Creating a residential environment that ensures the well-being of its inhabitants, as well as the surrounding natural world, is increasingly the motivation behind renovation projects. For interior designer Tanya Shively, bringing this concept to fruition has been a joy. The principal designer and owner of Sesshu Design Associates has made the creation of beautiful, healthy homes her life’s mission. “Being a green designer has been a driving focus for me since I began my firm in 2005,” she says. “Growing up, I watched my father suffer from severe asthma. Indoor air quality was a big deal in our home. As I started my design career, it became my intention to help other families lessen the impact from the side effects building materials had on their lives.”

Illuminating innovations. “I love the creative designs being introduced with the advent of LED lighting,” Shively says. “You no longer need a bulb and socket, and lighting designers are fully taking advantage of the capabilities with stunning sculptural fixtures.” Industry insights. Remodeling or building a home can be a stressful and overwhelming endeavor. To help homeowners navigate the process, Shively wrote How to Avoid Interior Design Nightmares. “My book will help any homeowner find the ideal team and guide them from beginning to end,” she says.
