letter from the

PRESIDENT

O

n behalf of the players, members, and board of directors, I welcome you and your guests to the San Diego Polo Club’s 29th season here in beautiful Rancho Santa Fe. We are lucky to be living in such a lovely environment in the heart of San Diego’s equestrian community, and playing an exciting sport in front of a great group of fans and supporters. We are excited to introduce you to many new players on the fields this year, as well as our returning players and pros. You will see many changes in our staff. SDPC is pleased to announce the hiring of our new Polo Manager, Ashton Wolf, who brings many years playing on our fields and managing barns and polo teams in Eldorado, Santa Barbara, and here in San Diego. Also, please welcome our new Event Director, Stacy Egusa, who will be handling Sunday Polo and our private events. Lindsey Chronert, our Director of Marketing & Club Development, is back—and we couldn’t be more pleased to have her with us. Topo Mendez rounds out our team as our new and very enthusiastic polo school instructor. The staff has been hard at work planning to bring you a fun and memorable season with lots of activities as well as great polo. This year the polo club has teamed up with some amazing sponsors and non-profit organizations including BrownForman, BuzzBox, Korbel, South Coast Plaza, Wounded Warrior Homes, and Voices for Children who bring us not only increased awareness about our sport, but raise funds for deserving local charities. I encourage you to attend a few of our charity events this season! Please join our polo family here at the San Diego Polo Club, where summer is meant to be spent. I look forward to seeing you on the field! Sincerely,

Dear Polo Enthusiasts, On behalf of the Pacific Coast Circuit of the United States Polo Association, the largest of the 13 circuits making up the USPA with 33 clubs and 675 members, I would like to congratulate the San Diego Polo Club on the inauguration of its 29th polo season in Rancho Santa Fe and the 109th year of the existence of the club in the San Diego area. The San Diego Polo Club has always been a mainstay of exciting polo in the Southern California area and we look forward to their continuing success in providing a venue for polo players and fans. I would also like to salute Ashton Wolf on his appointment as the new polo manager for SDPC. He has “big shoes” to fill in taking the place of Graham Bray who successfully managed the club for several years. Ashton has been instrumental in bringing several new polo players to SDPC competing in the club’s 4-goal and 8-goal tournaments. Also new to the SDPC is the outstanding Argentine polo player, Santiago “Topo” Mendez, who is bringing a wealth of experience as a player and a coach to the SDPC’s polo school. The polo school has been the entry point for numerous new players into the sport of polo who have gone on to compete in tournaments both nationally and internationally. I must compliment Lindsey Chronert, Director of Marketing and Club Development at the SDPC for her outstanding work in promoting polo, creating marketing partnerships and developing an outstanding Sunday polo program that attracts fans far and wide to watch and cheer on their favorite teams every weekend. San Diego Polo Club has joined with other Southern California polo clubs such as the Orange County Polo Club, Poway Polo Club, Celebrity Ranch Polo Club and Lakeside Polo Club in developing programs and events to further the growth of polo in this important region of our Circuit. Again, congratulations to San Diego Polo Club for providing 29 seasons of outstanding polo competition at the Rancho Santa Fe location and look forward to many more years of its leadership in the polo community. See you on the field,

Pat Nesbitt

Celebrates 125th Anniversary with beach Polo

W

hen sugar magnate John D. Spreckels built the polo grounds on Coronado, overlooking the gorgeous blue seas and North Island, he intended it to attract the very best people. And sure enough, from 1906 to the early 1930s, the hammering of hooves and smack of mallets drew crowds of top-tier elites to the newly-burgeoning island for a rousing game. Hollywood and social elite made the fields a regular stop: Charlie Chaplin was a frequent visitor, as was socialite Wallis Simpson, the future wife of England’s King Edward VIII, who was so taken by her beauty he abdicated his throne to marry her. Other attendees arrived dressed to the nines—ladies in long dresses and gentlemen in three-piece suits—who would take in a chukker in the stands or from their cars, pulled right up to the edge of the field.

“If you had dropped in on the polo grounds, you would have seen upper-crust people from that age, very active matches and activity, generally focused on the weekends,” explains Bruce Linder, Executive Director of the Coronado Historical Association. “From the teens to the late 1920s, San Diego and Coronado was a destination for people coming down from Hollywood.” The Coronado Polo Club became known as the “Meadowbrook of the West”, after the famous club on Long Island New York. Coronado was the site of many early prestigious polo tournaments, and its fields saw the first playing of the Pacific Coast Open, still considered one of California’s premier polo events. Among those tournaments was the match that Spreckels inaugurated in 1909. Calling it the Polo Challenge, he enlisted the aid of designers Brock and Feagus of Los Angeles, and commissioned a dramatic silver trophy almost two feet high. Engraved on the trophy was the inscription, “Polo Challenge Trophy, presented by John D. Spreckels.” The trophy was designed to be engraved with the names of the winners each year and was intended to be held by the winning team for one year. The trophy was played for each year, with the exception of the years of World War I, and its engraved names read like a “Who’s Who” of California polo. The last team to win the trophy before it was retired in 1921, was captained by Carleton F. Burke. Burke, a dedicated horseman, was responsible for reintroducing thoroughbred racing in California in 1932, after a 23-year blackout. He later became one of the founders of the California Horse Racing Board. The Spreckels Cup remained among his most prized treasures. Today, the San Diego Polo Club has resurrected the Spreckels Cup, holding a tournament annually to celebrate the rich connection between the area’s polo past on Coronado and its future on 80 acres in Rancho Santa Fe. The original glowing silver cup is still used today.

36

And this year, 125 years after Coronado was founded, the very best will again flock to Coronado for polo. “The Historic Polo at the Hotel Del weekend, set for October 9-11, is a marquee event for this year’s 125th anniversary celebrations on Coronado,” says organizer Heidi Wilson, chairwoman of the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission. The event is also backed by the U.S. Polo Association, which is coincidentally celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2015 as well.

Charlie Chaplin with Horse.

Until not long ago, Wilson, who lives in Coronado, says she had no idea polo was ever played on Coronado. She says the idea came up after local resident and mother of a polo player, Julie Reuf, pitched it as a commemorative event. “I asked: Polo with horses?” Wilson says. “On the beach? Yeah. In Coronado? Yeah. I went home and started Google searching and it was a really big deal.” Spreckels, who owned steam boats to ship sugar to the west coast from Hawaii, imported polo ponies and players on those ships as well, says Wilson. “In the early 1900s, through the 1920s, Coronado was really the epicenter for polo,” she says. “It’s kind of amazing that a tiny little place like Coronado could be so big.”

Games will be played on the beach, with plans to have a Hawaiian team join the lineup, denoting how the sport arrived in Coronado, Wilson says. With two major matches, a parade of ponies, and the Village at the Del with fashion and booths, the weekend will provide the same kind of elegant scene as those more than 100 years ago enjoyed. There will be a Saturday night luau at the Hotel Del, promising barefoot elegance on the beach, and a Sunday fancy-dress champagne brunch where ladies can don their heels and elaborate hats. Wilson says it’s the kind of thing that hasn’t happened for almost 100 years—and probably won’t again for another 100. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience to see the grandeur of the Pacific Ocean, the beauty of Coronado, beach polo and Southern California weather at its best.” With the high-quality play, the sparkling company and dazzling events, it’s a weekend that any Southern California polo enthusiast would be mistaken to miss. “From the luxury branding standpoint, you have Coronado, the Hotel Del and polo,” she says. “It’s the trifecta of luxury branding coming together in one event. It’s going to be amazing.” CORONADOBEACHPOLO.COM

Youth Polo

ZONE 3 of the united states polo association National Youth Tournament Series Polo is a lifestyle—and the talented young members of the National Youth Tournament Series championship team have got it in their blood. In 2013, the United States Polo Association created a national tournament series to provide more opportunities for junior players to compete outdoors with and against their peers at a local and national level. The Zone 3 team from Wellington, Florida claimed the USPA National Youth Tournament Series National Championship last August here at the San Diego Polo Club, and have been galloping away with titles and trophies since. The team—Grant Ganzi, Wesley Finlayson, Juan Bollini and Christian Weisz— have traveled all over the country and world, claiming the 20 goal Herbie Pennell Cup in January 2015. The team has excelled under the guidance of Grant’s mother, Melissa Ganzi, who this year was presented the Polo Training Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year award. San Diego Polo Magazine spoke with the boys to learn about what makes them the ones to watch.

What is your favorite thing about polo?

What has been your favorite moment in polo?

FINLAYSON: The thing I love most about polo is the connection I have between my horses and the people around me. I enjoy being able to ride every day and get jobs in other places to play. Being able to travel around the country and play polo is a great feeling.

FINLAYSON: My favorite moment in polo has been winning the $50,000 12 goal here in Wellington. It was a fun tournament to play with my friends Juancito Bollini and Grant Ganzi and win as well.

GANZI: I love the speed, competitiveness, adrenaline, horses and uniqueness that makes polo the best sport in the world.

GANZI: My favorite moment in polo was winning my first high goal final at International Polo Club Palm Beach on the main stadium field. It was the Herbie Pennell Cup.

BOLLINI: The adrenaline, the lifestyle, and the horses.

BOLLINI: Winning the Herbie Pennell 20 goal.

WEISZ: The thrill, the action, the speed and being able to connect with your horses. When you are on top of the horse, you and the horse are connected as one.

how to watch Whether it’s your first polo match or you’re a seasoned fan, the rules of the game can sometimes be confusing. We want you to enjoy every action-packed minute of play, so we’ve put together this guide on how to watch. With these simple terms and rule explanations, you’ll be a polo aficionado in no time. Game on!

T

he object of the game is to hit the ball between the uprights (goal posts) at opposite ends of the field. By doing so a goal is scored. A goal is worth one point and the team with the most goals at the end of the match is the winner. Matches normally consist of either four or six, 7 ½ minute periods. A period is called a chukker. There is a four minute break between each chukker and a 10 minute break at half time for the players to change horses. The rules of polo are complex and designed primarily for the safety of the players and their horses. They also afford players the opportunity to create strategic plays and in essence out-smart their opponent. The primary rule is that play follows the line of the ball. Once a ball is hit, the player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the right of way. Opposing players cannot cross the line too closely to the player who has the right of way, nor can they approach the “on line” player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty.

2 0 1 5 | S A NDI E G OPOLO.COM 45

Handicaps All players are awarded a handicap by the United States Polo Association (USPA). Polo handicaps range from -2 goals to 10 goals and are based on a comparison scale with other players of similar skills and abilities. A -2 goal player would be a beginner and a 10-goal player would be among one of the very best players in the world. It is difficult to attain a 10-goal handicap and there are less than a dozen players worldwide with that ranking. Polo tournaments and leagues are handicapped in order to make the matches as fair and competitive as possible. The sum of a team’s handicaps are always equal.

Positions on the Field There are four players per team and their positions correspond with the numbers on their jersey. The Number One Player is an offensive role and he is responsible for neutralizing the opposing team’s defense. The Number Two Player is both offensive and defensive and his primary job is to defend and neutralize the Number Three Player on the opposing side. The Number Three Player functions similarly to a quarterback and he is normally the strongest player on the team. His main objective is to set up offensive plays while at the same time, breaking down the offense of the opposing team. The Number Four Player is defense and must be able to execute strong back shots from both sides of the horse. Players will often interchange positions throughout the match.

Defensive Plays Polo is a contact sport, and one of the best defensive tools a player has is his horse. The ride-off or bump is when a player uses their horse to push their opponent off the play or keep them away from the ball. A player may only bump their opponent if they are traveling in the same direction and at the same speed as their opponent, and they must make contact saddle to saddle at less than a 45 degree angle. 46

Fouls A foul occurs when a player commits an infringement of the rules, whether accidental or intentional. Most fouls occur when a player crosses the line of the ball, makes a play on the ball when not having the right of way, or makes a play that the umpire deems dangerous. When the umpire blows the whistle, play immediately ceases and the time clock stops. The severity of the foul depends on how dangerous the infraction was to the horse or player.

Penalties A penalty shot is awarded when a foul is committed. Each foul is given a rating between one and nine by the umpires. The severity of the infraction, whether the foul was committed by the offense or the defense, and the intent, all determine the level of penalty imposed. There are five different penalty shots that may be awarded to the team that the foul was committed against, and they can be taken from various points on the field.

Throw-in Play begins, or is resumed, when the umpire throws the ball into play. For a throw-in, teams line up at center field in positions one through four, facing the umpire. The start of each chukker begins with a center-field throw-in and after each goal is scored, the teams line up again.

Umpires There are three officials for each match and they are responsible for ensuring safety and enforcing the rules of play. The two mounted officials are the umpires and the 3rd official is the referee. If the two mounted umpires ever disagree on a foul or the penalty number to be awarded, the decision is given to the referee who views the match from the center-field sideline. 48

MEL KURTULUS I love the bond between the player and the horse. I think that is an amazing feeling. I also love the polo community: the friendship, sportsmanship, competition, and the energy on the field is addictive.

stephan goss diego cossio My father played polo and I grew up riding in Tucuman, Argentina.

I just decided I wanted to give polo a shot. A friend of mine introduced me to Nour-Dean who recommended I go to Mexico for practice as the season hadn’t started yet. I flew to Careyes where they put me on a horse, told me not to fall off and put me in a game. It was awesome.

nicole deburg A friend of mine talked me into trying a complimentary lesson at the San Diego Polo Club and I have been totally hooked ever since I hit my first ball there.

nour-dean anakar I did not know any thing about Polo until I was sent to work and live in Argentina as managing director of a British hospitality and gaming company in 1985, and through my work there, one of my first employees Pablo Llorente in Buenos Aires, who was the president of the Argentina Polo Players Association, introduced me to the sport and arranged for me to take lessons and start playing with Alfonso and Gonzalo Pieres- two of the top 10 goal players at that time.

Q: How did you get into polo?

I was a true cowgirl back in the day. I grew up riding Western barrels and poles in New Mexico with my Mom who had earned the title “Rodeo Queen” in New Mexico. We shared a retired cutting horse named “Old Red” that my Mom got for free (or close to nothing). “Old Red” was a whopping 21 years old when I started riding him. Red was my best friend growing up and I remember how he kept me grounded during some the most difficult times of my life. When my daughter was struggling through her teen years, I decided we needed to spend some mother/daughter time together participating in an equestrian activity, just as I had growing up. We tried polo and, of course, I got hooked and have never looked back! I always said after I was done raising my 3 children I would get horses again, because horses are good for the soul. Zen Lifestyle & Fashion Blogger TV Personality | Zen Fashionista Pictured with Holly & Tortuga

ashton wolf I was raised in Santa Ynez Valley in a family with a passion for horses and have loved horses (and pretty much all livestock) since I was a child. My grandfather raised racehorses and his passion inspired my parents to dabble in it as well. Admiring the love and dedication it took to raise and ride horses, it wasn’t long before I too was hooked. It was through a close family friendship with The Whites, sponsor s of the Casablanca polo team, that I became involved with polo. Initially I was brought on as a groom where Ronai and Carlos Galindo taught me the skills and work ethic necessary to become an accomplished horseman and pro. My passion for horses and polo matured and my career led me to manage Steve Crowder’s barn, where I learned the entrepreneurial side of polo. Today I reside in San Diego with my wife and children, who seem to have also inherited the love of horses and have started playing peewee polo. The passion for horses and polo continues to drive me to further my career and refine my skills.

Roberto Estudillo Esquivel Roberto’s maternal and paternal heritage comes from prominent ancestry. The Estudillo family was one of the first European settlers in southern California and have lived in this land for over 200 years, from when it was the territory of New Spain, then Mexico and today the United States. They lived in Casa de Estudillo, considered the finest house in Mexican California; it is located in Old Town San Diego and is now a Museum and National Historic Landmark. His maternal lineage comes from Yucatan, where the family was well known in the region for their cultivation of the Henequen plant. His maternal grandfather was a very distinguished, award-winning Civil Engineer and served as Governor of Baja California. Roberto studied law and is a licensed attorney. His professions are entrepreneur, merchant, and real estate developer. He also studied Polynesian martial arts in the style of Lima Lama. He was introduced to polo by his brotherin-law Fernando Gutierrez Barron. His polo career started in Rosarito, Baja California, where they played polo at Rancho San Fernando. This is the reason Roberto’s team name is San Fernando. He currently owns over 20 polo ponies distributed amongst San Diego, Mexico City, and Rosarito. He has been a member of the San Diego Polo Club for over 15 years, one of the few members to have continuously played during that time. Roberto sees polo like life: beautiful, exciting, and no matter how many chukkers you play, it’s never enough! His philosophy on life is simple: We are all here for a purpose, we each have a mission to fulfill; we must find it, accomplish it, and when we leave this world we will have made it a better place.

cyrus moinzadeh I’ve been riding horses since the age of 12. For the past 14 years, I have been riding and jumping across the street at the showpark until three years ago when I came out for my first lesson. I pulled the trigger and never looked back!

ot so long ago, a horseman (or woman) who wanted a little adventure needed only to saddle up and gallop across the border. Today, it takes a bit more planning—but involves a lot more luxury touches. Just a short skip from Southern California, polo is ascending on the West Coast of Mexico, from an already world-class club south of Puerto Vallarta, to an upcoming destination spot settled smack dab in Baja’s burgeoning wine country. Bring your ponies along for the ride, or borrow some of their tournament-ready horses—either way, there’s plenty of polo, surf and even a little high-class relaxation ahead.

Destination: Todos Santos Polo Club Nothing follows a sunny day of polo better than a gorgeous glass of wine. Enter Todos Santos Polo Club, which has scheduled a grand opening for this fall and promises to be an oenophile rider’s dream. Situated among eight of the top Valle de Guadalupe wineries, owner Saul Flores Gurrero calls this Baja spot a true Mexican Napa Valley. In fact, each goal post inside the club’s covered, fenced 180-yard arena faces a winery. Located on a former olive orchard, the site still has some 600 trees. Flores Gurrero says that ultimately the spot will have 24 hotel rooms, a restaurant and 60 stables. With the grand opening set for September 8, he says the field and about 25 stables will be available, with nearby hotels, golf, restaurants, and wineries a short ride away. The opening will feature an international tournament, with two teams from the United States, one from Mexico and another from South America expected to participate. With an ocean breeze in the afternoons, the club’s slightly inland location stays temperate. Todos Santos is designed for daytime games followed by casual rides to wineries nearby—tennis shoes welcome. From Southern California, the Todos Santos club will prove to be a perfect mini-getaway. “It’s a reasonable drive, you can come here and spend a weekend,” Flores Gurrero says. “You play polo all weekend long, do a little golf, a little fishing and a lot of wine tasting. For tourists coming here from San Diego, it’s going to be a unique experience.”

After a day of play and a post-game ride to the beach, players and their families can choose from one of the resort’s five on-site restaurants, featuring Asian-Fusion, Italian, Mediterranean, vegetarian and a steakhouse. Or, lock down a private villa or ultra-swank castle and experience a private chef, butler and other personal staff with multiple rooms, a private infinity pool, unparalleled views of the sea. in loving memory

RUSS SHELDON A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, Rodeo Supporter and Polo Angel. One of seven children, Russ Sheldon was born into a family that was passionate about horses and riding. He seemed more comfortable on four legs than on his own two. Russ always found a way to incorporate horses and riding into his life. As a child, he delivered the local newspaper to the cottages on Lake Michigan on his Shetland Pony. In later years he was an active member of the Sheriff’s Posse in Michigan, and also participated in competitive trail rides. Russ was born in Port Huron, Michigan, and became a Civil Engineer in the family business, Blue Water Aggregates, after graduating from Michigan State University. In 1961, Russ married Carolyn “Charlie” Klein and together they had three children, Sherry, Billy and Michael. In the early years of their marriage, they lived in an old farmhouse where riding became an essential part of their daily lives. On Sundays after church, Russ would meet up with his siblings to go trail riding with their kids. In the late 60’s Russ discovered broomstick polo in Michigan with the help of Merle Jenkins. In 1972, he left the family business to take a job on west coast. Russ took up residence with his family in Poway, CA, where their “string” began with three horses and a foal. It didn’t take Russ long to get involved in the local community. The first thing the family did was join the Poway Valley Riders Association. That same year he became a Founding Member of the Poway Rodeo and was a permanent fixture on the Poway Rodeo Committee for over 43 years. Throughout his years of service, Russ has been elected Chairman of the Poway Rodeo five times.

97

Four Generations: Billy Sheldon, Charles Sheldon, Jared Sheldon, Russ, Sheldon.

In the late 70’s Russ once again discovered a new way to enjoy his horses. He met some people from Ramona and Valley Center, CA and they introduced him to Cowboy Polo. Russ was hooked. He started to play Cowboy Polo and travelled around the Western U.S. to compete in tournaments. Russ served the National Cowboy Arena Polo Association as past President, Secretary and Treasurer.

to retire from work. He continued to give his time generously to the Poway Rodeo, and focused on building even more interest in arena polo. In the last few years, Russ managed 4 Interscholastic polo teams based out of Poway that competed at the national level. The Poway Interscholastic team won the National Interscholastic Championship title twice and were also runners-up to the title three times.

In 1989, Russ decided to try Arena Polo and went to the San Diego Polo Club for a free introductory lesson. After frustrating the instructor by not listening, he was handed off to Vicky Owens. Vicky and husband Bob were instrumental in starting the Sheldon family in arena and grass polo.

Since that first introduction to polo, Russ has dedicated countless hours to the sport. His passion and excitement for polo was contagious. Russ passed his love for polo and the rodeo along to his surviving family, Sherry and Brent Gibson, Billy and Sandy Sheldon and Michael and Mary Sheldon; and to his grandchildren, Shane and Danika Rice, Jared and Danielle Sheldon, Breanna and Austin Finch, Zach, Adam and Patrick Sheldon, Michael and Dylan Courtney; and great grandson Charles Sheldon.

“Vicky took us ‘cowboys’ into her fold and every weekend was spent playing polo at her ranch or at a tournament,” said Sherry Sheldon. “When our family would go to a tournament, there would be 3 rigs, 20 horses and 3 generations of Sheldon players. My mom, Charlie, was the greatest supporter for all of us on the sidelines, always cheering like crazy for us.” Even a bout with colon cancer in 1997 wasn’t enough to slow down Russ’ passion for riding, instruction, and the sport of polo. Through radiation treatments he continued to climb faithfully on the back of his favorite horse Quincy each week and participate in chukkers. Preceded in death by Charlie in 2007, Russ made the decision 98

Sherry reached a 2-goal arena polo handicap, and successfully founded Polodeo Ranch, a lesson and training business based out of Poway. She currently works the rodeo circuit and was a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Timer three times. Billy has won 4 USPA Arena Open titles and was elected to the US team in the 1998 FIP World championships, and most recently coached the Poway Interscholastic polo team to the quarter-final round of the National Tournament. He currently has

a handicap of 7-goals in the arena and 2-goals outdoors. Michael grew up with horses and excelled and was recognized with many achievements in Cowboy Polo. He became a 1 goal arena player, but ultimately settled his focus in the computer industry. Russ’ grandchildren also share his passion for horses and polo. Both Shane (in 2002) and Jared (in 2005) have been awarded Interscholastic Player of the Year, while Danika was recognized as the Intercollegiate Woman Player of the Year in 2006. Shane and Jared have both established successful careers as professional polo players, playing up to 20 goal polo on both coasts of the U.S. Danika has become a notable instructor and trainer based in Sealy, Texas. Each of the other grand kids, cousins, nieces, nephews and family have all spent time riding, learning the sports of polo and rodeo, and enjoying family connection through passion for horses.

In Loving Memory “Quite simply, Briant was the kindest person I ever knew. I teased Briant for years that he was the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz: the character searching for, and life lead by, his heart. In the end of the story when Oz gives him his heart, he says to the Tin Man, “Remember my friend, that a heart is not measured by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” I can tell you from my heart- Briant Howes was dearly, dearly loved by all who knew him.” - Tracee Brunetti

Giving Back:

There’s more than one way to pony up on San Diego Polo Club’s lush playing fields.

S

ince its founding in 1986, the club’s passionate and caring polo players have maintained a rich tradition of giving back, raising millions for more than 80 local nonprofits during sponsored matches and other giving programs. And San Diego’s Voices for Children has found that just one night under the Rancho Santa Fe stars can net more than seven figures to benefit the area’s thousands of foster children. Last September, Voices for Children raised a record $1.35 million during its Starry Starry Night fundraiser, where stars and luminaries glittered at the luxe affair under the club’s white-topped canopies. The evening featured a cocktail hour, a live auction and gourmet dinner. The event proved so popular that leaders are hosting the event here again this year. “Voices for Children is delighted to again hold our major annual fundraiser, Starry Starry Night, at the San Diego Polo Club,” said Stephanie Bergsma, who is co-chairing the event with her husband, Dwight Hare. “The polo field is an incomparable canvas upon which we will create our gorgeous theme ‘When You Wish Upon a Star.’”

Among the hot auction items last year were: VIP Paul McCartney concert tickets, a Viking Cruise, tropical vacation packages to destinations including Kauai and Cabo San Lucas, and deluxe dinner events at Pamplemousse Grille. Organizers say this year will feature even more fantastic options. All funds will support Voices for Children’s mission to recruit, train and supervise volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), which provide legal advocacy to more than 2,500 foster children in San Diego County. “As a result (of the fundraiser), hundreds of children will receive a CASA—someone to stand by them during a very scary and traumatic time—who also will ensure that the judge knows their individual needs,” said Voices for Children President/ CEO Sharon Lawrence after last year’s gala. “I am humbled and grateful for the community’s generosity.” SPEAKUPNOW.ORG
