What was the plan behind this kitchen design? We were fortunate here to be able to develop such an ample kitchen. The owners love to cook and enjoy the company of their guests while doing so, and they insisted on an open floor plan that continues into the family room. But the breakfast area behind the partial wall is a more private space that overlooks the horse fields and stables outside. It is meant for drinking coffee and reading the paper. Was there a certain aesthetic you were going for? I wanted the kitchen, like the whole house, to have an enduring, timeless feel, yet there is also a feeling of freshness from the white cabinetry and ceilings when matched against the beautiful Frenchoak floors. The subway tile is glazed Grove Brickworks by Waterworks and is very rustic and warm, and the dark grout adds contrast. I adore the tile and insisted to my clients that it would add the charm and sophistication of an old-world kitchen but with the freshness of today. That ladder though. The client collects terrines and uses them when serving, and the upper cabinets were the perfect place to store them. The ladder is really for practical purposes, so she can access them when she needs them. Of course, the charm of it is immeasurable.
