Board of Trustees 2016-2017

The Board of Trustees governs Saint Mary’s College High School. The San Francisco Province of the Brothers of the Christian Schools formed the Board of Trustees in 1994 and entrusted the Board with the responsibility for ensuring that Saint Mary’s remains vitally and effectively Lasallian. The Board’s sacred trust is the Lasallian Mission of the school. The Board operates on a “macro level;” it establishes broad policies and delegates the task of carrying out its policies to the President, the Chief Executive Officer of Saint Mary’s College High School. President’s Message Dear Friends, On behalf of everybody at Saint Mary’s, I thank all of you listed in the pages that follow for your generous and kind support this past year. Through your goodness God continued to bless Saint Mary’s, her mission, and her students. Your help made a difference and helped make for another good year. Thank you! With your help, Saint Mary’s was again able to maintain a strong tuition-assistance program, with 42% of students receiving over $2 million in tuition assistance. This is important to us. Keeping the doors of Saint Mary’s open for students from working class families and families in poverty is a core value of our Lasallian Mission. Also, student academic achievement continued to rise, due significantly to the ongoing educational innovations on the part of the faculty under the leadership of Principal Pete Imperial. On pages 10 through 13 is an article that appeared in La Salle Today, a publication for Lasallian schools in the U.S. and Canadian Region. The article celebrates the work of our faculty and students and tells how student achievement at Saint Mary’s is on the rise, how the achievement gap is narrowing, and how the educational program at Saint Mary’s embraces Lasallian principles. Such positive recognition is always encouraging. With regard to facilities, the past year saw the gymnasium receive new basketball backboards, new bleachers, and new paint. We thank all of you who directly participated in this effort. Our girls’ volleyball team and fans were inspired and supported by the spruced-up environment and made us proud by winning league and advancing to the NCS quarterfinals. The basketball teams are now preparing to follow suit. The past year also saw the Student Chapel project take big steps forward with the completion of architectural plans, the hiring of the general contractor, and progress with fundraising. This set the stage for the Board of Trustees to authorize construction. Groundbreaking took place on August 16. We were most truly honored to have Bishop Michael Barber and Bishop Emeritus John Cummins perform the ceremony. This is a milestone in Saint Mary’s history. When I began as president in the fall of 1997, talk about the need and desire for a Chapel had already been a topic for some years. The Saint Mary’s community is deeply grateful to all the remarkable donors making this dream come true. The campus will finally have a facility and space devoted to the spiritual needs of the students. Once more, Saint Mary’s thanks all of you for your generous financial support and for all the many ways that you support the students and Saint Mary’s. Your partnership is treasured. God bless you all.

In Saint La Salle,

Brother Edmond

I am very excited about our new Student Chapel – it will truly enhance many of our current school

programs. With Lasallian Days, we can begin each gradelevel retreat in the Chapel with a prayer before leaving campus. What a wonderful way to use that prayer space! We usually use a classroom to prepare the graduates for their Baccalaureate Liturgy. It would be very meaningful for us to meet and gather ourselves in prayer in the Student Chapel before the evening begins.” -- Cathy Molinelli, Vice Principal

for reflection and prayer. As Director for Campus Ministry, I look forward to having a home for the prayer services that send students off to their retreats, space to house our Day of the Dead Altar, and the opportunity for our religious studies classes to gather for prayer or even for liturgical catechesis. Our prayer opportunities will be greatly enhanced with the ability to gather in smaller groups for prayer and reflection.” -- Brother David Caretti, FSC, Director for Campus Ministry

ON AUGUST 16, THE SAINT MARY’S COMMUNITY CAME together to break ground for the much-anticipated Saint Mary’s Student Chapel. Bishop of Oakland Diocese, Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ and Bishop Emeritus John Cummins joined donors to the Chapel project, students, faculty, and staff to celebrate the commencement of construction. “I’m really pleased to be able to bless this project,” Bishop Michael Barber said to the gathered crowd. “And I want to thank you for your generosity…those of you who are benefactors, donors, builders, parents, or alumni—all of you that are here today who care about the students who go to this school. It means you care about their spiritual welfare.” Bishop Cummins also blessed the building site. He and Bishop Barber joined the assembled group for a donor appreciation lunch following the ceremony. Saint Mary’s has made it a priority to support students’ needs through the building and renovation of facilities on campus. In recent years, the school was able to build the Thomas M. Brady Park athletic complex, fully renovate Brennan Hall, and make needed improvements to the gymnasium, thanks to the generosity of Saint Mary’s alumni, parents, and friends. Soon, students will have a place on campus designed to support their spiritual needs and growth. “We are very blessed this morning,” Brother Edmond told the assembled

group. “More than any other building and space on campus, the Chapel will be a sign of the faith that is at the core of Saint Mary’s and of the beliefs and values of our community. It will celebrate Saint Mary, patroness of our school, and the events in her life. “The Chapel promises to be a place of beauty and peace, a place that will inspire prayer, worship, and love of God and neighbor,” he added. “We are all most grateful to all the generous and kind donors who are making this Chapel, this dream, become a reality. We are already looking forward to a wonderful community celebration at its completion next fall.”

Seth Howell ’17 and Roberta Caretti reading the general intercessions.

During the groundbreaking and blessing ceremony a cross was placed on the hillside adjacent to the Brothers’ residence, just to the left as guests enter campus through Albina Avenue. The cross marked the spot where the Chapel’s altar will be placed. The Chapel, with large glass windows opening up to the tree-lined hillside and the quiet flow of Codornices Creek, will provide students a peaceful place of reflection and prayer away from the hustle of campus life. It will also hold daily Mass for the Brothers and the school community and be open during the school day to members of the Saint Mary’s family. “Even without this, I would want to come back to the community that I’ve been a part of, but this is going to be a huge plus,” said senior and member of the Circle SM Club Michael Homertgen ’17. “This will feel like home.”

It was great to have both Bishops at the groundbreaking and to meet someone who is an

important member of the local Church community. I had a chance to talk with both of them, because I served as Crucifer. It was an honor to be able to be a part of something so significant in Saint Mary’s history. The Chapel will be an important building that will be here for a very long time and I’ll always know that I was there at the groundbreaking.” -- Ricardo Gonzalez ’18

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016

When I heard that we were building a chapel, I initially didn’t think much about it because I wasn’t sure if it

would be here when I was a senior. The ceremony, however, made it real to me. It’s a good thing for students to see that they have a true place of refuge, in addition to the help that they have from parents, counselors, and teachers.” -- Nenechi Nnachi ’17

Bishop Barber concludes the ceremony with a prayer and blessing.

Student Chapel – Fall 2017

The biggest thing that I took away from the groundbreaking ceremony was witnessing the wider

community of Saint Mary’s, which includes not only the people we see every day, but also alumni and others who have continuing connections to our community. They have a true connection to us and impact our day-to-day

experience, and I’m grateful for that.” -- Emma Homertgen ’17

Lasallian Teaching and Learning Processes for the 21st Century by Molly O’Connor The following article first appeared in the Spring 2016 issue of La Salle Today.

10

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016

Consistent with its long-standing Lasallian identity, Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, California, has spent the past decade innovating to meet the needs of 21st century students. Mr. Jay Lawson ’81 tutors a student during A-Block.

PRINCIPAL DR. PETER IMPERIAL’S EFFORTS BOTH PRECEDE and respond to the Lasallian theme for the 2015-2016 liturgical year, “A Gospel Adventure,” and one of its responses,“Lasallian Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century.” “Saint Mary’s is a laboratory for how we are going to live together in the 21st century. Our diversity, both economically and ethnically, allows us to experiment with creating new models of community and solidarity,” said longtime teacher and chair of the philosophy department, Craig Sutphin. “We have an amazingly talented and committed faculty that care deeply about translating the Lasallian mission and making it relevant to our multicultural, progressive student body.” Located in the Bay Area, Saint Mary’s has embraced both economic and ethnic diversity in its student body. Nine percent of students come from low-income families, and about 70 percent are minorities. During the 2014-2015 academic year, 41 percent of students received more than $2 million in tuition assistance. Despite their intentional diversity, Imperial says they don’t have programs targeted to low-income students or to any singular demographic. “We’ve

tried to implement academic policies that work for all learners – students in poverty, [students] with learning disabilities, average students, and those for whom school comes more easily.” When implementing new programs like the school-wide adoption of iPads, care is taken to ensure students are not left behind. Saint Mary’s waited to implement its iPad program until the devices reached a more affordable price point and created a fund to help provide iPads for students in need. A recently instituted multi-year Epistemology (“Theory of Knowledge”) curriculum teaches students how to think and, more importantly, how to learn, echoing the Institute’s call in Circular 470 for more participatory processes in education. An emphasis on “backwards design” for teachers similarly asserts the importance of critical thinking, analyzing information, and posing the “bigger questions” for students to consider. In addition to changes to the curriculum and technology, Imperial and his team have altered the school schedule in two significant ways. A trimester schedule includes longer – but fewer – classes in a day. The change allows students and teachers to delve more deeply into subjects and provides a ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016

more manageable course load. A 45-minute block at the end of the day allows students time for study groups, extra help, or extended study.

and academic growth of these particular students are much higher than the national average of students from similar backgrounds.”

Precisely because programs target a variety of students, these innovations make a difference in many ways. “With low-income students, their home life may not be as conducive for doing homework,” explained Imperial, so the lighter class load and built-in block for studying or extra support can help alleviate challenges low-income students may face.

The numbers are important, but what about when it comes to grades? “We’re interested in student achievement. We believe a ’C’ on the first test of the semester shouldn’t supersede your ’A’ on the final exam,” said Imperial. Puck described the new grading method as “rigor with redemption” in which students aren’t penalized, but rather encouraged to improve.

These innovative practices effectively equip 21st century high school students to succeed at Saint Mary’s and beyond. Imperial thoroughly tracks the results of their initiatives, and has seen improvements in SAT and ACT scores, as well as college graduation rates. “We have seen very strong results with all students, but we are very proud of the students who are from families who are economically poor and marginalized,” added Lawrence Puck, director of admissions. “The scores 12

Sutphin came to Saint Mary’s for its dedication to the Lasallian vision of justice education in service of the poor. “This school has never shied away from taking risks and experimenting; it can be exhausting at times, but continuous improvement is in the DNA of this school.” And, in the DNA of the Lasallian mission. In the spirit of The Conduct of the Christian Schools’ emphasis on meet-

ing students’ needs, Saint Mary’s has turned its focus to the achievement gap. “That and college matriculation are priorities for us,” Imperial highlighted, citing statistics that show increasing success across all demographics for alumni college enrollment and completion. The Lasallian emphasis on social justice is also a guidepost for the school community. With retreats, service days, and dedicated “Peace and Justice Weeks,” students become aware of social justice issues and how they can play a part in their resolution. Imperial noted that he keeps his innovative practices grounded and supported by the Lasallian tradition in part by sending teachers to the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies, a formation program offered by Christian Brothers Conference, which he also has attended. The Lasallian core principles of Christian education and learning together have also formed the basis for many of their programs.

Naama Wekslar and Seth Howell are National Merit Scholarship finalists.

History teacher Kate Long came to Saint Mary’s in 1996 because of her own Catholic education, but she prefers to tell you why she stayed. “There is a cultural identity with which I am proud to be associated, and daily I’m confident that there’s a network – local, regional, global – that I’m part of, that I’m associated with. Being a part of Saint Mary’s means that we all belong to each other, and endeavor to deliberately and carefully broaden that circle,” she said, her zeal palpable. Long witnesses her fellow teachers’ passion for social justice and efforts to build intentional community – modeling the same principles they work diligently to impart on their students. Saint Mary’s teachers go a step beyond participating in Lasallian formation, Long said. They try to integrate their new insights and experiences into their interactions with students and fellow faculty. They practice the core principles not only in their classrooms, but also

by inviting each other into service and through a weekly email that puts Saint John Baptist de La Salle’s meditations into modern context. Uniting in an associative dynamism outside the classroom is just one of many ways they follow in the footsteps of De La Salle and support their work in the classroom. Beginning with how Saint Mary’s distributes financial aid to its intentionally inclusive and diverse student body, the entire community – from the students to the principal – lives out the Lasallian mission, continuing the commitment De La Salle and the first Brothers made in the 17th and 18th centuries to a special concern for the poor and matters of social justice. “For me and for us, this is what it’s all about: Lining up our initiatives to enact core Lasallian principles,” Imperial reflected. Thank You, Legacy Donors We are honored to celebrate the strong tradition of legacy giving at Saint Mary’s and list the following individuals who demonstrate their commitment to the longterm future of Saint Mary’s and her students by including the school in their estate plans. Saint Mary’s is deeply grateful to all of our benefactors for their caring endorsement in leaving behind a legacy. We remember them all, living and departed, in our prayers each day.

John McIntosh ’48 is welcomed by Lukas Jimenez-Smith ’16 (left) and Alexis Glover ’16 during his visit to Saint Mary’s.

After a recent visit to campus, John McIntosh ’48 has most generously named Saint Mary’s as beneficiary of proceeds from his IRA account, which will eventually create an endowed scholarship fund. McIntosh explained his motivation for becoming a legacy donor: “After all these years returning to Saint Mary’s was an awaking. What I encountered were a group of dedicated teachers preparing a diversity of students for today’s fast-paced world. Today’s students at Saint Mary’s represent a broad cross section of our population and each student is there because he or she has the opportunity to receive an excellent secondary education. However, along with that education is the cost involved. For many families, the cost of a Saint Mary’s education involves a major financial sacrifice. While the school does offer financial assistance to many deserving families, the need always exceeds the resources. My decision to pledge a contribution toward the education of the students was an easy decision to make after seeing the vitality and dedication of both students and faculty.” He further commented that, “another option would have been to pledge to my college scholarship fund. However, I believe that a student with a good high school foundation will have opportunities not otherwise available.” For additional information about joining the growing number of Legacy Donors, please contact Lawrence Puck at lpuck@stmchs.org, 510/559-6270.

Mark Medeiros, Saint Mary’s Director of Finance, passed away on June 21 after suffering a series of strokes. Mark joined the Saint Mary’s family in December 2010 and was a most devoted, faithful, caring, and loyal member of the school community. He was also a much-beloved Panther Men’s JV Basketball Coach. Mark loved the students, he loved his colleagues, he loved Saint Mary’s, and he loved Saint La Salle. Saint Mary’s was greatly blessed and fortunate to have known this very good man, as a colleague and as a dear friend. Mark leaves behind his wife, Aimee, and his five children, Jimmy, Joey, Michael, Megan, and Reed. Mission & Philosophy Statement As a Christ-centered community striving to live the mission of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Saint Mary’s College High School is a Lasallian Catholic school where diversity and inclusion are essential, and quality education of the whole person is our active ministry. With community support and faith grounded in love, we teach one another to pursue a life of virtue, scholarship, and service. To see all things with the eyes of faith… We remember that we are in the holy presence of God. We find God present in the world, in each other, and especially in students entrusted to our care. This life-affirming faith grounded in the teachings of the Gospels and the educational spirituality of Saint John Baptist de La Salle animates our relationships and all aspects of our work as a community. We build a community that reflects diversity. It is in community that we are most effective, and our understanding and practice of community nurtures a sense of openness and safety. We honor the traditions of many cultures, and we work to eliminate barriers that divide people. We learn from each other. Our calling as educators is a shared ministry with parents as primary educators, with collaboration among teachers and staff, and with the support and participation of alumni. Further, we recognize our shared mission within the broader Lasallian communities of the Bay Area, the nation, and the world. We strive for the welfare and fullness of life for all. Those who are most in need academically, economically, socially, and spiritually require special attention. We therefore endeavor to make Saint Mary’s accessible to students from underprivileged living situations,

especially the poor and the working class. We educate to raise awareness of the conditions facing the poor and marginalized locally and worldwide, and we promote service opportunities for the Saint Mary’s community to actively address recognized needs. We affirm the human dignity of all persons. As all people are made in the image of God and called to love, each person is worthy of unconditional respect. In part, we demonstrate respect by offering educational and relational experiences that challenge and engage each student with the expectation that students learn to care for themselves and for one another. We seek to educate the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. A person lives in relation to others and the whole of creation. Educating the whole person embraces the spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual, and communal dimensions of a student’s life and leads us to strive for more than academic excellence. Our Lasallian Educational Outcomes (LEOs) provide an important reference with respect to each of these life dimensions. The LEOs help us measure the effectiveness of our academic, co-curricular, athletic, student-support, and campus-ministry programs. Throughout our programs each student is expected to inquire, contribute, collaborate, reflect, and actively create a meaningful experience that results in personal growth and ownership of the student’s educational journey. Saint Mary’s offers a quality college-preparatory curriculum designed to surpass university entrance requirements and address additional contemporary needs. The Saint Mary’s faculty engages students to be aware and curious, ask thoughtful questions, learn from failure, access and analyze information, work and communicate with others, and adapt skills to new situations in order to become successful citizens.
