as it ever occurred to you that most of the gifts dads receive on Father’s Day are designed to keep him working harder than he was before? For example, a new set of golf clubs sends him out on the green to play a rugged 18 holes in the heat of a summer day. When he arrives home, tired and weary, he doesn’t want to hurt Number One daughter’s feelings by ignoring her gift. So he washes the car with his pistol-style hydroextension, jet-spray car washing brush and polishes it until it gleams with his hard-finish simonizing wax. He might even be tempted into trying out his garden tools— deluxe ball-bearing shears, contour-curve hedge shears and a 3 HP power mower for the miniature green he calls his lawn.

It would be so much easier that way. My husband looked back nostalgically to the days when the kids mowed him under with home-made gifts and cards. The best tie he ever received was as stiff as a board. In fact it was a board! Our son sawed it out of a two-inch chunk of wood. It was accompanied by a card which read, “Dere Father. Lots of luck in your cerere if you got one. Luv, Mark.” Instead of showering him with work-saving devices this year, why not give him just what he

Dead Crows

Researchers found over 200 dead crows near Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts. However, during the detailed analysis it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car. The Bird Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. But why so many more crows killed by trucks than by cars? The conclusion was that while all the lookout crows could say " Cah," none could say "Truck.”.

Brain Teaser

You are driving your car in a wild stormy night. You pass by a bus station, and you see three people waiting for the bus: an old lady who looks as if she is about to die, a doctor who had once saved your life and a man/woman you have been dreaming to be with. You can only take one passenger in your car. Which one will you choose? You could pick up the old lady. She is going to die, and thus you should save her first. You could take the doctor, because he once saved your life. This will be the perfect chance to pay him back. But do you really want to give up the chance to be with your perfect love? Before reading on, do you have a better solution? Best Answer: Give the car key to the doctor. Let him take the old lady to the hospital. Stay and wait for the bus with the man/woman of your dreams.

Love’s Labour Lost By Sharon McGregor

owhere does hope spring as eternal as in the breast of a gardener when the new seed catalogues have arrived. I had my nose buried in a catalogue and my mind in a garden furrow trying to decide between Pontiac and Viking seed potatoes when my daughter Hilary sat down on the footstool in front of me. She looked me straight in the eye and said "One word, Motherpotato beetles." "That's two words," I protested, "And what on earth are you talking about?" "You told me last fall that if you ever again considered planting potatoes in the garden, I was to say 'potato beetles' to bring you to your senses." "So what are a few potato beetles?" I retorted. "A few?" she laughed-a touch maniacally, I thought. "People walking past our garden thought you were developing a new species of flowering plant, they were so thick." "Well, maybe I had a few problems with the potatoes," I agreed dispiritedly. "But hey", I said more cheerfully, "weren't those fresh peas terrific? Maybe we'll put the entire garden in peas." "Ok," said Hilary, "Time for a reality check." She pulled her stool closer and shoved a photo in front of my face. "What's this?' I asked. "It looks like the junkyard Old Man Tate used to have on the edge of town." "You also told me if you ever decided to raise peas again, I was to show you this picture and if that didn't convince you, I was to

lock you in the bathroom till the fever passed. You were very insistent at the time . . . you even made me swear on all your unborn grandchildren that I wouldn't let you plant peas again. Remember the trouble we had with the birds and all the gadgets, scarecrows and metal pans you used to string across the garden to frighten them away?

The only thing you scared was the cat. He left home and never came back till the garden was dug up in the fall."

"How come you have such a great memory for all this," I grumbled, "when you can never remember to take out the garbage for the 30 seconds it takes you to walk from one end of the kitchen to the other? "Still," I agreed reluctantly, "I guess you're right about the potatoes and the peas. Instead, we can redo the garden with smaller vegetables. Remember the taste of fresh salad veggies and carrots right out of the ground? And think of the money we'll save." Hilary got that look again and handed me another piece of paper. "You told me to be sure and show you this if I still hadn't convinced

you. See that list of expensesderris dust, cutworm powder, nitrogen, fertilizer, new garden hose to replace the one you cut, repairing the hole in the tool-shed, sprinklers, tools, scarecrows, tilling, etc. You said this list was the reason we couldn't afford to go to Disneyland." I sighed. Of course she was right. Gardening is like having a baby; shortly after the birth, you forget just how bad the labour pains were. Selective memory is the only thing that keeps women propagating the species and prevents all homeowners from paving their backyards. I closed the catalogue reluctantly, but as I tossed it aside, the heading on the back caught my eye. "Roses, roses," it proclaimed. Now how much trouble can a few rosebushes be? I began to tremble with excitement. I could have the whole garden reworked and make a little cobblestone path and surround it all with trellises and trellises of roses.

Storm Approaching

A boy was helping his mother bring the clothes in off the line as a storm threatened. As they brought in the last armload and closed the door, the boy waved his hand at the heavens and said, "Okay God! Let'er go!"

Big Five-O Adventure

By Helga Gruendler-Schierloh

Arriving at our destination just as the sun went down, we checked in with park management, retrieved the key for our cabin, and then followed a winding dirt road into the woods. After passing the bonfire of a lady with a popup camper, we spotted two tiny dwellings to our right.

and our dog was stuck in a strange place with a space heater running full blast. Cold, frustrated, and scared, my daughter began to cry, which was a good thing.

and the earth suddenly gave way. I hit the gas. The wheels didn’t budge, but the grinding transmission alerted my daughter. She rushed out of the cabin, slamming the door shut behind her. “I’m stuck,” I yelled. She nodded. “Let’s see, if we can rock it.” I gunned the engine, she pushed. She pushed, I gunned the engine. The car only sank deeper into the sand. “We’ll get help tomorrow,” I said. “Let’s go in and call it a day.” We reached the door. It didn’t open. Tylke Pigeon 2015.qxp_Layout 1 2015-03-14 8:36 PM “Give me the key,” I said. My daughter’s face tensed. “Oh, it’s inside.” We were locked out, the car was unusable, it was pitch-black, the temperature was dropping—

It brought out the rescuer in me. As her mother, I am supposed to protect her.

Searching the car, I found a flashlight. Then we went to visit the lady camper we had seen on our way in. The woman graciously directed us to a nearby pay phone and the emergency numbers posted there. I called the police who told me to dial 911. The 911 operator reassured me that “yes” the park office was now closed for the weekend, and “yes” they would try to track down the ranger, and “no” they didn’t have any authority to enter park cabins. The operator’s voice suddenly faded into something like “. . . we’ll call you back” and then the connection was Page 1 gone. Staring at the dead phone, I heard a faint, “Mommy?” In the dim glow of the flashlight, my daughter’s small face looked drawn, her eyes wide with fear. She inched closer.

Typical Mother

Giuseppe excitedly tells his mother he's fallen in love and that he is going to get married. He says, 'Just for fun, Mama, I'm going to bring over three women and you try and guess which one I'm going to marry.' The mother agrees. The next day, he brings three beautiful women into the house, sits them down on the couch & they chat for a while. He then says, 'Okay, Mama, guess which one I'm going to marry?' Mama says immediately, 'The one on the right.” 'That's amazing, Mama. You're right. How did you know? ' Mama replies: 'I don't like her." - submitted by Phil Cox

“Everything will be all right,” I said pulling her to a nearby bench. When I tightened my arm around her, I felt her shiver. Wondering if that promised call would ever come, I considered our options. We could ask the lady camper for shelter or we could spend the night in the car, turning the engine on and off. We had not unloaded everything, and there was a blanket in the backseat. I thought of Bandit being alone with that glowing space heater. I had to do something, like contact the park office. Although it was supposed to be closed, I felt driven to call there anyway. After positioning the flashlight next to the phone, I dialed, ever so careful not to mess up. Time was of the essence, and my pocket change was limited. It rang. Once, twice—then a man’s voice said, “Park Ranger’s office.” I screamed, “You’re really there?”

“Yes, I’m here.” He was nice enough not to ask if I was all there. But then, it would have been difficult for him to say anything else, since I was gushing, desperately trying to make him understand the urgency of our situation. He let me finish, then simply said, “I’ll be there shortly.” About ten minutes later, he arrived. No man had looked that good to me in a long time. “We never answer that phone over the weekend,” he said. “I was leaving to go home when you called. It rang and I just reached for it. Good thing I did, huh?” He unlocked our door. Then he pointed at our car. “You’re in way deep, aren’t ya? I’ll bring the tractor in the morning and pull you out.” He grinned. “Are you OK now?” “She’s over the hill,” my daughter volunteered. I nodded. “She’s right, I’m fifty today.

Warning: Lake levels may be lower than shown since depths were taken in the past.

That’s why we are here. I wanted to do something different.” The man’s laughter rang through the dark forest. Walking back to his truck, he turned and waved, “Happy Birthday!” Inside the cabin, my daughter sank into my arms. We held onto each other and giggled hysterically. It felt wonderful to be safe and warm. After unpacking the cake my daughter had baked for me the day before, we lit a tiny candle. As the yellow light flickered and threw a shadow across the barren walls of the little room, I felt very happy and grateful. The remainder of the weekend turned out exactly the way I had pictured it: quiet walks through the woods, simple meals, intimate chats and lots of laughter with my daugh ter. I couldn’t have wished for a more perfect milestone birthday celebration.

heriff Estelle Moon finished her inspection of Laura Taylor’s bedroom window. “No sign of forced entry. You sure it was locked?” “I thought so,” the attractive sixtyish woman said. “But it was wide open when I returned home, and my jewelry was gone. So was my lovely music box.” She wiped away a tear. “It was the last present my late husband ever gave me.” They heard the front screen door bang. “Might be Deputy Howie.” Estelle said. But as they turned down the hallway and into the living room they instead saw an athletic-looking gray-haired woman in sweats standing in the foyer. “Laura! Those two police cars out front...the cop poking around the cactus in your yard with a flashlight…. What’s happened?”

“Oh, Maggie, while I was at bingo tonight someone broke in through my bedroom window and stole my jewelry.”

“That’s awful!” Maggie looked at Estelle. “You’re our new lady sheriff, aren’t you? Have any leads?” “The investigation’s just started, ma’am.” “Oh. Of course. And no need to “ma’am” me. Name’s Maggie. Laura, have you told the sheriff about that strange man who was in our neighborhood today?” “What strange— Oh, you mean that carpet cleaning salesman?” Laura picked up a brochure from the coffee table and

handed it Estelle. “That’s what he left. But that was this morning, not this evening.” “Still, you never know,” Maggie said. “And while I hate to suggest it, Laura, what about your niece? She knew you’d be out tonight. She heard you say no to Carl’s movie invitation, heard you say you’d already made plans to play bingo at the community center.” “Kathy may has issues, Maggie, but breaking in and stealing—” “She’s swiped stuff from you in the past.” “Well, yes, but….” Laura sank onto the couch, frowning. Voices sounded out side, and Deputy Howie entered with two people in tow. “Carl!” Laura exclaimed. “Kathy!” “No need to get up, Laura,” the lanky, silver-haired man said. “Deputy Howie has told us what happened. that’s all.” Kathy looked around at the suspicious faces. “Okay, it wasn’t me.” “If you could offer up an alibi,” Carl suggested, “that might help more.”

“Alibi?” Kathy balled her hands into fists. “Why should I need an alibi?

“That’s not—” “Or,” Kathy raged on, “what about the least likely suspect, Aunt Laura? What about you? Maybe nothing was stolen at all. Maybe you just hid the stuff somewhere and are hoping to rip off the insurance company.” “Why I never….” “Any of you could have done it!” Kathy screamed. And she raced out door. Beautiful Bug Hunters

By Myrna Pearman

arn Swallows are one of Alberta’s most beautiful birds. Unfortunately, these graceful and acrobatic swallows have the habit of sometimes choosing inconvenient places to nest (e.g., above backdoors, on stucco walls, in garages). The mess they create can make them unpopular with their human neighbours. Barn Swallows have had a long, interesting and complicated history with people. Prior to European settlement, they were restricted to nesting in caves and on cliff faces and other natural nesting sites. Settlers’ houses, barns and bridges offered new nesting opportunities while extensive land By Myrna Pearman clearing created additional habitat for foraging. the increased acreage of monoSo successful was their transi- crop agriculture reduces the availtion from natural to artificial nest- ability of foraging habitat. ing sites that their numbers and However, the cause of such a range increased significantly. widespread, precipitous decline Lucky 7seen Pigeon 2015.qxp_Layout 2015-03-09 9:33 PM Page 1 Today, they are seldom nestremains1 puzzling. ing far from human habitation; even remote outposts and cabins What scientists agree on is often support at least one or two that the magnitude and nesting pairs. geographic extent of The sobering news is that, declines are cause for although Barn Swallows are still one of the most familiar and conservation concern. widespread bird species on the planet (absent only from Ellis Bird Farm is proud to Antarctica), they face an uncertain future. Like all aerial insectivores, they are declining in number. In 2011, COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada) declared them to be a threatened species. Scientists first noticed population declines in the mid-1980s. Some local declines can be attributed to the reduction in the number of nesting sites because old open barns are disappearing and

host a healthy nesting population of Barn Swallows. The old grain elevator and calving barn, with their open windows and rough beams, provide ideal sites for the birds to raise their one or two broods a year. We are also pleased to see them nesting on the Wetland Centre as well as under the verandah of the new Visitor Centre. Unlike their cousins, the Tree Swallows and Purple Martins, which are gone by mid-August, Barn Swallows continue nesting well into September. Despite the mess they can cause when they nest in inappropriate spots, it is our hope that everyone will learn to welcome their presence. They can be encouraged to nest in suitable locations by placing a couple of nails or a small wooden triangle a few centimetres under an eave or other overhang, or by setting out a nesting cup. Check out our website (www.ellisbirdfarm.ca) for details. If they nest in a location where their mess is an issue, a small pail or piece of thin plywood or cardboard placed under the nest will intercept all droppings. This year, Ellis Bird Farm is embarking on a Barn Swallow education and conservation initiative in partnership with Bird Studies Canada. We have a new display at the site highlighting the plight of Barn Swallows, as well as information about how we as

Speaking English Properly

Verbs HAS to agree with their subjects. Prepositions are not p_Layout 1 2015-03-30 10:42 PM Page 1 words to end sentences with. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat) Also, always avoid annoying alliteration. Be more or less specific. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary. Also too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies. No sentence fragments. Contractions aren't necessary and shouldn't be used.

Foreign words and phrases are not apropos. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous. One should NEVER generalize. Comparisons are as bad as cliches. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc. One-word sentences? Eliminate. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake. The passive voice is to be ignored. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas.

Military Surplus Tactical & Survival Gear

RV • Decks • Boats • Upgrade incandescent bulbs to LED • Commercial quality lighting strips & accessories

Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice. Understatement is always the absolute best way to put forth earth-shaking ideas. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know." If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: Resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly. Puns are for children, not groan readers. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms. Even IF a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed. Who needs rhetorical questions? Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement. And the last one... Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.

An older woman recently returned from her home town in Saskatchewan and told a friend they'd spruced up the churchyard cemetery since her last visit several years past. "Lots of new greenery," she said. "And families are together now." "All together?" her friend asked, puzzled. "Well," the first replied, "years ago they never much worried where they buried someone

because everyone was a neighbor anyhow. They'd just dig a grave wherever it seemed to balance things. But they've redone it so people are with their children and grandchildren, instead of scattered." The friend was still puzzled. "You mean they exhumed all those people and reburied them?" "Oh my, no," was the reply. "We just shifted the headstones. Everyone agrees it looks ever so much nicer."

Camping in the great outdoors can be incredibly rejuvenating and a lot of fun. But it can also mean spending your Friday afternoons digging through the garage in search of the air pump, the cutlery set, and the cooler. Fortunately, packing everything and the kitchen sink is no longer necessary to ensure a relaxing weekend of camping with the luxuries of home.

The Yurts at Pigeon Lake Provincial Park provide campers with the opportunity to enjoy a night or two in the wilderness with the security and comfort of a temporary home. These raised, sturdy and insulated accommodations offer a cozy, private camping experience complete with cooking utensils, beds, furniture, a fridge, and a barbecue.

Enjoy the local wildlife from your personal deck or spend the evening star gazing through the yurt’s sunroof.

When the weather won’t hold up, the yurt will. Close the windows and settle in for a game of cards or plug in those iPod speakers for a private dance party! Enjoy quick and easy access to hiking trails, the lake shore, and a shower and washroom facility. Yurts are the perfect combination of a rustic tent and a luxurious RV, so book your stay in one today. These units vary in size and price to suit your needs. Helpful Guys

At Pigeon Lake Provincial Park, enjoy the beauty of the outdoors with the security & comfort of a temporary home - the Yurt.

The young woman sat in her stalled car, waiting for help. Finally two men walked up to her. “I’m out of gas,” she purred. “Could you push me to the gas station?” The men readily put their muscles to the car and rolled it several blocks. After a while, one looked up, exhausted, to see that they had just passed a filling station. “How come you didn’t turn in?” he yelled. “I never go there,” the girl shouted back. “They don’t have airmiles.”
