Your Wish Is Our Command Photo Shoot

Cover models heading for Tweenies Beach. And yes, stopping traffic.

Setting the stage...

Getting busted by Doug and Jeff.

Waiting on our props.

A special thanks to everyone involved in making this another fun cover shoot: Danny - “Does this hat make me look silly?” - Adams, cover model and Director of Sales & Marketing at Holiday Inn. Lee Ellen Harder and Jennie Smith from BIG ARTS and The Herb Strauss Theater for hooking us up with Danny’s genie costume. Showcase Shells of Sanibel (now in Fort Myers) for letting us borrow the giant Junonia. (Which I had to guard with my life!) Jeff Shuff and Doug Babcock with Tween Waters Inn for letting us use their beach and their staff. The gals at the pool bar were amazing. They concocted a giant supply of strawberry daiquiris for the shoot. And of course my husband, my muse and key grip, Dan Budd. www.Sanibel-Captiva.org

HONOR OF DISTINCTION

MICHAEL GARBE, with the Castaways Beach and Bay Cottages

“My daughter, 12, and her friend, 13, wanted to go kayaking, so we rented kayaks and off they went… They disappeared behind the island but I didn’t initially worry because I assumed they would reappear on the other side. When there was still no sign of them 30 minutes later, I became concerned. My husband had circled the small island twice and there was no sign of the girls so I called 911, who called the police, the Sheriff’s department, and the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard said they would send

a boat but it would take over 25 minutes. Needless to say, I was becoming frantic. When Michael was told what happened, he didn’t hesitate to take action. And when he found the girls, aground on an oyster bed over two miles from the island due to the current, he made them sit in the canoe while he used his maintenance radio to call in. Though transmission was bad, the front desk staff heard him. Then he began the difficult paddle back to safety, with the kayaks attached, against the current. When they finally made it back, in this nominee’s typical caring manner, all he asked the mom to do was to not ground the girls.”

ATTRACTIONS

TYLER HAAS, with South Seas Island Resort

A nominator expressed the spirit of this category winner well—“I want to let you know you have the most amazing employee. My son has a passion for fishing and I’m not a fisherman at all. As we went out Tuesday to catch just one fish to make his vacation memorable, we met my nominee. He helped us bait the hook, then showed my son how to practice from the

dock. Three fish later, my son’s joy and excitement were unbelievable. My nominee was so helpful and patient with my son and made his day. This went on the whole vacation—every time my son and I were on the dock my nominee wasn’t far away to lend a helping hand. I could not be more thankful to him for his patience and for making this summer family trip one my son will NOT forget.”

Barb’s Blog Luminary Shines Brighter This Year! The Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce is getting ready to celebrate their 27th annual Luminary Festival the weekend of Dec. 2 & 3. Mark your calendars and get ready for the celebration. This year, chair-elect Mike Miller is joined by his lovely wife Linda, and together they will be working to head the committee and recruit volunteers. We need your assistance as the event continues to grow. If you can volunteer please contact them at FtmyersMouse@comcast.net. Get ready for an eventful weekend! On Friday night Chamber members (individuals, businesses and service groups) light Periwinkle Way from the East End to the Olde Sanibel Shoppes with luminary candles. Businesses open their doors with food and beverages and entertainment venues pop up at various locations. Santa arrives for his final weekend in the tropics before heading north for his big event. On Saturday, Captiva embraces Luminary weekend with lights and activities throughout the village. Their second annual golf cart parade begins on Saturday afternoon and includes prizes for the best decorated golf cart. The public is invited to enter this fun event. The plan this year is to shuttle people from Captiva to Sanibel on Friday and from Sanibel to Captiva on Saturday. Thus you can see the need for additional volunteers. Luminary should be a bright beginning for our holiday season. See you there!
