VOICE Maitland Peters, Voice Department Chair The programs of study for voice majors are designed to develop skilled performers in all areas of vocal techniques and to offer opportunities to perform. Students will achieve a high degree of professional competence and learn appropriate stylistic approaches to the vocal literature of various historical periods. In addition to our expert faculty, students are given opportunities to sing for and observe worldrenowned guest artists.

Vaughn, Artistic Director of Opera With one of the foremost opera training programs in the world, MSM attracts some of the most talented young singers from the United States and sixty other countries. Students refine their technique and develop their artistry under the guidance of a faculty of eminent artist-teachers while gaining exposure before New York City audiences through MSM Opera Theater’s two fully produced mainstage operas each year, performances in opera scenes, semi-staged operas, opera workshops, ensembles, and community outreach presentations. 13

CONDUCTING George Manahan, Director of Orchestral Activities Kent Tritle, Director of Choral Activities The conducting program provides specialized training for graduate students who intend to become professional conductors and courses for graduate and undergraduate students who wish to develop the skills and sensitivities required for many musical disciplines. MUSICAL THEATRE Luis Perez, Associate Dean and Chair MSM’s new 4-year Musical Theatre Program provides a full range of training to turn out the next generation of actors, singers, dancers, and artistic leaders. Beginning as freshmen, students will have opportunities to participate in master classes, workshops, and fully produced shows, both on stage and behind the scenes. The program offers 4 years of voice/speech/diction; 4 years of dance, covering ballet, tap, jazz, and other movement styles; and 4 years of acting, including general acting, acting for the camera, and audition preparation. In addition to an emphasis on technique, the program offers courses in musical theatre repertoire and history, drama study and analysis, and technical production training, as well as a core of humanities courses, providing each student with a fully accredited Bachelor’s degree.

ORCHESTRAL PERFORMANCE Glenn Dicterow, Chair The Graduate Program in Orchestral Performance, chaired by Glenn Dicterow, former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, seeks to produce polished musicians of the highest artistic caliber. Students are prepared intensively in the orchestral repertoire for careers as symphonic players by a faculty made up of principal players of major New York orchestras. The advanced curriculum features master classes with principal players from orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as vigorous training in audition preparation.

CONTEMPORARY PERFORMANCE Margaret Kampmeier, Chair and Artistic Director The Graduate Program in Contemporary Performance is dedicated to giving advanced student performers the opportunity to study with expert faculty and to work directly with living composers. The ensemble Tactus presents knowledgeable performances of classic 20th-century repertoire by composers such as Webern, Schoenberg, Ives, Varèse, Cage, and Ligeti, and very recent music played with the composer present, including Jerome Kitzke, Tania Leon, Steve Reich, Charles Wuorinen, and Julia Wolfe.

THE CENTER FOR MUSIC ENTREPRENEURSHIP MSM’s Center for Music Entrepreneurship (CME) gives students the entrepreneurial skills and practical experience they need to succeed in the professional world. The CME offers courses in career development; a series of career workshops in which entrepreneurial speakers share their expertise; and an advising program. Students also gain valuable experience through CME internships and performance referrals, preparing them to take their talent to the world’s stages. MSMNYC.EDU/CME

BARNARD/MSM CROSS-REGISTRATION MSM undergraduates have the opportunity to take academic Humanities classes at Barnard College during their junior and senior years to meet their Humanities elective requirements.
DISTANCE LEARNING Through live videoconference master classes offered by the Distance Learning Program’s Global Conservatory, students can learn from renowned faculty and artists and engage with fellow student musicians around the world. Through Music Bridges, students can expand their skills as teaching artists, presenting applied music instruction over videoconference to K–12 and community-based learners around the world. OUTREACH MSM’s Arts-in-Education program prepares students to be effective artisteducators by offering pedagogical instruction and practical teaching experience in New York City schools. The program reaches more than 2,100 New York City schoolchildren each year. MSM’s Community Engagement program gives students the opportunity to present performances to diverse audiences in New York City, sharing the healing power of music with underserved communities and those who are unable to attend musical performances on their own. Through the Outreach program, students are able to expand their performance techniques for diverse audiences in nontraditional concert settings.

Manhattan School of Music borders RIVERSIDE PARK and SAKURA PARK—two beautiful green spaces—and shares its neighborhood with Columbia University, Barnard College, and Teacher’s College on New York City’s Upper West Side. Andersen Residence Hall, adjoining the school’s 1910 seven-story main building, is a dynamic 19-STORY BUILDING OF PERFORMANCE, ACADEMIC, and RESIDENTIAL SPACES, featuring FIVE STUDENT LOUNGES, a GYM, LAUNDRY facilities, and 24-HOUR SECURITY. CABLE TV and a REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER/ MICROWAVE UNIT are available in each dorm room.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT The Office of Student Engagement creates a wide variety of social, service, and educational activities. Along with the DEAN OF STUDENTS, RESIDENCE LIFE, the CAMPUS HEALTH AND COUNSELING CENTER, and MSM’s CENTER FOR MUSIC ENTREPRENEURSHIP, Student Engagement supports academic endeavors while working to build a sense of community and pride both inside and outside the classroom.
