FYI/Happenings Thousands Expected at Civic Center Park for Women’s March Thousands of local women are expected to march through downtown Denver on January 21 in a sister event to the national Women’s March on Washington, D.C., which is occurring the same day. A group of local women came together to plan the event last November. News of the march spread organically through social media, with more than 40,000 women, men and children from around Colorado expressing interest in participating. Organizers describe the march not as a protest, but rather as an opportunity for participants to support social justice, human rights and equality, and to demonstrate that they will be vigilant in protecting these rights moving forward. While the March and rally are sponsored and organized by women, everyone is welcome to attend. “Women make up over 50 percent of the population, yet the rights of women and other marginalized groups are in danger of being taken away,” said Cheetah McLellan, one of the local organizers. “We hope the march helps inspire women and all participants to take action and do whatever they can to participate in our democracy.”

First Denver Safe Home for Teen Survivors of Sex Trafficking The staff and Board of Directors of Extended Hands of Hope announced today that they will be hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to celebrate the opening of Avanti House - a safe home for teen survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation. Extended Hands of Hope’s mission is to offer safe housing and supportive services to survivors of minor sex trafficking, as well as raise awareness through education. This is the first home open in Denver specifically for survivors of minor sex trafficking. FYI/Happenings Open Enrollment for Joshua Academy Starts January 30th Joshua Early Childhood Center (JECC) will hold an open house on Saturday, January 28 from 10:00am – noon. The event is an opportunity to see JECC’s a new facility located in Centennial CO. JECC combines its expanded traditional preschool, Joshua Academy, with its Joshua Early Intervention program for children with autism. Beginning January 30, Joshua Academy preschool will begin open enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year. The Joshua School (TJS) began serving children with developmental disabilities in October of 2005, and rapidly grew into one of the most outstanding Facility Schools for autism in the country. Joshua Early Intervention began to thrive and in 2011, TJS expanded and established the preschool program Joshua Academy to provide an integrated model serving children of all abilities. According to Brooke Lestikow, director of Joshua Academy, “JECC is at the forefront of providing this type of advanced preschool where everyone benefits.” Joshua Academy is a curriculumbased early childhood learning experience for all children. “We place a heavy emphasis on building character, kindness and acceptance through our integrated environment,” says Brooke Lestikow, program director of Joshua Academy. JA utilizes Creative Curriculum and Teaching Strategies GOLD for assessment and teaching areas such as literacy, arithmetic, and social/emotional development. The expansion furthers JECC’s ability to help each student attain the highest quality of life, valuing each mind, body and spirit. The Joshua Early Childhood Center grew out of the school’s renowned Early Intervention model to become an all-inclusive setting that serves children between the ages of 2 and 6 years old to form a community that emphasizes acceptance, understanding and character. City Council Adopts Legislation for Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled Auditor Timothy M. O’Brien, CPA, praised the Denver Department of Human Services and the City Council today for approving legislation to clarify use of the property taxes dedicated to the care of intellectually and developmentally disabled Denver residents. “We’re pleased that Denver decisionmakers realized the need to tighten up the administration of this special tax revenue stream to ensure better delivery of services to this vulnerable population,” explained O’Brien. “We can recommend improvements, but it’s up to the Mayor and City Council to implement them.” In late 2015, the Auditor’s Office conducted an audit of Rocky Mountain Human Services (RMHS), also known as Denver Options, the community-centered board designated by the state to provide case management and services for intellectually and developmentally disabled Denver residents. The audit found a series of improper expenditures by the staff of RMHS and inadequate oversight by the Denver Department of Human Services (DDHS). The legislation, passed yesterday by City Council, codifies the 2003 initiated ordinance into the Denver Revised Municipal Code and removes Denver Options as the required recipient of the special tax revenue, allowing DDHS more discretion in contracting with the relevant providers. The bill also caps the portion
of the property taxes that can be spent on administrative costs at 15%, calls for an annual report to City Council, and adds a Denver residency requirement. In the aftermath of the RMHS audit, the Colorado State Legislature passed legislation providing greater oversight of community-centered boards (CCBs). CCBs throughout the state were also mandated to make their operations more transparent by posting financial information on their websites. Families who rely on the services of the CCBs pushed their counties to perform audits similar to the one done by the Denver Auditor’s Office. “Because of our audit, we had a number of meetings last year with state legislators, Denver City Council members, and the families of the intellectually and developmentally disabled clients. The need for new legislation emerged from those meetings,” O’Brien said. “I’m proud that we were able to play a part in improving services for these residents not just in Denver, but throughout the state.”

FYI/Happenings The programs aim to assist Veterans who become involved in the justice system to get treatment for mental health problems that may exist. These programs are especially needed given the numbers of Veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Each VA Medical Center has a designated justice outreach specialist (VJO). VJO specialists function as a link between VA, Veterans, and the local justice system. They serve both incarcerated Veterans and justice-involved Veterans who have not been incarcerated. Through needed mental health treatment, mentorship, and knowledgeable judges, Veterans have a lower recidivism rate than Veterans incarceration without the program. This saves the state money but also treats our Veterans with the respect and honor they deserve. Three moving stories are below (Stories are true but all identifying information changed and new first names): Alice was a 51 year old cancer survivor and domestic abuse survivor who found peace with her dogs and a life of service to older Veterans residing in a retirement community in a small town. Following an unexpected medication interaction she was facing felony charges and significant jail time, which would have seriously impacted her physical and mental health. She would have lost her home, her ability to do service work and her pets. Instead she was able to engage in needed treatment in place of jail time and graduated suc-
cessfully from the Vet Court program in under 2 years. Adam is a 3 times deployed combt Veteran who worked in law enforcement until a series of DUI’s ended his career. His untreated PTSD lead to untreated alcohol abuse and eventual domestic violence charges which could have led to a stint in Dept. of Corrections. In Vet Court we were able to engage him in substance abuse treatment and PTSD care at the residential and outpatient level. He graduated from the program with over a year of sobriety, successfully completed a residential combat PTSD program, employment and a new connection with his family. His ability to avoid prison and a felony charge meant he could move to Florida after he finished the court and be near his mother who he now helps take care of. William served in Vietnam and has suffered from untreated PTSD since. His abuse of substances began with alcohol and eventually lead to heroin and prescription opioid abuse. He had been in and out of jail and failed on regular probation many times. He had no contact with family for many years, no steady employment and had been chronically street homeless for many years. A stolen car charge could have led to prison and release back to homelessness. Instead in the Vet Court he was able to have help getting engaged with the VA for the first time ever. He received help from the homeless program first transitional housing from the Grant Per Diem Program and

then permanent housing through HUDVASH. He engaged with the Substance Abuse Treatment Program for addiction and PTSD care. He found employment through Compensated Work Therapy and got service connected for his injuries in uniform. He had some setbacks and relapses but the court did not give up and the VA was there to offer care whenever he was willing to accept it. He graduated from the court with an apartment, income, healthcare for life and is still engaged in outpatient treatment.

This was the 29th year for the festive occasion at the Barth Hotel started back in 1988 for the 62 seniors who call the beautiful historic building at 17th and Blake Streets their home. Reflections on the Middle East
Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) Center for Visual Art (CVA) announces an exhibition of more than 60 photo-based works that reflect the tension inherent in the presence, or absence, of people in a place, whether in their native land or abroad. Organized by the CVA and on view February 3 through April 8, 2017, Presence: Reflections on the Middle East features 12 artists living in the U.S. and abroad. The artists, all who are affected by the Middle East diaspora of the past
20 years, explore what it means to leave something, and in some cases, someone, behind, whether by choice or by force, and how cultural heritage and the past is interwoven with the present. Through controlling placement and context of the figure, along with the subtleties of obscurity, these artists preserve identity, relationship and agency. “What makes Presence really interesting is that it offers a glimpse into the artists’ creative thinking and practice informed by cultural heritage more so than geography or age,” said Cecily Cullen, CVA Managing Director / Curator. “Each artist can share a story about how geopolitical issues have affected their families and customs, and ultimately informed their artistic work.” Photography has been theorized and argued many different ways, but there is usually no disagreement about its power in relationship to memories and the past. Since its invention, photography has been tied to the notion of the trace. Often, a presence is felt most acutely through its absence. Dumb Friends League New Free Spay/Neuter Clinic for Cats On Jan. 17, the Dumb Friends League will open a new spay/neuter clinic for cats as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce the number of cats on the streets and in shelters. The Dumb Friends League Solutions – Cat Spay/ Neuter Clinic will offer fully subsidized (no-cost) spay/neuter surgeries for all Colorado cats, including feral cats, community cats (tame or feral free-roaming cats), and owned cats. Anyone can bring a cat to the clinic for spay/neuter surgery, regardless of income. Together with Dumb Friends League, the new facility and spay/ neuter program are being partially funded for a three-year period by generous grants totaling $900,000 donated by the Animal Assistance Foundation, PetSmart Charities®, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The program has been endorsed by the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and the local veterinary community. The League will be working closely with
local organizations, including Denver Animal Protection, Metro Denver C.A.T. and a number of rescues and TNR groups, for cat trapping and transporting services. The Dumb Friends League Solutions – Cat Spay/Neuter Clinic will be located at PetAid Colorado on 191 Yuma St. in Denver, conveniently located in central Denver near I-25 and 6th Avenue. The clinic will be operated by the Dumb Friends League and staffed by members of the Dumb Friends League veterinary team. The clinic will augment—not replace—the Dumb Friends League mobile spay/neuter program. The goal of the clinic will be to spay or neuter 10,000 additional cats per year. Mars Buys VCA Camp Bow Wow
Soon, a majority of Mars Inc. candy manufacturer's business will be related to pets, thanks to a $7.7 billion acquisition announced Monday. Mars agreed to buy VCA, a company that owns about 800 animal hospitals, a lab business and dog day care franchises that operate under the name Camp Bow Wow. VCA will be part of Mars Petcare but will operate as a “distinct and separate business unit,” the companies said in a statement on Monday. Poul Weihrauch, the president of Mars Petcare, said in an interview that Mars’“love story” with pets goes back to 1935. That year, Forrest Mars Sr. bought Chappell Brothers, giving the candy

company access to Chappie brand canned dog food. Today, Mars has 39 brands in its Petcare portfolio, its second largest division. Merging with Mars, which is privately held, rids VCA of the challenges of being a public company, including the difficulty of justifying large investment in research and development, said Mr. Antin, 66, in an interview. He said he would remain chief executive of the unit after the acquisition closes. “We’ll be able to leverage off their technology, and the amazing part about it is their company is focused on what’s best for veterinarians,” Mr. Antin said.

Thousands of homes have been sold during both Republican and Democratic administrations. So no matter who lives in the White House, or what party controls the House and Senate, the economy or more specifically the housing market, will be based on people's individual wants, needs, and capabilities. Although this election has had everyone fixated on politics, it is primarily economic factors driving the real estate market heading into 2017. Irrespective of the election, the economic cycle was already showing increased signs of strength and momentum. 2017 is likely to be viewed as less traditional in assessing its predictability. We are heading into this era with strong employment, rising salaries, still very low interest rates, and a shortage of inventory (nationally and locally). Those are factors which fuel home appreciation
and higher sales activity. Job growth is the best indicator to determine the strength of the housing market. The national unemployment rate continues to hover around 4. 7%, while Denver continues to enjoy 4-4.1 % unemployment with legitimate ongoing optimism. Amazing interest rates are still in play, but likely to rise a half to a full point by year end. The housing market can thank Baby Boomers and Millenials for the increased real estate momentum. Baby Boomers (empty nesters) have been and will be making lifestyle changes as they continue to get closer to retirement. Although interest rates are a factor, Millenials do not see rates as a driving factor in purchasing a home. They are viewing ownership as the best path to building personal wealth and creating stability in their lives, not to mention they are becoming tired of paying increased rents. One challenge for buyers looking for a home, in many of the higher demand cities (including Denver) is how can they best compete with other buyers doing the same thing.
