HELLO

I’m Sam. I created Solution in 2016 as a professional brand identity. Since my 2017 portfolio I’ve graduated with a first class honours in Graphic Design and worked at an award winning design consultancy in Leeds. I have also undertaken freelance work with new clients and I’m currently working independently on graphic design projects nationally.

I deal with my own clients and correspond in a clear, informative manner.

My portfolio is comprised of freelance projects, university assignments and work from EatFishDesign. I’m enthusiastic about my craft and want to be given more opportunities to be creative and work with my peers to improve and grow as a professional. I am still hungry for a more permanent role in the Graphic Design industry, so I am actively looking for a full time position.

Samuel is a great designer and also very good at managing his clients with patience and diplomacy. He designed a new logo pro bono for our charity network group, with which we are delighted. I recommend his work to you.

Karen Addington CEO - JDRF UK

We communicated with Samuel remotely, mainly by email, and I can confirm that he interpreted our requests excellently and returned his designs in advance of all deadlines. I therefore have no hesitation in recommending him as someone who can work independently and produce high quality work with little supervision. I have no doubt that he will make an splendid addition to your organisation!

Gillian Parsons Fife Cultural Trust

We would definitely recommend Sam to future clients. I feel that Sam takes on board the needs of his clients in order to create imaginative designs, which can be applied to a range of products.

solutiongd.org/portfolio/crit-me/ Crit-me, a design criticism community, is devoted to helping young, inexperienced designers understand the importance of criticism and how to use it effectively. Crit-me also aims to create a more well rounded community focused on collaboration and connectivity. I decided to create Crit-me because I believe there is a lack of access to effective criticism online. To counteract this I created a community that is devoted to improving a designers practice through criticism, which would help users gain confidence and also give them vital experience in dealing with criticism effectively. My final outcome was a website mockup and ‘community consensus’ a criticism tool that lets the user react to digital content using 8 different icons. I coded both using Processing, a javascript application that was previously unknown to me at the start of the year. As a way of documenting my project I also created 10 research & development booklets which included VOID my special study on learning to code from scratch and creating a fully functioning rating system. I exhibited the project at the Final Year Show along with an opportunity for the attendees to critique my project using stickers and three risograph prints (see my website for images). I also exhibited Crit-me in London at the D&AD New Blood Festival 2018.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

EXHIBITION - FREELANCE - 2019

Let There Be Light is a series of exhibitions on the life and work of philantrhopist Andrew Carnegie. The first of which; Remembering a local hero takes place at Rothes Hall in Fife. Working with Fife Cultural Trust I created an exciting, informative exhibition that remembers Carnegie and what he achieved 100 years on from his death. The first exhibition contains 10 boards that follow the incredible story of his life and his unique approach to wealth and pilanthropy. The second exhibition will focus on a number of the 147 libraries he personally funded in Scotland, while Unseen Carnegies will include painted portraits of Andrew Carnegie and his family. Where you can catch the exhibitions: 13th April - 5th June 2019 - Remembering a Local Hero at Rothes Hall 29th June - 7th September 2019 - Carnegie Libraries in Scotland at Lochgelly Centre 3rd August - 20th October 2019 - Unseen Carnegies at the DCLG Community Gallery

EATFISHDESIGN

VARIOUS - PART TIME JOB - 2018/19

I worked at EatFishDesign as a part time Junior Graphic Designer for 9 months. EatFishDesign is a design consultancy based in Leeds. The company specialises in translating technically complex products and services to the end-user in a visually engaging way, allowing the technical content to be accessible to a larger audience. I started working there in October and have been involved in a variety of interesting projects; ranging from building websites on WordPress to infographics on Illustrator. I have also been working on updating their online social media presence by creating eye catching content and writing and uploading new case studies to their website. I thoroughly enjoyed working for EFD and have already learnt so much from working there. My role within the company varies everyday and that diverse workload has really helped me grow and improve as a designer as I’m learning new processes and skills. I’m also learning more about what it means to run and maintain a company in the design industry. eatfishdesign.com

Logbooks

REDWALL PLACEMENT - LOG - 2016 / 17 I spent my placement year at Redwall and I was encouraged to keep a log of my work. I thought I’d use it as an opportunity to present my work in a light, easy to understand format so that it could be flicked through. I wanted the layout to be consistent across all the logs with a unique front cover to distinguish them. The further into the year the more experimental I became with the covers. Once inside the logs the work is split into four categories: Redwall jobs Freelance design Image making Experiments This helped me colour code the work to make it easier to navigate and more colourful. They were great fun to produce and to actually document a years worth of work got me used to hitting deadlines and pushing the boundaries of my design practice. Working at Redwall was a wonderful experience that helped me understand more about the career and role I am striving to achieve. solutiongd.org/portfolio/placement-logbooks

JDRF UK

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS POSTER - FREELANCE - 2016 JDRF is a diabetes charity that focuses on children with diabetes and spreading awareness about type 1. They also feel it’s important that we know what the differences are between both types, while working on a cure & funding research. JDRF had an outdated signs and symptoms poster that they felt could incorporate the brand and be better at relaying important information about recognising type 1 diabetes while also being eye catching and colourful. It was a valuable experience as I was able to work with JDRF’s brand guidelines to keep the poster consistent with their brand. The poster is available for download on JDRF’s website: jdrf.org.uk/for-professionals/resources-healthcare-professionals/

CHARITY NETWORK GROUP - FREELANCE - 2017 I started a freelance project, working with Karen Addington, CEO of JDRF because she was looking for a new logo for her peer support group for women leaders in the charitable sector. Because of my previous work for JDRF I was recommended to create some concepts for them. “Bia” refers to the greek goddess of power and leadership but Karen was struggling to find the appropriate imagery to reference her. So I set about creating a few different concepts. After responding to their comments and going through a few iterations I was able to create a concept they were happy with. “Samuel is a great designer and also very good at managing his clients with patience and diplomacy. He designed a new logo pro bono for our charity network group, with which we are delighted. I recommend his work to you.” solutiongd.org/portfolio/bia/

GRAPHIC BADGES - FREELANCE - 2019

W4D have delivered creative design services to the fashion and textile sector for over 12 years. I was approached to design and create badges to be included in Styleright’s Sports publication for Spring 2021. I was given two initial briefs from Styleright so they could gage my style and ability, they were impressed with my work and subsequently allocated me four badge designs for their Sports active trend book. Responding to two different briefs again; Trekking: Protect and Survive & Cycling: All Terrain I created two badges for men and two for women. The work was well received and I will be working with Styleright again for their Spring/Summer 2021 Kidswear trend book.
