Thank you, Saints! This May I celebrated my 14th and last commencement at Saint Martin’s. The large crowd included families back in the Pavilion for the first time since 2019. This commencement signifies the last major event at Saint Martin’s for me as president as I retire this June and conclude a 43-year career in Catholic higher education. When I was a young man, I would never have envisioned this would be my career path. Truly, it was and remains a calling. I have enjoyed every minute, even the trying times that tests a person’s mettle. In my charge to the 2022 graduates, I shared this advice: keep an open mind, never say never, and let God call you to your vocation. The progress at Saint Martin’s has been great over the past 13 plus years, due to many individuals who have stepped forth to support our mission, including many of you. While much remains to be done, Saint Martin’s is well poised to do so.

Jennifer Bonds-Raacke, Ph.D., recently provost and vice president for academic affairs at St. Norbert College (WI), will become Saint Martin's 11th president and the first woman to serve in this role. Unanimously supported by the Saint Martin’s University Board of Trustees following a nationwide search, Dr. Bonds-Raacke will start on July 1.

I am especially proud of the courage of our trustees to begin a comprehensive campaign, For Every Saint, during the pandemic. With the support of trustees, the Abbey, faculty, staff and alumni, the campaign has already made great strides. This summer begins its public phase. To be successful, we need every Saint, past and present, to step up: let’s bring this campaign to the finish line. Kathleen and I have made a significant gift to the campaign because we believe in the mission and the students served at Saint Martin’s. I hope you will join us too. Thanks again to everyone for this incredible journey. Kathleen and I are excited for the leadership and vision the new incoming president, Dr. Jennifer BondsRaacke, will bring. We will remain close to Saint Martin’s and hope to see you at future events!

Contributions

Contributions consist of all private gifts and grants made to Saint Martin’s University from individuals, foundations and corporations. Gifts are both unrestricted and restricted for purposes such as scholarships, academic programs and capital projects.

Endowment

GIVE. GROW. 2020-21 Financial review The following numbers reflect Saint

Martin’s total contributions for this fiscal year as well as the five most recent

fiscal year results on Endowment and

Institutional Aid. The fiscal year runs July 1 – June 30 of each year.

An endowment is a donation that is made to Saint Martin’s on the condition that it is used to advance the mission of the school for the long term. Most endowments are designed to provide a permanent source of income for the University by keeping the original amount invested and using the accrued income from dividends for its charitable purpose, such as a scholarship. Saint Martin’s endowment has grown due to the generosity of donors through outright gifts, bequests and other planned gifts, as well as investment earnings.

Institutional Aid

Part of a student’s overall financial aid package, institutional aid represents the grants and scholarships which Saint Martin’s itself offers prospective and returning students. It does not include federal or state grants, loans, or outside scholarships or work study.

fter serving 14 years, Roy F. Heynderickx, Ph.D., is retiring from his role as president of Saint Martin’s University. Under his leadership, the institution has expanded its academic offerings, including new undergraduate majors across four colleges, new graduate programs and its first doctoral program; increased enrollment at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and broadened community partnerships and expanded fundraising efforts, including the addition of several new academic buildings, tripling the endowment and securing competitive federal grants. Each of these efforts led to greater support and opportunities for its students.

"I thank all of you who have supported me these many years, and I know the many accomplishments over my tenure are truly ours as many have worked hard to make things possible," said Heynderickx. During his presidency, Saint Martin's also gained recognition for its efforts to support its increasingly diverse student body and surrounding community, including being named a top 40 "Most Transformative College" by Money magazine, the first Purple Heart University in Washington state, and the #2 most diverse private college in Washington state by Niche.com. To honor Heynderickx's tenure, the University Board of Trustees awarded him the status of president emeritus and named part of the Lacey MakerSpace after him: The Heynderickx Hub for Innovation at the Lacey MakerSpace. Wife Kathleen was selected as a recipient of the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the 2022 Saint Martin’s commencement ceremony for her dedication to supporting the students. These honors were announced in conjunction with the public launch of a $100 million comprehensive campaign, of which $82 million has been raised as of May 2022. During the Saint Martin’s Gala in November 2021 and on 3.21GIVE, donors raised $360,000 in honor of the Heynderickxs. They chose to direct these gifts toward supporting the university’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives through the newly established DEI Fund. Gifts made toward the DEI Fund will support affinity group gatherings, cultural events, AHANA Connections, and future scholarships for black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) students. If you would like to make a gift in honor of the Heynderickxes and add to their legacy through a gift to the DEI Fund, please visit www.stmartin.edu/giving. President Heynderickx became the tenth president of Saint Martin’s University on January 1, 2009. He has worked in Catholic higher education for 43 years.

Saint Martin’s Day of Giving engages 200+ donors for student success Alumni, families and friends of the University came together on Monday, March 21, for the 8th annual day of giving, known as 3.21GIVE. From 224 donors, $102,104 was raised for student success programs, scholarships and academic priorities. Approximately 21 percent of those donors gave their first gift to the University during the event. “Thank you to the hundreds of Saints who gave back to support current students,” said Katie Wojke, interim vice president of institutional advancement. “3.21GIVE has grown to be an event many look forward to throughout the year as their opportunity to give back to Saint Martin’s in the ways that mean to the most to them; we are so thankful.” 3.21GIVE is a 24-hour, online day of giving where alumni, families, friends and corporate sponsors support the areas at Saint Martin’s that mean the most to them. The focus of the event is growing participation in giving among our community, not the amount of a gift. This year, two legacy funds were established to honor retiring University leaders: The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Fund was established by President Roy and Kathleen Heynderickx. The DEI Fund was created to promote diversity, equity and inclusion through student scholarships and programming as one of their lasting legacies. The Grisham Legacy Fund was established to honor Bob Grisham, longtime Saint Martin’s Athletic Director. Bob had a profound impact on expanding the athletic programs of Saint Martin’s University and on the experiences of hundreds of student-athletes. This fund will be used to support an athletics project/purpose of Bob’s choosing. Gifts are not limited to 3.21GIVE. If you would still like to make a gift, please visit www.stmartin.edu/giving.

1946 - 2022

M

ary Doris Conley was born June 30, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Toney and Nadine Conley, who both were pastors in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and are now deceased. She has one sister, Faye Conley Fisher, now deceased, and one brother, Timothy Conley, Huntingtown, Maryland. Mary was a peripatetic soul during her first 30 years. She never lived any place for more than four years before moving to her current residence in Lacey, Washington in 1976. Mary earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and drama from Culver Stockton College, Canton, MO in 1968 and a Master of Science in theater from Illinois State Normal University in 1972. In 1974 she married Larry G. Law and the couple had one child, Amy Mae Law, before divorcing in 1984. Amy is a graduate of Saint Martin's University and is now the Lead Instructional Designer in Physician Education at the University of Washington. Mary began her employment with Saint Martin's on October 25, 1975 as a transfer evaluator. Later she accepted an offer from then-Saint Martin's College President Fr. John Scott, O.S.B. to fill the registrar's position, which she did on January 1, 1979. She remained in her registrar position until 2011 when she retired. During her time at Saint Martin’s, Mary engaged deeply with the college community. She taught classes on the main campus and at the JBLM Fort Lewis and McChord extension campuses teaching First-Year Seminar, drama, film and musical theater. She also had the opportunity to direct theater productions and served as advisor to several student organizations. Always available to the campus community, Mary had an ‘open-door and candy’ policy. Students, staff and faculty were often seen stopping in for a warm welcome and chat, and leaving with a piece of red licorice. Mary’s love for the college community was immensely evident as she was an avid supporter of the Saints athletic teams, especially basketball. During her time at Saint Martin’s she almost never missed a home game (missing only 18 home games between 1978 and 2009) and on many occasions traveled to away games to show her loving support. She earned an official spot in the Pavilion for these games and players and fans alike were energized by her cheerful spirit. In 2003, Mary received the Monks of Saint Martin’s Abbey’s Outstanding Staff of the Year Award for the 2002-2003 academic year to recognize her service to the college community. In 2010 she was inducted into Saint Martin’s Athletic Hall of Honor. In 2012, the year following her retirement as Registrar, she delivered the Commencement address at graduation and was granted the title of Registrar Emeritus and received the President’s Medal for “supporting and promoting the values of Saint Martin’s, modeling those values through kindness, compassion and integrity.” Even after retirement, she continued her service for several months as alumni ambassador for the Office of Institutional Advancement. Mary’s service to others continued after retirement as she connected with St. John’s Episcopal Church in Olympia. In 2020, her selfless contributions there earned her the Don Duncan Award for her profound impact to the benefit of all at St. Johns. This is a genuine example of Mary’s warm and caring nature. Even the pandemic did not stop her from serving others as she formed an online prayer group that grew to over 20 participants. Mary will always be remembered for her contagious laugh, her generosity to others, her mentoring to students and staff, and her gift of being ‘mom’ to not only her daughter, Amy, but to so many of those who needed someone to be there for them. She has touched the lives of so many. . . even more than she knew.

We will truly miss her kind and loving spirit.
