COURSE OBJECTIVE :
A narrative on Ahmedabad’s culture as reflected in food, in its architectural heritage, dress and fabrics, festivals, religious and social institutions, trade and markets, crafts, etc and which captures the characteristics of Ahmedabad or of the Ahmedabadi
A Visual Narrative:
• A narrative on chaula phalli, A lentil snack that is part of the Gujarati farsan • The narrative is based on the socio-economics of a micro-enterprise and the street-food culture of Ahmedabad.

Exercise in abstracting the visual and tactile attributes of chaula fali : • Explorations try to bring out the characteristics of chaula fali like its long rectangular shape and colour • The irreular contour of each fali • The tactile quality of the puffed up fali • Exploring three fundamentals of design such as texture, rhythm and composition • Chaula fali are long rectangular strips of dough which are deep fried, crisp, translucent and light weight • Using kite paper to get same property of chaula fali like same sound of crispness and translucency

• Explorations derived from a stage in the making of the chaula fali ie. the dough which is spread thin into a large circular shape called roti. • Several of the uncooked rotis are stacked in a big plate or thali in preparation for the next stage. • The lightness of the roti and the form of stacking them was interpreted in the following explorations.

Texture : • A literal interpretation of the chaula fali was attempted by shaping kite paper to simulate the three dimensional form of the fali

• The construction of “ tetra pak’s “ milk container was studied and the same structure of the tetrahedron was explored using varying lengths.
• A tetrahedral cushion :

Rhythm:
• Rhythm was derived abstracting the fali in stripes and interpreting the colours of the fali in monochrome. • Addition of an accent colour was tried.

• Trying to achieve the relief texture of chaula fali in stripes on paper.

• Exploring an abstraction of the fried snack by delineating the form of the fali. • Machine embroidery was chosen to translate the sketches into fabrics.

• Trying to achieve the relief texture of chaula fali and exploring ways to texturize the fabric with washing.

Finding applications for the explorations. • Striped surfaces for a cushion cover.
