welcome

he start of a new year lends itself to goal setting. For an organization like the library, that takes the form of a strategic plan. If you have picked up a copy of our plan at the library or read it online, you'll notice that the main focus of our work is on you, the patron. The 2020 strategic plan is divided into three areas of focus — facilities, services and staff — each with its own goals. The overall question we are asking is "How do we fill the needs of our community?" Part of that is ensuring our spaces are useful and our staff are knowledgeable. Another part is making sure the programs and classes we offer and the materials available for check out are valuable to you. Your opinions on library services and what you think is needed are welcome. Fill out a feedback form, use the Suggest a Purchase form on our online catalog or send me an email with your ideas. The Accelerating Expanding Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, And Einstein’s Cosmological Constant, or Why Jim Peebles was Awarded Half of the 2019 Physics Nobel Prize

Spring Chess

Dark energy is the leading candidate for the mechanism that is responsible for causing the cosmological expansion to accelerate. In this non-technical talk, Bharat Ratra will describe the astronomical data which persuades cosmologists that (as yet not directly detected) dark energy and dark matter are by far the main components of the energy budget of the universe. He will review how these observations have led to the development of a quantitative “standard” model of cosmology that describes the evolution of the universe from an early epoch of inflation to the complex hierarchy of structure seen today. He will also discuss the basic physics, and the history of ideas (many developed by Jim Peebles), on which this model is based.

Playing the game of chess offers players a unique opportunity for lifelong learning including strategy, tactics and concentration. Each week, chess instructors Dwight Ford, of Anatoly Karpov School of Chess, and Glenn Gustitus will support players with handouts and encourage the use of strategy through instruction before open play. While playing, you will learn common patterns, how to methodically build a position, set traps and analyze variations depending on your level of play.
