Celebrating a $25 Million Win for Saint Paul!
by Matt Kramer
If there was any question as to the value of an organized Chamber of Commerce, it was answered in September when your Chamber, in concert with the city of Saint Paul, secured $25 million in State funding for the new regional ballpark in Lowertown. We led the lobbying efforts with the legislature this past session and have been relentless in our support of this project. The new Lowertown ballpark will bring 400,000 visitors a year into downtown Saint Paul. This changes the city for years to come, creating new economic development opportunities for members and their employees. We supported this not just because it was the right thing to do, and it was, but because game changing events have a lasting impact far beyond the immediate work. By putting the credibility of the Chamber, and our members, on the line we helped champion an investment that will yield benefits not just for the next

A Business with a lot of tricks (and treats) up its sleeve By Jim Berg, President,
SPACC PRIMARY COLOR SCH
Twin Cities Magic & Costume Company
Twin Cities Magic & Costume was established in 1986 by Fred Baisch and Jim Berg. A multi faceted business steeped in the specialty retail market, Twin Cities Magic & Costume has continued to grow and react to the needs of its customers and the changing market and economic conditions. With its original goal of becoming one of the world’s best magic shops met, TCM&C added other products and services to encompass all the needs of the theater; from lighting and special effects equipment, to wigs and makeup, to masks and accessories, to 1000’s of costumes for sale and for rent and now publishes The Greater Magic Video Library, one of the most extensive educational magic instructional DVD libraries in the world.

Magicians Jim Berg and Fred Baisch are now pulling off their biggest stunt yet: turning a long vacant retail space on Robert Street into a magic and costume emporium. Twin Cities Magic & Costume has been a fixture in downtown St. Paul for over a quarter century. Anyone who has visited that 6,500 square-foot location knows that it is filled wall-to-wall with a vast array of costumes, special effects props and magic supplies. Feeling the need for more space and the desire to be in a more vibrant retail district, the partners decided to relocate to the 10,000+ square-foot former Mattress Giant building at 2044 S. Robert Street in West St. Paul. The new store opened on September 29th, the 26 year anniversary of the store.

"Come as you are and leave as anyone you want to be."
In 1986, the partners, both performing magicians, planned to open a magic store. However, heeding the advice of their good friend and mentor, Joe Stevens from Wichita, Kan., who at the time owned one of the largest magic and costume shops in the nation, they changed their business plan to offer costumes and special effects items as well. “He told us, ‘if you want to eat, you might want to add Halloween to the mix’,” laughed Berg, who is now thankful they took his advice. Today, the store has grown to one of the largest shops of its kind in the region. It offers over 4,000 magic and makeup items, 15,000 wigs and

thousands of costumes and accessories, including masks, hats and other novelties. Much of their product line is available for sale or rent. “Come as you are and leave as anyone you want to be,” quips Berg. “There is nothing in the store that anyone needs, but everyone needs Twin Cities Magic & Costume at some point in time.” That time is typically in October when people are busy planning for Halloween parties. Other times are for the holidays and corporate events. Berg said that nearly every famous magician points to their start with receiving a magic set as a Christmas gift.

In addition to their large customer base in the Twin Cities, the store attracts patrons from the immediate 5-state area and sells nationwide through its website. Are you looking for a machine to produce fog, bubbles or snow? They have it. Do you need a costume for your new born baby? They have it? How about a costume for your pet? Yes, they have that, too. On top of it all, Berg credits his long-time, experienced staff with enhancing their customers’ shopping experience. “We have the greatest selection (of products) and an experienced, knowledgeable staff,” said Berg. “Everyone is a veteran (with the store) and knows our product line.” The store is open year-round. Extended store hours in October are 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday-Saturday, and noon-5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call 651-227-7888 or visit
