The Santa Ynez Valley Arts Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, supporting the arts within the Santa Ynez Valley through affordable opportunities for artists to show and sell artwork, collaborations with non-profits and businesses on programs and events, investment in higher education for high school art students through scholarships, and a variety of outreach avenues, such as this digital arts magazine, that bring greater awareness to the cultural heart beat of the area.

Message from 3rd District Arts Commissioner Stacey Otte-Demangate Last November, I was appointed to be an Arts Commissioner to represent the Third District of Santa Barbara County. I’m very grateful for this opportunity to serve the community in a broader arts capacity than my day job as executive director of the Wildling Museum of Art and Nature. There are now three Commissioners representing District 3. Samuel Duarte hails from Guadalupe, I live in Los Alamos and work in Solvang, and Kim Yasuda is an artist and professor at UCSB. You may know that District 3 runs from Guadalupe to Isla Vista and your commissioners now represent that full geographic span. With Samuel and Kim just recently joining the Commission, that leaves me able to focus primarily on the Santa Ynez Valley. I am still very much in learning mode and joined the Commission at a time of great change. There are all new staff at the County’s Office of Arts and Culture and many new commissioners as well. I’m reaching out directly to the arts community in the Valley via the Santa Ynez Valley Art’s eZine as a way to introduce myself and share information about the Commission and/or department, such as events coming up and funding opportunities and encourage you to let me know if you have questions. Arts Commission meetings are open to the public and we welcome members of the public to join meetings and share ideas during the public comment period at the beginning of each meeting. Meetings are on the 2nd Wednesdays of the month and alternate from North County to South County (and sometimes are here in the Valley). Save the Date: Join us on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at 3 p.m. to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Arts Commission! Details and location will be shared soon. Please feel free to email me at stacey.otte@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns! And be sure to check out the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture’s revamped website! It’s beautiful and informative. http://www.sbac.ca.gov/ Artfully yours, Stacey Otte-Demangate Arts Commissioner, District 3

ART WITHOUT BORDERS EXHIBIT

Sheila Krausse: California Dreamin'

Detail: Sheila Krausse, California Dreamin'

Through November 2, 2017 The Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Cafe 2870 Grand Ave, Los Olivos

Sheila Krausse grew up in Napa, California and moved to the central coast as a teenager. At an early age, her Mother, an artist encouraged her to draw and paint. She took art classes through high school, continued at San Jose State University and Cal Poly as well as private lessons from experienced artists. In her twenties, she belonged to the Santa Maria Artist Association and was a charter member of the Los Padres Artist Guild. Currently she participates with the Valley Art Gallery, Los Padres Artist Guild, Studios on the Park in Paso Robles, Arts Obispo, Gala de Arte, Santa Ynez Valley Arts, and the Art Center at Morro Bay. She is the resident artist at Thomas Hill Organics, an upscale restaurant in Paso Robles, and Carriage Vineyards in Templeton. Over the years, Sheila has shown her work at local art events, offices, banks, hospitals, restaurants, tasting rooms, and vineyards. Her paintings are in homes in several states. Sheila's focus is on oils and acrylics with a concentration on central coast landscapes. She uses bright colors with plenty of texture. Her style is a blend of impressionism and realism. After teaching 35 years (including art), she retired and started a business designing children's clothes using previously worn denim. Her "Little Munchkins" clothes are now sold at five stores. "I love art for many reasons I enjoy the solitude, get lost in the creation, and my creative mind takes control. Often included are memories of my youth, especially of my Mother painting or designing a special party dress just for me. Her encouragement to follow my dreams has made a tremendous influence on my life. I enjoy many of the local landscapes of the central coast including the rolling hills and coastlines. Trees always seem to be included in my work. I get an idea in my mind on focus on creating the image on canvas." ~Sheila Krausse This exhibit is one of a continuing series of shows made possible by the commitment of the Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café to showcase local art and artists. Santa Ynez Valley Art Association, a nonprofit arts organization with over thirty years of history in the area, coordinates and manages the “art without borders” installation in cooperation with the Café. A portion of art sales benefits the organization, and these collaborative efforts - a way to keep art alive and accessible in the Santa Ynez Valley. WILDLING MUSEUM OF ART & NATURE 1511 Mission Dr., Solvang www.wildlingmuseum.org

Celebrate closing of Animals: A–Z Closing on October 9, 2017 In celebration of its final weekend, artist Lynn Hanson will be at the Wildling on Sunday, October 8th at 4 pm to discuss her artistic training, techniques, Lynn Hanson, The Tracks Coarcoal on 1916 railroad map, blueprint, 2016 and body of work. “All of my work emanates from my constant attention and visceral connection to the natural world from a childhood stalking garter snakes at Whiskey Ditch in rural Minnesota to a daily ritual of exploring beaches and canyons along the California coast.” The work carries an undercurrent of longing: drawings of native wildlife on vintage maps, paintings: the gray sea, heaps of rope, and shelters of wrack and bramble, in addition, pinhole and chlorophyll photography from the wanderings. Hanson’s most recent solo exhibition wrack & bramble (field notes and meditations) was at Lora Schlesinger Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, CA. Currently at the Wildling Museum, a drawing is included in the Animals: A-Z exhibition and a chlorophyll print is included in the Trees of the Tri-Counties Nature Photography show. After Lynn’s talk, Executive Director Stacey Otte-Demangate will lead an exclusive tour of Animals: A-Z for Wildling Members. Get the inside scoop into how the exhibit was created and some behind-the-scenes information about the artworks before we bid them farewell. Artists in the exhibit hail from a total of six countries (Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Bhutan, Russia and USA) with strong local representation as well.

Artist Talks at the Wildling The Wildling Museum of Art & Nature is pleased to announce the upcoming installments in the Artist Talk Series. The last Sunday of September and October offer insight into 2 different artists’ methods, evolution, and body of work.

New Oil Paintings by local artist Renée Kelleher at the Los Olivos General Store

Renée Kelleher, Dierberg Stsr Lane Vineyards

Through December 31st Inspired by the local Santa Ynez landscape, artist Renée Kelleher captures rolling ranch lands, hillside vineyards, and mountain views. She describes her inspiration, “I have always been fascinated by the play of light and shadow. When the light path on something familiar catches my eye, it is as if I am seeing it for the first time. I am inspired to capture the moment with my paintbrush. If my viewers are able to experience that moment in my painting I feel that I have successfully expressed myself.”

THE CYPRESS GALLERY

119 E. Cypress Ave, Lompoc • Open Tue–Sun, 12-4PM & 12–5PM Daylight Savings www.lompocvalleyartassociation.com

"A Walk Through the Cypress" September 2017 • By Terry Taylor Lompoc Valley Art Association held its semi-annual/occasional Studio Tour in late August and the turnout of visitors making the rounds to the artists" workplaces exceeded our expectations. Thank you to all who attended--I hope you enjoyed seeing where your favorite painters, photographers and artisan crafters create their pieces; perhaps you even bought something to adorn your home or to give for a gift, as there were a lot of irresistible items for sale. It was a fun day with beautiful late summer weather and friendly art-lovers to meet at every stop. When you visit the gallery this month, you will see the bright, colorful works of featured artist Judith Grames-Lyra who paints in watercolor and acrylics. Her show, entitled "Family Tree," is inspired by a recent train trip to the East Coast and Canada to search out some of her family genealogy. Most of the works displayed are florals, which Judith does so well and she includes some family photos and background, as well. My favorite painting is a bright, cheerful still life entitled "Protea." Please join the artist at the show reception on Saturday, September 2nd, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. to enjoy some refreshment and pleasurable viewing. The show runs through September 25th. The People's Choice award for August was given to Jane Kametani for her beautiful photograph "Heading Out to Sea." Congratulations, Jane. The main gallery has a lot to view this month, including some great photography by Tom Chrones. His large print entitled "Briode Church" gave me the feeling that the pipe organ was Judith Grames Lyra, Protea about to play a loud, echoing hymn to welcome in the congregants. Mary Whittemore's colored pencil drawing "On the Road" is an exciting depiction of a shiny motorcycle, and Mary's precision and attention to detail really is stunning. Penny Lee, one of our foremost painter of dogs and other pets has brought in an acrylic painting of a dog called "Benji," and it is adorable. A couple other favorites of mine are Gil Andersen's 4-piece tile plaque "Goleta Depot," and Edward Heinitz' watercolor entitled "Weber's Farm." Cypress Gallery has many gift items made by member artists and artisan crafts Mary Whittemore, On the Road persons. You'll find a multitude of hand-crafted items priced affordably: small original paintings and prints featuring La Purisima Mission, Lompoc scenes, animals and florals, as well as jewelry, glass pieces, pottery, gourds, textile items and hand-crafted Lompoc souvenirs. In addition, there is an extensive selection of greeting cards for all occasions. Please join us at LVAA's monthly general meeting (open to the public), held most months on the first Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Stone Pine Hall, 210 South H Street, Lompoc. After refreshments and a short business meeting, there is an art presentation and/or demonstration by a local artist, which I know you will find interesting. Cypress Gallery is operated by the members of the Lompoc Valley Art Association and is located at 119 East Cypress Avenue, Lompoc. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. 805-737-1129, lompocart.com .

Inspired Art & Auras

Painting the beauty of heaven and earth through my vision by Mikki Alhard Artist Reception: Saturday, October 7 @2:00 pm Come and see your aura in color! As long as I can remember I've had the ability to sense color and people and I am sensitive to the feel and essence of the energy that surrounds people, places, and things. It is how I discovered my intuitive abilities and began my professional life as a counselor over 30 years ago. The inspiration to better understand the mysteries that lie beyond normal perception is what led me to the study of auras. The universe is full of art and inspiration, that is what everyone can see, but it takes vision to pick paint and brush to illustrate thoughts, visions, and this beautiful universe into paintings. I am always looking to create meaning to my work. Art is the medium for the bigger message.
