AWARENESS AND ADVOCACY OF CLIMATE CHANGE

The graphic represents abstraction of mapping flow of people across a public square in Ahmedabad.

1. DATA VISUALIZATION

Hurtle Mapping Squirrels at the Public Square: Municipal Market, Ahmedabad Squirrels are regular visitors here and are fed by shopkeepers every morning in the central open space. They are usually observed at early mornings running up-down and around the trees in the central space. Their movement is reduced to nil around late mornings due to visitors’ and traffic noise. The designer observed a squirrel every day for one month. The map represents the abstraction of their movement on the tree around their food. Similar documentation has been done for pigeons, crows, dogs, and elephant at the same urban square to understand the variations of movement patterns and the impact of human presence on animals around the square.

Fearful

Mapping Pigeons at the Public Square: Municipal Market, Ahmedabad Pigeons are the regular visitors here and are fed by shopkeepers every morning in the central open space. The pigeons are usually observed at early mornings taking lower flights around the food; before fleeing from the location around late mornings due to visitors’ and traffic noise. The designer observed the pigeons every day for one month. The above map represents the abstraction of their flights around their food before they flee. Similar documentation has been done for squirrels, crows, dogs, and elephant at the same urban square to understand the variations of movement patterns and the impact of human presence on animals around the square.

Warming Enhanced Green House Effect Greenhouse gases emitted by human made sources for example; factories, transports, air-conditioners etc, are the primary factors causing climate changes. The above graph, represents the increase of various greenhouse gases from 1990-2010. There can be seen a consistent increase in the proportion and the number of gas balls. The line symbolizes the possibilities of resolving the issue. With an increase in the balls the difficulty in reconciling also increases. (According to World Resources Institute: Climate Analysis Indicators Tool 1990-2010)

Disappearance Glacier Retreat – A Warning Glaciers are an important resource for fresh water. The Gangotri Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the Himalayan Mountains and is the source of the Ganges River. The Ganges is the most important source of fresh water and electricity in India and Bangladesh. The above illustration shows the disappearance of glaciers at Gangotri. (According to a report by the Working Group on Himalayan Glaciology of the International Commission for Snow and Ice: 1999)

Bare

Deforestation Forests play significant role in mitigating climate change as they act as carbon sinks. The illustration explains the data of forest area loss from 2000-2016. It can be seen that the loss has increased at an alarming rate of almost three-fold in the time span of 16 years. Deforestation results in habitat loss, change in land use which also adversely affects the eco system of the earth. (Data credits: The World Bank)

Resurrect Story of dying lakes

The interlinked systems of lakes are one of the most important sources of fresh water. Urbanization and its impacts such as hardscape, depleting ground water, illegal mining, contamination etc. are killing these systems slowly. The illustration explains the depleting system and opportunities of the revival through different tints and shades. (Inspired from the story of Puttenahalli Neighborhood Lake Improvement Trust)

Blurred VIsions: Heading towards Pessimum We, the Humans have intervened with the existing ecosystem of our planet and degraded it to power our modern lives. These intrusions are causing unforeseen and unfortunate changes around the globe costing lives of millions. Statistics and data provided by various institutions suggest that we are leading to disastrous and serious consequences that await our future generations. The illustration suggests a dark end of our planet if we continue on the path of global warming.

Lost

Labyrinth of our choices TThe maze suggests the decisions taken by a layman in his/her life. The grey in the maze suggests the easiest choice which has devastating effects on our planet. The shadow path suggests its alternative which is a step towards mitigation. While the transition of green is the most important as it symbolizes the awareness in the layman which affect their decisions. These decisions are progression to acknowledge and enhance the existing eco system.

Bleaching Ocean Acidification

One of the consequences of the warming oceans is Ocean Acidification. It has a crucial impact on the bio-diversity of the ocean, especially the coral reef. The colorful illustration suggests the interlinked structure of the natural ecosystem of the oceans. While the monochrome illustration shows the aftereffect of forced human intrusion, killing and bleaching of coral reefs damaging the ecosystem of the ocean.

Timeline Evolution of a City

The above sketch represents evolution of the city from the post-agricultural revolution to the present. Agricultural villages evolved into towns due to industrialization. The landscapes disappeared, and infrastructure increased rapidly. With the support of technological advancements, the structures grew bigger, while the green spaces grew smaller. The open end in the timeline suggests its continuity from the present to the future.

Poshe

Shoe Abstraction The composition was designed using poshe as a technique, manipulating elements of a shoe. Several drawings of different perspectives of shoes and its elements were made. These were manipulated to create an abstraction. This abstraction was divided into tiny squares, thereafter the squares were rearranged to create the composition shown above.

Sea Level Rise A free flowing translucent hindrance is added at 1200mm. The vistors have to pass through the installation by bending. The free flowing surface has several holes where one can stand straight and look at the installations and information explaining sea level rise.

3. ARCHITECTURE

Museum on Climate Change

“The planet is heating up – and fast. (National Geographic) A deployable museum on climate change is proposed. The museum attempts to

create evocative and transcendent experiences for the visitors primarily through architectural interventions. The museum structure focuses to be environmentally appropriate, low energy and cradle to cradle design to cause minimal impact on the surroundings. Programmatically, the museum intends to explain the causes, consequences, mitigation, and adaption of climate change to its visitors. Furthermore, it aims to encourage, educate and propagate sustainable lifestyle to its visitors.

Shipping Container to Design Module The shipping container is dismantled into various elements and redesigned as desired design module. The dismantling and reassembling make ease in transportation also homogeneity of the elements facilitate in easy and quick assembly. Advantages of shipping containers are mentioned below to understand why it is an ideal material for the project.

Natural Cooling System Water is poured from the above pipe to cool the clay tubes, which helps in cooling the air that enters the museum through convection. This system not only cools, but also humidifies and purifies the air.

Day light capturing lens Tubing of reflective material Solar electric module Fixture

Day Light Harvesting The sunlight is captured through lens and transferred to tubing which delivers 99.7% of light captured. The light charges Photovoltaic panel and stores the power for the fixture.

The museum attempts to educate the people regarding causes, consequences and mitigation of climate change. The theme to explain each subject is different as the designer aims to explain it through cognition additional to the informative exhibition.

Enhanced Green House Effect Translucent balls are tied with rope creating a mesh. Initially the mesh is near the roof symbolizing natural green house effect, going forward the mesh becomes more complex and comes towards the floor symbolizing the enhanced green house effect due to human intervention making it difficult to walk through it.

Urban Farms: An intervention in the city The

presentation

drawing

explains

the proposal of urban farms connecting to various urban structures as an attempt to create community spaces vertically. The farms are partly used for farming while a part of it is incorporated as a recreational space. This intervention would encourage social interactions, growing your own food, increasing the green space and creation of renewable energy.

Leisure

The above rendering and design are

done as part of my internship at Dustudio, Auroville.

This magnificent piece of architecture at Badami, Karnataka is an evidence of extraordinary aesthetic taste of our forefathers.
