from the editor Sawadee Khrap and Happy THAI New Year! Wow! Does the time fly! Only three short months ago we rang in the 2012 New Year. Now, on April 13th-15th, Thailand celebrates with it's own New Year called Songkran. It is a wet and wild festival that officially only lasts three days – but in some parts of Thailand can last up to one week! So welcome to the year 2555; grab a bucket and enjoy the festivities. In this issue we share Thai-style weddings, also referred to as Buddhist weddings, with everyone around the world. While most couples who do choose a Buddhist ceremony are Thai nationals, marrying another Thai national – many Western couples are discovering the enjoyment and uniqueness of having a Buddhist ceremony in Thailand, conducted by authentic monks from a local temple. You don't have to be a Buddhist to partake in a Buddhist wedding ceremony. You just have to be respectful of their beliefs, this includes not dressing or acting inappropriately around the monks. So enjoy the information about this unforgettable ceremony and if you're planning on getting married on Koh Samui – ask your wedding planner to add the Buddhist ceremony to your western service and enjoy a touch of both worlds. Also in this issue we feature the Winner of the 1st Annual Koh Samui Wedding Cake-Off 2012; Chef Chaitawat “Bob” Rabiabaot from Silavadee Pool Spa Resort in Lamai. The competition was close and the cakes tasted amazing! Congratulations to all the couples who chose to get married on Koh Samui in the last year. And to all the couples who will get married on our tropical island - the sand and sea is ready to greet you. Finally, I stepped into the 21st Century and got a Facebook account not long ago. You can now officially “LIKE” Samui Bride & Honeymoon at www.facebook.com/SamuiBride And if you missed our previous issues – they are available as free downloads on our website: www.samuibride.com. See you next issue and enjoy the Thai New Year!

legal marriage in the kingdom of thailand Where You Will Need To Start

If you want to have a legal marriage in the Kingdom of Thailand, as well as being recognized as a legal marriage in your home country, there are a few very important steps that must be taken. With each couple wishing to go through the legal registration process, there are two real choices for you; do it yourself or hire someone to help you.

This process requires you to be in Bangkok between five (5) and seven (7) business days to complete the whole process. If you do not have that much time or do not feel comfortable doing all the running around yourself, you can hire a professional legal liaison company to assist you with your legal registration. Again, there are many to choose from on the internet, but there are a lot of phony companies out there so you still need to be aware. You WILL definitely get what you pay for. The best companies will assist you with every step, either in person or through detailed directions, usually giving a couple of options with different price ranges. We certainly recommend hiring someone to help you register. The importance of making sure every step is done correctly can mean the difference of you being legally married – or not. The choice is yours.

No matter what option you choose, you must begin at your embassy in Bangkok – in person. Most countries have documents to fill out before you arrive to make the process quicker, as well as a processing fee paid directly to the embassy. Many allow same-day service while some countries, like the U.K., require one (1) day to process.

Samui Legal Marriage

After you have gone to your embassy and have your completed documents in hand, they need to be translated into Thai by a certified translator in Bangkok. There are many to choose from, but not all of them are legitimate, so be aware. After translating into Thai, the documents are then submitted to the Thai Foreign Affairs Department for three (3) days before they are ready to collect. Once your documents have cleared the Foreign Affairs Dept., at any point you can get married legally at the “Amphur's” (Registrar's) office in Bangkok - or on Koh Samui after your wedding ceremony. At the office you will simply sign some papers and be issued your legal marriage certificates immediately. Congratulations, you are now married. Once again your documents need to be resubmitted to the Thai Foreign Affairs Dept for 3 days to process. Then they will need to be taken back to the certified translator who will translate from Thai to your native language. Then, some countries require those final translations to be submitted back to the embassy in Bangkok before that country will legally recognize your marriage.

From Hong Kong to Koh Samui – has 1 flight per day. Flight PG 806 departs at 16:55 (4:55pm) and arrives at 19:00 (7:00pm). Average flight time is 3 hours 30 minutes.

There are now over 150 flights per week into Koh Samui; including international flights from Singapore, Hong Kong, Cambodia and Malaysia.

From Siem Reap, Cambodia to Koh Samui – has 1 flight per day. Flight PG 906 departs at 13:15 (1:15pm) and arrives at 17:05 (5:05pm). Average flight time is 3 hours 50 minutes.

Bangkok Air (www.bangkokair.com) is the largest carrier to Koh Samui, but Thai Airways (www.thaiairways.com) also has flights from Bangkok and Firefly (www.fireflyz.com.my) is the only carrier from Malaysia.

Flight Information for 2011 Bangkok Air From Bangkok to Koh Samui - has on average 20 flights per day, every day. First flight departs 06:00 (6:00am) and last flight is 21:00 (9:00pm). Average flight time is only around 1 hour.

Samui Bride & Honeymoon

Firefly Airlines From Subang, Malaysia to Koh Samui - has 1 flight per day, every day. Flight FY 3608 departs at 13:35 (1:35pm) and arrives at 14:35 (2:35pm). Average flight time is 2 hours.

By Train – If your guests would like to have more of an adventure on their way to Koh Samui and save a little money compared to flying; they can take the overnight train to Suratthani (approx. 12 hours from Bangkok) and then a bus (for 1 hour) to the ferry pier. The ferry boat usually runs every 2 hours from dawn to dusk, every day. The ferry crossing takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. There are several classes in the sleeper cars available. 3rd class is not an option so don't let your guests even consider it. 2nd Class with air-con is a good choice as it can be VERY warm with just a fan. These cars sleep around 32 people, each with their own fold-down bunk (top and bottom), 16 on each side of the train with a center aisle for moving about and a community toilet at one end of the car. If they catch an early evening train, the cabin steward will come around and make up their bed after dinner-time. If they catch the late-night train, their bunks will most likely be ready for them when they board. The other option on the train is the 1st Class Air-Con Sleeper Cabin for 2. Ideal for couples who want more privacy, each cabin has 2 fold-down bunks that can be converted at any time upon request and a private sink. But a heads-up for those traveling alone – a 1st class sleeper cabin is sold as individual bunks, so unless you purchase both the upper and lower bunks – there may be a chance a guest will have to share the cabin with someone of the same sex that they dont know. Local Thai's walk the train all night selling cold drinks, snacks and Thai food or guests can pre-order their meal from a waitress that walks through the car, which is then prepared in the trains kitchen and delivered to their seat or cabin. Breakfast can also be preordered the night before this way. A train official will let them know when they need to get off. Most people will get off in Suratthani and then catch a bus (about 1 hour) to the Don Sak pier where they will take a car-ferry across to Koh Samui – a journey that takes about 1 ½ hours. A less common option is to get off the train in Chumporn and then take the bus to the ferry pier there – then take the ferry to Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and finally to Koh Samui. This is a great option if anyone plans to stop on one of these islands before coming to Koh Samui. By Bus – Have guests traveling this way? Here are a few tips to pass on to them: Take the overnight bus so they arrive at the ferry pier in the morning and just get right on a ferry boat to Samui. Make sure they lock their bags securely – there have always been a few dodgy bus attendants that give the good bus attendants a bad reputation. Bring a good book, iPod/iPad/mp3 player and a small pillow and blanket (or sarong) for comfort. Also, they may want to bring a reading light – it can get dark when everyone else is alseep. The bus will arrive directly at the ferry pier. Once on the ferry boat, it will take about 1 ½ hour to reach Koh Samui.

the koh samui wedding time-line schedule and checklist

12-14 months before Choose your wedding date. The most weddings occur on Koh Samui in February, followed closely by April. The quietest wedding months are from October to the beginning of December. Don't wait too long to reserve your wedding date – it may already be taken Decide on what style of wedding to have; Western, Buddhist - or perhaps underwater? Choose your type of wedding venue. Do you want to be at a resort, remote beach location or a luxury private villa - or maybe a beautiful sailboat or yacht?

Select your bridal party and attendants then ask them to be a part of your special day. Give them plenty of advanced notice so they can arrange to join you overseas Organize a passport (if you do not have one already) or make sure it will still be valid when it comes time to travel to Koh Samui. Get a new passport or apply for additional pages, if needed. If you plan on being in Thailand longer than 30 days, you will need to apply for and purchase a 'Tourist Visa' that is good for 60 days Prepare your budget and review it together. Share this important information with your wedding planner

Pay deposits for wedding planner and venues

Consider your wedding theme. Be creative. Talk to your wedding planner if you have any ideas you would like to share. Send lots of pictures

Will you have a legal marriage, recognized by other nations - or will you have a non-legal ceremony for memories? If one of you has been previously married – certified proof is required – so bring an original or certified copy of all necessary paperwork to show you are legally free to marry. There are services available to assist you with the legal process in Thailand

Prepare your 1st draft of a guest list. Be aware that sometimes every person you invite will want to attend your wedding, and they will make the effort to be there on your wedding day - so make sure your chosen venue can handle up to the amount of guests you invite. Luckily with most weddings, not everyone you invite will attend - but be prepared in case they do

Choose your reception venue. Will it be at the same location as your wedding ceremony?

Samui Bride & Honeymoon

Decide what type of parties and gatherings you will have leading up to your departure to Koh Samui. Will you have an engagement party or just send out announcements?

Have your wedding planner book your caterer

Decide on whether to have a 2nd (or 3rd) party/reception at home for those people who you did not invite to Samui or who were unable to attend

Consider color and overall design

Consider getting a temporary “Wedding Website” that you can make updates and provide info to all your guests. Send each guest a password to access your site and update it regularly

Buy wedding dress. Keep in mind - Koh Samui is a tropical island

10-11 months before

6-7 months before

Finalize your guest list

Join a gift registry, if desired

Send out your invitations. Because this is a destination wedding in a foreign country, give all of your guests as much advance notice about your wedding so they can have ample time to prepare their trip

Get dresses fitted

Decide what kind of ceremony you will have. Will it be religious or secular? On Koh Samui, it is most likely that your wedding planner will select the best person to perform your wedding ceremony based on your needs and preferences unless u make a specific request

Book your entertainment

Email cake photo ideas to your wedding planner

Select Bridesmaids' and flower girl's dresses and accessories

Suggest to the Mothers that they get their dresses, if they haven't already Make sure all current payments have been made to your wedding planner to secure all your necessary vendors and equipment Provide your guests a list of hotels/resorts near your wedding venue once they RSVP - Easy if you have a wedding website to share

Buy wedding insurance in the unlikely event you have to cancel or postpone your wedding on Koh Samui for any reason

5 months before

Discuss what kind of catering you want; BBQ buffet, Sit-down meal or casual family-style?

Draft a seating plan

What kind of entertainment will you have at your reception? Do you want a DJ, fire-dancers, traditional Thai dance performance, fireworks or cabaret show? or maybe some live music? Book your photographer – Talk to your wedding planner about what type of photographer you are looking for. Chances are, they know the perfect one for your wedding Book your videographer - Again ask your wedding planner who they recommend on the island

8-9 months before Book your plane tickets Book your accommodations for your entire journey, not just to Koh Samui, if not included in your wedding package

Finalize flower choices and color theme

Discuss ceremony music; both processional (entry) and recessional (exit) If using an iPod – create several play-lists; PRECEREMONY: starting 1-hour before your ceremony, POST-CEREMONY: for around 3-hours after the service, DINNER: to carry you through your meal and then PARTY: with all your favorite songs. It is worth noting that an iPod requires someone to change the song if it doesn't fit the mood. Hiring a DJ for your wedding night party is more likely to provide you with the atmosphere you desire. A DJ can read the people and play what is necessary to keep your party going and take request Liaise with your DJ or musicians to make sure they know what you are wanting to hear

4 months before Review your budget with your wedding planner to see if still on track

Select your wedding rings, if you haven’t already Decide if the men will tailor their suits on Koh Samui or before they arrive in Thailand Finalize your menu

professional wedding photographers on Koh Samui have photos they are going to suggest taking – but a supplemental list of photos you don't want to live without will make the day more successful by getting exactly what shots you want

Discuss pre-wedding dinners and farewell dinners on Koh Samui. What atmosphere do you want to keep for these special occasions? What kind of food? Ask your wedding planner for their suggestions

Think about speeches; who is going to give them and what you will say to each other and your guests. Many couples write out every word they want to say – while others only jot down a list of topics they will speak about. Whatever your method, keeping them under 10 minutes will be appreciated by your audience, especially if they are waiting for dinner to be served

3 months before

1 month before

Send photos to your wedding planner of the hair and make-up styles you want

Make arrangements for any of your animals at home to be taken care of when you come to Koh Samui

Choose an MC or ask your wedding planner if they can provide someone on Koh Samui

Consider what cocktails and other drinks you will have, both on your wedding day and reception. Special cocktails can really make your guests feel the tropical splendor of Koh Samui Decide if you would like to ask any of your guests to do a reading during your ceremony, then ask them. We do not recommend surprising them the day before your ceremony with a request to participate Discuss adding any family or religious traditions or any alternative ceremonies you would like to perform, such as Hand-fasting or a sand ceremony Create an itinerary of activities and important dates for all your guests from the time they arrive to the time they leave. Some guests will want to do things on their own – but many guests will appreciate you have thought about their enjoyment and join you Order anything printed if you are planning on bringing your own table name cards, seating charts, tent cards, programmes or menus with you. Ask your wedding planner if they can provide this service for you if needed

2 months before Finalize your wedding service and send to your wedding planner. Arrange a time to meet with your celebrant or minister once you’ve settled on Koh Samui

Take out travel insurance for any of those unforeseen events Pick up wedding rings and make sure they are sized properly. Here on Koh Samui, be prepared for your rings to be a little more ‘snug’ in the afternoon than back home Send “Must Have” photo list to your wedding planner Pay final balance with wedding planner so all your services can be confirmed Confirm with your DJ, if you choose to use one, about music for your first dance, cutting of the cake or anything that may require special music Follow-up with any guests you have invited which have not yet sent in their RSVP

3 weeks before Confirm with your wedding planner that everything is on schedule Get final fittings for any dresses or men's clothing you are bringing with you to Thailand

2 weeks before Give flight details to wedding planner about arrival on Koh Samui so transportation can be waiting for you

Coordinate with your wedding planner when the ceremony rehearsal will be held

Finalize final guest list and pass this information to your wedding planner

Prepare a “Must Have” photo list to ensure you get all the photos you want, while spending less time getting them done. All the

Finalize dinner seating plan and send to your wedding planner

Exercise often – it helps your body and mind stay relaxed and focused Pack all necessary items for your trip; passports, itineraries, other important documents, any printed material, suits, dresses and all your accessories

1 week before If you are planning on legally marrying in Thailand, you will need to arrive in Bangkok between 5 and 7 business days before your wedding date. If you choose to use a legal liaison service to assist you, you will likely only need 1 morning in Bangkok and the hired service will do the rest on your behalf. But it will still take several business days (weekends and holidays not included) to complete your documents in Bangkok and have them sent down to Koh Samui in time for your wedding day Now that you are in Thailand, you both should go get Traditional Thai massages. Try Wat Po on the Chao Phraya River, a well-respected massage training school located at the same temple as the “Reclining Buddha”

3-5 days before Meet with your wedding planner and confirm all decisions made over the planing process. Give planner any items you will be using on your wedding day such as programmes, tent cards, seating plans, etc. Meet with celebrant or minister to discuss your final ceremony selection Perform a rehearsal with the wedding party participants. If someone has not arrived yet, use a substitute to keep continuity Get another massage. At least once per day is our recommendation while on Koh Samui Meet with guests, enjoy you time on Koh Samui. When you have the right person planning your wedding – there is no need for you to do anything else but relax Enjoy a tasting of your wedding dinner, canapes and specialty drinks you have selected

2 days before Have a trial with your hair and make-up artist Have a massage. Try oil or aromatherapy this time

Have your Stag-Do and Hens Night. It is not recommended having them the night before your wedding

1 day before Sleep off the previous night’s fun Eat a good breakfast (and/or lunch – depending on when you wake up). You'll both need a lot of energy the next couple days Have another massage Enjoy a pre-wedding dinner Go to sleep early

wedding day Wake up refreshed Eat a good breakfast to get you going Get a massage to relax you for the big event The women get ready with the hair and make-up artists Wedding planner visits the bride in her room When the photographers/videographers arrive, they will take a lot of photos of you getting ready The men get ready and arrive around 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony The guests arrive 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony and mingle with the groom and his groomsmen Your wedding planner will inform the guests to be seated before ceremony starts Celebrant or minister is ready to conduct the service The service begins...

post-ceremony Sign your wedding certificate. If you have opted for a legal service, the local “Amphur” (Registrar) will be present to sign your final documents and marriage certificate after the service. If you are not having a legal service, you can choose to sign a keepsake certificate to commemorate your wedding day Open Champagne and share with all your guests

Get a group photo while everyone is present, just after the ceremony concludes While photos are being taken, open the bar so guests can eat delicious canapes and mingle Take special photos of only the two of you walking along the beach Cut your wedding cake, but serve it after dinner. Photographs on the beach of you cutting your cake will be nicer than cutting it later at night and not being able to see the ocean in the background

Depending on how many speeches you are planning, it is a good idea to spread them out throughout dinner Serve the cake after dinner Enjoy your 1st dance as a married couple. Let the other guests join you about 30 seconds into the song If you are planning for any fireworks, for safety purposes, many places do not allow you to set them off until after 10pm when the last planes arrive and depart Koh Samui

Toss your bouquet at sunset to all the unmarried woman

Party until you can't any more, or untill you are allowed to at your venue

Light fire-balloons just after sunset, before you are supposed to sit down for dinner, unless prohibited from letting them off until after 10pm

Offer your flower decorations to any guests who want to take some back to their room

wedding night (reception) After festivities are finished on the beach, your guests will be invited to find where they are sitting at dinner and go to their tables You will then be introduced by the MC of the evening as you go to your table. It is a good place to have a few speeches then open the dinner so everyone can eat. Often, the Father-of-the-Bride is the 1st to give a speech, at this time followed by the best man and then the groom – but here on Koh Samui, you can do it any way you'd like

Say good night and go to Congratulations on your big day!

"The World Seemed Perfect..." For their wedding, Lauren & Daniel were looking for something different. With family and friends scattered around the world in places such as England and South Africa, they knew that having a wedding in Australia would not work for them. For this young couple, Thailand seemed like the perfect place for everyone to meet half-way. Lauren & Daniel shared their experience of planning a destination wedding from overseas. Lauren said, "With the help of our wedding planner, it was effortless. All I had to do was let her know what my expectations were by sending through pictures of bouquets, ceremony set-ups, etc. and to be honest, she exceeded them. We definitely recommend using a wedding planner who has local knowledge and is located on the island." Daniel added, "We had the most beautiful backdrop imaginable and for the whole day the world seemed perfect. As first-time visitors to Koh Samui our expectations were surpassed." "Our guests themselves", Lauren explained, "were enjoying a relaxing holiday in the warmth and happy island atmosphere on Koh Samui. The mood was light and congenial and the guests picked-up on the easy-going nature of the day. There were many comments on the simplicity and tenderness of the ceremony which left a few guests teary-eyed."

They both agreed, "We would undoubtedly recommend Koh Samui as the ideal wedding location for any couple hoping for a stress-free and tranquil experience on their special wedding day. Who could ask for more than a tropical setting, a sparkling ocean, palm trees and glorious warm weather?"

The final day of the 1st Annual Koh Samui Wedding Cake-Off 2012 was held at the Chaweng Regent Beach Resort in Chaweng Beach and they did a truly fantastic job in hosting a fun event. Best All-Round 3-Day Cake Chef: Chef Chaitawat “Bob Rabiabaot (Silavadee)

Meet Chef Chaitawat "Bob" Rabiabaot

The Top Winner of the 1st Annual Koh Samui Wedding Cake-Off 2012! We caught up with Chef Bob at Silavadee Pool Spa Resort in Lamai where he works as the Head Pastry Chef. While Chef Bob is tall, talented and creative - and has a winning smile - he is very reserved and speaks limited English, so through a lovely translator I asked him a few questions about the contest, being a chef and Koh Samui. Samui Bride & Honeymoon: Thank you for taking the time to meet me. Congratulations for winning the 1st Annual Koh Samui Wedding Cake-Off 2012! How does it feel to be the best wedding cake creator on the island? Chef Bob: I am very happy. When I first entered I thought my cakes would be the worst. Now I am very confident and since I am young I can still learn and develop my skills more. SB&H: Where are you originally from and how long have you been on Koh Samui? CB: I am from Nakorn Si Thammarat but I have been living on Koh Samui for more than 8 years. SB&H: How long have you been a pastry chef? CB: I have been a pastry chef for 2 years, most of that time here at Silavadee. Before that I just worked in a bakery for around 5 years. SB&H: What do you like best about being a pastry chef? CB: I like to be creative. Being able to make cakes gives me a lot of freedom to use my imagination and create something that can go beyond what a wedding couple would expect. I also like to be artistic, so I really like my job. SB&H: Anything couples should know about getting their wedding cake on Koh Samui? CB: When I meet with couples I like to know what flavor, icing, color theme, shape and overall vision they want their cake to represent. Then I ask them if they are specific about a design or if they will allow me creative freedom to make an amazing cake for them. As a Chef, being creative is something we all enjoy but I can certainly try to replicate any photos that couples would like to share. SB&H: Any final thoughts for couples reading this magazine? CB: Some cakes can require a lot of time to construct so make sure you give us plenty of time to prepare. Come see me on Koh Samui so we can discuss your options. I look forward to making your wedding cake dreams come true... SB&H: Thank you, Chef Bob, for your valuable time. We wish you the best for a bright and successful future. Buddhist Weddings

String, conch shells, chants, incense – would you like a Buddhist wedding? By Dimitri Waring

Who doesn’t appreciate a sense of adventure? Relish the thought of doing something quite different? And doing it in a totally different way? If you’ve decided to get married in Thailand, it’s already an exotic choice; it’s already going to provide you with a day that’s going to be original and something to look back on. Even months in advance, you'll feel glad that you made the decision to break with all usual traditions and get married abroad. You'd be quite right to wonder if you could possibly have a more exotic day, ever. Probably, though, your wedding is going to be westernstyle – most couples who choose Thailand and Koh Samui as their wedding destination opt for this. Many people will be a little bit wary of choosing a Thai ceremony. Who wouldn’t be cautious? – after all, it’ll be in a foreign language, involves customs that are completely different and which may turn out to be completely bewildering. And many will ask if it’s even possible: don’t you have to be a Buddhist? Those that do opt for a Buddhist-style ceremony find that the customs, while unfamiliar, are all symbolic and it’s easy to understand just what those symbols mean. The language

42

Samui Bride & Honeymoon

is partly in Pali – the chanting of the monks is done in this ancient language – which few Thais understand anyway. Luckily, you don’t need to reply to the chants or even repeat any of them. And, no, you don’t have to be a Buddhist to partake. So it turns out to be quite possible, after all, to have a Buddhist wedding and the fact is that a growing number of foreign couples coming to Thailand opt to have a Buddhist ceremony (or at least part of one) on their wedding day. By now, you'll probably be asking what actually happens? First of all, apart from a few dos-and-dont's it’ll be a very relaxed, laid-back affair and you'll be guided along every step of the way. There are many variations to a typical Thai wedding. There are regional differences and it also depends on what the bride and groom decide they want. There's no one-size-fits-all formula. Saffron-robed monks conduct the ceremonies and they're happy to do so for those who know next to nothing about Buddhism. This isn’t because they're lax, but because Buddhism is extremely tolerant and welcomes people of all, or no, faith.

On the wedding day, monks come to where you are to be married, usually a beach-side hotel, bringing with them all that they will need. The first thing you'll notice about a Buddhist wedding is how atmospheric it is. Incense drifts through the air and candles are lit to mark the special ceremony and the monks begin their chanting, a peaceful and mesmerizing sound. They are chanting blessings; chanting with the intention that your marriage may be a fulfilling and successful one. As a couple, you'll be asked to kneel before them, facing the monks. Both bride and groom hold their hands up, palms together in the traditional wai. For those who witness this, it’s a moving sight. For you, the couple, even if you can’t follow the words of the chant, it feels auspicious, a good start to your marriage. The only discomfort may be in having to kneel during the chanting, so it’s important to make sure there are plenty of cushions. What happens next may seem strange. The head monk takes a ball of string and it’s draped around the heads of both of you. This is to demonstrate your attachment to each other, that you're committed to living and sharing with each other. Next comes a seemingly universal tradition: you're sprinkled with holy water in a blessing.

beach, not because there’s something wrong with beaches or swimming, but because they have taken vows that set them on a different path. Once you’ve understood a few simple-to-grasp ideas, you won’t find yourself making any etiquette faux pas. You'll be able to relax and enjoy what’s happening. A Buddhistwedding ceremony is a wonderful experience. Perhaps the only drawback to it all is that you'll enjoy it so much you'll want to repeat the experience – but there’s nothing stopping you from renewing your vows a few years hence. NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: An authentic Buddhist marriage ceremony/blessing is something few couples will ever experience, especially since the ceremony is usually held in the early morning. Here on Koh Samui, couples can choose to hold a marriage blessing in the afternoon to easily combine with any other services your are having. Ask your wedding planner to add this unique ceremony to your western wedding – and add the “Rod Naam Song” (Thai Water Blessing) as well. You can invite a minimum of three monks up to a maximum of nine for the most abundant blessings. You will be happy you participated in such a special and unforgettable event.

Following this, you thank the monks by giving them presents. Each monk is given gifts, which should include useful items as well as a donation, with the head monk receiving the gifts of greatest value. The monks depart after this. In Thai society the wedding continues throughout the afternoon, with a respected person from the village or town acting as master of ceremonies. This won’t be possible in your case and instead you'll probably choose to have a convivial gathering of some kind along with your guests, but whatever happens, something that’s abidingly important comes next: the water blessing. The guests all line up and as each comes and stands before you, they are given a conch shell, filled with water, which they pour over your hands. As they do so, they offer you their best wishes for your life together. It’s a gentle ceremony and again can be very moving. Many couples are now choosing to have both a Buddhist and a western wedding ceremony, the one being seamlessly integrated into the other. The monks chant their blessings and then a western ceremony is held, along with an exchange of vows and ending with the couple giving each other rings. A mixture of the two ceremonies works surprisingly well and never seems to be just a bizarre clash of cultures. As you can see, a Buddhist-style wedding can have many variations and it’s up to you, the bride and groom to explore just what you'd like to include in your ceremony. A good wedding planner should be able to provide both advice and ideas. He or she should certainly explain all that you need to know in terms of etiquette. How, for example, a monk is not allowed to make any physical contact with a woman. Monks, traditionally, do not go down onto the Samui Bride & Honeymoon

Where To Go And What To Do

When someone mentions a “Stag-Do” or “Hen's Party”, often images of drunken excess and come to mind – thanks to movies like The Hangover 2. Koh Samui has plenty to do after the sun goes down so the only thing we'll say about the night-life on Koh Samui is; be responsible for yourself and don't check your brain at the gate upon arrival. There are a lot things you just wouldn't do at home – so don't do them here. There is plenty of fun to be had while remaining respectful to the locals and other foreigners. On Koh Samui, more often than not, these traditional rites-of-passage are held during the day rather than night. There is so much to do here that it can be exhausting. For the men – fun with the boys is often; Quad Biking, Zip Lines, Scuba Diving, Golfing, Rock Climbing & Repelling, Go-Karting, Football Golf, Fishing, Private Speed Boat Trips, Elephant Trekking and Bungee-Jumping. For the ladies – their parties are often; Spa Treatments, Snorkeling Trips, Massages, Manicures & Pedicures, Cooking Classes, Sailing, Elephant Treks, Shopping and Island Tours. Though there are a lot more times now when the ladies want to be more adventurous than the boys and the boys want to be thoroughly pampered. No matter what your personal style is, Koh Samui is full of great things to do with your family and friends – and especially with each other.

Who doesn't like to be pampered? Even most men would agree that being massaged into deep relaxation and groomed to perfection feels wonderful. And I have never met a woman who doesn't want a day at the spa... When it comes to your wedding day, a hens party or having a romantic honeymoon retreat, Koh Samui's spas deliver a complete balance of service and relaxation for any occasion. Spa treatments have taken off around the world and there are a variety available on Koh Samui – from simple Thai massage to all-inclusive award-winning wellness retreats. Being relaxed on your wedding day has it's obvious advantages; being more aware of what is happening around you, being able to enjoy the day even more, keeping the stress levels to a minimum and making your overall mood upbeat and happy. And let's face it – it's your wedding day so you are supposed to make the most of it! Spa treatments have also been know to be very therapeutic. They relax muscles and free toxins that get

A great treatment will loosen your body so all tensions from the real world can be released and melt away. Their aromatic pleasures can penetrate deep into the body to caress your soul into exultation. A relaxing spa day is also a great way to spend time together with some of your wedding guests, family or to enjoy during a traditional Hen Party – or even a stag-do! Complete spa days can be arranged to cater to and delight every sense you posses. Why not encourage everyone to take advantage of this amazing service while visiting the Kingdom of Thailand? Compared to most other countries a typical day at the spa can be very expensive. Even with our global economy in disarray, a day at the spa on Koh Samui is reasonably priced and service is second-to-none. Take the time to visit one of Koh Samui's spas – you will be thankful you did – and so will everyone that goes with you.

dental tips for brides & grooms Everyone wants to have the perfect smile on their wedding day. There is no doubt it can make your photographs extraordinary when you are beaming with confidence. Here are a few tips to help brighten your smile on your big day. Eat fresh, crisp apples. They help to naturally clean your teeth and make them stronger. Avoid sugar-laden foods that can weaken your teeth. Processed sugar is known to be one of the most damaging products for your body. (Yes, we know they taste sooooo good!)

Use a stain fighting/removing toothpaste to help combat stains. Some are better than others. Ask your dentist what they recommend. A few days before your wedding, visit a dentist to whiten your teeth with a safe and proven method. They can help make a very noticeable difference in under 1 hour. Koh Samui has this important service available for very reasonable prices. Give yourself, and your partner, the time to brighten your smiles and radiate in your wedding day photos. Make an appointment to illuminate your smile, and ultimately your future, with Dr. Sanicha.

Try to avoid coffee and tea a week before your big day. Both can compound stains on your teeth. Brush twice daily - or more.
