Men’s Pro/Am National Championship NASSC is honored to feature, as its centerpiece, the 2018 “U.S. OPEN”, pitting elite international and national pro/am beach soccer teams, battling in fierce action in the Beach Stadium, June 8-10. Historically, Pro Beach Soccer held its first “U.S. National Finals” at NASSC 2001 in Virginia Beach to identify the top pro/am beach soccer team in the nation. NASSC transformed those National Finals in to the “U.S. OPEN” in 2003. The current format includes 16 of the most highly qualified teams who applied. Last year’s winner, FC Barcelona, are competing in Europe during NASSC ’18 but Finalist Gobeachsoccer is leading the chase! Of significance, international entries from the Netherlands, Canada, Costa Rica and Colombia should add to the intensity, while members of the USA National team will make their first OPEN appearance under the name RWB Select. Previous OPENS have wowed stadium crowds as competition reaches higher levels every year, consistent with the international growth of the sport, under FIFA and Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW).

Once upon a time, according to ancient mythology, King Neptune, the King of the Sea, ruled for thousands of years until one day he decided to retire. He now stands watch over 31st Street Park in Virginia Beach. Now, the time has come for another great legend to retire - Captain Dick Whalen, the “King of the Sand.” He ruled and reigned for 25 years and he raised thousands upon thousands of sand dollars for his beloved soccer complex (HRSC - Hampton Roads Soccer Complex). The City of Virginia Beach and the entire Hampton Roads Soccer Community owe a huge debt of gratitude for his vision, his service and the legacy that he leaves for all of us. He leaves us in a better place. May the sun, sand, surf and sea and all the players and participants always remember Captain Dick Whalen, as the “King of the Sand.”

I don’t see Dick Whalen as everyone else sees him. To me, he is much more than the guy who created the biggest beach soccer tournament in the world and who has served tirelessly with many others to raise the bar for soccer in the Hampton Roads region…. To me, he is DAD - Saturday mornings in the 1980’s were spent with Dad bribing my brothers and I with Slurpees and tokens to the Arcade if we could beat our highest juggling score….and it usually worked. He is also the guy, along with Mom, of course, who drove us around to practices, games, tournaments, camps (and even more practices) because he knew soccer made us happy…and that made him happy. To me, he is also GRAMPY – the name his 7 grandkids have bestowed upon this big teddy bear of a man who shows up to every game with his choice words for the referees and ginormous camera in hand to capture action shots of his grandkids that could grace the cover of most magazines. My kids know Grampy will always be the first to greet them on the sidelines with a high five and encouraging words. So, as we put on our sunscreen, strap on our sand socks, put on our uniforms, lay out our beach chairs, and cheer on our teams, we all thank you, Dad. Thanks for your passion, determination, and love for the game of soccer.

From the first time I met Dick Whalen, I knew he was a “man with a mission”. No matter what project or challenge he faced, he spared no effort to make sure that his goal was achieved. As President of Beach FC he was committed to making the club a role model organization for the rest of the state. And it was as President of Beach FC that he joined with a select few other visionaries to create the Hampton Roads Soccer Council and thus develop the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex. But it was his vision of creating a funky and unique fundraising event originally called “Beach Soccer Kick-out” that was his most incredible feat. We all thought he was a bit crazy. But as everyone will agree… he proved us all wrong! He always loved to say he made the money so “Karen could spend it”. And he was correct. It was his vision that created the Sand Soccer tournament – and the proceeds have paid for almost all the improvements at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex. Thanks Dick for everything you have given to HRSC!

Dick has a bigger than life personality and can get more done in 5 minutes than it takes most people a week or longer. He cast his soccer net wide and pulled in not only the parents, but all the soccer clubs in the area, city administrators, the military and as many corporations and businesses he could gather in order to create Sand Soccer. This was a huge effort, but he is tireless and relentless when he has a mission. We all wish him well and thank him for his tireless efforts on behalf of Sand Soccer.

sand socc history in virgin er i a bea “With an oceanfront like Virginia Beach, you really ought to try sand soccer!” With this casual 1992 recommendation by an UMBRO USA official to thenBeach FC travel soccer club president, Dick Whalen, the concept of the North American Sand Soccer Championships began. At the time, UMBRO, a sponsor of the club’s annual Columbus Day Tournament, had established an informal amateur “U.S./ Sand Soccer Federation”, concurrent with the creation of the “Professional Beach Soccer Tour” in Europe and South America. During the early 90’s, Virginia Beach soccer clubs had begun searching for additional facilities to serve the rapidly increasing numbers of area soccer participants. In 1992, the “Hampton Roads Soccer Council (HRSC)” formed as a consortium of several Virginia Beach area travel and recreational soccer organizations to raise funds for the development of a new soccer complex and additional tournaments. The first sand soccer event in Virginia Beach occurred in May 1994 when 26 youth and adult teams braved a blustery nor’easter to do battle on six fields in the “Beach Soccer Kickout”. The event, co-sponsored by Beach FC and the Virginia Beach Rotary Club, proved very successful and the good news about sand soccer in Virginia Beach began quickly spreading throughout the soccer community. As Pro Beach Soccer expanded around the world, so did the North American Sand Soccer Championships, with over 1,000 teams competing on 63 fields in 2016. Included in the mix are nearly 20 states and a full range of festival amusements. A weekend player/coach/fan population of 200,000 is associated with NASSC 2018, in addition to boardwalk spectators averaging 50,000 daily. ESPN Magazine covered NASSC 2012.

Local military organizations have become major event supporters in NASSC site construction, providing hundreds of volunteers and teams. A “Professional and Amateur” cash division, added in 1999, has become a tournament highlight, attracting experienced beach soccer athletes who demonstrate the highest skill levels associated with the sport. In 1997, NASSC became the first of the national amateur “grass roots” venues to formally affiliate with the “Pro Beach Soccer Tour”. Pro Beach support expanded in 2001 with an international Pro Beach Soccer exhibition between the national teams of USA and Canada, and an inaugural “U.S. OPEN” in 2001 – the national championship. The world’s first pro/am women’s venue was staged in 2003, involving teams from the USA and Canada and a 16-international team pro/am “footvolley” venue was presented in 2004. Additional beach sports events have subsequently been added, including Beach Tennis USA, the North American Beach Wrestling Championships, Beach Coed Flag Football, the North American SandLAX Championships, Beach “Cornhole”, and Beach Field Hockey. With the February ’05 assumption of beach soccer oversight by FIFA, international interest is increasingly rapidly. Most recently, Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW), the operating arm for FIFA, affiliated with NASSC, offering opportunities for the future. Over 140 corporate sponsors and media partners routinely support NASSC. The festival is honored to be partnered with Ferguson as Title Sponsor.
Organizational changes over the years have included assumption of full hosting responsibilities by the Hampton Roads Soccer Council in 1998, with tournament revenues channeled directly towards

history of beach socc “Over the past two decades, beach soccer has journeyed from the beaches of Brazil to the hearts of millions of fans all over the globe. The participation of internationally renowned players such as the Brazilian Junior Negao, Portugal’s Alan and Madjer and the Spanish star Amarelle has helped to expand television coverage to large audiences in over 170 countries worldwide, making beach soccer one of the fastest growing professional sports in the world and converting it into a major showcase for international commercial opportunity. Beach soccer had been played recreationally all over the world for many years and in many different formats. However, it wasn’t until 1992 that the Laws of the Game were envisioned and a pilot event staged in Los Angeles. The following summer, the first professional beach soccer competition was organized at Miami Beach, with the teams from USA, Brazil, Argentina and Italy taking part in what would turn out to be an historic event.
In April 1994 the first event to be covered by network television transmissions was held on the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro and the city hosted the inaugural Beach Soccer World Championship one year later. The competition was won by the host nation, making Brazil the first ever World Champions of Beach Soccer. The success of the tournament saw international interest begin to match developments on the pitch and growing demand for the sport around the world gave rise to the Pro Beach Soccer Tour in 1996.

The first Pro Beach Soccer Tour included a total of 60 games in two years across South America, Europe, Asia and the USA, attracting major names both on and off the pitch. Interest generated by the tour in Europe led to the creation of the European Pro Beach Soccer League in 1998, providing a solid infrastructure that would increase the professionalism of the spectacle on all levels. The EPBSL, now known as the Euro BS League, united promoters from across the continent and satisfied the demands of the media, sponsors and fans. Only four years on from its creation, the successful first step in the building of a legitimate Worldwide Competition Structure for the sport of Pro Beach Soccer had been taken. The euro BS league flourished, with a nailbiting 2000 season decided in the closing match of the final tournament when Spain beat Portugal in an intense encounter. The next four years would see this growth consolidated by further progress both on and off the pitch, with the Euro BS League emerging as the strongest Pro Beach Soccer competition in the world. By 2004, some 17 nations had entered teams, and by 2005 this had risen to 20, leading to more than seventy countries looking to stage events. 2005 saw beach soccer formally become part of the FIFA family, with “Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW)” partnering with FIFA to spread the sport worldwide and jointly manage the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. However, the following year, at the first edition of the tournament to feature 16 nations, the Auriverde avenged the previous year’s loss, before winning a further three successive world crowns, with the latter two tournaments staged in Marseille and Dubai. The 2011 tournament, held in Ravenna, saw a new name etched on the crown as Russia saw off Brazil in the Final. Russia repeated as champion in 2013 in Tahiti. The biennial Cup in 2015 was won by host Portugal, with the 2017 World Cup played in the Bahamas where Brazil defeated Tahiti 6-0 for their 5th World Cup crown.
