Hi kids!

A few years ago, I bought a telescope. I wasn’t sure how to use it at first, or what to look for. I read a book about astronomy, which is the study of the universe, and I learned about the sun, the moon and all the planets. Then one day, I pointed my telescope to the sky and found Saturn—I even saw its rings!

The night sky seems endless, with so many stars and constellations. Isn’t it cool to know that God created it all?

Earth is just one of the beautiful and unique planets that He created in our universe, and there is a lot more to discover. Read this issue of Just for Kids to learn about God’s great creation.

The rings that we see around Saturn are made up of chunks of rock and ice. There are seven rings and they are kept in place by gravity.

There are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth. That is a lot of stars!

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are all planets that don’t have a solid surface like Earth does, so you can’t walk on them.

The Story of Creation

Have you ever wondered where everything in the universe came from?

As Christians, we believe that all life comes from God. The Bible tells us that in the beginning, God created the universe. He said, “Let there be light!” And there was light. He called light “day” and called the darkness “night.” He created the water and the land, and the sky above it. He put plants on the land, fish in the water and birds in the sky. He created humans to help watch over it all.

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the huge space of the sky. Let them separate the day from the night.” And so, He made the sun to light the day and the moon and stars to light the night. So next time you look at the moon or gaze at the stars, you can admire God’s amazing work.

of This World

Hi kids!

When God made our world, it was perfect. Adam and Eve, who lived in the Garden of Eden, had everything they needed. God gave Adam and Eve instructions for how to live there, but they didn’t listen to Him. This meant they had to leave His beautiful garden.

Sometimes it’s hard to do what’s right, but you can ask God to help you. As the Bible says, “Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He’s the one who will keep you on track” (Proverbs 3:6 The Message). And remember that God loves you, no matter what!

Adam and Eve Disobey God

Adam and Eve loved the garden home God made for them. While Eve was working one day, a snake spoke to her.

Eve listened to what the snake said. She decided to eat the fruit and gave some to Adam.

Adam told God that Eve gave him the fruit. Eve told God that the snake tricked her. By disobeying God, Adam and Eve brought suffering and death into the world. They could no longer live in the perfect garden God made for them.

Later that day, when God came to the garden, Adam and Eve hid. They had never wanted to hide from God before.

“Where are you?” God asked. “What have you done?”

But God promised to make a way for them to come back to Him. God sent Jesus, His Son, to earth. When Jesus died and rose again, He defeated death. Now, if we believe in Jesus, we can live forever with Him.

Hi kids!

Have you ever visited the zoo? I live near the Toronto Zoo, which is the biggest zoo in Canada! There are exhibits for animals from across the world, from the white wolves and polar bears of the Arctic tundra to the cheetahs and warthogs of the African savannah.

God created so many species of beautiful and fascinating animals. When He created the world, He put humans in charge of looking after it (see Genesis 1:28). That includes animals. We are responsible for the care of all the creatures in our world.

In Genesis 6-7, we read about a great flood that covered the world. This happened because people had turned away from God and embraced sin. But God wanted to make sure that all the animals were saved, so He gave a man named Noah a special task. Keep reading this issue of Just for Kids to find out what Noah did.

Genesis 7:1-18

God told Noah to build a big boat, an ark. God said, “Noah, take your family into the ark. Take two of every kind of animal and bird into the ark with you.”

So Noah did what God told him to do. He carried food for his family and for all the animals into the big boat. Then God sent the animals to Noah. Elephants, mice and lizards. Animals of every kind and size came to Noah! Noah loaded them all on board.

Finally Noah, his family and the animals were in the big boat. God shut the door tightly. Noah and his family stood in the boat looking around at their new home. Then the rain started falling. It kept raining harder and harder. The ground around the boat was soon covered with water.

Then the boat began to float on the water. The rain kept falling. One day, even the tallest mountain was covered with water. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights. But inside the big boat the people and animals were safe and dry.

Did You Know?

Elephants are not only one of the largest animals in the world, they’re also one of the smartest! They can communicate with one another through vibrations in the ground called “seismic signals” that they can detect through their bones from far away.

Hi kids!

There’s nothing more exciting than getting on an airplane to visit a new country. I love to travel and have been to Italy, France, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Where should I go next?

It is so fun to see new places, meet new people, eat food and experience different cultures. Every time I go to a new country, I try to learn a little bit of its language. Learning a new language can be difficult, but when visiting another country, it is polite to know at least “Hello” and “Thank you.”

The Bible tells a story about a city that all spoke the same language, and the people had an ambitious goal—to build a tower that reached heaven. But they were prideful and went against God’s plan. Keep reading to find out what God did, and how suddenly the world began to speak different languages.

The Tower of Babel

Genesis 11:1-9

Along time ago, everyone on earth spoke the same language. They all used the same words and could understand each other perfectly.

As people moved from place to place, they found a big, flat land called Shinar. “Let’s settle here!” they said, and they decided to build a city.

Then they had a big idea. “Let’s build a tower that reaches to the sky. We’ll make a name for ourselves. Then we won’t be scattered over the whole earth.”

What blocks make each tower?

They made bricks and built the tower higher and higher. They were ambitious, trying to reach heaven themselves. But God came down to look at the city and the tower. He said, “They all speak the same language, and they’re working together to build this. If they keep going, they’ll think they can do anything—even things that are not good.”

So God decided to mix up their languages. Suddenly, they couldn’t understand each other anymore and they could not finish the tower. They spread across the earth, and that is how people began to speak many different languages and live all over the world.

What country are you from?

Draw the flag.

Did You Know? Fun With Flags

It is estimated that the world has between 7,000 and 7,500 different languages. That’s a lot! The United Nations is a big group of almost every country in the world that was created to help countries work together and keep peace, and it uses six languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. In Canada, we have two official languages, English and French.

Hi kids!

Would you rather eat waffles or pancakes for breakfast?

Would you rather swim in a swimming pool or visit a beach?

Would you rather play video games or go for a bike ride?

Sometimes making decisions is easy, such as choosing between pancakes or waffles (both delicious!). But other times, we’re faced with tough decisions that leave us confused or worried. The good news is that God is here to help us.

This week, you’ll read about a man named Isaac who trusted God no matter what. Isaac obeyed God when He told him what to do, and even when things didn’t go his way, Isaac kept on going.

Isaac’s Wells

Genesis 26:1-22, 26-31

AISSUE35

man named Isaac lived in a land with very little food. One day, the Lord appeared to Isaac and told him to go and live in a new land. “I will be with you and give you My blessing,” said the Lord. “I will give all these lands to you and to your children. I will keep My word.”

Isaac listened to God and went where he was told. He planted crops, grew plenty of food and became rich. He owned many wells for water and had so many animals and servants that the Philistines (the people who lived in the land) were jealous. They filled up all of Isaac’s wells with dirt and told him to leave! So, he left to find new land and dig new wells.

“The water is ours!” said the Philistines. Every time Isaac dug a new well, they argued with him.

Isaac dug one last well, and when the people noticed that the Lord was with Isaac and had blessed him, they stopped arguing with him. “We want to make peace with you,” they said. And so, they made peace and shared a feast together, and Isaac kept the water from his well.
