September 22, 2021 Emergency Management Director Harper Potts Covid 19 update. Harper Potts: Good afternoon everyone. In Maskwacis today we have 2367 Total Cases. Total Recovered is 2280 cases. 2 are Hospitalized. There are 85 Total Active cases.

and Moderna. Phizer is for the youth but adults can take it too if they want. Come get vaccinated even if your not from Samson. As long as you’re a four band member we can accommodate you. The isolation/quarantine trailers are up and running. People who have to go through contact tracing can apply. If someone in your home gets Covid 19 you can isolate at the Samson trailers. The trailers at Ermineskin will always be there but our trailers are there for our people if they want. Harper talks about the Medicine Chest clause in Treaty and how it benefits us today. That’s how far those Elders looked ahead.

Currently we have 85 Active Cases, 30 are from Samson, out of those 85 41 were non-vaccinated. 23 out of those 85 were under the age of 12. 16 out of those 85 were Double Vaccinated. 7 out of those 85 had One Vaccine administered.

There’s a question on how to get your Alberta vaccine card. It’s online and you need your health care number. Bring you card to our office at the old Kasohkowew building and we will laminate it for you. You may have to show your card if you want to go eat somewhere or if you want to go see a movie. Harper talks about his friend who talks about what is in the vaccine. His friend got double vaccinated but he didn’t know what’s in there. His friend trusted his doctor when he said it was needed.

Alberta had on September 21, 2021: 20,614 Active Cases. On September 17 Alberta had 1605 Active Cases. On September 19 Alberta had 1432 Active Cases. We’re slowly going up there in numbers.

I just want to encourage people to get vaccinated. Even if your not from Samson, as long as you’re a four band member come get vaccinated at the HBMC. Let’s continue to pray for the people in the trailers, the people in Calgary and Edmonton. With that have a good evening and we will see you on the next posting. Hai Hai !

Total Vaccines administered at the HBMC: 2785. Out of those 2785, 2017 were from Samson. 4500 people in Samson have been vaccinated but we still need 2300 people more to reach that 70% vaccination rate to be safe. There are 835 Active Cases in 46 First Nations. In Maskwacis we have 85 Active Cases. In Alberta for September 21, 954 people are Hospitalized. 216 are Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Alberta is back to Level 2. Restrictions are coming in. Harper got into an eating establishment but some of his friends did not because they did not have their Alberta vaccine card. In Samson we are up to 50 or 60 homes that are under quarantine or contact tracing. Continue to pray for these people. There are two people from Samson in Edmonton hospitals. One is on life support and the other has breathing conditions. Our band members are out there but they are falling under Alberta statistics. In Treaty 6 we are at a 36% vaccination rate. The lowest out of all the Treaty areas. In Samson we continue to do home delivery for our members. The line up to get vaccinated at the Maskwacis Ambulance Authority building can take up to two hours but it’s worth it. If we didn’t have the vaccines here we would probably have to go to Camrose or Red Deer. In Maskwacis, we have a total population of approximately 18,000 people. 13,000 are living on the reserve. 9100 people need to be vaccinated to reach that 70% safe rate. Currently, 4413 people are vaccinated. That’s roughly 48%. Maskwacis needs another 4700 band members vaccinated or 52% more. 1 dose given to 1277 people and 3136 have two doses. We are going down in numbers for people coming out to get the vaccine. Thursday September 23, we are open at the HBMC from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, we have both Phizer 8

September 9, 2021 Samson Cree Nation: The Integrated Family Services (IFS) had their annual Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) walk from 3 mile to the rest area near the Maskwacis RCMP building. There were a lot of walkers this year and past Samson Chief Victor Buffalo was among them. Councilors Ryan Lightning and Louise Omeasoo welcomed everyone at kick off and Wilson Okeymow sang a song. The Maskwacis RCMP participated and they walked the whole way and they handed out bottles of water at the end point. Annette Cutknife told her story about living with someone with FASD and that there needs to be more programs and services for them in the community. She also mentioned that alcohol is not good at all in a persons life because of the problems it causes. Tanya Heyden Kaye who was running for the federal election for our area was present. Tanya lost the vote and got 14% of the vote. Thank you to the walkers for participating and the organizers for the work.

Truth and Reconciliation Day September 30, 2021 Please be Warned the following article maybe a Trigger about Residential Schools. Source: www.indigenoustourism.ca/travel-stories/truth-and-reconciliation-day-september-30

September 22, 2021 Source: Bonnie McCloud, Samson Community Wellness Facebook page.

“Truth and Reconciliation day is this September 30th. This day has been legislated as a federal statutory holiday and is a call for reflection and action.... September 30 is also known as Orange Shirt Day. A day created after residential school survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad, a shared her story at a St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School Commemoration Project and Reunion event held in Williams Lake, British Columbia, in 2013. At the age of 6, Phyllis attended residential school and on the her first day, was stripped of her new orange shirt that her grandmother had bought her. Orange Shirts now symbolizes how the residential school system took away the Indigenous identities of its students.”

The community is invited to attend the Samson Community Wellness Orange Shirt Day: In Spirit of Hope and Reconciliation on Wednesday September 29 and Thursday September 30, 2021. From 9 AM to 3 PM behind the Willowview Building. The event will include guest speakers who will share their personal experience with Residential Schools and Reconciliation, 60s Scoop. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Exploited Peoples (MMIEP), and on Orange Shirt Day a intergenerational walk to honour the more than 4000 children who died, and the sacrifices that were made by Residential School survivors and their families across Canada. Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for Indigenous Peoples, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. This event is free and open to all members of the community. Give a ways, lunch and refreshments and a community Feast Drive Through will be provided. Covid 19 Protocols will be in place.
