Publisher’s Letter

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours! We are thankful everyday for our family and friends, for good health and for a wonderful life. Thanksgiving time brings this to mind again. San Diego Family is grateful for our advertisers and our readers in San Diego County. Some advertisers like the San Diego Zoo, Birch Aquarium, Helen Woodward Animal Center, Fleet Science Center, San Diego Junior Theatre and several more have been with us for many of our 33 years. And some have joined our team along the way. We like helping them build their businesses while they help us connect with our readers. As for our readers, some of you have parents who read San Diego Family when you were a child. If you joined our readership since your children were born, we are happy to continue providing you resources. We thank you and are greatly appreciative for all of you. A BIG thank you to: • The U.S. military for keeping our country safe. We appreciate the service of the men and women in all branches and military families who sacrifice a great deal when a spouse is deployed.

Visit SanDiegoFamily .com/things-to-do/ donations-volunteersand-fundraisers/1865 for 13 ways to volunteer with your family this Thanksgiving.

• The San Diego County police and sheriff’s departments for protecting us in our neighborhoods. • The firemen who not only help protect our homes and health, but are there if we have fires in our back country and canyons. San Diego Family has a great staff who performs magic every month through sales and editorial. It all comes together beautifully to provide the best. Another big thanks to all of you. sharon@sandiegofamily.com

Local Student Helps Animals Get Back on their Feet

Creature Comfort and Care, a local nonprofit

organization founded by 16-year-old Nikita Krishnan, designs and provides custom prosthetic and assistive devices for injured or disabled animals. These devices are created using 3D printer technology and offered free of charge. Krishnan, an animal lover who attends The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, holds a particular affinity for dogs and horses. She describes her initial motivation to form her organization, “In 2009, I traveled to India to visit my relatives and while on my trip, I saw a multitude of stray, three-legged dogs.” She was dismayed and moved by their plight, having never before seen dogs in this condition. “I wanted to do something to help,” she says. When Krishnan returned home, she began volunteering with animals, doing jobs such as pet sitting, cleaning and walking dogs. She also spent time thinking about how she could further aid them. She learned that animals can either be born with, or develop, pressing medical issues that require prosthetics, but the cost can be prohibitive to owners. As a result, animals often need to simply live with their condition. After reading an online article about 3D printing, Krishnan discovered ways the technology is being used to create inexpensive prosthetics for humans.

18 • SanDiegofamily.com • November 2016

Lisa Pawlak She researched printing materials and found that a biodegradable thermoplastic based from cornstarch could be used to help animals for this purpose. Eventually, she convinced her parents to invest in a 3D printer. Krishnan encountered a number of obstacles after establishing Creature Comfort and Care’s nonprofit status in November 2015. “My first and most obvious obstacle was how to use the Computer Aided Design (CAD) software necessary for 3D printing,” she says. “The volunteers at the La Jolla Library showed me how to use the software. With practice, I developed a deeper understanding of how to design and print files.” Krishnan particularly credits library volunteer Jim Bixby for his assistance; Bixby is now a fellow advisory board member. Despite Krishnan’s willingness and ability to donate services and materials at no cost, months went by before she found any projects, “My second obstacle was finding an organization that was willing to work with me. Perhaps it was my age or liability issues that precluded me from spreading my work.” In time, Krishnan had a couple of important collaborative breakthroughs. First, she partnered with the Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista. “I worked with a Cooper’s hawk, Lady, to design a boot for a non-functioning claw.” She also began working with the Greyhound Adoption Center (GAC) in El Cajon. “Darren Rigg, founder, was very open to my idea, which I will always be grateful for,” she says. “I designed splints for their greyhounds.” Greyhounds commonly experience

Hannah, 4th grade: Hannah is focused and diligent. She’s thriving in her mixed-age class and I often catch her taking notes on other students’ lessons. She loves to learn and works hard to integrate new information into her writing and other studies. Socially, she helps the younger students understand fair play and sportsmanship. Hannah is an amazing young lady. Here’s what her mother says about her first months at RVA: “Finally there is a school that understands my child’s desire to engage in deeper levels of learning. At RVA Hannah is celebrated as a unique thinker, not just a student number on an assignment. She thrives on the attention from teachers who ask the questions that foster creativity and expression while building solid foundations especially in math and writing. At the end of the school day, she does not want to leave. Through playing educational games, teamwork gardening, ample art sessions, and encouraged curiosity about the world, learning is fun again for my child.”

Katya, 5th grade: Katya is mature beyond her years. She is a peace-maker and a smoother of waters. If another person needs help – with school work, carrying something, emotionally – she steps right up without hesitation. Katya makes RVA a better place to be. Here’s what her mother says: “Katya is happy to go to school now. At her public school she felt lost in the crowd. RVA’s small classes give her the attention she needs. She’s made some good friends, but most important, she’s confident that she can learn. She’s willing to try new things.”

injuries during their racing careers, sometimes resulting in retirement. Krishnan explains how rewarding the work can be, particularly the case of one greyhound, Leah. “Leah had suffered a broken hind leg; the splints the organization used weighed about 11 ounces. Mine only weighed 3½ ounces, 25 percent of what the previous splint weighed. The healing process for Leah

was expedited, and because she was a success, I will be designing a splint series for all the other greyhounds with this issue since it is a common one. “I am now working with many individual dog owners, and have plans of getting projects started with the San Diego Zoo,” Krishnan adds. Krishnan spends about 3–4 hours each week focused on her organization, balancing this work with school, piano, sports and time with friends. When asked about future plans, she says, “I have not thought much about my future career. However, doing my nonprofit work has made me think about engineering and other STEM-related fields.” Krishnan encourages all young people to experience the wonders of 3D printing and discover its many applications. She is grateful to the community volunteers who have helped along the way, and also to her father for driving her places and helping with hardware installation on the splints. Finally, she appreciates all donors who fund essential project materials, such as filament and hardware. A perspective of gratitude is one of the greatest gifts we can offer children. Gratitude gives children a more thankful attitude as they move through life, improving overall happiness and well-being into adolescence and adulthood. Encouraging gratitude in kids isn’t difficult. Here are some easy strategies to try with your family:

1.

Make gratitude a family affair. Children learn by imitation and are more likely to learn from what they see parents do, rather than what they tell them. Incorporate gratitude into your daily routine as a family. Tell your

children what you’re thankful for as you drive them to school in the morning or tuck them into bed at night. They will naturally follow suit. Moments like these become opportunities for connection and conversation and help to encourage a daily practice of being thankful. Don’t force the issue if they are not immediately interested. Just continue articulating your own gratitude; you will still be demonstrating an important idea that they will absorb over time.

2.

Make gratitude tangible. Make gratitude a more concrete concept by making a “Happy Jar.” As a family, write down on a piece of paper what made each person feel happy that day. Fold the papers up and drop them into the jar. Take them out and share them at the end of a week, month or year, as a way to remember all the pleasurable moments that were experienced over time. Other ideas include reading children’s books that foster gratitude, or creating a gratitude journal together.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2016 LAKESIDE RODEO GROUNDS

3.

Make gratitude simple. It’s helpful to remind kids that we can be grateful for the simplest things in life. Point out a particularly sunny day, a delicious strawberry or a good grade at school. The act of noticing small pleasures in life can help cultivate joy. Teach children not to take important blessings like running water, food and health for granted. Although we want to express gratitude for “big” moments like trips to Disneyland or a special birthday party, a meaningful gratitude practice comes from paying attention to the beauty in ordinary moments.

We are Moving!

It can be challenging to learn concepts such as mindfulness, compassion and gratitude as adults. The fundamentals of resilience and well-being begin in childhood. Encourage these behaviors from a young age to help provide a strong foundation for children. v Monisha Vasa, M.D. is a board certified General and Addiction Psychiatrist and the author of the non-fiction children’s book, Saying Thank You. It’s Hip to Have Manners 9 ways to encourage kids to be respectful and courteous

Children are subjected to a

barrage of rude behaviors on TV, in song lyrics, in video games and online. So how do you counteract external, powerful influences and encourage good manners in your family? A few simple tips can help make manners a priority and encourage kindness.

1.

Explain the why. The essence of good manners is to respect yourself and others. Remind your children how a simple courtesy (such as someone holding a door) makes them feel valued.

2.

Teach kids to greet guests when they arrive. You may want your children to stand, shake hands and address visitors. Or maybe you are satisfied with saying hello and making eye contact, even if they remain seated. Your rules may vary depending upon the guest or situation. Whatever your family rules are, teach them to your kids.

3.

Develop and enforce a technology basket. Declare a ban on electronic use when interacting with another person. Deposit phones and mobile devices in the basket so there is no texting at dinner or when hanging out with family and friends.

4. 5.

Request courteous greetings for family members. Say good morning and good night to each family member while making eye contact. This ensures you are truly present for each other and it may help minimize grumpy starts to the day. Facilitate and teach promptness. Speak to your children about how it feels to wait for people who do not arrive on time. If tardiness is a chronic issue

26 • SanDiegofamily.com • November 2016

for your family, look at your level of organization and number of commitments. Maybe changes to the family schedule would make you less rushed.

6.

Protect privacy. Teach children to speak softly when having conversations in public places, whether they are speaking with a person face-to-face or via cell phone. This protects privacy and is less disruptive to others.

7.

Teach elevator etiquette. Let everyone exit an elevator before you enter. Practice this with young children until they master it and they will remember it for life.

8.

Encourage holding doors. Model and teach the kind act of holding the door for the person entering behind you, or a person who looks like they need help. Smile and say thank you to anyone who does the same. Children will see that it feels good to interact positively with others.

9.

Explain the undesirable qualities of selfishness. Why are manners good? People who are kind are more desirable to be around. Your children are more likely to receive repeat invitations when they practice good manners. v Sue LeBreton is a health and wellness journalist and mom of two children. She strives to be mindful of her manners.

Buy Fair Trade

What it means and how you can make a difference

Did you drink a cup of coffee or eat a piece of chocolate today? Choosing fair trade coffee and chocolate can mean five times the pay for a farmer in a developing nation and a safe working environment in industries dominated by child labor. As San Diego County stores make fair trade items like chocolate, coffee, home textiles and body products more available, shoppers are becoming familiar with the label. But what does buying fair trade mean and who exactly benefits?

Empowering Women and Families Buying fair trade certified goods provides a helping hand to people in developing countries. When farmers and factory workers who produce these goods receive a fair trade premium, they decide as a community how to spend the money. Community development projects provide necessities such as health care, clean water and schools, explains Katie Goudey of Fair Trade USA. Purchasing fair trade goods makes a vital impact on women who produce more than half the world’s food, but own very little land.

Good for the Earth, Good for Consumers Certified fair trade goods benefit the environment and consumers. A third

Thanks to local groups committed to fair trade, a powerful movement is helping inform San Diegans about fair trade while making products more accessible. In 2014 fair trade advocates Anne Pacheco and Nancy Ryan from St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in La Mesa formed a committee that brings fair trade awareness to service organizations in La Mesa. The group also encourages retailers to carry more fair trade products, and brings media attention to the cause. Fair Trade Towns Campaign recognized their efforts by naming La Mesa one of the few official designated fair trade towns in California. Pacheco is impassioned about the purchasing power of consumers. “Everyday we can make a difference for the person behind the product,” says Pacheco. “I often think of those who grow my coffee beans and sew my clothes. This hard work is often done by women—even children. People can be held captive to keep costs low and production high in industries of fashion, chocolate and coffee. Fair trade helps prevent human trafficking. Fair Trade is not charity, but a real way to make a better life for so many.” Pacheco hopes that the demand for fair trade goods continues to grow as San Diegans make choices that promote social justice. Fair trade awareness and activism is growing on local college campuses, too. UC San Diego, University of San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene are designated Fair Trade Universities that commit to educating students and faculty about fair trade and sourcing fair trade items for their offices and events. A few years ago, Point Loma Nazarene’s students voted to pay an additional $3 per semester to support a Fair Trade Fund. Money raised by the fund goes towards sourcing fair trade food and clothing on campus and hosting fair trade educational events. v Cherie Gough is a San Diego mom and freelance writer who believes that voting with your dollars is a powerful message people can send every day.

What POLITICS Ca n Te ac h

KIDS From yelling newsroom pundits to

divisive Twitter exchanges, tis’ the season when there’s virtually no escape from politics. Your kids may come home with questions about opinions overheard at school or elsewhere. From a parenting perspective, the democratic process and political shenanigans provide plenty of fodder for teaching kids lessons in independent thinking, respectful discourse, values and civics. Nurture independent thinkers. Take advantage of the political process to help children learn to think for themselves. Ask your children open-ended questions to hear their points of view. “Find out what they’re thinking. What you want to do is stimulate their analytic, natural human curiosity,” says Dr. Fran Walfish, a child and family psychotherapist. Watch speeches and debates together.

Ask your child who he thinks is telling the truth based on body language or who seems more respectful during a debate. Whether you agree or not, ask, “Why do you feel that way? How would you solve the problem?” Share your opinions with your children by prefacing your comments with “I feel” or “I think” and ask questions like “I wonder how the president will make that happen?” or “How would you make it fair if you were president?” Avoid anger. As hard as it may be, try to refrain from making judgmental comments or calling candidates with whom you disagree colorful names. “Shouting at the TV, or at one another, presents a very negative example of responding to conflicting opinions,” says Mary Jane McKittrick, author of the Boomer and Halley children’s series (for ages 4–8). Through humor and

embedded life lessons, McKittrick’s books tell stories of families and communities resolving difficult challenges by working together. Model respectful dialogue. Not all parents agree on politics, but what matters is how they discuss the issues in front of their children without raising a child’s anxiety. Make ground rules with your spouse before engaging in the discussion: No interrupting, take turns listening and no put-downs, insults or blaming. And, if you come to an impasse, agree to disagree. “I would love for parents to respect each other’s points of view. I would also hope that they will respect their children’s point of view,” Walfish says. “Be able to tolerate differences. We still love each other, and I can tolerate you having powerfully different feelings than mine.” continued on p. 42

Highlights magazine recently asked kids a variety of questions about the presidential election. The answers shine a light on what kids are thinking about this election season and conversations that are taking place at home.

According to Highlights magazine’s 2016 State of the Kid survey, • 80% of families are talking about the election • 50% of kids think the first thing the new president should work on is keeping the country safe

r nts fo Discou , seniors n e r child military and

• 65% of kids do not want to run for president someday, citing stress as top reason • 70% of kids would paint the White House a different color if given the chance (most stating blue or red as the color of choice) “I would leave [the White House] white because then you don’t have to change the name,” says one 8-year-old girl. When asked what they want the president to know about their lives, some kids stated that being a kid is cool/fun, while others said it is difficult/stressful. According to one 7-year-old boy, “Life is pretty good if the grownups don’t mess it up!” Read the full 2016 State of the Kid Election Edition report at www.highlights.com/SOTK.

If you’re drawn into a heated argument around the table with loved ones, keep your cool and suggest picking up the conversation another time. Play nice. Political rhetoric may be difficult for your child to comprehend, but behavior in politics can often parallel real-life situations children can relate to about how to treat people and who we can trust. “Here we are: two political figures. They’re going to say their beliefs right out front, but wouldn’t it be nice if that was all they were doing,” Walfish says. “Instead what they’re doing is using put-downs, criticisms, (and) willing to go forward at all costs to win.” Perhaps the vindictive nature of politics will never change, but parents can use examples of how politicians conduct themselves to teach values about what it means to win honorably, treat others with respect and be a trustworthy friend. For example, on the playground, a child might promise your child that he can have the ball next, but then passes the ball to an ally or continues to hog the ball. Even a young child understands that the other child’s actions are unfair. Civics 101. Talk to kids about the democratic process. Take your child to the voting booth and follow the results on election night together to help him see the election process in action and the connection between your vote and why it matters. Find resources at https://kids.usa.gov/government. Explain that politicians are public servants and they usually enter the political process in an attempt to make a difference in the lives of citizens. Discuss ways that your family can make a difference in the community. v Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines resides with her opinionated family, which includes her husband, two rambunctious boys and a pair of playful dogs.

One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote by Bonnie Worth The Cat in the Hat introduces early readers to the concept and practice of voting, with a focus on the American presidency.

My Washington, DC by Kathy Jakobsen Take a tour of the nation’s capital in this beautifully illustrated, interactive picture book, which includes fun facts, seek-and-find challenges, a city map and a Bill of Rights poster.

Dia de los Muertos Nichos Celebrate Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Nov. 1 by creating a nicho. A nicho is a small shadow box filled with items that are special to the person who creates it (small photos of a loved one, a tiny piece of jewelry, a mini toy, etc.).

Discussion Points for Parents & Teachers • Talk about things you love. What might you put in a special place of honor? • Discuss recycled materials and using found objects to create art, collage and color.

Supplies

Directions

• Mint tin or jewelrysize cardboard box

1. Pour a small amount of white glue into a paper cup. Using a paintbrush, paint the glue on the outside of the box and sprinkle with glitter.

• Scissors

2. Once dry, repeat step one for the interior of the box if desired (and allow to dry completely), or line interior with Washi tape.

• White glue • Paintbrush • Small paper cup • Special items to put inside (small toy, photos of a loved one, a drawing, etc.) • Decorative collage items such as buttons, beads, silk flowers, glitter, colorful paper scraps, lace or Washi tape

3. Use glue to adhere flat collage items (paper scraps, lace and photos) to the interior. 4. Glue chosen small objects (flowers, toy, jewelry) inside the box to create your display. Overlap with flat items, if you wish. 5. Glue desired decorative items (beads, lace) onto the outer edges or corners of the box. 6. Once it dries completely, put it in a special place in your home. v Alyssa Navapanich is an art enthusiast who teaches art to elementary school kids in North County.

Canyon Rim Children's Center “Dedicated to the individuality of children.”

Canyon Rim Children’s Center (CRCC) has been providing high quality, enrichment, preschool programs for San Diego children since 1998. We are a full day, year round, enrichment program. Our learning philosophy is based on developmentally appropriate practices inspired by the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Our developmental, play-based, preschool serves children ages two through six.

At CRCC, we strive to maintain child to teacher ratios lower than those required by the State of California. Our teachers’ educational credentials exceed those as specified by the State. Our professional staff creates a safe and caring environment where the emphasis is on learning through play. As Fred Rogers, a.k.a., “Mr. Rogers” said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” We recognize each child is a unique person with individual rates of growth. Our goal is to meet each child’s

emotional, social, cognitive and physical needs in a relaxed, loving environment, free from personal criticism and excessive competition. Activities in art, music, math, language, science, dramatic play, fine and gross motor development are fashioned to facilitate transition from one developmental stage to the next. Our teachers also use our wellequipped, natural playgrounds to support exploration and promote physical development. Natural outdoor spaces enhance curiosity & encourage children to develop an appreciation and awareness of nature. At CRCC, children develop the skills of observation, inquiry, concentration, problem solving, and self-reliance. Our structured, yet open-ended program prepares each child to utilize his or her intellectual and creative abilities in future learning tasks. Here we work to give each child the tools and the foundation on which to build a lifetime of learning. Kindergarten teachers love our CRCC children!

Happy Kids Hang Out Here You can go to work confident your child is safe, happy, having fun and thriving with our teachers. We help your child develop excitement and curiosity about learning, plus strong self-esteem that can last a lifetime.

Every fall we are faced with the same question: To get the flu shot or not to get the flu shot? How do you make the best decision for your family? First of all, it is important to remember that the flu (influenza infection) is more than just a bad cold. Influenza is a serious illness that causes sudden onset of high fever, sore throat, headache, fatigue and body aches. Patients with the flu are at risk for pneumonia, dehydration, worsening of chronic disease, hospitalization and death. In order to protect yourself, your family and those around you from the flu, vaccination is recommended. Below is more information on the vaccines. · Getting yearly flu shots: Influenza comes in many varieties, which mainly includes types A and B. Both A and B have a variety of antigens (proteins that trigger an immune response) on them. Each year the antigens on the virus “drift” or change. That, combined with decreasing immunity, means we need updated shots yearly. · Who should get the flu shot: Ideally, everyone over the age of 6 months. People with asthma, heart disease, immunocompromised conditions, children taking aspirin and pregnant women should definitely be vaccinated. Also, people who work in health care or who care for babies should receive their annual flu shots. The more people who are protected, the greater our herd immunity.

· Types of available vaccine: There used to be 2 types of flu vaccine available. This year, only the injectable vaccine is being used because the nasal mist vaccine was not as effective as once thought. The injectable vaccine is available for age 6 months and up and is NOT a live virus vaccine. It only has components of 4 strains of the flu, 2 A (including H1N1) and 2 B. · Egg allergies: If your child has a confirmed egg allergy by an allergist but is able to tolerate foods baked with egg or only has mild hives when they eat egg, they can get the shot in the pediatrician’s office. Be prepared to wait for 30 minutes to watch for reaction afterwards. If your child has anaphylaxis to egg, it is now felt to be safe to get a flu shot. It is best to discuss your options with the allergist. Some allergists will administer the vaccine under careful observation. · Timing: The best time to get the flu shot is before any potential exposure to the flu. It takes about 2 weeks for the flu shot to be fully active. Talk to your doctor about when flu season begins in your area so you can schedule your shot accordingly. · Can you get the flu from the flu shot? You cannot get the flu from the shot because there is no live virus in it. The immune response may cause mild flu-like symptoms including body aches or fever. These symptoms usually last a day or 2 and are not nearly as severe as an actual influenza infection as they are not caused by the flu itself.

HOW TO TEACH THE VALUE OF GIVING BACK Giving to others tops the list of life

lessons we’ve tried to teach our kids since they were little. To drive this point home, we adopted a three-pronged approach to giving: we donated our money, gave away our things and offered our time. Sometimes we did this as a family, while other times, it was a solo effort. The net result? We infused our family with the spirit of giving.

Giving Money

• We sponsored a boy from Zambia for 10 years, helping to provide food, clothing, medical care and other necessities. The boys chipped in from their giving jars when we sent in our monthly sponsorship gift.

When my boys (now 15 and 18) first started receiving an allowance, my husband and I made them divvy it up into three jars: spending, saving and giving. Giving jar coins would accumulate for months until we found a worthy cause to help. We’d match them dollar for dollar and either donate the money or purchase items and donate them. Our family has given money in a variety of ways, usually tying into something that benefits other kids.

Giving Things

• We bought backpacks, clothes and school supplies in August and donated them to organizations conducting back-to-school campaigns to help needy kids in our community.

• As a homeschooling family, we accumulated a lot of books and magazines, which we donated to local schools and the public library after we finished reading them.

• At Christmas, the boys picked a name off the “Angel Tree” at church and we shopped for gifts. One year, we pooled money with several families to help a boy on my son’s soccer team whose family was struggling financially. We bought clothes, toys, books and bicycles for the soccer buddy and his three brothers, in addition to food and presents for his parents.

66 • SanDiegofamily.com • November 2016

When we donate things we love, it’s like sharing a part of ourselves with others. Over the years, we’ve donated hundreds of things that our family no longer needs. • As our growing boys outgrew their clothing and toys, we donated them to community organizations such as the Salvation Army, San Diego Rescue Mission and Amvets.

• When my boys outgrew their beloved wooden train set, they donated it (along with the wooden train table my husband built) to Boys Town for the young residents to enjoy.

Giving Time Sometimes we volunteer as a family. Other times, my husband and I do our own volunteering gigs, partly out of our passion for the cause and partly to model a giving heart in action.

San Diego County organizations need your help! Visit www.SanDiegoFamily .com/things-to-do/ donations-volunteers-andfundraisers/1865 to discover 13 ways your family can volunteer this Thanksgiving. • As a family, we volunteered for Make-A-Wish, which grants wishes to kids with life-threatening medical conditions and their families. • Our kids volunteered more than 150 hours by painting murals for the library, distributing food at a food pantry, refereeing soccer games at the YMCA, distributing school supplies at a back-to-school fair, working as camp counselors for the Down’s Syndrome Association and providing social media marketing for a nonprofit’s fundraiser. • My husband volunteered as my son’s soccer coach for almost 10 years, while I volunteered in various public school and homeschool positions and events. Our three-pronged approach definitely infused the spirit of giving into our family. The key is to simply do what works for your family. v Lisa Beach is a freelance writer, humorist and recovering homeschool mom who lived to write about it.
