Welcome to the Fall 2017 Saint Paul Art Crawl! We want to welcome you to the Fall 2017 Saint Paul Art Crawl as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the St Paul Art Collective. Since 1977, the Art Collective has empowered St Paul artists of all genres to create and grow. Recognizing that art is essential for a healthy and vibrant community, the Art Collective runs and supports projects, initiatives and events throughout the year that increase the awareness of its artists, their work, and the crucial role they play in the greater cultural life in our area. With the number of participating buildings exceeding 30 and the number of visitors averaging around 38,000 for each semi-annual, three-day event, the Saint Paul Art Crawl is truly one of the premiere arts events in the Twin Cities. It has evolved from a fun weekend art event to a framework for creating and fostering important, interdependent relationships between the arts community and the residents and businesses of the city of St. Paul. St. Paul is a close-knit, vibrant and energetic art community that actively contributes to the greater Twin Cities cultural landscape. We want to thank all the participating artists, the sponsoring businesses and the hundreds of volunteers who work for months to stage this event for you. We hope you will continue to value locally produced art and that you appreciate the opportunity the Art Crawl gives you to meet face to face with the artists. If you are interested in supporting the arts and interacting with artists throughout the year, I encourage you to become a member of the St. Paul Art Collective. Member contributions will add to the growth of our wonderful community while providing you an enriching art experience. A special thanks to the overall sponsor of this year’s Art Crawls, St Paul Federal Credit Union. Enjoy the Saint Paul Art Crawl. Fall 2017 Poster Winner Jeannie May

Lowertown Commons

would sketch my daughter and do pencil sketches of friends and co-workers’ families, and eventually, I tried my hand at using acrylics. I loved the medium, the mixing of colors and the method involved. It was wonderful to see something translated into texture and colors that before were just shades of grey. Although I didn’t paint consistently, I continued to sketch because whether painting or sketching, art provided an outlet for me and helped to relieve the stress I experienced as an emergency room nurse.

I think all artists have an innate ability and drive to create art from the moment they can express their talent. I have always sketched pictures, or "doodles", of people, animals and places for as long as I can remember because I could lose myself in the faces, shapes and shades. I never thought of painting - art wasn't something that was encouraged as a young girl in Waco, Texas, growing up in the fifties and sixties. Even as a single parent in her 40s who chose to go back to school to become a registered nurse, I never lost my passion for art. I

4

At the age of 60, I was forced to retire from nursing due to a disability, and I found myself with an abundance of time to kill. My interest in painting was renewed again, but this time I wanted to try to translate to canvas the many ideas I had sketched on paper. Having moved to vibrant and colorful San Antonio, Texas, I didn't lack for inspiration and started to experiment with different styles of painting. I started painting on larger canvases - sketching out my ideas, adding in patterns and designs to my sketches, then transferring those to my canvas. The process and completion of a painting was always a relaxing exhilaration and music was an integral part of my creative process. I preferred alternative rock from artists like Imagine Dragons, Florence and The Machine, and the always soulful lyrics of David Gray to help fuel my imagination. With my daughter's encouragement, I started selling my art, and I found a wonderful venue in San Antonio to display and sell my work. My artwork became more mosaic, but continued to be infused with bright, vivid colors, patterns, and forms. The painting, "In The Birch Woods Calling All Ladies" was painted this year in Minnesota after moving from San Antonio, Texas, to Saint Paul. "In The Birch Woods..." is an example of my mosaic design style of painting. My designs are in the sky, the landscape and the elk and always in vivid, bright colors. Since moving here to Minnesota, I hope to continue developing my art and finding inspiration in the many lakes, forests and wildlife throughout this beautiful state.Â

Integrating Contemporary Art into Your Home – and Life By Jeff Ambroz, Artist

As an abstract artist working with non-traditional themes and materials, I sometimes hear, “I love your work. I just don’t know where I’d put it.” After further conversation, I often learn that the person has a traditional or period home, and doesn’t know how to integrate contemporary art into their current décor. If you’re wondering how you might add a modern art piece to your home, consider: Color: What are the current colors in your house? If your dining room is decorated in traditional burgundy and gold, you might consider a painting or sculpture in similar colors. A contemporary work that might appear jarring in some spaces might look very much at home in a room of similar colors. Often, a modern piece will offer the perfect amount of contrast to a traditionally decorated room, adding vibrant energy and bringing the whole space to life. Theme: Do you love horses? Have a fondness for landscapes? An abstract take on these themes may be a great fit for your space. For example, an abstract painting of a horse will look wonderful alongside trophies, ribbons and photos that follow a horse theme. Framing: The Saint Paul area is home to many talented framers. A period frame on a modern piece may be exactly what you need to integrate contemporary art into your décor. Similarly, a very large mat surrounding contemporary work can help it look at home against a period decorating scheme. Talk to the staff at your local frame shop for ideas. Let their experience guide the discussion, and choose a solution that speaks to your taste and preferences.

Type of work: Remember that art comes in many, many forms. Paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, functional pottery and fiber art can all be amazing additions to your home. Purchasing handcrafted jewelry, clothing and accessories are other ways you can add contemporary art to your life, and support local artists. If you really can’t imagine purchasing another item—no matter how beautiful—take an art class from a local artist, or consider how you might like to support the local dance, literature, music and theater communities. In addition, don’t forget that the art you see from artists at the Saint Paul Crawl is likely only a portion of their inventory. If you like the work of a particular artist, but don’t see a specific piece that works for you, be sure to ask about other pieces he or she has for sale. You may also want to work with a local artist to commission a piece of the perfect size, subject matter and color scheme. Many artists are willing to create customized pieces. Most will ask for half of the cost prior to starting a piece for you, with full payment on delivery. Finally, remember that art is intended to delight, challenge and inspire you. Give yourself permission to purchase a piece that speaks to your heart. Over time, you’ll build a collection that is uniquely yours, and that only you could have made possible.

Lowertown First Fridays has a mission: To give the community a chance to get to know Lowertown artists in a relaxed, casual environment between art crawls, and to give artists a way to show their work for free, without even having to spruce up their studios. LFF started in 2009 and, remarkably, five sturdy volunteers still keep it running: Tara Weatherly, Stephen Workman, Winna Bernard, Rachel Wacker, and Barbara Evan. LFF hours are from 6 to 9 pm on First Friday of every month. The most active LFF artist building is the Northern Warehouse, along with several galleries: AZ Gallery, The Show Gallery Lowertown, Lowertown Underground Artists, and is growing as new Lowertown businesses want to find ways to support the local artist community. Lowertown restaurants are on board, as well! Twelve restaurants—all that have been asked so far!—have contributed a match toward a gift card! To qualify for the monthly award, the artist has only to participate that month and help get the word out via social media. By no means least, our guests love LFF! People come from all over the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota, and even other countries. They tell us their visit was pleasant, stimulating, and rewarding. We invite you to come and investigate for yourself. You will be warmly welcomed! www.lowertownfirstfridays.org Facebook: Lowertown First Fridays Instagram: #lowertownfirstfridays Lowertown First Fridays is a Program of the St Paul Art Collective.

The ArtCar Parade is coming to the Art Crawl! For 23 years the Minnesota ArtCar Parade has been around, taking part in one show during the summer and one during the winter. It is the only ArtCar Parade on ICE in the world! For those who have never seen an ArtCar, it is a vehicle that has had its appearance modified as an act of personal artistic expression. The car is the canvas. Artists are generally self funded and many agree that creating and driving an ArtCar daily is its own reward. On Sunday, April 15th you can watch as the ArtCars make their way around each district of the Saint Paul Art Crawl.

visit www.MSPHomeTour.com in April 2018 for the list of locations The tour will be April 28-29, 2018

Beginning at Flat Earth Brewing, the cars will travel down 4th Street in Lowertown, pass by the ACVR Warehouse and Schmidt Artist Lofts, cruise down University passing several Raymond Station locations, before waving hello to the East Side Freedom Library and ending back at Flat Earth. Use the map at the end of this catalog to find a building and wave as the cars pass by. Tips for an Amazing Crawl Whether you are new to the Crawl or have been attending for over 25 years, we have put together a list that will help you experience your best Art Crawl. The Saint Paul Art Crawl is a special event. It brings together hundreds of local artists with thousands of community members in 29 different locations throughout St. Paul Plan ahead Take a moment to plan your visit. Use the catalog to find artists, use the Art Crawl Guide to find events. With so many locations spanning across the entire city, it would be difficult if not impossible to visit each one. Use the catalog, map, and online directory to find a number of artists you are excited to see. The catalog and online directory will also tell you which buildings these artists are located in and is an excellent starting point to plan the building you go to first and other buildings that are nearby. The map at the end of this catalog will help you find each building. In addition to finding the artists you are excited to see, you may also want to find locations that have exciting events and performances during the weekend. Event listings can be found in our Art Crawl Guide and online at SaintPaulArtCrawl.org. Skip the hassle of parking, use Metro Transit instead The Art Crawl partners with Metro Transit to offer visitors free rides during Art Crawl hours. These passes can be downloaded from the website at SaintPaulArtCrawl.org. All of the participating buildings can be accessed with public transportation, several directly on the Metro Green Line! Visit a new building If you are a frequent Art Crawl visitor, this one is for you. If this is your first time, keep this one saved for your next visit. We are so excited to include new locations and new artists every season. This Fall 2017 season is the largest Fall Art Crawl to date! We encourage you to make it a point to visit one location

88

you haven’t experience before. It just might add a new artist to those you follow on social media or discover a location you choose to return to during another Art Crawl. Talk with the artists about their artwork The Art Crawl is your opportunity to learn about the artists and their artwork. Many love to talk with visitors about their process, inspiration, and how their artwork makes you feel. This season, make it a point to learn something about the artwork made by each of the artists you encounter. Buy a Piece of Artwork This one is the most important. You could skip everything else but this step and still remember this season as your best. There is no way to cherish your Art Crawl experience better than to go home with a work of original art made by a local artist. Not only is this the best way to support artists, it allows you to remember your experience and share it with others each time you look at or talk about your purchase. At the end of the crawl, there may be artists and locations you did not make it to. Luckily, many return during each Art Crawl season and have additional events you can attend throughout the year. This catalog is not just your guide to the Art Crawl, it is you way to connect and reconnect with your favorite artists all year round! Thank you for your support of local art and artists. Have a happy crawl! Follow the Saint Paul Art Crawl! Facebook: Saint Paul Art Crawl Twitter: @SPACrawl Instagram: #saintpaulartcrawl

Michele Hays: Creating All Things Fun, Silly, and “Horrible” Written by Alexzan M. Richmond The Art Crawl features artists of all kinds and who work in countless media and styles. One of my favorite parts of the crawl is meeting the artists and hearing their stories. I was given the opportunity to do just that recently as I scheduled to interview Michele Hays. I was familiar with Michele’s artwork before I met her and, admittedly, was very curious about what to expect and what I would learn. Michele is the artist behind “My Horrible Dolls.” For those who have never seen these, they are refurbished dolls that could be described as “scary” or “creepy.” Michele herself states that people will refer to her as “The Creepy Doll Lady.” Michele is a very positive person who enjoys the fun, silly parts of life. She has only been

creating her “Horrible Dolls” for three years after designing one for a Halloween costume and deciding it was too fun to stop. When I asked about her decision to style her dolls the way she does her response was, simply, for the fun of it! She loves the reactions she receives whether the person loves them or is scared of them. The battery operated dolls are her favorite, taking on new “life” following her design process. Michele and I talked about what “message” she wanted to get out to the world. Quickly she responded, “Anyone can do this!” Still new to the art scene and still questioning whether she is or is not an artist, Michele is strong and sure in her belief that everyone has the ability to create something they love and present it to the world. Like her dolls, not everyone will love or understand what you create, but having fun, being silly, and expressing yourself is more important.

White Bear’s Original Oil & Spice Shop

Michele can be found at the Carleton Artist Lofts. Look for her mannequin, Lucy, who holds Michele’s signs and is always dressed for the occasion. Keep up with Michele and her available dolls at facebook.com/MyHorribleDolls.

D Step 1: Well, Are You An Artist or Not? “It is not the world which calls me into being, but rather I who dictate the terms of my being to the wider world in which I am situated.”

— (Unknown)

Take a moment to reflect on the quote above. For many of us, we let the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives lead us to bumble around, back and forth, up and down, on and on and on and on. It is easy to feel lost. I, myself, have felt lost. Multiple times. In fact, I think I am still lost, but I am finding my way along. For those of you who have a bit of a creative knack for things, that creative endeavor often seems just a “side gig” of some sort—several half-completed paintings resting in the back corner of the closet, a piano being used as an alternative storage table, or the Nikon you purchased last winter that merely contains a couple photos of your cat. You have that one piece of artwork you are proud of, but the rest are just kinda “meh.” Moreover, you just really do not feel that you are good enough to call yourself an artist. But you do like art and you like making art. “Sometimes…I guess,” you say, with a shrug. Now, I am a bit of a pessimist (or maybe a realist if you want to go with the euphemisms, I suppose), so allow me to first get the following cleared up:

You are correct. Your art really is not good enough.

to share the work with. If you want to be an artist, you must first assert yourself as an artist.

However, your art is good enough for you to be an artist. Like in many other fields, there will always be people who are better than you at what you do, and as the cliché goes, you will always have room to do better. So, your abilities as an artist are not the problem. Whether or not you want to be an artist is the problem. There is no place in the art world to say that you “do art on the side” or that “art is really just a side thing for me.” I admit, I have been guilty of saying and thinking these things as well, but that is where I ran into problems defining myself and what I want and set out to do. The art world is too competitive for indecisiveness and inaction. Perhaps it is true that your actual career is something entirely different or you create artwork in your spare time. Yet, it is important to realize that even if you do actually “do art on the side,” you are fully creating art if you put in all of your efforts and produce quality work that means something to you in the name of art and to those you wish

To me, being an artist involves both taking ownership and performance. It is about the way you portray yourself while in the act, the way you perform for yourself and for your audience. The way you assert it for yourself, the way you take or grab ownership of it. For it is your work. But just mere creation is meaningless on its own. It is your work and you must take ownership over it and declare to the world that you created it and only you are capable of creating what you did. It is yours. And it is part of who you are…no…actually, it is who you are. And, that, is when you are an artist.
