Surprise Elements While the purpose of the 2012 Sanford Children’s Gala was a serious one—raising support for children’s health care—throughout the evening guests were treated to fun and surprises that were in keeping with the Gala theme: More Than Meets the Eye. Stilt walking vine characters, an aerialist, Mannequins in Motion and 3-D art imagery provided visual entertainment while guests registered and made their way into the event. As part of the program, America’s Got Talent finalist, Joe Castillo, used sand to create dramatic scenes that helped illustrate the stories of patients at Sanford Children’s. Later, Ethan Bortnick, an 11-year-old musical prodigy, who travels the country performing to raise money for children’s hospitals, used the piano to awe the audience.
