ome of you may remember Lois Lane, Superman’s journalist girlfriend, from days gone by. The Association for Women in Communications (AWC) – Santa Barbara Chapter filled the El Paseo Restaurant to honor two other Loises – Congresswoman Lois Capps and communications consultant Dr. Lois Phillips. The 2016 theme was “Women Stand Up, Speak Out”, which surely fits the recipients who both got their public voice later in life. Lois Capps has been a Congresswoman since 1998, succeeding her late husband, Walter Capps. She had been a school nurse and helped spearhead legislation to address the national nursing shortage, detect and prevent domestic violence against women, curb underage drinking, and more. Dr. Lois Phillips has been in a myriad of communications arenas such as conference speaking, producing and hosting two TV programs about women’s changing rolls, co-hosting an NPR radio show on KCLU about current issues and coaching leaders in their
