Central District’s breakthrough campaign has been reflected in the 2023 The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year, with five Bulldogs and coach Ben Hunt selected in the elite line-up. It’s hardly surprising Glenelg’s Matthew Allen has starred for SA against WA in the Croweaters’ wins in the past two seasons. Because Allen has had quite a bit of experience representing the State – and playing in big wins. And not just in footy. Allen had a bright future in cricket as he played State under12s, under-15s and under-17s. And he captained SA’s national title-winning under-17 side of 2014. Allen, who booted the winning goal with a stunning, last-gasp shot on the run from 50 metres against Adelaide last week, helped sink the WAFL with 24 possessions in Perth last season and 16 more in this year’s great SA win at Adelaide Oval.
