EATING DISORDERS This unit is about two Eating Disorders, Anorexia and Bulimia. It is important that you know the facts about these physical and phychological diseases so that you become aware of the dangers of an umbalanced diet in one’s life. In this unit you are expected to:  Define Anorexia and Bulimia;

 Identify the possible causes and consequences of these ilnesses;  Distinguish between a healthy and an unhealhy diet.


EATING DISORDERS This previous information will give you input to understand and develop your extensive reading around this theme. In the

end you are expected to read “Diary of an Anorexic� and do some comprehension

exercises on it, showing a deep

understanding on this issue.

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by extremely low body weight, distorted body image and an obsessive fear of gaining weight.  Anorexia nervosa affects especially teenagers from 13 to 25 years old).  It affects especially girls (95% ).  It is a physical and psychological disease.



Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors. The most common form is defensive vomiting, sometimes called purging; the use of laxatives and diuretics. Over exercising is also common.



POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR THESE BEHAVIOURS:

SOCIAL PRESSURE; NEED TO FIT IN A GROUP;  BULLYING ; INSECURITY.

FEEL WELL IN YOUR OWN BODY! BONES AREN’T BEAUTIFUL! When a model scout told 14 year old Crystal Renn, that one day she could be in Vogue, little did he know that the Florida native would indeed rock the pages of American, Italian and French Vogue in her own uncompromising style. That model scout suggested that Crystal re-sized her body and lost almost half of the weight she had at the time in order to fit the editorial ideal but it is by staying true to her natural body type that made her a sensation.


Crystal broke editorial barriers after transcending the eating disorder that almost derailed her career and now she is a famous super model in the most important magazines of the world.


She became a plus size model and her beautiful curves are admired by the most famous fashion designers in the world and envied by the skinny top models. Accept your body and love it, as she did!
