hat a year it has been! We are still basking in the glow of our alum reunion in late August. It was such a fun weekend and we are incredibly grateful to those of you who made the trip to Florissant to help us celebrate. We have included a lot of photos in this edition and hope that those of you who were here will enjoy reliving the memories, and that those of you who sadly couldn’t make it will feel really jealous and vow to attend in 2023 when we celebrate our 75th anniversary.

Our 70th summer was awesome. Over 700 campers and 160 staff created the community of 2018 and thrived in the out-of-doors. Sixty-nine different groups stood on the summits of nineteen different mountains, thousands of miles were logged in the saddle, many glorious days were spent backpacking along mountain trails, and innumerable friendships were formed. Even our three-day evacuation due to a nearby wildfire could not dampen our spirits— many of our campers listed this experience as one of the highlights of the summer!

We also began a new Capital Campaign—Sanborn Tomorrow: Preserving Our History, Ensuring Our Future—to help us renovate our facilities and build an endowment for the Sanborn Scholarship Fund.

We are so grateful for your support for these critical projects. And, with funds given early in the campaign, we completed our first capital improvement project, the rebuilding of Jumping Juniper cabin. The new cabin has received rave reviews from campers, staff, parents, HTOEC students and teachers.

At this time of year, as we take the time to count our many blessings, we are incredibly thankful for our friends around the globe. Happy, Happy Holidays!

Dear Alums, Fortunately Laura and Sandy took photos of converting an eroding potato farm 5 miles south of Florissant in 1948 as they transformed it into Big Spring Ranch for Boys. These pictures show the crumbling farmhouse at the foot of the hill, the magnificent New England-style barn and a maze of broken corrals.

They depict determined efforts to build a home that would become the dining room of the growing camp. They carved out a mini heated swimming pool down by the barn and cleaned up the corrals to create an exciting horseback program.

Sometime last winter DAN MILLER (BS 80-87, Staff 88, 90) hatched the idea of a “thenand-now” book to compare photos of the early years of Big Spring and High Trails with contemporary pictures of the summer of 2018 for our 70th anniversary. He recruited his cousin, JIM THARP (BS 9196, Staff 98), an accomplished film maker and photographer, to collaborate on the project.

It was also fortunate that Sandy and Laura engaged Jim Bates to photograph camp life during the 50s and 60s. Jim worked for the printer’s union in Colorado Springs and was a nationally known professional photographer. He took photos of a wide variety of camp activities, tent and cabin-side groups, and all-camp and ridge groups.

Everything had to be perfect. Many alums will remember how we groaned when we posed while Jim got everything just right.

Camp catalogs contained his photos into

the 80s. Jim also hired a plane and took aerial photos over Big Spring and High Trails in the early 60s.

Last summer Jim Tharp filmed shots from the same vantage point as many of the vintage pictures. He used a drone to replicate many of the aerials taken 55 years ago.

The book traces the development of the camps comparing living units, swimming pools, the Lodges, riding programs, Sunday Rocks/vespers, campouts, and more then and now.

My favorite pair of photos is what Sandy called the “Hollywood photos.” (When High Trails opened the in 1962, we had no activities or facilities of the girl’s camp to use for camper recruitment. We had drawings and sketches of a map and a cabin (being built at that time) to use in a brochure, but no photos.

Sandy and Laura borrowed some photos from the directors of a camp near Buena Vista – swimming pool, horseback riding, rifle range, etc. – to create a “fake” catalogue until after the first summer.)

After sorting, comparing, a couple of re-shoots, editing, and laying out, Jim and Dan came up with a memorable volume they named “Sanborn Revisited.” I wrote some text to explain and tell some stories.

The original impetus for the book was to offer it in the alum art auction at the Sanborn 70 Reunion last August. Dan arranged for DUNCAN CLARKE, former ranch manager and head wrangler (87-

99) to hand-tool a leather cover. It was a stunning addition to the silent auction resulting in high interest and vigorous bidding. At the end of the auction the winning bid was $300 from YOSHI INOUE (BS 63) who had come from Japan for the reunion.

Throughout the fall we have been working to make the volume available for others.

Because it began as a fundraiser for the Sandy and Laura Scholarship Endowment, we built in a small percentage to be a donation and priced it at $100, which includes sales tax and postage. If you would like to receive a copy, you can email me and I will mail one to you.

Jim Bates took lots of photos that first summer. Sandy and Laura had the idea to pose a group at Humpty Dumpty Rock west of the Lodge to represent all the activities offered to the girls: horseback riding, tennis, swimming, geology, modern dance, hiking, sports, and camping.

It was a dramatic tableau! Last summer Jim Tharp and his High Trails helpers created an amazing re-enactment if this iconic scene.

It is fun to page through the book and realize how Sandy’s and Laura’s vision and passion are still alive and well after these seven decades.

IT WAS EPIC!!

ore than 400 alums and their families traveled to Florissant August 16-19 to help us celebrate our 70th Anniversary. Prehistorics, Dark Agers, and youngsters from the Olden Days all gathered for a fun-filled weekend of camp activities, great food, friendship, and the rekindling of camp memories.

featured a carnival for the kids and a welcoming get-together with singing, a video or two, and, of course, the Surprise Melodrama. On Friday, we gathered at The Nature Place for an Alumni Art Auction. All art was donated by our talented alum artists and the quality and variety of art on display was impressive. The auction was followed by a fun dance with a local disk jockey which lasted late into the night. (No one even had to chant “One more dance!”). On Saturday, we had a steak fry and campfire which featured lots of singing, stories, and a revival of Herman the Bear.

Alums slept at The Nature Place, in the High Trails cabins, and in the tents and yurts at Big Spring. Quite a few even brought their own tents and camped out. During the day we hiked, rode horses, climbed rocks, canoed, tubed on the river, made crafts, sang, and had a great time enjoying favorite activities. Four different groups climbed mountains, some even making it to the summit through snow, sleet, and hail.

We closed on Sunday with a morning Sunday Rocks service followed by brunch at High Trails. Everyone traveled home with old memories refreshed and new memories created, as well as old friendships renewed and new friendships made.

Many were still humming camp songs. We are now all looking forward to the 75th Reunion!

Camp Marriages: #75 & #76 MOLLY RADIS (HT Staff 14-15) and JACKSON BLACKBURN (BS Staff 11-15) were married on July 7, 2018 on Peaks Island in Maine. There were plenty of Sanborn alums who made the trip, including MEGAN BLACKBURN, Jackson’s sister, who was working as a High Trails ridge leader last summer. CHRIS and SARAH ULIZIO (Camp Marriage #74) brought the HTOEC Folk Dance favorite, “Chili Chili” to the rehearsal dinner, while IAN STAFFORD, MICHAEL PIEL and ADAM DELP competed for the impromptu Best Beard in Maine award.

In 2015, Molly, a nurse at High Trails, and Jackson, the Big Spring Program Director, spent the summer climbing multiple mountains in single days, running long distances, and otherwise realizing they really enjoyed adventuring together. After a few years in Bend, OR, the couple moved to Vietnam where they currently work at the St. Paul American School in Hanoi.

BEA RAEMDONCK (HT 01-05; Staff 08-12) and KELLY MUEDEKING (HT 03-06; Staff 09-14) were married at The Piney River Ranch outside of Vail, CO on September 1st, 2018. It was an international affair, with many of Bea’s family making the journey from Belgium including her uncle who sang John Denver’s “Annie’s Song” during the ceremony.

With over 35 SWC alums in attendance, MOLLY MUEDEKING, as Kelly’s Maid of Honor, and DIETER RAEMDONCK as Bea’s Man of Honor, and CLARA TROYER, MADELEIN JURDEN, and WILL OSTENDORF as a few of their attendants--it was a Sanborn celebration for the ages. The guests all began the ceremony with a reading of the vespers “Opening” together. IAN STAFFORD officiated the wedding and shared stories of Bea and Kelly’s friendship that began when Bea was a High Trails wrangler and Kelly was a High Trails ridge leader. The requisite “Sanborn Photo” immediately followed the ceremony and was only complete when LESLIE RISS Raemdonck--Bea’s mother--was summoned with a full group chant of “Liss! Liss! Liss! Liss!”

has been a year of many reunions, reconnections and serendipity (see page 19) for our Sanborn Alums.

From our 70th Reunion in August (see pages 4-7 and back pages), to our reconnects this last month (see page 13), to weddings (we had TWO camp marriages this last summer!), to meet ups among friends to climb mountains or go to baseball games, the Sanborn community is stronger than ever and continuing to grow.

BILL MALINOWSKI

August 20, 1958—August 11, 2016 BILL MALINOWSKI (HTOEC) was a long-time reporter for the Providence Journal in Providence, RI. His reporting work earned him a Master Reporter award in 2014. He is survived by his wife, Mary Murphy and daughter, Molly Malinowski.

BOB HERSHBERGER

April 13, 1964—May 20, 2018 BOB HERSHBERGER (BS Staff 83-87) was a Professor of Spanish at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, where he taught for 20 years. Bob and wife, SARAH McADAMS (HT Staff 85-87, 90) had two daughters, Katie and Annie.

• authored more than 400 scientific publications, including 35 books. He traveled extensively during his long career and was often found on another continent chasing a rare butterfly.

Tom was on the Big Spring staff from 1960-1966 and spent much of that time with a butterfly net in his hand. He returned to Florissant often, and inspired Sandy to build Pikes Peak Research Station in 1982, originally designed to be a summer field research campus for students from the University of Florida Zoology Department. Tom brought numerous groups to The Nature Place, including many of the countless students he mentored over the years. As recently as 2016 he brought a large group from the Lepidoptera Society to The Nature Place. His book, “Florissant Butterflies”, is the definitive study of the butterflies (both fossilized and present day) in our area.

With help from Tom’s family and friends, we have created a butterfly garden at The Nature Place in Tom’s memory. It is a fitting tribute.

May 8, 1941—May 26, 2018

TOM EMMEL was a lifelong friend of camp and those of you who knew Tom will be saddened to hear of his passing.

Tom was a professor in the Zoology Department at the University of Florida for many years and was known as one of the world’s experts in Lepidoptera. At Florida he served as department chairman for Zoology, directed the Department of Zoology Division of Lepidoptera Research from 19802003, and directed the UF Boender Endangered Species Laboratory since its inception in 1995.

In 2004, Tom was chosen to be the Founding Director of the Florida Museum’s McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the University of Florida. In addition, Tom

hen people leave camp, they rarely say, “Goodbye...” it is usually “See you later!” Mike, Jerry, and Jane loved seeing many of you at our fun Reconnect Events in Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City this fall. Thank-you to all of you who joined us for the evening. Our Giving Tree

or several years we have been thinking about a special and unique way to honor those alums and camp friends who have made major donations to COEC over the years. We wanted to do something more meaningful than bricks, walls, plaques or some of the other common ways that organizations thank their donors. We are happy to say that we think we have created the perfect solution—a Giving Tree.

Local sculptor Fred Clifford took our initial concept and created an Aspen tree from steel which we unveiled at our 70th Reunion. The tree stands about 10 feet tall and is “planted” at our main gate so everyone who drives in can see it. The leaves on the tree are engraved with the names of each donor who has made gifts totaling more than $10,000 to Sanborn Western Camps/COEC. Fred is currently working on two smaller trees which will stand beside the original Aspen, so before long, we will have a small grove. Although we are humbled by the number of engraved leaves we already have, there are plenty of blank leaves that will allow us to continue to honor donors into the foreseeable future.

Playing Favorites

alented camp singer and songwriter ANNIE GARRETSON (HT 65-71; Staff 72-77, 82-83) created a wonderful CD to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Sanborn Camps and is donating all proceeds from the sale of the CD to Colorado Outdoor Education Center. The CD was a huge hit at the Reunion, as were Annie’s songfests throughout the weekend.

Called “Playing Favorites”, the CD includes well-known camp songs like “Barges”, “Night Rider’s Lament”, “M.T.A.”, “River”, “Redtail”, “High Trails”, “Away With the Rum”, “When Camping Is Over”, and “Wake Up” (written by SARAH LEGETT (66-69; Staff 70, 73). It also contains three of Annie’s original songs: “Choir in the Woods”, “Sunday Rocks Tribute”, and “Starlight and Moonshine” written

by Annie and PAT MALONE (BS Staff 83-86). In addition to Annie’s beautiful voice, harmony on several songs is provided by SUSAN RISSMAN (HT Staff 84-85). In addition to guitar, outstanding mandolin and fiddle work really enhances the familiar songs.

n August 17, during our 70th Anniversary Reunion, we announced the public phase of our new Sanborn Tomorrow capital campaign.

The campaign has two major goals. The first is to help us continue with major renovations to some of our aging facilities. The second is to create a Sanborn Scholarship Endowment.

Capital Improvements Fund: Over the years we have made a significant effort to maintain our facilities at a high level, as we realize that the condition of our physical plant reflects upon the quality of our programs and the experience of our campers and staff. We are now at the point in our history where some of our oldest, most outdated buildings need to be replaced. The first High Trails cabins, for instance,

Sanborn Scholarship Endowment: Our current Sandy and Laura Sanborn Scholarship Annual Fund provides tuition assistance to deserving young people who could not otherwise attend Big Spring or High Trails. It also helps lowincome students attend the High Trails Outdoor Education Center with their classes. In 2018 we were able to help almost 50 campers attend Big Spring/High Trails and over 100 students attend HTOEC. However, the current fund does not allow us to plan for the future, as we have consistently provided as much or more financial aid than we have received. The Sanborn Scholarship Fund Endowment Wit and wisdom via Jane Sanborn will signify our long-term commitment to making the life-enhancing opportunities of camp and outdoor education available to all youth, and will provide the additional funding needed to support our growing pool of applicants.

were built in 1962, and have seen hard use for more than 55 years. Not only do they provide a home for our campers during the summer, but for thousands of students who attend High Trails Outdoor Education Center each fall and spring. Replacing them with new cabins which meet current codes and safety standards is an expensive process which cannot be included in our operational budget without raising our tuition to unreasonable levels.

We also have plans at Big Spring, including a new health center, an expansion of the Big Spring Lodge, and a new program/welcome center. None of our projects will expand the size of Big Spring or High Trails -- we are committed to keeping our community small enough for everyone to know each other. And our goal, with all redesigned buildings is to maintain the rustic feel of the camps.

Trails to Forever Memories We could not have asked a better person. Darcie is extremely well-known in the art world and her oil paintings of the natural world are displayed in many of the finest art galleries in the West. Her work is included in many art show and was featured in “Southwest Art” magazine in June, 2017. The cover of the magazine is her painting “Sonoran Sundown Patina” and the magazine contains an excellent story about her life and work. Trails to Forever Memories

s our 70th year approached and we anticipated our upcoming Alum Reunion and Sanborn Tomorrow Capital Campaign, we asked alum artist DARCIE SWENARTON (HT Staff 65-68) Peet if she would create a painting of an iconic place at camp to help celebrate our anniversary. Darcie agreed enthusiastically and, after studying a number of camp photos we had collected over the years, selected a view from the top of Little Blue overlooking Sunday Rocks and Pikes Peak. The resulting painting, “Trails to Forever Memories” is stunning.

uring the summer, we regularly run into other challenge seeking adventurists in the Colorado mountains who have either heard of, know someone who went to, or have themselves attended Sanborn.

Staff 84-85), who had climbed the mountain with his son, Harrison that same day. Mt. Sherman, for both the majority of the girls on the trip and for Harrison, was a challenging and memorable “first fourteener” experience. The High Trails ladies were taking celebratory photos and Jim took our whole group picture for us-and then he said, “Are you all from a camp? I climbed MY first Colorado 14er when I worked at a camp...in Florissant.”

This also happens in less obvious locales, like airports, foreign countries, sporting events, elevators in skyscrapers and college reunions. When these serendipitous encounters occur, we highly recommend you document them with your handy-dandy smartphone, or at least jot down everyon’es name on a gum wrapper at the summit, on the subway, or on the street.

It was a cool experience for the campers and it has been a great story to tell for all of us. It has brought up memories for Jim of AC friends, Andy and Mike, with whom he shared a legendary “Rock the Casbah” prank that involved bell ringing and possibly a bit of a chat with Jerry about pranking in general. His time at Sanborn was short, but the experiences he had in both the Alps with his grandfather, and in Colorado with a bunch of glacier-glasseswearing, Garden of the Gods climbing dudes have stuck with him throughout his climbing career...and he still has his AC photo in a frame in his house.

Back in October, our very own OLIVER FISHER (BS 01-06; BS Staff 15-18) ran the Chicago marathon.

He brought his own Sanborn fan club (MEGAN BLACKBURN (HT Staff 14-18) and ANNE SHINGLER (HT Staff 15-present) to the event to cheer him, and the other runners, on. While we were checking out his photos from the event, our Instagram and Facebook feeds were filling up with other Sanborn friends who were running the marathon at the same time.

NORA PHILBIN (HT 08-09; Staff 13-14) was on the charity team for Advocate Health Care, while ZENA DAOLE (HT Staff 14-15) was running her 6th marathon, and other Chicagoans (and Sanborn alum) were out there cheering on the runners.

In a note from Jim: “I have a lot of good memories of Sanborn and am thankful to have met you today and see the good work continues. I did my first 14er with Sanborn, so today was a bit of a “full circle event” since it was my son’s first 14er. It has been terrific fun to share this story with my friends and family and always happy to see young people developing a love for the mountains and nature in general!”

Along with continuing to seek challenging experiences, we hope you will reconnect with your sense of wonder and community as we move into this upcoming busy holiday season. We hope you will be the one who smiles, says hello, and finds something in common with the person sitting next to you in the dentist’s waiting room. We hope you will hold the door, pay attention, and really listen to the child who is telling you a story. We hope you will be present, kind and open enough to experience serendipity-because sometimes the day-to-day feels a lot like a marathon or climbing a mountain--without the support of cheering fans or encouraging friends.

This made us think about the importance of doing hard things and also the additional strength that being part of a supportive community provides. Countless parenting experts talk about the need to provide children with environments or opportunities that challenge them--where they can “fail forward” or recognize they can do more than they thought they can do--by simply taking the time to practice, persevere, and follow through--one step after another.

Yet, because of camp, we know how to make friends and be supportive and encouraging to the communities around us. So the next time you are out in the woods, or at a coffee shop, or waiting

in the security line, take

a minute and say hello...

you might realize you

have more in common

than you thought.

Climbing mountains and running marathons requires some of the same mental focus and energy--though Oliver might say he had a little more energy after climbing a mountain than he did after Mile 24. Most importantly, and interestingly, it is the support of those around us during those challenging times that make the experience even more memorable.

We wonder how many other Sanborn campers, staff, alums or friends of COEC were out on the Chicago course on October 7th?

They would have been cheering on other family and friends and/ or possibly running alongside someone they didn’t know, but-if they could have asked--they might have realized they had a shared, small town called Florissant, in common.

n June 30th, with weather conditions forecasting high and erratic winds, the High Chateau Fire which began on June 29th and was located approximately 2 miles southeast of the southeast corner of camp property (nearest to PPRS) and over 5 miles away from the main camp area, precipitated the second all-camp evacuation in our history.

Though both the Park and Teller County sheriff ’s departments felt fairly confident that the immediate camp area and structures would be safe with the current weather patterns, there was a strong sense that the fire was spreading so rapidly and so erratically that a mandatory evacuation was issued to COEC. With the incredible support of the Manitou Springs School District, we were able to load all campers and non-driving staff into buses and make our way to Eagleview Middle School in Colorado Springs midday on Saturday, June 30th.

With the support of alums, parents, and community members, we were able to take the camp experience to an urban environment--and spent the next four days and three nights building all-camp community, overcoming challenges and feeling deeply grateful for the support of the larger Sanborn family.

Some highlights included:

On the whole, being evacuated is heaps better than having a fire at camp--but, when the campers asked if we could add an “Evacuation All-Day” to the schedule for 2019 we said, “Um, that’s a great idea...but we’re not going to do it.”

• SWC alum and current camp parents Ardelle and JON STONER donating Josh and John’s ice cream for 500 • The Zombie Apocalypse activity that was part tag, part

costume, part hide and seek, and all fun in the middle school • Jamie Lester, principal of Eagleview Middle School, who came to the school every day to make sure we had everything we needed.

• Food and activity donations and discounts from Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Springs Trampoline Park, Frosty Freeze ice cream truck.

• Evening activity support (yoga, one man bands and more!) from Kat and Bob Tudor, former SWC parents and anchors of the Colorado Springs artistic community and from Dallo Fall and Jamoral who provided an evening of experiential Senegalese singing and dancing.

• The wranglers and the Teller County community who all helped evacuate and care for both Sanborn and community horses off site.

• Colorado College’s Rochelle Taylor, CC’s summer housing and conference manager, who arranged for showers, soap and towels for all of our campers and staff on the third day of the evacuation in Loomis Hall.

• The JC’s and Outbackers leading evening meetings and sing-a-longs • Carlotta Avery and the SWC cooks who made a full camp style lasagna dinner (lasagna, salad, bread sticks) and drove it down in ancient river trip vans to the school • “Sanborn’s Got Talent” talent show in the black-box theatre (and the younger girls’ sleeping quarters) • Hiking at Red Rocks Open Space, feeding the giraffes at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, playing Gaga ball in the school courtyard, being Ninja Warriors at Springs Adventure Park and playing lots and lots of Magic (it’s a card game).

• BARB ROWLEY, ASHLEY NORD McGOWAN, and LIBBY MALONE being our front line parent communicators, responding to calls, emails and wonderings of concerned parents so we could keep our focus on the campers and staff.

• Chuck Murphy and the whole Grayline Bus Tours company and staff who transported campers around Colorado Springs and, eventually, back to camp...and spent two days and a night at The Nature Place in case we needed to be evacuated again.

The porcupine may seem to be the king of all he sees While dining in the penthouse atop the greatest trees And when he’s ready for a stroll, he doesn’t have to sweat For anyone who touches him is instant “en brochette.”

But the porky has a problem, in spite of all his riches What is there for him to do when...his back side itches He might begin by asking friends to come a little closer But when he bristles up his quills, his friends say, “Adios, sir.”
