Scholarship Programme Overview
Scholarships are awarded to pupils entering Form 7 (11+) and Form 9 (13+) from the current St. Edmund’s Form 6 and Form 8 cohort, as well as to pupils applying externally. St. Edmund’s celebrates and encourages the talents of our pupils and scholarships are offered in Academia, Art, Drama, Music, Performing Arts and Sport. Our Scholars are expected to demonstrate outstanding achievement, enthusiasm and potential in their chosen field, as well as participate fully in the life of the school. Opportunities exist inside and outside the classroom for our highest achievers to explore their strengths to a deeper level, as well as further develop their talents. All our Scholars are expected to be excellent ambassadors for the whole school and their departments, as well as demonstrate ongoing dedication to their area of specialism. Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Governors based on the recommendation of the Headmaster. Some Scholarship Awards are honorary but others come with a small remission on annual tuition fees. All scholars have the same status and responsibilities.

SCHOLARSHIPS
ACADEMIC
St. Edmund’s is looking for pupils who enjoy academic study and are keen to stretch themselves beyond the curriculum. Academic Scholarship candidates should display intellectual curiosity, be diligent in their approach to their studies and go above and beyond where they can.

For external candidates the formal entrance assessments (English and Maths) in Form 6 for 11+ candidates and in Form 8 for 13+ candidates will be used to identify children suitable for the Academic Scholarships in Form 7 and Form 9. For internal candidates, class assessments in the Michaelmas term of Form 6 and Form 8 will be used
to identify pupils suitable for the scholarship awards for academic excellence. Those interested in pursuing an 11+ or 13+ Academic Scholarship are asked to register their interest by the closing date each year, however all candidates sitting their class assessments in Form 6 and Form 8 will be considered. No application forms are required.
ART
SCHOLARSHIPS 04
St. Edmund’s has an excellent Art provision which includes painting, drawing, print-making, pottery and sculpture. We are looking for 11+ and 13+ Art Scholarship candidates with a keen attitude who show a high level of passion, knowledge and talent for Art and who will act as ambassadors for our Art Department. Candidates should demonstrate the power of observation and imagination, as well as possess high technical ability and creativity. Successful Art Scholars will be expected to immerse themselves in the subject and attend Future Artists club (Forms 7 & 8), as well as regularly enter art competitions. There is a high expectation for Art Scholars to choose GCSE Art as an option in Form 9.
Assessment At the time of application, candidates should digitally submit a personal Art portfolio, showing a range of media (any three-dimensional pieces should be presented in photographic form). After consideration, selected applicants will be invited to the Art Scholarship Assessment Day and will be assessed during a timed observational still-life drawing session and an interview with the Head of the Art Department.

Assessment Both 11+ (Form 7) and 13+ (Form 9) candidates should prepare a two-minute monologue (individual speech) taken from a published play, performed without props. Candidates will be assessed on both their vocal and physical skills, so some form of movement within the speech is important. They will also be assessed on their interpretation of the character and the speech. Both 11+ and 13+ Drama Scholarship candidates will participate in a short group workshop focusing on improvisation skills. They will also be expected to critique a recent theatrical production for discussion during their interview with the Head of Drama and Theatre Studies. Candidates should choose either Drama or Performing Arts if they are interested in both performance Scholarships.
DRAMA
Drama Scholarship candidates should have experience of acting on a stage and in public performance and they will be expected to audition for and take a leading role in school and class productions as well as in our public speaking programme. We reward pupils who show promise, potential and passion for drama and it is anticipated that Drama Scholars will pursue their passion for Drama and Theatre Studies to GCSE and beyond. There will be opportunities for Drama Scholars to watch and learn directly from industry professionals by visiting theatres both in London and locally to watch relevant performances.

Drama Scholarships at St. Edmund’s are awarded to pupils who display an outstanding interest and talent for performance. Candidates should be willing to take full advantage of all opportunities to participate in Drama at St. Edmund’s.
SCHOLARSHIPS
MUSIC
Our Music Department is a vibrant department which aims to provide keen musicians with many opportunities to perform, as well as develop their talents.
We are looking for candidates who have a genuine enthusiasm and passion for music. Candidates aspiring to secure a Music Scholarship are encouraged to showcase their musical ability across a diverse range of instruments. We are looking for Music Scholars who show potential and enthusiasm for their chosen instrument or vocal talent. There is also the opportunity for candidates to earn a Choral Scholarship, which comes with the privilege of becoming a member of the school’s esteemed Chapel Choir.

Music Scholars are expected to uphold the school’s high standards of musical excellence. They are seen as ambassadors for music within the school community and performance opportunities include enthusiastic participation in school concerts, involvement in school choirs and assemblies, as well as external community events. Music Scholars will ideally wish to advance their musical interests to GCSE level and beyond.
Assessment Music Scholar candidates should exhibit proficiency in two or more instruments and are required to be at least Grade 3 level (11+) or Grade 5 level (13+). One of these instruments may also include voice. Candidates who demonstrate exceptional talent in just one instrument will also be considered. Candidates will be required to present a compelling musical performance. This entails delivering two contrasting pieces on their primary instrument and one piece on their secondary instrument. Auditions will also encompass aural tests and sight-reading exercises, all conducted on the candidate’s primary instrument. Candidates will also take part in a interview with the Director of Music, designed to gauge their passion for music and their promise as musicians. While an accompanist can be provided, contingent on receiving the sheet music in advance, candidates must ensure they bring their own instruments and sheet music to the audition.

PERFORMING ARTS
Performing Arts Scholarships are awarded to pupils who display an outstanding passion for performance and are willing to take full advantage of all opportunities to participate in Performing Arts at St. Edmund’s.
Performing Arts Scholarship candidates should demonstrate involvement in Performing Arts at their current school or in clubs outside of school. They should be able to demonstrate a passion and talent for performing and show the potential to develop in their chosen fields. They must have a genuine interest and

enthusiasm for their disciplines and show a positive attitude, creative approach, and commitment to performing. There will be opportunities for Performing Arts Scholars to watch and learn directly from industry professionals by visiting theatres both in London and locally to watch relevant performances.
Assessment Candidates applying for a Performing Arts Scholarship are required to demonstrate performance versatility in a range of disciplines, specifically drama, dance and singing. A combination of two of these disciplines are required to be considered for a scholarship. DANCE: Candidates should prepare a one-to-two-minute dance in a style of their choice. DRAMA: Both 11+ (Form 7) and 13+ (Form 9) candidates should prepare a two-minute monologue (individual speech) taken from a published play, performed without props. Candidates will be assessed on both their vocal and physical skills, so some form of movement within the speech is important. They will also be assessed on their interpretation of the character and the speech. SINGING: Candidates will be expected to perform two songs of their choice to the Director of Music. These can be from any style but must demonstrate their ability to ‘perform’ whilst singing. Performing Arts require concentration, discipline, imagination, and passion, as well as talent. Therefore, we look at how candidates create, perform, and respond in the audition, as well as their attitude and approach. Candidates should choose either Drama or Performing Arts if they are interested in both performance Scholarships. However, pupils who apply for a Performing Arts Scholarship may also be considered for a Drama Scholarship.
SPORTS SCHOLARSHIPS

At St. Edmund’s we offer a wide variety of sporting opportunities and we hope our Sports Scholars will bring their talent and ability to our school and in turn we will give them the opportunity to excel. We want all pupils at St. Edmund’s to access sport and enjoy it, regardless of ability and we expect our Sports Scholars to play a central role in ensuring this happens. We are looking for candidates with excellent sporting and leadership ability. Sport Scholars are expected to be positive contributors to sporting life at St. Edmund’s and set an example to the rest of the school through their attitude, behaviour and work ethic towards sport. Our Sports Scholars are ‘all-rounder’ athletes and candidates should give a high level of commitment to sport. They will be required to represent the school in all our core sports on a regular basis – across all three terms throughout the year. Candidates should embody the qualities we hold dear: empathy, confidence, creativity, determination, self-discipline and excellence. St. Edmund’s Sports Scholars are currently represented in regional, county and national teams across a variety of sports. Multiple pupils are involved in professional programmes following their pathways into elite level sport. Sports Scholars become part of our Gifted and Talented programme with access to specialist coaching, as well as 1-1 tuition. Sports Scholars are also required to attend at least one of the Sports Scholar training sessions which are part of the extra curricular programme. The school offers two different types of academic sport subjects for GCSE
options, (GCSE Physical Education and GCSE Sports Science), which we would hope our Sports Scholars look into studying to help develop their knowledge of sport.
Assessment As part of the application, candidates will be asked to choose two sports which they specialise in. Ideally at least one of these should be one of our core sports. All candidates will attend an assessment session during which they will be expected to participate in our core sports; football, hockey and cricket. Boys will also be assessed in rugby and girls in netball. We are aware that not all candidates will have covered these sports but we expect them to still participate to show core skills such as; hand-eye coordination, speed, agility, and the ability to transfer and link their dominant skills to other sports. Candidates will also be assessed on their cardiovascular fitness, motor skills, and their response to coaching.
References We expect that the child’s school or club will provide suitable references and ask candidates to supply external references and testimonials with their application. We are keen to hear about the candidate’s ability, coachability, potential, commitment and self-discipline.
Application Scholarship information will be sent out in the Michaelmas term of Form 6 and Form 8 to those children registered with St. Edmund’s for Form 7 entry (11+) and Form 9 entry (13+) and will include full details on how to apply, as well as the application deadline. The Scholarship Assessments for Art, Drama, Music, Performing Arts and Sport will take place at the beginning of the Lent term of Form 6 and Form 8. Academic Scholarships are offered to pupils of outstanding academic distinction and are based on entry assessments for pupils applying externally or on November class assessments for pupils applying who are already at St. Edmund’s. Candidates are welcome to apply for more than one scholarship although candidates should choose either Drama or Performing Arts if they are interested in both performance Scholarships.
