This was St Neots first visit to Fernie Fields for 30 years having been beaten 4-1 in the League KO Cup on their last visit in October 1996, so this was appropriate revenge. The result extended St Neots’ current winning run to four matches and cemented their position in the play-off places in the league table four points behind leaders Aylestone Park but with a match in hand. Manager Cameron Mawer named an unchanged line-up for the first time since early August but made two second half substitutions. Sileby were a side in form having won three and drawn two of their last six league matches and St Neots had to be at their best after the break to return home with all three points. They also had man-of-the-match goalkeeper James Goff to thank for some vital saves both before they had scored and whilst they boasted only a one goal advantage over their hosts.
The first half was a cagey affair with both sides able to produce some impressive possession football without serious testing the opposition goalkeeper. In the first twenty minutes there were only two serious attempts on goal – Rob Parker releasing Rhys Thorpe on goal, but home keeper Dean Love saved well, and a long-range effort by Harvey Williams that flew wide. Gradually the contest opened-up with home striker Kenzie Cross testing James Goff, and at the other end Love was again in action bravely saving at the feet of Williams. A three-man St Neots move ended with Thorpe just off target, and Connor Furlong tested the home keeper after neat work by Mike Amaeshike. The tireless Thorpe shot across the face of goal after being played clear and the half ended with Sileby striker Nathan Burrows seeing his shot rebound from a post to be cleared.
The second half began with the home side on the offensive and St Neots had to funnel back and defend. Goff saved bravely at the feet of Lamin Jammeh and a searching cross by Josh Drain was cleared off the St Neots goal line. Another important save by Goff heralded a change in the pattern of play as the visitors began once again to string together their passes. On the hour an incisive break forward saw Kieran Barnes break down the left before pulling the ball back for Connor Furlong to thunder his shot past the home keeper to give St Neots the lead. Sileby replied with Burrows testing Goff and then the keeper kept the visitors ahead with a full length save to deny Drain. St Neots sent on Sam Willis for Williams and created several promising openings thwarted only by the offside flag. However, in the last ten minutes St Neots took full advantage as the host side appeared to flag. Hard-working Rhys Thorpe eventually slipped the offside trap collecting a lengthy clearance to add the second goal and the icing on the cake for the visitors came in the final minute when substitute Sam Willis was set up by Amaeshike for St Neots’ third goal.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR VISITORS - NORTHAMPTON
Today we have a rearranged fixture because Sileby’s first scheduled fixture here was on 7th December last year but that was postponed because heavy overnight rain rendered our pitch unfit for play This is to be Sileby’s first visit to St Neots Town FC since the 1994/95 season (yes 30 years ago!) when we were both members of the lower division of the United Counties League and Northampton Sileby were known as Northampton Vanaid. Of course, that means it is their first visit to the Premier Plus Stadium because their last visit to Town was to our original Rowley Park ground. In that memorable season – our first back at Senior level after moving to out new ground – we beat Vanaid 3-2 at home and 5-2 away in the league but in between those two matches we went to Northampton in the League Cup and were convincingly beaten 4-1 with Mike Phelan getting our consolation goal. Six former players featured on the scoresheet of our league victories in that first season and for the benefit of the historians reading this they were Steve Galbraith, Steve Brown, Paul Scott, David Albone, Andy Meeks, and Grant Ager.
However, now back to the current Sileby Rangers. Our two sides met in our first league meeting this season at Fernie Field on 12th October when our lads ran out 3-0 winners with Rhys Thorpe, Connor Furlong and Sam Willis on the scoresheet. Sileby are currently 12th in the league table with nine wins and five draws in their 25 completed league matches.Away from home Sileby have won four times – at Bugbrooke, Godmanchester, ON Chenecks, and most notably at Rugby Borough. At home in the league they held leaders Aylestone Park to a draw and they equalled their best home league victory of the season when they defeated Lutterworth Town 4-1. In the FA Cup they lost in an extra-preliminary round replay away at Boston Town and in the FA Vase they were beaten at home in a penalty shoot-out by their neighbours Northampton ON Chenecks. Meantime in the League KO Cup they travelled to Newark and Sherwood but lost 2-1 and to complete a quartet of first match cup defeats they were beaten 4-1 away at higher graded Brackley Town in the Northamptonshire Hillier Senior Cup.
Previous meetings of our teams:
YAXLEY FC (H)
01-02-2025
On what could prove a significant Saturday, St Neots were the only team in the top five of the league table to pick up a victory to take their lead at the top of the table to eight points. Elsewhere Aylestone Park, March Town and Hinckley all lost, and second placed Rugby Borough were held to a draw. However, the victory over visitors Yaxley was not as straightforward as the final scoreline suggests with St Neots not breaking through until the hour against a stubborn visiting side. The result saw St Neots record their sixth league double of the season as well as extending their goal difference to plus six over their nearest challengers. St Neots scorers had both been on the scoresheet in the earlier away league victory over Yaxley in August. Manager Cameron Mawer named an unchanged line up from the previous match despite having regular defender Charlie Bowen back in the squad.
The first half proved to be largely a one-way affair with St Neots dominating possession and the attacking play but lacking the final touch in front of goal. The visiting side suffered the loss of goalkeeper Max Rigby after just six minutes after he had acrobatically saved from Michael Amaeshike, but his deputy Quincey Shorunmu proved a more than adequate replacement with a string of confident saves to deny the home attack. Murphy Culkin saw a shot deflected and then set up Rhys Thorpe whose effort was off target, and despite constant superior possession the home side failed to find a breakthrough. In their first significant attack on the half hour Yaxley midfielder Denys Dushkin saw his effort blocked by a defender and then at the other end the replacement visiting keeper distinguished himself with two saves to deny Connor Furlong who was running riot down the right-hand side. Sam Willis saw his shot deflected and then the lively Kieran Barnes saw his first effort punched clear and second blocked on the goal line by a defender.
More of the same but with better finishing must have been the half time instruction for St Neots, and they responded with Harvey Williams dragging his finish wide after Furlong had rounded his marker. The important breakthrough came just before the hour when a St Neots corner was not cleared, and the hard-working Rhys Thorpe bundled the ball home from close range. His reward was to be substituted by Danny Baulk with the visitors reduced to ten men with Fayed Rhaman sin-binned after an exchange of views with the Referee. In a bid to boost their chances the visitors made a couple of attacking substitutions but this afforded St Neots more room and Baulk shot narrowly across the face of goal from a tight angle. Then, after 71 minutes, St Neots sealed their victory when Williams and the excellent Willis combined to set up Michael Amaeshike for his twelfth goal of the season. At 2-0 the St Neots victory was comfortable and there would have been further goals but for two excellent saves by Shorunmu to deny Baulk and Furlong.

The club was founded as Sileby Rangers in 1968 as the works team of the Sileby Engineering Company (named after the Leicestershire village of Sileby where it had been established). They initially played in Sunday leagues, and won the Northants Sunday Cup in 1975, having been runners-up two years earlier. They also reached the final (but failed to win) in 1979, 1983 and 1993.
In the mid-1950s the club joined the Northampton Town League. They won the title in 1989 and 1990 and finished second in 1991 and 1993. During this era, the club was known as Northampton Vanaid following a sponsorship deal.
In 1993, the club was promoted to the United Counties League, the first to do so from the Northampton Town league. In their first season in the division, they won the title and the Northants Junior Cup. However, they were not promoted to the Premier Division due to a lack of floodlights. They won the Junior cup again in 1997, and in 2000 were renamed Northampton Sileby Rangers. More Junior Cups were won in 2002 and 2003, beating Rothwell Corinthians in the final on both occasions. They won the division for a second and third time in 2002–03 and 2004-05 but were again not promoted.
The 2012–13 season saw Glenn Botterill lead the team to the United Counties League Division One championship ahead of AFC Rushden & Diamonds, by winning 30 out of their 36 league games. Finances for the club dried up at the beginning of the 2013–14 season, however, which resulted in a mass exodus of the title winning team and ultimately in Glenn Botterill resigning his position at the club.
At the end of the 2020–21 season the club were transferred to Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League.
