Headmaster’s Corner

The 2016-2017 school year marks our 60th anniversary. Saint Bernard High School opened in 1956 in the former Williams Memorial Institute on Broad Street in New London as an all-girls’ school. Over the years it became coeducational, moved to Uncasville, admitted students in grades 6 through 12, changed its name to Saint Bernard School and became one of thirteen distinguished Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools in the nation. Through its six decades of evolution, Saint Bernard School has maintained those qualities which its founders promised and held dear. This was to be a school where in a community built upon the teachings of Jesus Christ, students would receive a premier secondary education. That promise has been kept for sixty years of students. Saint Bernard’s has educated countless students, including CEOs, doctors, lawyers, military, business and civic leaders but, more importantly, compassionate individuals who are committed to making the world a better place. Ninety-eight percent of last year’s graduating class went on to colleges or universities. All of our students are required to provide 70 hours of service to the community, with several doing many hours more. We open this 60th year with a completion of phases I and II of an extensive renovation plan. Phase I included new bathrooms, a completely rebuilt and wireless technology infrastructure, new doors and hardware, and security upgrades. Phase II included the renovation of two main corridors, new interior doors, rerigging of our stage curtain, and a state-of-the-art chemistry laboratory. Saint Bernard School remains a strong and positive influence in the academic community of eastern Connecticut. The promises made so many years ago will continue to be kept for the next generation of Saints.

Commencement Ceremony

Fifty-three students were pronounced graduates of Saint Bernard School on May 27, 2016 at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich. “We are now part of an era – Once a Saint, Always a Saint,” said Emily De La Cruz, who was chosen by a faculty panel to give the Orator’s Address. “Our memories are cemented into the foundation of this school and what we hold up are five values: humility, simplicity, trust, compassion and zeal.”

4

Emily spoke briefly about each of those five Xaverian values and said although she and her classmates will be attending schools in many different places (including Washington State, Canada, Florida, Singapore and UCONN) that they will succeed. “What I’m asking from each of you, and from myself, is to remember how we got there,” she said. The Rev. Monsignor Robert L. Brown, Chancellor of the Norwich Diocese, presented the diplomas to each student.

Chamber Student Leader of the Year

Theodore James Ryken Award The 2015 Theodore James Ryken Award was presented to Mr. James Leone, who has taught at SBS for 38 years.

Shenandoah Terry ’17 was recognized as Saint Bernard’s “Student Leader of the Year” at The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut’s Annual Student Leaders Breakfast on June 3, 2016 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Norwich.

“The name Jim Leone is synonymous with Saint Bernard School … You cannot speak to alumni without being asked ‘Is Mr. Leone still there?’ followed by, ‘What a great guy,’ ” said Headmaster Don Macrino who presented the award following a Dec. 3, 2015 prayer service.

This year the Chamber honored one outstanding junior-year student from each of nine Norwich area schools. These students excel in their school and give back to the community, while displaying traits such as honesty, integrity, and leadership. Shenandoah gave a speech about the importance of leadership in the community and included the XBSS values in her speech. She was nominated for the award by Mr. Clement.

The Ryken Award, named for the founder of the Xaverian Brothers, is given annually on the feast of St. Francis Xavier at each of the 13 Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools. The recipient is chosen by a committee made up of the administration and past Ryken Award winners. Mr. Leone began teaching at Saint Bernard in 1978. Through his years at Saint Bernard, he has coached baseball, football and wrestling, and taught religion to generations of students. Mr. Leone has been the faculty representative for pro-life accompanying students to Washington, D.C., annually for the March for Life. He was one of three finalists for the national assistant coach of the year award and has served as a member of the Principals Advisory Board. He has taken students abroad, exposing them to art, history and the culture of faraway places. He has also been a Big Brother for the United Way.

Mystic Knights of Columbus The Mystic Knights of Columbus Father Murphy Council #1943 began holding annual steak dinners and raffles to benefit St. Bernard High School in 2000, when SBHS senior Michael McCullen became a member of the Mystic Knights of Columbus. At that time, Michael urged the Knights to sponsor a scholarship dinner to assist the families of students who wished to have their child attend the Catholic high school but were in need of tuition assistance.

Geography Bee Alex Pralea ’20 finished sixth in the Connecticut State Geography Bee at Central Connecticut State University! Alex has been our school geography champion two years in a row. He advanced to the final round of 10 contestants and was among 100 students across the state to participate in the statewide competition.

MathCon On May 23, 2016, students learned various applications of math and science at our school’s 2nd annual MathCon. The event featured liquid nitrogen ice cream, 3-D printer and infrared camera demonstrations, as well as many presentations by Mu Alpha Theta honor society members on mathematical topics ranging from light pollution to space time.

The fact that it was a student at SBHS who actually was the inspiration for these annual scholarship dinners makes this yearly event all the more meaningful. Over the past 16 years, the Mystic Knights of Columbus has contributed over $22,000 to Saint Bernard School for scholarship assistance. The average annual contribution is about $1,400. Saint Bernard School is deeply grateful to the Mystic Knights of Columbus for continuing this tradition initiated by Michael McCullen ’00!

Grandparents Mass and Luncheon The annual Grandparents Mass and Brunch was attended by about 250 people on April 12, 2016. The event is an annual tradition which aims to connect the generations and celebrate grandparents and the special meaning they hold in our lives. The Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev. Michael R. Cote, Bishop of Norwich. During his homily, Bishop Cote said grandparents “have a wonderful job, and a simple one - to spoil us and to love us.” He said grandparents nurture us and feed us by their good example and “remind us we are good.” Following Mass, a video featuring students speaking about their grandparents was shown. A light brunch was served immediately afterward in the gym.

Community

During the 2015-2016 school year our Saints, once again, showed their generosity by donating money, food and hygiene items, clothing and/or gifts, to a variety of causes in our community. Here are some highlights.

Teammates for Life Dress-Down Before heading off to enjoy Spring Break in April, students at SBS raised $600 by holding a dress-down day to benefit the Teammates for Life organization, which helps to send girls in Uganda to school and basketball camp. Caitlyn Dittman ’17, who organized the fundraiser, said the money raised by our students alone is enough to send two girls to school.

Students Helping Students Students donated a total of $2,717.29 during pocket change collections on Fridays throughout the 2015-2016 school year. Our Saints were able to help provide a nourishing daily meal for 23 children for an entire year at the St. Pierre School in Jeremie, Haiti! This is often the child’s only meal of the day.

#DStrong In January, students and staff showed they were #DStrong for an 8-year-old Westerly boy with terminal cancer, and raised $720 for his family. The Class of 2017 encouraged everyone to wear blue, the favorite color of Dorian Murray who had battled rhabdomyosarcoma (a rare muscle cancer) since he was 4 years old. #DStrong, the hashtag created by Dorian’s family on social media to help fulfill his dying wish of becoming famous in China, garnered attention from people all over the world. Even celebrities took part in spreading his message of love and hope. Dorian passed away on March 8.

Siblings Demetrios ’17 and Rachel ’19 Yackovetsky arranged a hygiene drive during the first two weeks of March to benefit St. Vincent de Paul Place in Norwich. At least 1,000 items – ranging from toilet paper, deodorant and shaving cream, to diapers were collected and filled the family’s SUV!

Lenten Food Drive

Sock Drive

The Lenten Food Drive in March, sponsored by Student Council to assist St. Vincent de Paul Place Norwich, was a huge success. Students and staff donated 375 pounds of food to the organization!

During Catholic Schools Week in January, our Saints collected 555 pairs of socks for United Way of Southeastern CT! The organization delivered the socks to Thames River Community Service, Norwich, and Covenant Shelter, New London.

Giving Tree Three local families had gifts under the Christmas tree in 2015 thanks to middle school students and staff at SBS. A Giving Tree in the school contained 48 tags of items for eight children, who ranged in age from 7 months to 14 years. Donations enabled each child to receive six gifts, ranging from clothes and toys to gift cards! The gifts were distributed by Ledyard Social Services.

Ovarian Cancer Research Dress-Down 22

Student Council sponsored a green dress-down day on March 17 in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. A portion of the $600 raised was donated to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund!

Wreaths Across America On Dec. 8, 2015, Saint Bernard School was the first stop in Connecticut for Wreaths Across America’s annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine, to Arlington National Cemetery. SBS welcomed more than 150 volunteers from the organization, along with a convoy that included 11 semi-trailer trucks full of wreaths that would ultimately be displayed on veterans’ graves. A group of students solemnly carried out and unfolded a 30- x 45-foot flag toward the trucks, where alumnus Kevin Reilly ’87, the pastor at St. Patrick’s Church in Mystic, blessed the fleet, wreaths and drivers making the journey to Arlington. Samuel Britner ’17, a junior at SB, played “Taps” on his trumpet. Attendees were led indoors by Saint Bernard parent William Irwin, who played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes. The honor guard from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy presented the colors during the ceremony, which included performances of the national anthem and “America the Beautiful” by the Saint Bernard choir, and the themes of the Armed Forces by the school band. Madison Rising, a patriotic rock band in town for a show at Mohegan Sun, also performed. Speakers included Saint Bernard alumnus U.S. Army Col. John Whitford, class of 1980, and U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Anthony “Jack” Vogt. Saint Bernard Headmaster Don Macrino said, “Our students, and the entire Saint Bernard’s family, pause today to remember all our veterans.” Wreaths Across America is a non-profit organization formed in 2007 as an extension of The Arlington Wreath Project, with over 700 participating locations in all 50 states, and 24 national veteran cemeteries on foreign soil. The convoy, consisting of 150,000 wreaths, makes visits to schools, veterans’ homes, monuments, and communities along the east coast on their way to Arlington. The wreaths’ journey has become a tradition in itself, allowing locals along the route to share in the emotional and educational experience as the convoy passes through their hometown.

Piano Tuning In May, SBS student musicians from concert choir, music theory, and music history were given a lesson on the physics of sound by piano tuner extraordinaire Rich Ricard, of Perfect Pitch Piano Servicing.

Amid authentically restored aircraft, the choir and band performed on the Intrepid, a National Historical Landmark. Launched in 1943, the carrier fought in World War II and later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. It also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s. The vessel was decommissioned in 1974 and today is berthed on the Hudson River as the centerpiece of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

The groups then traveled to the historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The SBS choir sang for visitors to the decorated Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral church, which is a prominent landmark of New York City.

Vicky based her blue and white pattern on Chinese porcelain and related it to nature with the trees, flowers and butterfly which adorn her sub, while Sophie’s design is reminiscent of “dazzle camouflage” which was used extensively in World War I and used complex patterns of geometric shapes to confuse the enemy. All of the submarines were showcased in Groton’s July 4th parade. Sophie’s sub is now on display in front of Chelsea Groton Bank’s Groton branch; Vicky’s is showcased along Route 32 at the intersection of Route 601 in Uncasville. 30
