With spring cleaning and maintenance behind them, shops and restaurants are open longer hours as more day trippers visit, and the Saluda Historic Depot and Museum is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4pm. Green River Adventures will start kayak tours this month and Orchard Lake Campground will open.

Early mornings and late afternoons are filled with birdsong as migrating birds visit back yard feeders and begin the mating ritual of spring. Breaking the silence of night time winter is a cacophony of croaking frogs and trilling crickets, and daytime is starting to buzz as bees begin their new life cycle. Listen for the chirping of hummingbirds this month as they impatiently wait for you to fill feeders.

Spring revives the beauty of the Saluda mountains and gives hope that all things are renewable.

Along with nature’s symphony as spring awakens in the mountains of Saluda, there are other sounds that are common this time of year. The lively laughter of kids at Saluda School carry through the air as they spend more time outside learning about the changes of the season. Throughout Saluda, whirring of electric tools, buzzing saws, and clanging of hammers reverberate around the mountains as spring time home improvements and repairs get underway. The cherry blossoms are blooming in McCreery Park in Saluda giving hope that the town is getting ready to burst with the pastel colors of spring. Spring showers stir up the musky scent of the earth and rouse the desire to be outdoors and work in gardens or go hiking in the woods.

What's Happening at the Purple Onion in April Spring is here! The new spring menu debuts later this month and it features the fresh, sweet flavors of a warming earth. Fresh local asparagus, ramps, baby carrots, turnips, beets and spring onions adorn and flavor many of the new selections. It’s time to raise the patio walls, enjoy the tastes and smells of spring and come out for some terrific live music.

The Danberry’s

tambourine-shaking, stargazing, breezy voiced front woman that makes up half of The Danberrys. Hailing from the surrounds of Nashville TN, Dorothy and husband Ben DeBerry (guitar/vocals) come together to create a unique entwining of styles. Acoustically driven, their sound spirals through bluegrass with the backbeat of funk, the patient lope of blues, and glimpses of pop. Their latest album 'Give & Receive', was recorded at Zac Brown's Southern Ground studio in Nashville, TN and was released in June 2016. The album received two Independent Music Award nominations for Best Americana Album and Best Country Song (Let Me Ride), and one win for Best Bluegrass Song (Long Song). The Danberrys sing songs rich in pastoral imagery, about overcoming demons, being washed clean and starting anew, and love in its many forms. In conversation with both Ben and Dorothy, spirituality and the concept of blooming into the full power of your brain and heart are topics that often surface, naturally suffusing into their lyrics with clever subtlety - more hinting than hollering.

Live Music Calendar in April Sunday, April 9 We are pleased to welcome back The Danberrys to the Purple Onion stage on Sunday, April 9 at 7 PM. Admission for this show is $15 per person in advance, $18 at the door and seating will be limited. The performance starts at 7 PM. The doors open at 5 PM. Jim Carson AIS Painting The Town/Mastering The Cityscape June 8-10, 2017 ThursdaySaturday Since the Impressionists first moved outside and began painting from life, the design, allure, and light of the city have captivated painters, from the cafes in Paris to Main Street, Saluda. Jim Carson, AIS, will offer a workshop, titled “Painting the Town/ Mastering the Cityscape” on Thursday-Saturday, June 810, 2017. In this indoor workshop, we will learn to simplify the shapes and design of the city, in order to paint it in a fresh and spontaneous manner, instead of stiff and lifeless. There will be a brief, but helpful, discussion on perspective on the first day. The workshop is open to all levels, from beginners to advanced. Saluda Community News Saluda Easter Egg Hunt Saluda's Easter Egg Hunt is Saturday, April 15, in the vacant lot across from the Memorial Park from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Children ages one year to 12 years may participate. In addition to all of the candy-filled plastic eggs, there will be cupcakes and drinks served in the Pavilion immediately following the egg hunt. Swing into Spring FUNdraiser Anyone who participated in the first Annual “Swing into Spring” FUNdraiser for McCreery Park on Saturday, March 25 can tell you that it was a fabulous experience for all and a fantastic success for the first major fundraising effort by the City of Saluda's Parks Planning Committee.

Casual Zealots 2-4 The Casual Zealots are a four person band from the Tryon area. These friends collaborate in various musical projects, and specialize in playing classic R&B, blues, jazz and rock and roll. The name is not an accident. These four approach music and its many charms and mysteries with divine intensity. Balloon Artist and Stilt Walker For the enjoyment of the children and amazement of all, talented Balloon Artist, Stephanie Miles will create art out of balloons from 12:30 to 3:30 in McCreery Park Playground, and Stilt Walker, Ananda (Heather Springsteen) will keep eyes skyward all along Main Street from 11:30 to 3:30. Student Art Challenge The 14th annual Saluda Arts Festival, May 20, 2017, will feature a Student Art Challenge, sponsored by the Saluda Business Association. All Polk County students may submit their creative Art projects through their School Art Department. This year's theme is "Polk County NC, My Home." Students are encouraged to choose an art project to describe/depict Polk County, NC to a first time visitor. Student Art will compete in one of four categories and be awarded official recognition and a $50 Saluda merchandise gift certificate: Categories are: Kindergarten - 2nd grade 3rd – 5th grade 6th - 8th grade 9th – 12th grade All art entries to be collected from the Polk County School District Art Teachers, May 17, 2017. Top of the Grade Concerts at Top of the Grade Park at McCreery Park in historic downtown Saluda begins its 2017 season on Friday, June 9 with four concerts planned this year. All performances will be held on the Ella Grace Mintz Stage from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Top of the Grade Park at McCreery Park. Attendees should bring their own chairs or blankets. Food, soft drinks, beer and wine, and coolers are allowed. Saluda's delicious restaurants will be open serving everything from hamburgers and pizzas to gourmet meals. Events are rain or shine so you may need to bring an umbrella if rain is in the forecast. In some cases, rain events may move to the Pavilion. Headliners are: June 9 – Sound Investments July 14 – Mercury Rising August 11 – TBA September 1 – Super 60’s Concerts are funded through sponsorships by Saluda businesses. Did you know that Saluda, NC and Carunchio, Italy are now SISTER CITIES? The city councils of each town have adopted the other, and several Saludians are working to develop connections between the two mountain villages and to prepare for upcoming visitors from Carunchio. In the spring, the Mayor of Carunchio and a delegation of 5 more citizens will be coming to Saluda. We are planning many events to introduce them to our town. The Rails & Ties That Bound Our Foothills & Mountains Saluda Train Tales is honored to feature Terry Ruscin, authorhistorianphotographer as presenter at Saluda Train Tales on April 21 at 7pm at the Saluda Historic Depot. His program includes a timeline of railroad history in the eastern United States with a focus on the Carolinas and an even tighter focus on Polk, Henderson and Buncombe County railroad heritage. Personalities include railroad executives, innkeepers, townsfolk and celebrated figures that passed through our region or became part-time or fulltime residents here. Depot architecture will be illustrated and discussed through contemporary and vintage photographs, elevations and plans. Ruscin will pilot his audience through Landrum, Tryon, Saluda, Hendersonville and Asheville, including the breathtaking climb from Melrose to Saluda. The program includes a brief history of street rails and logging operations. Ruscin’s latest book, A History of Transportation in Western North Carolina (The History Press, Charleston, SC, 2016), will be available for sale and signing. The book takes in footpaths, gaps, ferries, bridges, river transportation, stagecoaches, railroads, trolleys and streetcars, hacks and drays,

early automobile dealerships and airports and aviators. The 3-member band hales from Atlanta, GA and is performing this concert pro bona to help the Saluda Historic Depot with its fund raising efforts to pay the mortgage on the purchase of the building. Dan Foster was inspired by this small mountain town and wrote a ballad, the Saluda Grade. Dan arranged and performed the first version with the band High Cotton. Now with a new team of musicians, the ballad has been arranged with the Radio Rangers and was released at the Saluda Historic Depot last November. The CD will be on sale during the Depot Spring Fling. Other band members are Mark Ewald, a singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist and Bryant Kachel, electric bass. Spring Walks Walks in the Woods will resume in April on the first and third Sundays of the month. Since the third Sunday in April is Easter Sunday, April will only have one walk which will (hopefully) catch the spring ephemeral wild flowers in their abundance. April 2 – Twin Bridges This will be a moderate meander of 1-2 hours. Walkers will be guided through a huge population of emerging spring wildflowers located at the Twin Bridges over the Pacolet River on US 176 south of Saluda. Walkers meet at the parking lot of the Saluda Library at 2:00. A SCLT member will keep you aware of the terrain of the trail and share their insights about the

Tour of Homes Scheduled for June 3, 2017 The Historic Saluda Committee will sponsor a Tour of Homes on Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 1 – 5 p.m., as a fundraiser for historic preservation projects in Saluda. Historic Shand Hill has been chosen as the site of this year’s tour. There will be five homes on Shand Hill to visit as well as the Saluda Historic Depot, Lola’s Celebration Venue at Thompson’s Store and the Saluda Presbyterian Church, all within walking distance of each other. Tickets are $20 each and will be available at City Hall, Saluda Historic Depot and Heartwood Gallery in Saluda beginning May 1. Parking is available at the Saluda Elementary School, the

Saluda Community Library, and Tickle Family Health Center. There will also be a shuttle van to take you to Shand Hill from the Saluda Community Library, and golf carts will be available between houses. The Historic Saluda Committee (HSC) works to preserve the history and heritage of its people and places that helped make Saluda the enchanting town it is today. The HSC puts a strong emphasis on collecting oral histories of Saluda’s citizens and "summer folk." The HSC is a partner in the effort to purchase and open a historical museum. Photo Sharing Appreciated! We frequently receive donations of old photographs or historical documents relating to Saluda. Sometimes folks loan them to us to scan and digitalize. This is a great way to preserve your family history or the history of the town. The Historic Saluda Committee uses archival quality materials to store donated items. Collections are often shared on Facebook and on the website. As the museum grows at the Saluda Historic Depot, we hope to share more at that location and at other locations around town. Mindful Flow at Isothermal Community College Mindful Flow classes will again be offered this spring at Isothermal Community College. Classes begin in April and are a 4-week series. The series is $20 ($5/class). Classes are on Mondays and Fridays at 10 am. Mindful Flow is taught by Jo Rytter, a Certified Kripalu Movement Instructor, who has been teaching for 17 years. There is a new store opening in Saluda on Saturday, April 15. You have been hearing about it around town for several months and it is soon to be a reality. Saluda Outfitters, an outdoor adventure, specialty retail store, will open for business at 435 Main Street. Housed in a newly restored log cabin, Saluda Outfitters will sell top quality apparel, footwear and recreation equipment and supplies. Historic Thompson Store, Ward’s Grill & Lola’s Celebration Venue Recipe of the Month Sausage, Peppers & Onions Recipe Prep time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 40 minutes Yield: Serves 4 4 Italian Sausage links or 4 Charlie’s Sage Sausage Links 2 Tbsp. Olive oil 1 green bell pepper, sliced into long strips 1 red bell pepper, sliced into long strips 1 bell pepper of another color, yellow or orange, sliced into long strips 4 garlic cloves, sliced into slivers 1 large sweet or yellow onion, sliced into half moons. 1 small can of crushed tomatoes 1 tbsp of dried oregano ½ cup Marsala or red wine ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional) Salt to taste Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large pan hat has a lid. When the oil is hot, add the sausages and brown them slowly. If they sizzle and crackle too much, turn the heat down. You want a gentle browning, not a sear. Cook for several minutes, turning them occasionally so they brown on all sides. When the sausages are browned, remove from the pan and set aside. Saute the onions, peppers, garlic, once the onions & peppers soften, sprinkle salt. Then add all the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Deglaze pan with wine: Add the Marsala or red wine, let the wine cook down by half. Add tomatoes, seasoning, and sausage and then simmer for about 20 minutes. Serve over penne pasta or load up a hoagie

Jerry’s Baddle Multi-Sport Green River Race Saturday, April 29, 2017 Jerry's Baddle is a dual sport race that began in 2006 to honor a good friend, Jerry Beckwith, who had been diagnosed with ALS. The race was born out of a desire to keep his spirit and passion alive by raising money to help fight the disease that eventually took his life and to foster the community he loved. The race consists of 4 miles of whitewater kayaking through the Green River Narrows, followed by 26 miles of road cycling with 4000 ft of cumulative climbing. Following the race, there will be a festival for all racers and spectators at Wilderness Cove Campground. All race fees include entry to the festival. For those not racing, a $20 festival fee covers music, food, and parking. There are men and women's shower houses available for racers to clean up.

Pisgah Chapter of Trout Fly Fishing School Have you ever wanted to learn some thing truly special for this area? The Pisgah Chapter of Trout Unlimited is holding its annual Fly Fishing School on Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 8:30 am to 4:45 pm at Harmon Field in Tryon. Students will receive not only a full day of practical instruction from experienced anglers covering the basics of fly fishing, including equipment, casting, line management and stream tactics, but they will also get a ½ day session of "hands on" learning on one of the area's trout rich rivers or streams. The combination of the classroom instruction and onthe-water guided practice makes this one of the most unique and economical fly fishing schools available in our area. The cost of the school is $150 for adults and $100 for students (ages 12 to 18). College Students in 5-Rivers Outreach Program: $125. Tryon Garden Club spring programs Spring Wildflower Walks at Pearson’s Falls The Tryon Garden Club is pleased to announce its spring series of Nature Walks at Pearson’s Falls. The first walk on March 30 (rain date April 3) will be led by Dr. Gillian Newberry who will describe all that is unique about Pearson’s Falls. The second walk will be on April 4 (rain date April 6) led by David Campbell, an expert in rare and threatened species. The third walk will be May 3 (rain date May 5) led by Virginia Meador who will point out the many varieties of ferns in the Glen. All talks begin at 10:15 and end at 12:00. You may want to bring a pencil and notepad, wildflower books, water, walking stick, or a hat. The group will meet at the Garden House near the front gate for an initial presentation by the speaker who will then lead a guided walk up through the Glen to the Falls pointing out wildflowers and ferns along the way. Ken Webb Ken Webb’s newest book "High Beams on Bumpy Roads". Illustrated by Saluda's own Dorrie V. McKinley I worked in two diverse businesses for many years, first in journalism and later in the automotive sales business. The job of newspaper reporting involves looking for good stories, and the car business has long been known for producing them. "Little White Icon" and "Professor Porsche's Road Test" are stories that were collected from those times in my life. Other tales in this book wind their way from my early childhood through my college years. Those stories sprang from family storytelling and relationships with friends, and each has a car in the middle of it. "Once a Car Guy..." and "White Robes, Black Sedans" are early childhood stories, while "Where's My Car?" and "Saturday Night Sermonette" tap into my teenage years when my brothers and I lived under the watchful eye of our dad, a by-the-book Lutheran pastor. I wrote "Steve, We Have a Problem" for a writer's work-shop anthology some years ago, but its car dealer subject merited dusting off with some revisions for inclusion in this collection. No matter which story the reader chooses, he or she will find a car or truck rolling through or over a relationship and probably something to laugh about. Some

of these tales poke a little fun at my family and me, and chances are the reader may find something reminiscent from his or her own life with cars. While all twenty stories in this book are rooted in truth, each one has been embellished for fictional license. Names have been changed in most of the stories, but the names of my family remain true. antique pulpit came from a South Carolina church that had closed. Martha Ashley shared the following information: The sanctuary of the church remains a well-preserved example of late nineteenth century vernacular Gothic Revival. The weather boarded structure features a gable front, a corner two-stage entrance tower, a shallow rear apse, and pointed arched windows. Such details as carved rafter ends, decorative eves, brackets on the tower, decorative bracing at the front gable peak above a quatrefoil roundel, and a double leaf entrance surmounted by a decoratively carved triangular pediment greatly enliven the exterior. The only exterior alteration consists of the circa 1941 shed-roofed addition of two Sunday School rooms on the north side of the building. The interior of the sanctuary has been altered by the application of fiberboard block panels on the walls, but the beaded board ceiling and wainscot survive. Just south of the church and mimicking it in general design is the education building built in the early 1950s, a brick veneer structure with a gable-front roof, a recessed corner entrance, and a corner tower with spire.

Remembering Connie Our good friend and neighbor passed away this week. Conyers “Connie” Woodruff was one of the first and best neighbors we met after moving to our Saluda home. Through the years we got to know her well, helped her with chores, swapped garden plants and shared meals. Best of all our Mom was co-conspirator along with Connie for various projects some of which were of dubious sense and not at all safe but created great stories and memories.

Not long after moving to Saluda, Connie called our house and flatly announced “Bring buckets of water and a mop and meet me at the mailboxes.” Since the mailboxes are a good half mile from our house, it was a trick to get buckets of water out to the main road. When we arrived, we found Connie’s mail box and ours covered with what looked like marshmallow cream. Naughty bored kids from down the road had filled up the boxes with perfumed shaving cream and covered the outside too. Our Mom was furious since she is allergic to perfume. Mom promptly declared she would “kill” whoever did it. It took several trips back and forth to the house hauling water to clean up the mess. Connie worked with mops and Mom used sticks to push the stinking creamy mess to the ground. Finally, it was all cleaned up as best as we could. When crossing the road, Connie tells me “Don’t you tell your Mom who did this!” I replied that I did not know who did it and asked if Connie knew. She said yes, but she was not going to tell Mom since she had heard Mom say she was going to “kill” whoever was responsible. I quickly pointed out Mom was not going to “kill” anyone. Connie drily and accurately allowed that she had only known us a short time and was not taking any chances with being party to murder! Through our years of being Connie’s friend, we chased raccoons out of her kitchen, cleaned up an exploded home brew grape wine mess in a closet, helped dispose of a frozen dead dog from her car trunk, dug holes to hide pottery from “someone”, assisted with the “liberation” of antique plants in danger of a tractor (it was not stealing!), abetted with the hanging of underpants on the trees in someone’s yard and a few other projects that we probably should not admit to. Connie was awesome, spunky and resourceful. She was a great

neighbor and friend and we are thankful for the many wonderful memories we have to treasure. Remember to hug your friends and neighbors and let them know how much you appreciate them.

Boy Scout Camp Along in the late 1930's the Palmetto Council of the Boy Scouts of America were looking for a place to put a summer camp for the Palmetto Council, which covered Spartanburg County, Laurens County, Union County, and Cherokee County, I believe. Our Daddy knew of their efforts and told them he knew about a place they ought to look at. So to make a story short, they came and looked and liked what they saw. The place on Case's Branch, just below where we walked through the still, was just about solid rock on both sides and you could put a dam in there and make a nice lake. This is what they needed, so they bought the Tom Newman's old place and some land from Dave Thompson, and our Daddy gave them some and they put in the camp.

cabin. It ran so close to the spring house that it fouled up the spring. The cow lot was gone, and the little barn, but it was a good road for cars. The camp had to have electricity, so the power line was run all the way down our hollow. What bottom land the road didn't take is all grown up in trees now. The people came and cut the right-ofway for the power line and I can't tell you what they did to the rest of our hollow. Momma tried to send our Daddy off some place, but you know he had to see it soon. My big sister, Libba, said he just cried and talked about those white pines and other trees that were lying dead on the ground like they might have been people. But, they put in the electricity to the house at Hidden Well, and later Ed Leland ran us a phone line, and the house had a well and running water that wasn't by gravity flow. The boys and girls two privies are still out there in the woods, just in case, but life is better and easier for all who spend summers there and all who visit at Hidden Well. I meet grown-up men once in a while who went to Camp Palmetto, and they tell me about the wonders of the Boy Scout Camp in Saluda, where they used to go and about their camping and walking the ridges and going canoeing on Green River. My heart turns over and I'm glad. I'm glad they had their time on Case's Branch, and I hope it lives with them always, as my times there remain with me.

The Ox Brought Music To Our Home The ox had a big part in building our first home. We had a big horn my mother used to blow when she wanted us to come to dinner. I asked her, one time, where we got that horn. She said my father was getting logs to build the house and one of his oxen got his horns in some brush and pulled one off. The horn just slipped off the pith. My mother said my father tried to tie it back but it would not stay. That was the biggest horn I have ever seen -and was the easiest to blow. When mother would blow that horn for dinner when we were working corn, the horse we had would stick the plow up. We just had to go to dinner. The ox put music in our home. One day a man came by our house selling organs and wanted to sell us an organ. He had one with him. My father told him we did not want an organ. There was no one that could play it. The ma said he was going on and he did not want to haul the organ. There was no one that wanted it so he would leave it for a week or so and would come and get it. So he left the organ and went on. In about two weeks, he came back. During that time some of us had learned to play “Koon-shine” and we wanted to keep the organ. We had a horse and yoke of oxen, but no money, so Father traded the oxen for the organ.

When the camp came they had to have a road, so a road was built all through our Hollow. It took most of the tillable little patches, and it wiped out the yard and home sight of Jackie Thompson's
