and amazing auction prize donations, we were delighted to raise over £100,000. The event was more than a fundraiser though, as we set about celebrating 20 years of hard work and achievements.
Our volunteers worked hard all night and we couldn't have done it without their help.
Just incredible generosity was seen from everyone and as I looked around the room I was blessed to see so many different people who have supported this journey.
Thank you to all those who came or supported it in one way or another.
There were of course speeches from myself, Mr Balj Dheansa, both Jen and my burn surgeon and a Dan’s
Scott (right) wins Qatar Airways Business Class Flights
Fund Patron, who explained what Dan’s Fund means to the NHS. This was followed by a Q&A with Claudia Jessie, who plays me in the tv series “Bali 2002”.
A video showcasing the impactful work Dans Fund For Burns does for burn survivors and the NHS followed and we then launched into the live auction, run by the fabulous auctioneer, Addison Gelpey.
The band, Cinnamon Street was absolutely fabulous and had the dance floor packed, as we partied the night away.
“A true celebration of 20 years of turning evil into good.”

Tyrrells Wood & Sunningdale Heath Golf Club Ladies Day
A
tale of two fortunes
We had a mix of fortune with the weather this year, with torrential rain at Tyrrells Wood this September sadly cutting our competition to nine holes only.
We still had good fun and enjoyed a delicious lunch and catching up with friends whilst raising a decent amount on the raffle and it gave me longer on the microphone!
Congratulations to Carol Timmins, Vicky Robinson, Angela Lewis and Catherine Petrie on the winning score (41).
Sunningdale Heath in May saw slightly kinder weather with all four seasons in one day!
Congratulations go to the winners The Worplesdon Wallies (52.4), closely followed by The Birdies (53.4) and The Seeking Birdies (54.4)
Thank you to Rosemary and her helpers, a special mention to Chris Pickett on the cards and to all our lady golfers who come and support rain or shine!

Oceanus Racing had an AMAZING season, not the finish in the final race they had been hoping for with their first mechanical issue all year, but they walked away as winners of the Class 1L championship in their first year with VT.
They are kindly donating 10% of all sponsorship raised to Dan’s Fund For Burns from this past season.
Their new sponsors, Oceanus Charters, run by Jen
Dorricott, one of our burn survivor Trustees, has also kindly sponsored the Bali Legends in their Dubai 7s campaign this year.
Good luck to Richard & team for 2025 and for the award ceremony on 30th November 2024!

dnata Bali LegendsEmirates Airline Dubai 7s 2023
In an ever-competitive International Vets section at the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby 7s, the dnata Bali Legends are proud to have become one of the leading contenders over the past 14 years.
We have won the plate tournament and been cup semifinalists on seven occasions and made it through to the final once.
In 2023, we had a really strong team lined up with the likes of Aaron Persico, 56 caps for Italy, Ethan Matthews, current UAE National rugby 7s team, the brothers PierreGilles and Raphael Lakafia, France and France 7s, Sam Cavan, Jamaica 7s, Toby Arnold, NZ 7s, Alec Jenkins, Wales 7’s and Will Cliff, just retired from Sale Sharks to name but a few.
We were extremely unlucky to be knocked out of the cup in the Quarter Finals (5-7 points) by the eventual tournament winners, This was disappointing after a very dominant competition to this point, but this loss pushed us into the Plate competition which we won comfortably
and we only conceded seven points over the three day competition.
We have retained a large proportion of last year’s squad and the boys are keen to win the Cup this time as we head out later on this year.
Thanks go to our title sponsors, dnata, who also this year supported us at our 20th Anniversary charity ball through dnata Travel, along with Herbert Smith Freehills and Binns Fencing Ltd who also sponsored us and took tables. We were also lucky to have SilberArrows Ltd, Return on Investment, The Gorgeous Flower Company and Engie on board again last year.
All sponsorship monies in excess of tour costs raised is donated to Dan’s Fund and we were pleased to raise over £14,500 last year. A special shout out to Alec Jenkin’s son for his hard work fundraising for us last year and to Andy Farrell for signing one of our shirts which was sold for a fine amount to a supporter of the fund in the crowd.
This year we say goodbye to the Gorgeous Flower Company as sponsors due to Sam and Paul selling their business and Engie Solutions who have provided us with bus services for many years so thank you to them. Happily, we welcome The Holiday Inn, Business Bay and Oceanus Charters on board as new sponsors for 2024.
My husband, Paul and I head out to Dubai on the 26th November for the Bali Legends 15th Emirates Airlines Dubai 7s competition and we look forward to another successful tournament both on and off the pitch.
A huge thanks to Mike Quinn from Rhino Mena for sorting out our kit for the team and to Trefor Elliott and Paul Webb for their tireless work as managers.
It requires a huge amount of effort to take a professional team to play in the International Vets and we couldn’t do it without the help of the Sponsors, Players and Mangers.
Seeing the boys in all their kit and playing their hearts out on the pitch, always makes me so proud to be a part of this team and it is a perfect memorial for not only Dan, but all the other rugby boys lost in Bali in 2002.

Dan’s Fund Royal Parks Ball & Run double fun 2023
We realised it was an epic weekend last year when the Royal Parks Half Marathon fell on the Sunday 8th October 2023. This was the day after our planned 20th Anniversary Ball at The Hurlingham Gardens in London.
Four brave and loyal souls took on the challenge to do the double - to party at the Ball and then run the half marathon the following morning! Three of the four had flown in from the USA and Canada which made it all the more impressive! Congratulations to Lev Bukhman, Al Turnbull, Jeremy Alberga and Tanya Anderson for this incredible achievement.
Other runners on the day included Simone Schehtman, Kimberley Turner, Mark Bunting and Denise Kelly and all our runners did extremely well in lovely sunny conditions.
Thanks to their hard earned efforts, we were delighted to raise £8,000 from the Royal Parks Half Marathon last year and when tallied up with the Ball proceeds, a massive £113,000 was raised over the Anniversary weekend.
Thank you to all our runners and those who donated!

Woking Golf Club Charity Day
Such a fun day of golf at our bi-annual Woking charity day, which we held on Friday 28th June. We were lucky that the weather gods were on our side and finally some sunshine appeared.
Thanks to our helpers, the golfers enjoyed their beers and mulligans around the course and played some great golf before an amazing carvery meal in the dining room. The course was in great condition and with everyone being generous on the raffle, mulligans and auction, we raised £7,750 on the day.
A huge amount of work goes into these days by Rosemary and her team of helpers and we had the whole family, Lucy, Al, Paul and Jennifer and Joy helping too this time!
Thanks for all the donations of raffle prizes, prizes and auction items. We couldn't do it without them. Fundraising should be fun as well as rewarding and this day certainly was!
Thank you to the club for all their efforts and looking forward to Friday 26th June 2026 when we shall return again! FUNDRAISING
Lamberhurst Golf Club Captain’s Charity Day
One month later, we were delighted to support John Seale’s Captain’s Charity Day at Lamberhurst Golf Club in Kent.
John, an ex-HKFC rugby player, was kind enough to choose Dan’s Fund For Burns as his charity for his Captaincy year and we were not aware until afterwards that there were connections with some members having been to school with Dan during his Tonbridge school days!
I was delighted to get a team together, Christine BarkerGoldie and her boyfriend Paul Challinor joined Mike McDermott and myself and we were pleased to place fifth overall in a competitively busy field of 25 teams on the day!
With a generous raffle, delicious pork belly lunch afterwards and a lively auction the day raised over £7,000.
We look forward to hearing at the end of his year the total raised, but John is very much hoping it will be around the £15,000 mark. Thanks so much to John and all of his members and team at Lamberhurst Golf Club.

FUNDRAISER
It is so lovely when burn survivors who have been supported by Dan’s Fund For Burns choose to give back.
Mark had sustained a burn injury in an accident at a wedding they were attending. One year on, they held a fabulously fun night. Emma explains below…
On Saturday 5th October we held a charity evening 'Rock in your Frock' in aid of the Dan’s Fund for Burns & Colyton Primary Friends & Family.
We advertised it as 'Wedding Themed' because Mark’s burns accident happened at a wedding. It was a fantastic evening, some people came in their wedding dresses & others in a bridesmaid frock.
Mark did a speech & thanked everyone for their support.
The two ladies that really helped him with the steady water flow on the night were there & he was very teary thanking them as the hospital had said he would have definitely needed skin grafts if they hadn't done such a good job.
We did the bar & the raffle - everyone was so kind with donations.
We are delighted to give something back to Dan’s Fund For burns as they helped us so much after Mark’s accident
Each of our two chosen charities have received £876.23.
Truly, we are forever grateful.

Legacy Giving
Have you considered leaving a legacy to Dan’s Fund For Burns in your will?
Legacy giving is a planned donation that designates a part of an individual’s estate to a chosen charity. By remembering Dan’s Fund in your will, your gift would enable us to continue our valuable work in the aftercare world of burns helping burn survivors rebuild their lives, often after life changing injuries and allows you to create a lasting legacy.
We understand that writing or updating your will is a particularly personal decision, and know that taking care of family, friends and loved ones come first. However, legacy giving can be part of sensible inheritance tax planning for your loved ones so to consider leaving a legacy to Dan’s Fund would not only benefit burn survivors long after your passing, it could make sense when writing a will.
How to donate
We depend on donations to carry on doing the work we do.
There are many ways to donate to Dan’s Fund For Burns, from one-off donations to monthly, quarterly or annual donations via credit card, bank transfer, paypal and more.
Please visit our website at dansfundforburns.org, click on the donate button and choose the option that suits you best.
If you’d like to support us through fundraising, please get in touch to discuss any fundraising ideas you may have.
