Sweetland Faculty emeritus $40 million Capital Campaign Announcement
CELEBRATING DENNIS AND JAN SWEETLAND: A FAMILY LEGACY AND A MEANINGFUL GIFT FOR THE JEAN SCHOOL CAMPAIGN
Dennis and Jan Sweetland’s connection to Saint Anselm College runs deep, shaped by decades of dedication and family ties. Dennis, a beloved and well-known faculty member, retired from teaching theology at Saint Anselm in 2015 after 38 years of inspiring students with his thoughtful approach to faith, debate, and conversation. Their legacy extends beyond his teaching career, as two generations of their family have walked the college’s halls—daughters Susan ’91 and Karen ’92, and grandchildren Kathryn ’19 and Gabriel ’17, each leaving their own mark on the community. Susan ’91 had been the longtime director of Campus Ministry and now serves the college as Vice President of Student Development and Mission.
“We’ve always believed in supporting the institutions that shape lives.”
Dennis
When the opportunity arose to support The Campaign for Jean School for Nursing and Health Sciences at Grappone Hall, Dennis and Jan (a former nurse) knew they wanted to make a meaningful contribution to an institution that has meant so much to their family. Drawing inspiration from a prior giving experience with Dennis’s high school alma mater, they decided to combine their resources to make a significant multi-year commitment that reflects one of the largest gifts they have made together.
Naming a faculty office in Grappone Hall felt like a perfect fit, honoring Dennis’s tenure at the college and his commitment to fostering education and dialogue. “We’ve always believed in supporting the institutions that shape lives,” Dennis shared over coffee at the Coffee Shop, reflecting on their decision.
For Dennis and Jan, this gift is not just a tribute to their family’s connection to Saint Anselm, but also a chance to inspire others to invest in its future. “It’s not just about the donation; it’s about the legacy and the lives it will touch,” Jan explained. Saint Anselm is honored to celebrate their story and their incredible support for the Jean School campaign that will resonate for generations.
