La Verticalità dell’Etna La Verticalità sull’Etna è un concetto fondamentale che tutti i veri viticoltori etnei ben conoscono e da sempre ricercano. La Verticalità si evidenzia nell’allevamento della vite ad Alberello etneo. La vite per sua natura tende a crescere verso l’alto, in senso verticale. Si muove vero il cielo, sostenuta dal suo palo di castagno. La Verticalità è fondamentale nell’impianto del vigneto, che con l’aiuto delle terrazze, dei muretti a secco, risale le pendenze della Montagna. Le terrazze che costruiscono il paesaggio etneo hanno la fondamentale funzione di contenere le sabbie vulcaniche, suoli incoerenti, altrimenti destinati ad essere portati verso il basso dalle abbondanti acque piovane. La Verticalità, cosi come per le foglie e i germogli della vite che tendono verso il cielo, si riscontra ed è ricercata dal viticoltore etneo, nello sviluppo radicale. Il viticoltore etneo svolge alcune operazioni colturali del vigneto in modo da costringere le radici a crescere verso il basso.
The Verticality of Etna
The Verticality is essential for true vine growers of Etna. Verticality mean to cultivate vine with the system of the etnean Alberello (bush vine). The vine by its nature grows upward, vertically. It moves true the sky, supported by his pole chestnut. The Verticality is fundamental in the system of the vineyard. The etnean vine, lives with the help of the terraces, with the drystone walls, goes up the slopes of the Mountain. The terraces have the fundamental function to contain the volcanic sand, otherwise destined to be brought down of the rain. The Verticality, as well as for the leaves and buds of the vine that tend toward the sky, is wanted by etnean winegrower, for the growth of the roots.
Il fine è di spingere l’apparato radicale quando più in profondità nel terreno e raggiungere gli strati più profondi, più minerali. Lo scopo è mantenere la radice lontano dalla superfice, dove le condizioni climatiche esterne condizionerebbero negativamente la vita della pianta, e metterla in contatto con tutti gli strati del suolo etneo, che si contraddistingue per una maggiore variabilità in verticale che in orizzontale. Il vero vigneto etneo, in armonica con il suo territoriale e naturalmente integrato con il vulcano, si esprime in Verticale: vive e vegeta verso l’alto (terrazze, apparato fogliare) e verso il basso (apparato radicale), in opposte direzioni ma complementari tra loro. Lo sviluppo in orizzontale del vigneto sull’Etna (distruzione delle terrazze per rendere piatto il terreno, impianto del vigneto a spalliera, allevamento della vite a cordone) è solo esigenza di forzatura della vite ai fini della meccanizzazione e della sola quantità produttiva.
The winegrower Etna does some farming operations in the vineyard in order to force the roots to grow down, deep into the soil, in the deeper layers, more minerals. The real etnean vineyard is in harmony with its terroir, is naturally integrated with the volcano Etna and it is expressed in Vertical: lives and grows upwards (leaves and shoots to the sky, in lavic stone terraces) and down in the depth (roots), in opposite directions but complementary between them. In the Etna, the vineyard cultivated in horizontal way (destruction of the terraces to make flat the land, cultivation the vineyards in the espalier system) is a forcing system for the vine, intended only for the mechanization and for the quantity.
