Letter to my future self

Dear myself in 2050, Hi, Sang Min. This is 16-year-old Sang Min in 2015. I hope you have managed to open your own pharmacy by now! That is the only thing that motivates me to study hard! Do you remember yourself writing a letter to your future self? Although it is part of my school homework, I believe this letter would be very meaningful to myself now and you in the future. Were not for my English homework, I don’t think I would ever get a chance to write such letter. I’m writing this letter because there are few things that I want you to remind yourself about. I predict that there will be lot of technology developed, and daily lives will be unimaginably fast and convenient in the future. I’m quite sure that my prediction is accurate because that is what we are all working hard for. Whether or not my prediction is accurate, do not forget that you were still happy in 2015 when you did not have all those advanced technology, which you have with you now. We currently do not have any 3D glasses, teleportations, or embedded phones in our body. We only have 2D books at school. We only have buses, taxis and MRTs, and we have to carry our phones by hand. You might find these very slow and frustrating, but they were totally fine to you in 2015. I find them perfectly fine, and I feel convenient enough with those. In addition, you were once even frustrated when you had to repeat yourself to your friends, who were all on their phones. Thus, I want to tell you that there were times where you could go without all the advanced technology. If you cannot agree with me, it’s probably because you are too used to your current life. I’m telling you this because as the technology is improving everyday, I predict that we will be totally or almost dominated by technology, and therefore that everything will be automatic. Remember the short story, There will come soft rains by Ray Bradbury? Its video showed a world operated by computers in total silence. No existence of humans could be found. You may not remember this, but you were very concerned and scared about your future lives after watching the video. The more you rely on the technology, the world shown in the video will get closer to you. Therefore, you should keep in mind how you used to live back in 2015, and try not to solely rely on the technology. As a 51-year-old, old lady, I want you to think that you are living a decent life and to feel grateful for what you have. Do not get obsessed with being ahead of others and becoming the best. Just deal with what you have and enjoy the present moment. I know it is difficult due to the keen competition with even larger population than in 2015. However, I can assure you that being the best will not bring infinite happiness as you think. My last advice to you: don’t forget how sincerely you wrote this letter, and have a think about what I said although it sounds like nonsense.

Love, Sang Min
