IBRBS Summer Newsletter 2017

Do you feel the excitement in the air? I think the beginnings of our season in a sense, starts with all the Christmas in July appearances and promotions. Doesn’t it spur more phone calls and emails for you from clients reserving their visits from Santa? I always notice a significant increase during July. At the very least it reminds us it is only four months or less until many of us will be in suit entertaining our little believers. I know many of you share in the belief of just how lucky we are to be able to portray Santa Claus, the most important icon in a young child’s life. To me, it is truly a revered honor and I often think…”Did God really intend for us old men could have so much FUN?” It is time to start the process, renew your membership (still only $25) get set to order your Background screening (only $5.00 for IBRBS Members) along with your Professional Entertainers Liability Insurance ($165)(no increase in premium) which now includes the World Wide Coverage endorsement. Congratulations to all of you as we have surpassed the 1700 member mark, far outdistancing all others. If possible, we ask each of you to realize with 1700 members, we volunteers often get behind in the crush of processing memberships in October and November, so please don’t wait, please consider renewing your membership, your background check and your insurance during August and September if at all possible. However, be reminded if your venue asks for a background screening within 60 days of the start of your season, you may need to wait until late September or October. As you peruse your IBRBS Newsletter, you will be pleased to see all the photos of Santa groups and affiliated IBRBS Chapters. Your Board of Directors is equally excited with the growth of our affiliated IBRBS Chapters as we are with our overall membership growth. Visit the website and check out the latest list. There may be a new Chapter in your area. If not, contact our membership team. Additional Liability Insurance is provided without cost for all IBRBS members attending any affiliated IBRBS Chapter’s regularly scheduled meeting. Perhaps you have heard or read this statement, but what does it really mean? First, it is not without cost, IBRBS pays a significant premium each year for our IBRBS Liability policy which increases based on our total number of members. Secondly, If an accident occurs during any “get together” of a group of Santas, there is a strong possibility that each and every Santa in attendance could be named in a lawsuit. Third, those IBRBS members in attendance will be provided legal representation to defend themselves. (This means you do not have to spend $10,000 to hire an attorney to defend yourself). This does not apply to meetings of groups of Santas who are NOT an affiliated Chapter of IBRBS. Easy answer, consider having your group become an affiliated Chapter. A big thanks to all of you, our members, for your continued love, support and membership, as we continue to grow. Our unity becomes ever stronger providing IBRBS the opportunity of adding more and more member benefits designed to keep giving back to our loyal member. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President/CEO for the last four years. Robert “Bob” Elkin

Real Santas United celebrate 4 years of progress to end Childhood Obesity By Helen Nielsen It was Christmas in July again this year at the Over The Line “beach baseball” tournament held in Mission Bay, San Diego. For the fourth year the Real Santas United to end Childhood Obesity and Promote Children’s Health fielded their largest team ever, which this year included “Lady Santas.” As in prior years, the team was a sensation at the 64th tourney on Fiesta island. In past years the Santa team scored a 1st and 2nd place in one of the Men’s categories. Their biggest hits, however, have been their advocacy activities to help parents wean their kids off the Fast, Junk (now called “Snack”) and Processed food like substances” which is leading to record levels of diet derived illnesses in kids never seen in them just 20 years ago. The statistics show that illnesses like non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, bleeding bowel syndrome, diabetes, even heart disease and cancer, which are now showing up in elementary school aged children, have exploded. “It’s all due to the “SAD” diet (Standard American Diet) which is loaded with Sugar, chemicals, pesticides and preservative with the “processing” stripping out both the nutrients and the fiber essential for good digestion” says Sustainable Santa® aka Santa Richard Eckfield, Captain of the OTL team who has a Summer Home in Carlsbad. His Winter home is “you know where.” The Santas have educational programs which teach us parents how to read “food labels” and understand what is said there, and what “essential data” is missing. Their biggest effort, however, comes at Holiday time when they deploy Healthy Santas to Farmers Markets all over California. Locally, last year they had seven healthy, health promoting Santas in 12 Markets in the San Diego County – a number which started with just one in 2013 and the State-wide list will grow larger again this year, particularly in Northern California. There, in addition to taking that Holiday picture with the kids, they pass out IBRBS produced cards containing Santa’s 3 Food Rules” designed to get kids off the “bad stuff.” Then they send the kids into the market on a “treasure hunt” looking for “Santa’s Garden Bites” – tastes of wholesome real foods. These are provided by the farmer vendors and include foods: fresh, raw, dehydrated or fermented – many of which the children have never tasted, but soon come to love. “We also show Moms and Dads the importance of ‘Eating the Rainbow of vegetables’ highlighting the differing nutritional values of each color”, says IBRBS member Santa Glen Bailey, the OTL Team member who staffs the Tuesday evening Downtown market in Escondido, CA. “We have them make a game of picking veggies of their kids favorite color – and showing them how to prepare them to preserve both the taste and their nutritional value. Perhaps all Reds this week, Purple and Yellow the next,” says Santa Glen. At the OTL, in addition to their batting and fielding talents, their entire ensemble of programs to promote kids health are on display. In 2014, their first year fielding an all Santa team in the 1,200 team competition, Santa Glen encountered the 6 foot tall beauty Carlin Palenske, a Kindergarten through 5th grade Special Ed Teacher who was very pregnant. Carlin, who in 2000 had been the “Miss Emerson” – Queen of the Tournament had asked the 5 foot, 4 inch Santa Glen to promise to “measure up” to the responsibility of helping parents get their kids off the bad “SAD” diet and on to eating “Real Food.” Standing on his tiptoes, Santa Glen made that commitment. “I love what these Guys and now Lady Santas are doing” says Carlin Palenske, whose son Parker is now almost 3. I asked them to help make the San Diego area kids into healthy playmates for him. “They are doing a super job of doing just that” says Carlin. Continued on page 6

Real Santas United celebrate 4 years of progress to end Childhood Obesity Continued from page 5 The addition of the Lady Santas, to the effort is the result of needing to change the Coca-Cola inspired image of Santa who since 1931 has been an obese male clad in a Coke Can colored outfit, says Lady Santa Sara, a dual citizenship Swedish-American engineer now living in Carlsbad. “In Europe we have Lady Santas whom we call Snow Queens, who not only accompany our Santas as they make their rounds, but on their own focus on bringing Joy, Happiness and Good Health, to the kids and never distribute sugar-snacks. If we are to truly change the eating culture of American kids to prefer eating ‘Real Food’ we likely will need the help of these “Santa Nanas,” says Santa Sara. Santa Sara is part of SWEA – the Swedish Women’s Educational Association – one of the many “women’s empowerment” groups the Santas are teaming with to promote children’s wellness. Changing our eating culture can be done, says Sustainable Santa®. It’s just like we changed Americans thoughts about issues like drunk driving, smoking, bike helmets for kids and motorcycle riders, car seats, seat belts and the use of throwaway plastic bags. With the help of serious patriotic Santas and Mrs. Clauses – we can Make America HEALTHY Again! Become a “Claus with a cause,” says Sustainable Santa.® Join us in the fun. STAND UP to give kids the greatest gift of all - of Good Health. Don’t just STAND BY and watch the tsunami of ill-health grow! The cause is great, and the money earned in the markets is good. Any interested Santas please contact Santa@SustainableSanta.com.

Real Santas always live in the “hope” that good things will happen. Thus there is always hope that the next time Sustainable Santa® encounters this reporter he will recall the rest of the interview and make that the focus of the story, rather than the unseasonably warm and humid day we had opening day at the OTL.

Click here to go to video 7 NBC TV coverage of OTL with Santa quote about global warming worried about the ice melting at the North Pole. Most of the 3 minute interview was about the Real Santas United’s cause of helping the kids break away from the “BAD” diet (Basic American Diet) and embracing “Eating Real Food” and that was not used. I was working in the mall I had a little girl ask me for a bed and a doll for Christmas. I asked was it a bed for the doll and she said No, she wanted a bed and a doll because she had to sleep in her mother’s bed because she didn’t have her own bed. I looked at the little girl and she was about 5 years old and dressed in a purple polyester dress that looked like something someone got from the Salvation Army maybe 30 years ago. I spoke with the mother and the mother wouldn’t look me in the eye but said oh she has a bed. The little girl ratted her mother out and said “That’s your bed, Mom. I have to sleep in your bed.” The mother was too proud to admit she needed help. I spoke with my coworkers at the Santa set and decided immediately, we were going to do something for her. After my shift, I stopped at Walmart and got a bedframe and pillow donated by the store manager. The managers at BJ’s Wholesale Club couldn’t get the mattress and box spring approved by Corporate so two managers purchased the mattress and box spring themselves along with a sheet set. I stopped at Sears where I used to work and they donated a comforter and sneakers for the girl. We guessed on the size and got it right. One of the store owners in the mall that has several kiosks, bought her a winter coat. JC Penney took up a collection in their breakroom with the employees. ShopRite Grocery Store donated a large fruit basket of fresh fruit. The movie theater even donated a gift certificate. When I spoke with the manager on duty at Target, he said let's go pick out a nice doll for her. He donated a Cabbage Patch Kid in the same color dress as what the girl was wearing when I spoke with her. My employer at my day job, Lowes, donated a live Christmas Tree, lights and tree stand. My mechanic donated an IPAD Air 2. Everything was donated NEW and all told, I raised about $1,500 of items for the mother and daughter in 6 days. A couple coworkers from the Santa Set bought pajamas for the girl and some items for the mother. On the way over, I even got a friend that owns a pizza shop to make and donate a fresh hot pizza. I phoned the mother beforehand to make sure she and the daughter would be there and I delivered everything fully dressed as Santa on December 23rd. The Christmas tree they had looked like it was one branch from an artificial tree with nothing on one side. I trimmed the new tree fully dressed as Santa and set it up for her with lights and decorations. A next door neighbor of mine accompanied me to help bring things in and to assemble the bed. The little girl was so ecstatic and happy. The mother confided in me that she didn’t know what she was going to do because she had NOTHING for her daughter for Christmas. I asked the mother to be willing to let people know she needs help when she needs it because she will never know when or where help will come. I am sure the little girl believes in Santa and maybe now even the mother does too. This isn’t the most heartbreaking request I’ve had before. A couple years ago, I had a little boy ask me for parents for Christmas because he had been in 4 foster homes. After I got rid of the lump in my throat, I assured him we were just trying to find the right parents for him. But when the little girl asked me for something as basic as a doll and a bed, that was something I knew I could take care of. She helped me realize how much we take for granted and helped me realize the true meaning of Christmas spirit. I didn’t just LOOK like Santa for them. I actually got to BE Santa for them. I did not mention the family’s name to protect their privacy. The local paper, the Pocono Record, was going to run an article on it, but Debbie Reynolds died and they suddenly didn’t have space in the paper.

Sincerely, Santa Bill Asher Santa@SantaForHire.Info

The Georgia Metro Santas continue their tradition of meeting every two or three months to enjoy a great meal and Santa brotherhood. Our most recent gathering was held on June 17 th at the Hot & Cold Buffet in Snellville, Georgia. We had almost 30 Santas and Mrs. Clauses along with two vendors – both of whom drove quite a distance in Atlanta traffic to sell their fabulous wares. Willie Smith came to share his Naughty/Nice Leather books, leather Santa belts and other leather Santa accessories. Debra Medley brought an array of her lovely clothing items for both Santa and Mrs. Claus. Both of these vendors are talented artists and we appreciate their sharing the time and efforts with us. On a very sad note, we were reminded of the passing of Santa Dale Banner. He had been treated for esophageal cancer but it returned and metastasized into bone cancer. His death came very quickly so he did not have to suffer, but those of us who cared for him did not get a chance to say our good-byes. His lovely wife Vi managed to make it through his memorial service but then was hospitalized herself a few days later where she endured two major surgeries on her spine. As of this writing she has completed rehab and has impressed her doctors with her recovery. Now she will need all of the Santa community prayers as she continues to heal from her surgeries and really begins to heal from the loss of her life partner. We wish you the best Vi. One of our members, Mike Allen, decided our group needed a casual shirt that can be worn when we attend functions together. He did a great job and several members picked up their shirts at the meeting. The rest of us ordered ours. (Order yours from Mike at 770-383-2411.) We will get a chance to show them off when we attend the upcoming Southeastern semiannual meeting of IBRBS this coming fall. We will be attending an Atlanta Braves game as a group as part of the meeting. The meeting is September 9 – 11 2017. More info available in this newsletter. Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday August 19 at 11:00 am at the Hot & Cold Buffett in Snellville, GA. All Santas are invited! There is no membership fee. We are an affiliated chapter of IBRBS.

Why every Santa needs St. Nicholas Here is a happy story from my friend Santa and his partner Saint Nicholas. On December 5th, 2016, Santa was asked to go to the children’s hospital in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada where they would take the photos of the newborns in the Neonatal Unit. Some of the babies are very small. It all went well and then a nurse came and asked Santa to visit a special private room where a child was very ill and dying. When an “ask” comes like that, we all know we have no choice. It is always startling to go into a room and not know what is waiting for you so I often pause and ask St. Nicholas to "go and prepare the way for me" so that I am not alone when I go through the doors. (John 14 can be comforting.) When we went into the room, a mother, father and two grandparents were there with a six month old. The child lay on her front on a red velvet piece of fabric, and there were Christmas ornaments in a halo. From a bag, the mother took a pair of white angel wings and placed them on the baby’s back. She asked me to go to the other side of the bed and to kiss her daughter on the back of her head to start her on her journey. Santa did as the mother requested and then laid his teddy bear beside the child. As I was about to leave the room, Santa asked if there was anything else he could do. She asked if I could say a prayer for her child. Now Santa is well prepared and from the mailbag, I took the St. Nicholas Prayer for Children. We offered up the prayer for the child and her parents. Weeks later, I got a call from the hospital with the news that the mother had left an envelope for me. I went and was given the attached photo, slightly altered to protect the privacy of the child. The mother and her baby had gone home and the mother’s message for Santa was that “within an hour of Santa offering the prayer for our daughter, she started to get better. Tell Santa we have gone home.”

It is every Santa’s wish that this child (and the teddy bear) will have a long and happy life together. The work of Santa and his partner Saint Nicholas never ends. Santa Bruce Templeton — Canada

My wife and I were honored to help Briar Creek Commons, an outdoor mall in Raleigh, NC, with their Christmas Tree lighting. Since the event was outdoors, the organizers had hired a horse drawn sleigh for Santa and Mrs. Claus to arrive in. The sleigh was pulled by a beautiful black Percheron horse. I was standing next to the sleigh when three preteen girls came running with mom and a camera. I said “Would you like a picture with Santa?”. “No, we want a picture with the horse!!” was the reply.
