Fr. John Malloy, SDB
Fr. Larry Byrne, SDB
Fr. John Malloy died March 27, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco from complications arising from congestive heart failure just 10 days after celebrating his 91st birthday. Born March 17, 1922 in Berkeley, Fr. John joined the Salesian seminary in Richmond as a high school freshman. He attended college in Newton, New Jersey, where he majored in philosophy. After the war he was sent to Italy for his theological studies, and was ordained in 1950. During his 60 years as a Salesian priest, Fr. John was instrumental in founding Bishop Mora Salesian High School in Los Angeles, served as provincial for both the Western and Eastern provinces of the Salesians in the United States, and oversaw a number of renovations in various schools and parishes of the San Francisco Province. As Director and Principal of Salesian High School, Fr. John, together with Fr. Dave Purdy, was the driving force behind the school’s transformation from an all-boys program to co-educational instruction. His last major assignment was as Pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul Church in San Francisco from 1998 through 2007. His final years were spent in retirement at Salesian High School where he enjoyed attending the various sporting events and taking care of his canine companion “Zach.” The school has established a memorial scholarship fund to remember his memory and his dedication as a Salesian.
From August, 1974, until his death in March, 2012, Fr. Larry Byrne called Salesian High School his home. Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1923, Fr. Larry was educated in London and joined the Salesians in August, 1942, at Beckford, England. After his ordination in 1952, Fr. Larry continued his teaching ministry in Shrigley, England. He taught mathematics to high school students, and received his Masters in Education with a specialization in mathematics from London University in 1957. In 1966 Fr. Larry moved to California to be close to his sister and her family. Assigned to St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Fr. Larry taught mathematics for 8 years and helped coach the golf team. He came to Salesian High School in September, 1974, where he taught mathematics and coached golf, and ministered to St. Callistus Church in El Sobrante. After his retirement in 1991, Fr. Larry continued to make himself available to assist with math and tutoring. During the last six years of his life, Fr. Larry lived at Mercy Center in Oakland, where he graciously received visitors and spent most of the time in prayer for his former students.
