The paleolithic diet has gained substantial ground in the past 2 years as more nutritionists and health gurus turn a sceptical eye to the benefits of a grain - based diet, which many of us eat. Embracing the foods of hunter-gatherers, the Paleo diet is red-hot right now. Celebrities such as Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Biel and Miley Cyrus are reportedly eating like cavemen. The Paleo diet is hardly new. First popularised in the mid-1970s by gastroenterologist Walter Voegtlin, it in many ways resembles the South Beach, Atkins and other low-carb regimens. The Paleo diet consists of fish, grass-fed pasture-raised meats, vegetables, fruit, mushrooms, nuts and roots, while eschewing grains, legumes potatoes, refined salt, refined sugar, processed oils and, in most cases, dairy products. High Heels 20 Times a day is the average amount of times we laugh per day. Not enough apparently, as laughing has many health benefits. A good giggle, reduces stress, makes us feel much more positive, which is a boost to infection fighting antibodies. We should be laughing our heads off, so try to check out some stand up comedy, or get hooked into a comedy series, or maybe even stop taking yourself so serious seriously.

The Spa and Salon Software Industry: Trending Towards Stress-Free Management IT’S TYPICAL Saturday morning; each one of your staff is booked solid and the front doors seem to be constantly swinging open from t he number of clients coming in and out. A few weeks ago you would have been pulling out your hair, but this Saturday is different. You’re now using a new online scheduling system that has made running your place pretty much stress-free.

computing means for spas and salons is that staff will be able to not only turnover more appointments and bring in revenue faster, but also be able to offer a greater level of customer service at every touch point in the client’s experience.

Business management for spas and salons is becoming an almost stress-free experience thanks to the new breed of cloud-based software providers. They offer the industry advanced online systems, equipped with every tool needed to run a successful business. Tools like online appointment booking and staff scheduling, an integrated cash register, real-time reporting and built-in CRM (Customer Relationship Management) are all included. Many of them have even thrown in a couple helpful extras like online marketing tools, to build and send out automated campaigns, and a social media platform, used to manage all your communications from one central system. This new breed of software vendors has come a long way to provide spas and salons with solutions that are not only resourceful, but completely equipped to manage their business.

One of the most valuable automated tools offered today is online bookin booking, which allows clients to book their appointments through your website 24/7. An integrated online booking tool is much more than an online booking form; it will provide an immediate confirmation to your client and book the appointment in your schedule in real-time. Online booking has proven to be a great revenue source and a strategic marketing tool used by some of the world’s most successful spas and salons, bringing in on average 15-20% in additional revenue!

TAKING YOUR BUSINESS TO THE CLOUD Over the last 3 to 5 years software companies have been switching over from the de-centralized, outdated, on-premise systems to the new and more agile cloud-based service providers. Cloud-based software requires very little if any IT skills to implement and support, and best of all there’s no additional hardware needed or any database software to be maintained. This not only means lower operational costs for spas and salons, but that they can also have a system that is relia and accessible; a cloud-based system is accessible more reliable from anywhere in world via an internet connection. For multi-location and fast-growing spas and salons, a cloud-based solution can easily scale to meet the demands of high performance and system availability. Cloud-based software has become so trusted that even governments and large high-profile corporations like Hyatt, Steiner Leisure, Mario Tricoci, Cowshed and Nails have taken their business “to the cloud”. In essence, cloud-based software companies offer a cost-effective solution that delivers a higher level of reliability, accessibility and scalability that the traditional server-based software could not. THE MOBILE TREND One of the biggest advantages of a cloud-based solution is that it supports mobile computing. Se Service providers have taken heed of the massive mobile trend so that spa and salon staff aren’t chained to the front desk anymore. They have released mobile apps that allow you to manage your business from a range of mobile devices. The apps allow staff to move around the premises and quickly check in or check out clients, access the appointment scheduler and manage client profiles. What mobile

U AND COMING: E-WALLETS THE UP Mobile payment and wallet technology has advanced over the years thanks to torch-bearers such as Google, Starbucks, Visa and Mastercard. As the technology continues to advance more companies are expected to adopt this technology including spa and salon owners – where speed and convenience is a must. Smart phones enabled with an e-wallet (or mobile wallet) will soon be able to interact direct directly with your spa and salon software; clients will be able to pay for services using an app on their phone and do so with just a tap of a button. This upcoming feature will not only be convenient for your clients, but also mean quick and easy transactions for your staff. ONE SIZE DOESN’T FIT ALL Although many software companies are starting to offer cloud-based solutions, the solution and capabilities vary from vendor to vendor. Every vendor has a niche, suited more or less to a specific market segment. For instance, some cloud-based service provides focus on selling to smaller, single-location spas and salons, where the product is sold “out-of-the-box” and comes with minimal training and support. Vendors that focus on larger and/or multi-location spas and salons offer a more comprehensive solution, typically at a higher price point and provide a more hands-on, consultative approach to service, training te and technical support. When it comes to choosing the right software for your business, the old adage is true; “one size does not fit all”. T he right software provider is not always the cheapest or the most expensive, but is rather one that takes the time to understand your business and is dedicated to helping you achieve your long-term strategic goals.

Living Well Happy & Healthy 17

Whole-istic healing An introduction to Alternative Wellbeing In the 24 hour working world we live in, a two week holiday in the sun once a year just doesn’t cut it. Natalie Wallace explores holistic therapies in the first of our special features on wellbeing for the body and mind.

It’s getting harder and harder to wind down, switch off, relax and recuperate, which probably explains the beauty industries notable curve into the alternative therapy arena. Constant stresses of balancing work and family life, financial pressures, technologies cluttering our attention, in fact all of those 21st century strains on happy existence mean we’re looking for much more than a frivolous pick me up in the form of a mani-pedi. We need rescuing on a frequent basis.

18 18

Beauty, as we know, is about much more than keeping zits and blemishes at bay and to truly take care of ourselves, we need to treat our minds and bodies to a little TLC, probably more often than a monthly facial or so, and it should, more than probably, be a positive lifestyle choice. This is where the world of holistic therapy and alternative beauty therapy comes in. Here are 2013s workout classes which are established a cult following across the world

H

olistic therapies concentrate on supporting and balancing our immune system and giving the body and mind the natural tools to heal itself. While symptoms of illness, whether physical or mental, present themselves in a variety of different ways, the holistic approach focuses on treating the person as a whole (the physical, tre psychological, spiritual and social aspects), fighting the root cause of all symptoms rather than the symptoms themselves. Often, the client will find holistic therapies will treat other ailments and improve their overall wellbeing without them being directly treated. While it very much sounds like and actually does form the basis of New Age and Western spiritual philosophy, the concepts of holistic therapy actually date back to classical Greek philosophers from the 4th century BC. Those clever men agreed that factors such as weather, nutrition, emotions and pollution all contribute to the wellbeing of the human body. Since then, scientists and researchers have bod set out to prove these theories wrong in favour of modern medicine only to find time and time again that their research confirms the powers of holistic therapies and natural and herbal remedies. Conditions such as back and neck pain, sports injuries, headaches, IBS, hay fever, psoriasis, arthritis and even the biggie – stress, could all be improved with a holistic approach. With a wealth of knowledge and research into alternative treatments at the fingertips of the client,it is essential for spas and salons to offer organic products as well as non-invasive, natural treatments in order to meet the customers’ expectations of choice when it comes to their health and beauty. beaut Delving into the world of holistic health will not only give existing clients new ideas to explore, but broaden your client base and give the impression of a wholesome approach to their wellbeing. Here are some of the top holistic therapies to explore:

Japanese holistic face massage This treatment is based on the idea that the head, face, shoulders and neck have energy lines and pressure points which can be manipulated using a unique massage technique. The massage technique uses the principles of Tao which means to live in harmony with the pathway. The Tao system focussing on releasing tensions, tension stress and blocked energy which in turn leads to better physical and mental health and leaves a radiant complexion which, according to Japanese tradition, is a sign of inner peace.

20

20

Zone therapy More commonly known as reflexology, zone therapy involves applying pressure to the feet, hands and ears. The idea is there are ten areas on the feet that correspond to the body’s organs, glands, bones, body systems and parts and that by manipulating these areas using a hand massage technique, the therapist is able to unblock energy, tension, improve a circulation, release pain and stress and improve the overall wellness of the body. Ultimately, the goal is to balance the energy in the body which will allow it to heal naturally. Zone therapy is increasingly used alongside other treatments (whether medical or holistic) to alleviate illnesses such as anxiety, stress, asthma, sinusitis or even cardiovascular conditions. si

Acupressure This one works along the same lines, literally long energy lines in this case, as Reflexology. While both treatments work with areas of the body which affect the corresponding body part of function, acupressure uses over 800 points compared to reflexologies meagre 10. These 800 points are found along energy lines which run down the whole body.

Reiki Reiki is a fairly new treatment compared to other holistic treatments rooted in ancient concepts. Founded in the early 20th century, reiki means universal life energy’ and in Japanese, is also used to describe a process of natural healing focussing on spiritual and emotional traits and experiences of the treatment can vary from person to person. The tre Reiki healer, very simply, places their hands in positions in various places on the body or very close to the body while the client lays or sits fully clothed, closes their eyes and relaxes. Some clients are said to not feel anything during their healing session and some simply fall into a relaxing slumber while the healer is at work. Others feel heat or a tingling sensation between the healer’s hands and their body while others see colours. Connecting to the spiritual and emotional side of a person’s being, practitioners recommend Reiki for when clients are experiencing difficult or overwhelming times in their lives making the treatment perfect for those who suffer with stress or anxiety. anxiet The non-intrusive nature of the treatment also means it can be wonderfully relaxing for pregnant women and children

Massage While massage is expected to be on every treatment list belonging to a spa or beauty salon, it may be worth noting that these treatments are one of the oldest and most significant methods of ancient healing in alternative therapy. With a myriad of physical and mental health benefits, explore some of the most ancient but effective techniques on offer. Hot stone massage: Designed to manipulate muscles at the very deepest level, hot stone massage is said to be one of the most relaxing treatments on the market. Heated volcanic rocks He are used by the therapist to perform the massage or, the stones are placed on the chakras or energy points of the client to re-balance natural energy flow. This treatment is great for toxin drainage, improving circulation as well as arthritic problems, and relieves aches, muscular tension pro and symptoms of stress and anxiety. Indian head massage: This therapy has been in practice amongst Indian families for over one thousand years as a daily healing and relaxation ritual and also plays a part in wedding and birth ceremonies. Relieving tension which has built up in the top end of the body, the practitioner will use techniques over the neck, shoulder, scalp and face. As well as the common benefits of massage, the Indian Head technique also offers relief for conditions associated with the head and shoulder area such as headaches, migraines, sinusitis and insomnia. Many Ma clients will report to feel energised and able to concentrate better. Swedish body massage: Dating back to the 19th century, Swedish body massage is also known as holistic massage and is a traditional technique using oils and a sequence of gentle massage techniques. While the sense of touch eases the mind, relieves aches and pains and provides natural healing, the essential oils penetrate the body

and improve the skin often relieving conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, scar tissue and cellulite. With treatments like these focussing on the clients body, mind and lifestyle as a whole, an hour or so at the spa becomes less of an optional indulgent expense and more of a compulsory step to maintain a balanced, healthy lifestyle which enables the client to better cope with the strains of modern living.

Thermal Auricular Therapy (aka Hopi Ear Candles) These specially designed hollow ear candles are inserted into the ear, lit and the gentle suction gently massages the ear drum while removing any impurities. The overall effect is calming, soothing and is said to offer relief for problems associated with the ear, nose and throat areas. This treatment is often used by practitioners around the world as an alternative to syringing and grommets. This is another alternative therapy rooted in ancient traditions. The Ancient Greeks are said to have originally used ear candles for spiritual healing before they were used for physical benefits while the Shamen healers of the American Hopi Indians from North Arizona introduced the No therapy to the modern world. The ancients healers are said to have used the candles for initiation rituals as well as healing the tribe and the candles are still made today using the same traditional formula used by the Hopi Indians. The candles themselves are again, non-invasive and are made using natural ingredients non-i such as cotton, pure beeswax, honey extract and a host of vitamins and minerals such as St John’s Wort, sage and camomile which are particularly effective when treating anxiety, nervousness and other mental stress related conditions.

KINDNESS LITTLE ACTS BIG IMPACTS

Choosing well-being for ourselves

can help us to achieve the goals that are most meaningful to us, and to live up to our highest values, or at least move closer to those goals and values. Well-being means having fun. And it means feeling truly happy and fulfilled in our lives.

Most people think that success leads to happiness, but research shows this formula is backward: happiness fuels success, not the other way around

Steam up your shower

WHAT IS BAD FOR YOU TO EAT Well the only bad thing for you to eat , is the thing that you eat in excess, any food or drink taken in excess is Probably the single thing that will in the long run not be good for you 24

24

Going to the spa for a facial is one of the best things you can do for your skin. Estheticians are able to look at the condition of your skin and recommend the best treatments. But no matter what type of skin you have steam is of the spa’s secret tricks while giving one o you a facial. It opens your pores, and the gentle heat brings blood to the surface of your skin, which helps it naturally repair itself. When you’re going to go take a shower, turn the temperature hotter than normal, and shut the door for a few minutes. This allows the steam to build up. Once it has a good amount of steam, you have created your own steam room. Take your shower as normal, and over time, your skin will start glowing like never before.

MY VIEW ABOUT WEEKEND OR TWO DAY JUSTJUICING IS DON’T EVEN BOTHER YOU WILL FLOCK YOUR BODY WITH MORE TOXINS AND INCREASE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS TOO MUCH (A GLASS OF JUICE CONTAINS AS MUCH SUGAR AS A GLASS OF COKE)

I

Instead sensible eating using fresh organic ingredients, a well balanced diet eliminating sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol is the perfect way to start. The idea is to help clients achieve long lasting results and to eliminate bad habits. So who needs a detox and what does it entail. Many clients that myself and my team see actually have a digestive tract with is 10 years older than their actual age. The biological age of an individual is dependant on the health of the tissues. If the system is toxic, the cells cannot absorb nutrients properly, are oxygen starved and die more quickly which means a person can be 30 but have the biological age of a 40 year old. Symptoms such as tiredness, sluggishness, bad breath, skin problems, headaches, premature ageing, brain fog, insomnia , et are all inability to cope with stress etc. classic signs of toxicity. Clearing the body of toxins not only reduces a persons biological age but the energy saved getting rid of toxins means more

energy, better sleep, dewy skin, bright eyes, a flat tummy and just about everything improved. So in addition to an optimally functioning digestive system, the body is better able to absorb nutrients from food supplement and supplements. I specially developed The Organic Pharmacy 10 day detox system to help support the body through all the steps of detoxification. During detox the liver, kidneys and skin need extra nutrients to be able to do their job properly and of course the star of the programme is our Det Detox Capsules which I formulated 12 years ago and have used successfully on thousands of clients over the years. Here I'd like to share 2 case studies just to show how powerful and effective Detox is for both men and women. I recommend it 4 times a year at the change of every season to keep the body in tip top shape. Margo Marrone Founder The Organic Pharmacy

We ask... is it really possible to earn a full time wage only working part time ? Samantha Jones from Kent, was a Christian Dior Makeup Specialist. Her 12 month goal was to replace working full time with doing permanent makeup part time... without earning any less. After speaking to lots of permanent makeup companies she decided to train 1 on 1 with Katy Jobbins at The Permanent Makeup Training Academy. Here is what she has to say during her initial training course... «Katy promised me at the beginning of my training that after my very first day with her, I would be able to permanently do a perfect set of brows... as good as someone who had been doing them for 15 years! I didn’t quite believe her, but after seeing the pictures of eyebrows that had been done by a technician’s after 15 years experience & comparing them to mine... I actually think mine are better ! Katy is so amazing, she is so patient & I think just a really lovely person as well. She is so easy to talk to. I looked around at a lot of companies before coming here. I chose the ‘Permanent Makeup Training Academy’ as it was more personal, its one on one and you get the persons full attention & i think that, that is very, very important, especially for me. I wanted the best training that I could get, because it’s your starting point, it’s your foundation for starting your business. After looking into the competition I found that Katy’s company was the best. And after day one i was amazed, Katy is a genius. The course was everything I wanted and more. I thought I would be taught how to use the machine and all the basic things, but Katy has gone so in-depth with each procedure that I feel really confident that I can do it. She has gone step-by-step and really broken it down, it was amazing! She instils a lot of confidence in you. Katy has also just done my brows and I’ve now got the brows I have always wanted. I’m made up, I’m so happy. 6 months later and how is Samantha getting on ? «I’ve been really busy, everyone’s been loving their permanent makeup. I am now making the same amount of money that I was on in full time work only having to work par time. I get much more time at home, spend much more time with my partner & my family which is relly good. I’m so happy and so pleased with what I’m doing & because everyone is so happy with their treatments, it just makes me feel really, really good about myself. It’s great, I love it!» It

Here at Gatineau we believe training is also important as it activates new ideas, reinforces Gatineau’s powerful philosophy and enhances knowledge of the products and the professional treatments. We believe this not only keeps staff motivated but it encourages future sales back in the workplace, especially as our 5 day Gatineau Initial Course includes some RETAIL SMART training. Stripping back to the basics we guide our students on how to behave with a client including first impressions, consultations, questioning techniques beh and closing the sale. With the knowledge the therapists have learnt about the brand; our trainers then facilitate this positively back into their workplace.

q&alegal The minimum wage (NMW) is now well established having been introduced in 1999 when the adult rate for employees aged over 22 was £3.60. Despite the fact it has been around for 14 years the minimum wage is still misunderstood by salon owners and employees as the following Questions demonstrate.

Q

I like my staff to arrive at work 15 minutes before their start time to make sure they are ready for their first client at 9am. One of my staff regularly arrives at 8.55 and I want to now take disciplinary action. Is there any reason I shouldn’t? I fully appreciate the reasons for the instruction and I am sure equally most staff want to arrive a little early to su prepare themselves for the day ahead .In the workplace rules I produce for salons I typically use the words “should be at their work station in time for the first client arriving” Most staff happily comply as in reality they can equally often get away a little early a the end of the day if it is quiet. However unless you pay the staff from 8.50 strictly speaking it is their time and you shouldn’t take disciplinary action against them. Equally though the employee can’t expect to have the benefits of an early finish. Interestingly an employer who paid the minimum wage recently lost a similar case and received a fine. The staff had to report 15 minutes early and weren’t paid. That meant that in a week they “worked “1 hour and 15 minutes unpaid and their hourly rate fell below the National minimum wage!! I know some salon owners issue a new contract when they increase pay rates. Is this a legal requirement? It isn’t really necessary. If the only change is the hourly rate it is sufficient to write to staff to confirm the new hourly rate and the date it is payable. Of course ideally get the employee to sign and return one copy for your retention. empl IF A QUESTION HAS TO BE SACRIFICED TO MAKE SPACE THEN SACRIFICE THIS ONE My staff work on “commission only” and are paid weekly. Sometimes if they have a quiet week they might earn less than the minimum wage but over the year it evens out and their annual pay is more than the NMW. Is this ok? I am afraid it isn’t. If staff work on commission only then they might not earn the NMW for every hour of every day. However they must receive the minimum hourly rate for the pay period. So as you pay weekly your pay period is a week. Assuming the staff work 40 hours then they must be paid 40x £6.19 gross ie £247.60 every week. You couldn’t comply CONTACT David Wright advises hundreds of salons across the UK For an all-inclusive fee of £225 plus vat per annum you are able to contact him directly with all your employment queries. He will produce your Contracts, set of policies and sends you a monthly newsletter full of helpful tips and advice. The fee is all inclusive no matter how many times you need him. INFO@DAVIDWRIGHTPERSONNEL.CO.UK Will the minimum wage go up again on 1st October? In my contract it says pay rates are reviewed on 1st December does this mean I don’t have to pay the new rates? The new rates were announced in April and will increase as follows on 1st October The rate is the legal minimum which can be paid and over rides anything you might have in your contract. Therefore to answer the question YES you do have to pay the new rate from 1st October. My apprentice has qualified but isn’t ready for the shop floor. She has agreed in writing to accept £1 an hour less than the minimum wage for the first 6 months, are there any risks in this? Yes there are a number of risks. Firstly at any time she can claim she is being paid under the NMW and recover the arrears. More importantly she can report you to the NMW wage body, or a third party can or they can inspect you. Over 700 employers were prosecuted in 2012/13 and the fine is up to £5,000. Over 26,000 employees recovered back pay in the same year having been paid below bel the NMW rate. This isn’t just a risk to large employers it affects all employers. Indeed the NMW body are naming and shaming employers and the first prosecution was a salon owner. I want all my staff to come in for training on a Sunday on a quarterly basis. It will be unpaid as it is for their benefit but one of the team has queried whether I can force them to attend? I am sure the staff will benefit from the training but it would be unusual for the salon not to derive any benefit! Legally the staff can refuse to attend if it is in their own time. If you have some clause in your rules or Contract that they must attend periodic training days then this will be different but you must offer either pay or time back in lieu. Indeed one of the prosecutions in p 2012 was for an employer who did exactly what you are doing ie required staff to attend a days training unpaid. It was clearly work and they were paid less than the NMW ie they received nothing.

Interview Paul Clements Director, Public Performance Sales, PRS for Music As a new salon owner what should I know about PRS for Music and how closely do I need to work with them? If music is ever played on your premises for customers or staff; for example through radio, TV, CD, MP3 or computer speakers or at live events, this is considered a ‘public performance’. The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 states that you need to get permission from the copyright holder to ‘perform’ music in public and a music licence grants you this permission. The money collected from these licences is paid back to members of PRS for Music; the songwriters, composers and publishers of the music. Salon owners can call 0800 068 4828 to speak to our licensing team for a bespoke quote or to find out more. Lines are open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Or for more information they can visit http://www.prsformusic.com What licences are needed? PRS for Music collects and distributes licence fees for the use of musical compositions and lyrics on behalf of songwriters, composers and music publishers. PPL collects and distributes licence fees for the use of recorded music on behalf of recored companies and performers. In most instances a music licence is required from both organisations when you play recorded music in public. Who decides how much PRS for Music should charge for a licence? PRS for Music currently has over 40 tariffs tari applying to different types of premises and events. The tariffs take into account the nature and extent of music use in different premises and events. Wherever possible, we agree our charges with national trade associations or representative bodies from particular sectors. PRS for Music tariffs and the terms and conditions of its licences are subject to referral to and scrutiny by the Copyright Tribunal. How can the use of music help a salon? A recent study by Music Works revealed that 6 out of 10 hairdresser clients (61%) are more likely to return on a regular basis to an environment that they find welcoming and relaxing, so it goes without saying that return visits are crucial in establishing a successful salon. Playing music in hair and beauty salons can relax customers and create more of a welcoming atmosphere. If customers enjoy the music, they have a more pleasant experience, thus they are more likely to return and recommend the business to others. What about actual income, how can music boost this for salons? Background music in salons can actually increase productivity, productivit acting as a dominant motivator for employees. Music Works revealed in their study that 85% of salon staff say that listening to good music at work makes them much happier and 1 in 3 would be less likely to take time off sick if good music is being played at work. Sarah Cross, Hairdressers Journal resident customer loyalty expert, claims that “it is five times cheaper to retain clients that it is to acquire new ones”, and furthermore “20% of loyalty programme members will account for 80% of your profits”. That’s not to say that salons should not drive for new clients, however it is crucial for them to maintain their current customer base to be profitable. http://www.prsformusic.com http://www.musicworksforyou.com

TRENDY TREATMENTS WHAT IS ULTHERAPHY ?

Our faces can tell many stories, and while wrinkles might say 'experience,' droopiness can say 'tired.' Surgery has always been an option, but now there's Ultherapy, a non-surgical ultrasound treatment for counteracting the effects of time and gravity on your skin. The beauty of this 30-60 minute face and neck treatment is that it uses the body's own regenerative response to gently and gradually restore memory to the skin and underlying tissue support.Focused ultrasound energy triggers the body's natural healing response, resulting in new and improved collagen support and gradual firming, tightening and actual lifting of skin tissue over time. The use of FDA-cleared ultrasound technology enables physicians, for the first time, to see and then treatThe deepest support layers of the skin addressed in surgery without disrupting the uppermost layers of skin. While the results do not duplicate the results of surgery, Ultherapy's gradual improvements make it a compelling option for those who are not quite ready for surgery.

Regardless of time of year or season, customers expect safe and effective treatments. Customers also request useful, practical skin care advice. But if I am honest about the consultation skills demonstrated by many therapists who walk through the doors of The International Dermal Institute, I would have to say that most lack the confidence, h knowledge and communication skills to carry out the process with the client effectively. And only a handful will adapt treatments or recommendations appropriately. Creating customized treatments following an in-depth discussion with a client is a skill that must be learnt and practiced. Many business owners believe that client experience Ma is primarily influenced by costly extras from unique tea blends to expensive décor. Whilst these are enhancing and will certainly add to the experience, the client’s rather demanding expectations are based on much simpler ideals – prioritize me and value me. The cornerstone of meeting these demands is a thorough consultation. It puts the client at the centre of consult their own experience and builds around them. Great treatments or helpful advice is dependent on knowing who is in the skin. What are the critical inclusions? How do you assess whether your current protocol is meeting the needs of the twenty first century customer? Compare these six essential questions with your current consultation to evaluate effectiveness. These are not exhaustive but capture the central information that ensures safe practice. They also get to the root of how the client feels right now. Each allows you an opportunity to probe further about diet and lifestyle as appropriate. 1. Do you have any current health or medical conditions? 2. Are you taking any medications or supplements? 3. Are you pregnant or trying to become pregnant? Or due for your menstrual period?

52

4. Do you have any known allergies? Have you experienced any reactions or rashes before? 5. Can you rate you stress level on a scale of 1-5? 1 being low and 5 being high. 6. How do you feel today? Do you have pain anywhere? If you are intending to perform a skin treatment or offer advice about skin add these four questions. 1. What are you currently using at home to look after your skin? 2. What concerns you most about your skin? 3. Have you had a skin treatment before? 4. What would you like me to prioritize or leave out of o the treatment today? Now take your protocol and experience it like a client. The repercussions of allowing vague cursory consultations are significant; the rise of sensitivity and allergies demand that we take client safety seriously. Although there is no guarantee against skin responses, it is entirely possible to be fully informed about individual customers, provide a truly in client-centric experience, and avoid costly service recovery in the majority of cases. The strategy of booking therapists back to back every hour on the hour - makes no business sense if offering a professional, customer-focused service is a priority. To avoid customers feeling short-changed by swallowing up treatment time, request they come in 15 minutes prior to their appointment to fill out a consultation card and have time to discuss requirements with the therapist. Don’t forget verbal consultation with walk in clients wishing to buy products. Just because they are not having a treatment should not mean less professionalism on your part. pro Without the humble consultation, you cannot cement client return and build the essential reputation that will differentiate you from your competitors. The best experiences are personalized ones based on accurate information and not assumption.

Dr Mark Hughes of The Harley Street Dental Group is keen to reassure anyone who may have any risks or symptoms which concern them «By using this new blue light technology we can identify abnormalities in the tissue which may indicate the presence of oral cancer completely non-invasively - there is no need to apply unpleasant stains or take a sample of tissue. When people are anxious the last thing they need is to be subjected to an invasive or unpleasant test». NINE OUT OF TEN dental patients would like to be checked for oral cancer during their check ups. When considering the staggering facts about oran cancer, it is of little surprise - the new cases and deaths in the UK caused by oran cancer more than double those of cervical cancer per annum. Early detection is one of the keys to upping survival rates. When ea the five year survival rate is 80-90%, instead of the diagnosed early, 52% that the 65% of the country who are diagnosed later face. The earlier the detection, the more likely it will be that the cancer can be treated in a far less invasive way. Given that the mortality rate of oral cancer has not decreased in three decades and that there has been a close to fivefold increase in oral cancer patients under the age of 40 without any traditional risk facto factors, the importance of undergoing oral examinations on a regular basis cannot be overstressed. Whilst an examination with the naked eye can detect some abnormalities, thanks to the revolutionary hand-held VELscope device, far fewer cases are missed, as it has a far higher success rate at detecting abnormal tissues, pre-malignant dysplasia and even oral cancer. During clinical tests, of the 620 patients screened, 28 lesions and 5 dysplasias were missed by the naked eye. The Velscope, however, missed one.

the different fluorescence responses to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue. Healthy tissue typically appears as a bright apple-green glow, while suspicious regions are identified by a loss of fluorescence and therefore appear dark. An optional digital camera then allows for a photograph of suspected abnormalities for further examination, whilst offering the added benefit of digital document documentation. It is also, remarkably, cordless, compact and affordable, despite being the most powerful tool available for assisting in the discovery of oral abnormalities. The Velscope can also aid with the discovery of other oran conditions. It is the only non-invasive device clinically proven to help discover oral disease and many other physical conditions such as periodontitis, halitosis, ingivitis and stomatitis, which can all have an effect on su as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and systemic health issues such strokes, despite not always being considered a factor. CONTACT DETAILS: T 0207 636 5981 W www.harleystreetdentalgroup.org

Providing an enhanced oral health assessment with the addition of a Velscope as an option will offer new and existing patients the opportunity to gain a greater degree of autonomy in their health choices. It will also promote the practice as a progressive, dynamic one offering the latest technologies and ensuring the peace of mind th that comes as a practitioner from providing a complete package of oral healthcare. Using a Velscope couldn’t be easier - it simply provides a noninvasive examination by emitting a safe blue light into the oral cavity that excites the tissue from the surface of the epithelium through to the basement membrane and into the stroma beneath, causing it to fluoresce. The clinician operating the Velscope can then see

Lawyer by Day and International Artist by Night! Serena Kern is a Swiss-Indian artist, Growing up in the mountains of Southern India, Serena Kern lends this influence to her music and beauty regime. WHAT IS YOUR BEST BEAUTY ADVICE I always feel (and probably look) best on days that follow a good night’s night sleep and when I have had plenty of water to drink. WOULD YOU EVER CONSIDER PLASTIC SURGERY I think plastic surgery is a major life decision and like any major decision, I would only make it having conducted a rigorous risk benefit analysis. Having said that, I personally would only consider plastic surgery if I had a medical condition which plastic surgery could help alleviate. WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS ON EXTREME BEAUTY TREATMENTS LIKE BOTOX I think when it comes to extreme beauty treatments, what one decides depends on how much importance you place on aesthetic beauty and how much you are willing to risk for it. BEST LOW PRICE BEAUTY PRODUCT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND TO A FRIEND A salt and vodka exfoliator from LUSH. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST BEAUTY NO NO Leaving makeup on at night. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE SPA MyfavouriteSPA is called “Les Bains de Lavey” and is located in the French speaking part of Switzerland. MyfavouriteS WHAT ARE YOUR FEELING ON ORGANIC BEAUTY PRODUCTS I still subscribe to some of the old natural Indian beauty treatments. For instance henna mixed with half a lemon, some yogurt and coffee powder is a great hair conditioner. According to my Grandma (who is very knowledgeable on these matters) the yogurt and henna act to moisturise the hair while the coffee prevents the henna from colouring the hair. WHICH REGULAR BEAUTY TREATMENT DO YOU UNDERTAKE I exfoliate my face once a week and I find this helps to lock in moisture when I moisturise afterwards.

HOW DO YOU RELAX AFTER A HARD DAY find that doing my vocal exercises or writing music is arelaxing outlet for me, particularly after challenging days at work WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 BEAUTY MUST HAVES Eye makeup remover from Boots; No.7 Day and Night moisturisers Eye pencil My hair straightener Nail polish remover AND FINALLY HOW DO STAY LOOKING SO HEALTHY Like I said, the days I look and feel the best are on days that follow a good night’s sleep
