ABOUT

I love the feeling that comes from great design. And not necessarily just well-designed interiors, but interesting architecture, funky fashion, sleek cars, manicured landscapes and anything else that can inspire, be it man-made or natural. We seldom focus on how deeply our surroundings impact our life experience. People, places, our own endeavors, these are transitional, but our environments are constant. Our homes and ofices, our neighborhoods and cities shape our lives as rivers shape landscapes. Thus the nature and design of our spaces should be immersive and conducive, impressive, vibrant and functional.

Design as an interest, began early in my life. My mother was an interior designer. As a child I would watch her design, visit clients houses and go to design centers and furniture stores with her. My childhood home was an ever-evolving showcase for her design talents with beautiful furnishings and lush fabrics and accessories. She encouraged my interest by allowing me to help and by letting me redecorate my room over and over. So, for me, interior design was a natural choice. I respect the affect that an environment has on its occupants, I have an innate understanding of design, color and proportion, and, I believe, the talent and passion for this profession.

I spent the irst year of my undergraduate degree studying abroad in London at American Intercontinental University (now Regent’s University). My family had lived near London in 2005, and during that time I developed a love for England and its’ culture. In addition to an excellent introduction to interior architecture and design, while at AIU, I served as the interior design representative to the student council.

In 2012, I enrolled at the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID). During my three years at NYSID I made the Dean’s List each semester. Upon completing my course of study I graduated irst in my class with High Honors and a GPA of 3.90. I was also the recipient of the Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program.

During my time at NYSID, I was active in the student chapter of ASID, serving for a time as the Committee Chair and Marketing Director.

In my senior year, I was featured in several publications about up and coming NYSID graduates. I was also appointed as one of four students to represent NYSID at DIFFA’s Annual Dining by Design event. While a student team winner was not announced for 2016, the NYSID booth was featured in publications such as the April 2016 Interior Design Magazine and Architectural Digest.

Outside of school, I was also fortunate enough to work for Kenneth Park Architects (KPA). Following a mock design project for Tourneau, I was contacted by KPA, which is Tourneau’s architecture irm. Members of the irm had reviewed my work on the design project and I was offered a summer internship. Shortly after my arrival at KPA I was elevated to permanent membership on one of the irm’s design teams and over the next eighteen months I worked on numerous high-end retail, hospitality and residential design projects.

At the end of my formal schooling, I am excited to embark on my professional journey. According to my professors and employers I have a proiciency for retail and hospitality design, and, certainly, I enjoy this segment of commercial design immensely. However, I also look forward to the challenge of learning and practicing other types of design too. I am currently working on NCIDQ testing and am looking forward to the process to become a certiied designer.

The Renewal Center

Healing the bodies, hearts and minds of wounded soldiers through traditional sports medicine, physical and alternative therapies in a purpose-designed facility. The spirit of the Renewal Center is a holistic approach to the rehabilitation of our soldiers. The built environment is a key part of the success of the program and the design of the center should relect that. The center was designed with sustainability in mind at all times. Sustainable and renewable materials, daylighting, indoor air quality, and energy eficiency were important considerations in the design of the Renewal Center.

The over-arching inspiration for the project came from the Japanese art of kintsugi; the act of repairing broken pottery with gold or silver. As a philosophy, kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to be disguised. Japanese aesthetics value marks of wear by the use of the object. This can be seen as a rationale for keeping an object even after it has been broken, and as a justiication for kintsugi itself. It highlights the cracks and repairs as simply an event in the life of an object, rather than allowing its service to end at the time that it is damaged or broken. Translated into the life of a soldier, the physical scars are badges of honor for a life of service to their country. Life is more beautiful for having been broken. The imperfect is perfect.

The concepts of biophilia and kintsugi were translated into the physical environment through the use of materials, as well as the spacial planning and architectural features of the space. Live plants were introduced into the interior to promote better indoor air quality and the overall theme of holistic healing and new growth. While visuals of kintsugi can be seen in elements such as the ive story feature wall in the lobby that merges the ideas of beauty in imperfections with new growth.

PROJECT STATEMENT At war for more than ifteen years, the United States military has suffered enormous casualties. Oficials estimate that today more than 400,000 soldiers suffer from PTSD, 320,000 have traumatic brain injuries, and another 52,000 soldiers have sustained severe physical injuries or have required amputations. Untreated these injuries can result in life-long debilitation.

The Renewal Center focuses on the rehabilitation of wounded veterans through the use of traditional, physical and mental treatment modalities combined with innovative therapies such as music, art, animal-assisted therapy and programs of Activities of Daily Living. Uniquely, the Center also seeks to employ the physical design of the facility as an active component in the therapeutic program.

Generally, stress is a psycho-physiological response to stressors. Stressors can be internal, external, acute or chronic. All stressors affect mental, physical, and social well-being. Wounded soldiers in particular experience persistent stress from physical trauma, PTSD and the loss or impairment of bodily functions. Physical environments can contribute to individual stress. The design concept for this facility seeks to minimize environmental stressors for patients, and to promote healing through its use of space, materials and furnishings.

That a built environment can have a serious impact on the physical, emotional and social well-being of the occupants is an exceedingly important factor in the development of the Renewal Center. PTSD patients are hyper-aware. Traumatic stress can be triggered by the simplest action, event or environmental factor. Also patient health will respond positively or negatively, depending on the type of environment in which they are being treated.

Design, color, daylighting, ambient sound, privacy, access to nature and many other considerations are important in the design of a rehabilitative environment.

Because the Renewal Center intends to use traditional and innovative treatment modalities, the space programming for the Center is especially challenging. Exercise zones, a running track, natatorium, spa, examination and treatment rooms, and pseudo-residential spaces must be integrated with space for alternative therapies which support art, music and animal-assisted programs. In addition, the facility design values the integration of nature, natural light, and openness as key design elements.

The Who Cares Treatment & Community Center represents an innovative proposal

for an age-targeted cancer treatment facility within the Teen Cancer America program. The objective is to offer teenage cancer patients a setting which is designed to resonate with teens, while hosting a irst-class cancer treatment facility. Who Cares caters to the social and emotional needs of its patients by creating an expressive environment that fosters peerto-peer support and treatment augmentation through social interaction between patients.

Adolescent and young adult cancer patients suffer signiicantly more depression, emotional distress and social isolation that other patient age groups. Based on recent research studies, the design introduces art therapy as a treatment modality. Evoking the creative spirit of the patient, art has been proven as an effective treatment for depression and emotional stress.

In order to reach isolated teens who are under extreme duress, the facility design focuses on grafiti as an art form. Generally considered a counter-cultural, anger-inspired art form, grafiti appeals to young cancer patients in a way that no other art form can. Teen patients with life-threatening illnesses often experience anger and struggle to express their fear and helplessness. Grafiti and other art forms allows patients to express their anger and release stress in socially acceptable ways.

Drawn in by an art form which resonates, patients experience this striking and thoughtful form of art as a creative outlet and therapeutic tool. To complete the connection between facility and patients, the Who Cares center design doesn’t just provide a space for art, the art is infused in the design itself. The geometry of the grafiti is relected in the building layout. The colors of urban art make up the facilities color palette, and the furnishings and architectural inishes all create a sensory connection to the theme.

Tourneau, the largest U.S. watch retailer for more than a century, occupies a unique place in the jewelry retail market. Authorized dealers of signature brands such as Rolex, Longines TAGHeuer, Cartier and Brietling, Tourneau is the watch destination for the world’s most discerning customers. In order to appeal to the mostly male clientele, the design of the store in New York City’s Bryant Park focuses on providing a luxury retail experience with a masculine appeal.

Inspired by the mechanics of the watch, the loor plan is a series of radiating curves that are a translation of a deconstructed timepiece. Tourneau’s signature materials of warm walnut wood and satin inished bronze, give the store a warm contemporary aesthetic. Spotlights in a sweeping bronze ceiling ixture evoke a combination of a watch bezel and index marks on traditional watch faces. White product display stands provide the perfect contrast to the gold, silver brown and black colors of the timepieces and add eye-catching layers to the display cases.

Fueled Collective is a developer of lifestyle mobile applications. The design for the Fueled ofices required a unique combination of corporate ofice, co-working space, meeting facilities and real-world product test environments. This branch of the Fueled Collective specializes in mobile apps that relate to personal itness, cooking and gardening. This broad range of interest-areas required a diverse spacial design which includes a screening room, workout facilities, a test kitchen and garden.

In addition to the screening room, workout facilities, test kitchen and garden, the design program also includes a cafe, lounge and gaming area for employee use. This type of program promotes a more relaxed and creative working environment.

The design for the ofice space uses materials and architectural features that evoke the idea of an industrial warehouse. Sustainability was supported by reusing existing site materials, as well as reclaimed wood and metals. A largely open loor plan with a central gathering zone increased the opportunity for employee interaction and collaboration.

DIFFA’s (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) Dining by Design event, held annually in March, invites local and international designers to transform a raw space into a showcase of over-the-top dining environments for its annual fund raiser for HIV/AIDS. Co-located with the Architectural Digest Design Show, DIFFA’s signature event gathers thousands of supporters at Pier 92 in New York City to fund-raise for a cause.

Action = Life | A dynamic geometry, the triangle represents the three most important characteristics of a ighter - strength, courage and perseverance. The triangles shape an environment that reminds us of the importance of ighting for those affected by HIV & AIDS.

Led by faculty advisor Rene Estacio, this installation was a team-designed project, representing the New York School of Interior Design at DIFFA’s Dining by Design 2016 event. Working with a budget of just $2500, the NYSID team designed and constructed every element from the plywood walls, to the crafting and installation of the cardboard triangles, and the creation of the laser-cut acrylic tableware.

DIFFA did not select a winning design for 2016, but the NYSID entry was featured in Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest and Architizer.

I N S T A L L A T I O N | Educational Pop-Up

The DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) mission is to raise awareness and to grant funds for treatment, direct care service, offer preventive education programs and advocacy for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. To further this mission, these Educational Pop-Ups are installed at DIFFA events and serve the dual purpose of education and fundraising. Utilizing videos, graphic information panels and interactive touch screen stations, viewers learn about the history and mission of DIFFA. The pop-ups also provide preventive education about HIV/AIDS and its worldwide impact. A central shopping area also sells featured products representing different design disciplines. The funds, raised through sales are donated to DIFFA supported organizations.

The dynamic curving shape and the use of bright red are inspired by the Red Ribbon. The icon of the Ribbon Project and AIDS awareness, the Red Ribbon is a symbol of love, compassion and support. The booth is constructed so that it can be installed semi-permanently at events. Elements such as lightweight materials, movable millwork and an easily assembled wooden structure, facilitate the installation of the booth at various DIFFA events.

Set to open in the fall of 2017, the new Mandara Spa at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, is an approximately 5,000 square foot space that will join the existing 22,000 square foot Elemis Spa (Sky Tower) in offering a premium leisure experience to guests. ‘Mountain Ocean (MTOC) is a new up-and-coming retailer that provides contemporary fashions at affordable prices. KPA was hired to provide overarching design guidance, ranging from graphics to conceptual design and implementation of MTOC’s retail expansion... ‘...The brand’s irst standalone retail concept is modeled on a chic private residence, one that is modern, raw and slightly industrial.

Inside, wood and glass windowpane partitions divide the space into individual rooms, such as the den, living room, gallery and pantry.

A raw concrete loor perfectly complements the exposed ceiling, glimpsed from between the wooden ins of a second, dropped ceiling. White upholstered furniture and nesting tables ill the space, while weathered oak and black metal pipe ixtures display merchandise... The exterior and interior storefront is clad in white brick, which wraps around the entire 2-sided facade of the corner location... Black metal and glass doors open out from the storefront onto a picturesque courtyard and pond. “Located on the corner of Bowery and Kenmare in SoHo, 176 Bowery is a mixed-use residential and commercial building... scope of the renovations on the three story building include architectural design of the exterior facade and a new rooftop, renovation of the existing commercial space, as well as interior design of the residential unit. Clad in a darkcolored brick, the newly renovated building is aesthetically uniform, with maximized ground loor retail. The uppermost two loors house a residential unit, designer with exposed brick walls, an open loor plan and loor to ceiling windows that let in plenty of natural light.�
