Notes from your Divan

Potentate’s Message Greetings Nobles, I hope rumors have been put to rest. Great things have taken place. Not without hiccups. The new bar and kitchen staff are working hard to correct all the issues that have occurred. Remember this is all new for all of us. Please be PATIENT and allow us to work through all of these. We have had a lot of positive feedback on the renovation. If you haven’t stopped in to see all the changes, please do so. You will be surprised at the new ambience. Let me one more time assure (!) you that the bar and restaurant have gone public, but a fraternity we will always be. For any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact one of your Divan. The month of February was a very special month for Sahib Shriners. This is the month that we go out in the community to solicit moneys for our Hospital Transportation Fund. This is the fund that Sahib uses to bring children from within our entire area to our own Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. We have three vans and many volunteer drivers who work tirelessly to make sure that these children and their parents get to the Tampa Hospital safely. Our drivers are very dedicated Shriners who give of their time to accompany the children to Tampa, wait for them, and return them safely to their homes. Our highlight of this month will be a visit by Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske and his Lady Anne on March 8th. While all the nobles are enjoying the men’s luncheon, a very special ladies’ luncheon is being planned for Imperial Lady Anne and will be open to all the ladies of Sahib. Tickets will be available at the Box Office. The calendar for March is full with events as well. We have a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on the 16th, Sock Hop on the 24th, as well as the Sarasota County Fair the 16th through the 24th, Derby Day on the 14th, and baseball begins. Don’t forget to sign up for our golf tournament on April 7th. Many of our clubs and units work hard at various benefits and contribute heavily to the monetary success of our Shrine. The least we can do is support them by our attendance and ticket purchases. To all those nobles and ladies who find enjoyment offered by our units and clubs, thank you. There is something for everyone to enjoy this month, and I and my Lady Juanita will be looking forward to seeing you at all the functions. Many of our nobles and their ladies will be volunteering for these events, and will welcome a slower pace in the months that follow. Until next month, remember to be kind to one another. Yours faithfully,

Delbert Rawlinson Sahib Shriners Potentate 2018

Chaplain’s Notes Lou Ortt, PM, Chaplain, lhortt@verizon.net Julian of Norwich wrote in the Fourteenth Century, “The worst has already happened and been repaired…All shall be well, all shall be well; and all manner of things shall be well.” The Chinese write the word “crisis” with two characters. One means danger and the other means opportunity. Together they spell crisis. We have weathered the crisis and now it is time to look forward. In Isaiah 32:8 we read, “But he who is noble devises noble things, by noble things he stands.” It is now time to set our goals for the future. Let us remember the goals of the men who think “things are always changing and growing.” These will give us the direction and focus for the future of our Shrine and Fraternity. These goals will lead us down the path of action required for growth and stability. As we achieve a goal, let us be ready to establish a new or higher one. As we travel along this road may we follow the approach presented to us in the book of Proverbs 4:25-27, “Let your eyes

look directly forward, and your gaze straight before you. Take heed to the path of your feet, then all your way will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.” Let each of us set our goal on enhancing our Shrine with whatever our capabilities will allow, always remembering that the ultimate goal is to support our hospital system and improve the lives of all who are treated there. As Spring comes and nature provides new or resurgent life to the world around us, let us who are Shriners spring forth with new vigor and vitality, applying our time and talents to provide a resurgence of life into our Shrine.

Notes from the Cabiri PP Carroll G. Scribner, President, sahibscrib@gmail.com Greetings! I come to you again with great and wondrous news of the Cabiri of Sahib Temple. I know you were spellbound by our first installment in February, and are waiting with bated breath for this month’s issue! Sahib’s Cabiri consists of 38 Past Potentates from all parts of Shrinedom gathered together to continue to serve the Greatest Philanthropy on Earth, make new friends, have fun and continue to play an important role in our temple as dedicated Shriners. We also cherish our widows group and include them whenever possible. They are certainly Shriners in the true sense of the word, having served with their husbands throughout their Shrine careers. Our Sahib Cabiri is unique in that our membership is so diverse! By virtue of our location we offer a home to all Potentates as they move into our area. We are from the temples of Elf Khurafeh, Rajah, Melha, Sahib, Tangier, Kerak, Kosair, Cairo, Araba, Cyprus, Mt. Sinai, Moslem, Bektash, Anah, Zem-Zem, Kora, Aleppo, Sesotris, Egypt, Ismailia, and Mazol. I hope I didn’t miss anyone. What is our role in Sahib Temple? I believe it to be as advisors to the Divan when asked, work with the Divan to accomplish the goals of the year, participate in activities as they arise, and support areas of the temple program. Members of our Cabiri serve on Imperial committees and hospital committees and add support when asked to the Imperial program. We are usually represented on various activities at the Imperial annual meeting. In the past we raffled off items, participated in the FEZtival of Trees (ours was always the most attractive!), served at the Spring and Fall picnics, and at other activities that required a helping hand. These activities and others allow us to raise dollars to pay our bills and contribute to the temple.

This year we have revived an old tradition of day trips to places of interest in our area. The choice this month was Snook Haven in Venice. An old-fashioned fish camp, beer and a meal, a banjo band concert, a narrated cruise on the Myakka River and good company at all times. We met several of our old Sahib Banjo Band who continue to entertain for the love of the banjo! I tried to get them back to parading with us on a trailer, but they declined. Our loss! There is so much going on in our temple right now that it’s hard to keep up with it all; so I am leaving you for now as we get ready for the HIGHLIGHT of our year, the visit of the Imperial Sir on Thursday, March 8th! At left: In front are Tony Koss, PP, and Lady Holly of Melha Temple. Waving from the back, sitting behind an unidentified Shrine Lady, is our own Past Potentate “Scrib,” enjoying the Myakka River cruise. North Port Shrine Club Don Valerino, Past Master and Dual Shrine Temple member, djtodie@comcast.net Nobles, I was informed that the report for last month was successfully transcribed. I am still getting my feet wet. Thanks to all of the Nobles and wives who participated in Hospital Days on Super Bowl weekend. Contributors thanked us many times over for our hard work. The collection was a success and over $1,600 was realized. The poster was beautiful and welldone. We thank all of you who worked hard on these endeavors. The past mixer at the Olive Garden was great and another is to be held in the up-coming days. Lately, we have had good attendance at the morning breakfasts. In January we had a visitor from England. Brother Vic Ride represented Dane John Lodge 8810. The lodge is over 300 years old. In February, we had two visitors: Noble David Pankiw represented Zembo Shrine of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Noble Wayne Roach who represented Boumi Temple of Baltimore, Maryland. Both were encouraged to join the Northport Shrine Club. Up-coming Shrine Club events include a cookout at Dallas White Park and a boat trip to Cabbage Key. The boat trip to Cabbage Key is on April 19th.

Our President is asking for help with the distribution and preparation of magazines. This endeavor was started by John Brophy. If my wife agrees and health permits, I may volunteer. A continuing problem for the Shrine is new members. “Thanks to all of the Nobles and wives who participated in Hospital Days…over $1,600 was realized.”

In this regard, we are experiencing the construction of many new communities around us and some of the new neighbors might belong to Shrine clubs elsewhere. We should devise a strategy to reach out to them. In the past, many of our nobles have kindly dropped off hometown newsletters from temples elsewhere. They are chock-full of ideas on membership, funding, brotherhood, etc. In closing, Brother Ben Franklin, an inventive and very industrious mason, wrote; “Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” Also, Brother Franklin said, “Well done is better than well said.”

March 2018

Motor Corps Shrine Club Giles Light (G-man), Secretary, gileslight@aol.com It is March. We return to Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, March 11th. And spring is only three weeks away—March 20th. For Motor Corps members this means more time to ride in warmer temperatures and more sunlight. Perfect! If you had a motorcycle, you could join us. We hope you were as disappointed as we were regarding the cancellation of our Spaghetti Dinner in February. That event usually draws a bigger crowd than our November dinner and we know that some of us like to use that dinner as sort of a second Valentine’s Day special meal. Since the New Year began, the Motor Corps has kept a busy schedule. The next few months are going to keep us busy as well. Six of our members were in Cocoa Beach the first weekend of February for the Florida Association of Shrine Motor Corps (FASMC) Mid-winter Gathering. Representatives from Shrine Motor Corps Units in Florida attended the event. As usual, everyone had a great time. Several of our members participated in this year's “Thunder by the Bay” motorcycle rally in Sarasota the weekend of February 1518th. This year’s event was the 20th anniversary, and was held at the Sarasota County Fairgrounds. It was designed to honor our veterans, active duty military, and first responders. Finally, several of our members have been practicing on the third Saturday of every month for FASMC competitions. There are two main types of competitions: parade maneuvers and the obstacle course. Everything has to be nearly perfect as our fellow Shriners in Tampa and Ft. Myers have been doing this for years. That pretty much brings you up-to-date on recent Motor Corps happenings, but we have a number of events on the horizon. The first of these will occur on Thursday, March 8th when the Motor Corps will be escorting Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske and his wife,

Imperial First Lady, Anne, to Sahib Shrine for the Thursday men’s and ladies’ luncheons. We anticipate a nice turnout of bikes for that event. Tom Mix would have enjoyed the Arcadia Rodeo Parade. Did you know he was a Freemason?

The annual Arcadia Rodeo Parade is scheduled for Saturday, March 10th. The Motor Corps expects to participate. Kickstands up at Sahib Shrine at 9:00 a.m., and the parade is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. This is a fun parade, even though the ride over and back is longer than the parade itself. The 10th annual Sam Swope Memorial Charity Ride (“We Ride So Kids Can Walk”) is scheduled for the second weekend in March. This year's ride will begin at Bahia Shriners in Apopka and end in Sanford. Several of our members will be headed over to Orlando to participate in the weekend events. Sam Swope had been a great supporter of Masonic organizations and charities, including Shriners Hospitals. Last year more than 500 motorcyclists took to the road for a scenic 50-mile route from Bahia Shrine Temple to the Seminole HarleyDavidson Dealership in Sanford. We have seven Motor Corps members and their ladies with birthdays in March. They are: Bob Hammer (Hammertime) on the 1st, Lady Amanda Cyphers on the 2nd, Les Ruggiero (Curl) on the 3rd, Lady Kelly Pace on the 15th, Jim McKiney (Slim Jim) on the 25th, Barry Hart (Policyman) on the 28th, and Lady Jean Ragsdale on the 29th. No anniversaries in March.

Paul Kline, President, pauliek23@gmail.com Continuing to build on the success of the new year, 38 ladies and gentlemen were in attendance for our February meeting. We are looking forward to seeing that number increase monthly as we are optimistic that our strategies for finding new members and attracting the return of former members will occur. During the business meeting which preceded the luncheon, four major issues were discussed: 1. Russ Sexton, who has succeeded Jim Smith in recruiting volunteers to work during the Pittsburgh Pirates spring training games, provided an update on his recruiting efforts. He reminded that the underwriting for this fundraising project is that of the Sahib Shrine and not the Manatee Shrine Club (MSC)— although MSC will provide volunteers for three of the spring training games. Following the program presentation at the February 2, meeting are: (left to right) Paul Kline, president; Doctor Gerald Grubbs; Jan Sexton, Ladies Club President; and Russ Sexton, MSC board of directors.

2. The goal of restoring membership to levels of the past is a work in progress, with progress being made each month. We have taken the position of being innovative when necessary in implementing strategies and activities considered “outside the box,” in order to meet with success. 3. Our board of directors is very fortunate to have, as MSC’s new secretary, Bob Ransford. Bob will complete the term of the departed Bill Padelford. Bob brings

tremendous knowledge, experience, and energy to this position and strengthens our board of directors. 4. Our treasurer, Tom McGill, encouraged all members to renew their membership. The annual fee is $15.00. Following lunch, our program consisted of a presentation by Gerald Grubbs, M.D., a renowned Sun Coast interventional radiologist. Doctor Grubbs provided us with exceptional insight on the future of medicine as it relates to stem cell therapy and the aging process. Looking ahead to our March 2nd meeting, the menu will again offer two entrees: Chicken Francaise and a Twin Salad Plate with chicken and tuna salad. The dessert will be fruited bread pudding. Guest speaker will be Ron Myer from the Lakewood Ranch Rotary. Very few are aware that the Lakewood Ranch Rotary is one of the top organizations in the world involved with the activities to construct freshwater wells. Mr. Myer will provide a visual presentation showing some of the successes of the Lakewood Ranch Rotary’s work in the Philippines and Peru. We welcome all Shriners to our monthly luncheon meetings. Whether you’re a present member, a former member, or a prospective new member, we hope you will give us a try. We promise you won’t be disappointed!

Past Masters Notes Gary Wonning, cmdr07@gmail.com The Aborigines describe a walkabout as a journey where male Aborigines would undergo a rite of passage during which time they would spend six months in the outback surviving on the skills they had been taught. Later in life, they would go on walkabout to clear their mind when they were confused about things, then they would talk it over with mates or themselves. In a broader term, a walkabout also alludes to a lifelong journey in which we (or they) learn many lessons about nature and our creation. In reality, we are all on walkabout from the time we are born until we pass into another existence. Our learning never ends. In masonry, as in life, the journey never ends.

If you are a Past Master, please join us. We have a table at the Thursday luncheon, located in the northeast corner of the main hall. Come early and enjoy good camaraderie and a drink. Lunch starts at 12:00 p.m., camaraderie begins at 11:00 a.m. “…a walkabout also alludes to a lifelong journey in which we…learn many lessons about nature and our creation.”

The Past Masters meet every fourth Monday, except December, at the Sahib Shrine at 7:00 p.m. If you are a Past Master of any Masonic lodge, from any state, or country, come early, enjoy some chili and good camaraderie. Join us in making this a better world to live in.

While serving as Membership Chairman of Bahia Shriners, Bergenske created and developed the Mentor Program to get new members involved. Shriners now use this program throughout the world. In 1985, Bergenske purchased J & J Metro Moving and Storage, which he has owned and operated for the past 30 years. In addition, Bergenske is a motivational speaker and has written three books. His books discuss ways to “Build a Better Life” and “Become a Better Leader” and are available in more than 10 countries, where they are making a positive difference in people’s lives. In his down time, he loves traveling, the outdoors, hunting, old cars and Harley-Davidsons. Bergenske and his wife, Anne, have six children – Carrie, Lisa, Jason, Jami, David and Jared – and are often referred to as the “Bergy Bunch.” They have 11 grandchildren who regularly brighten their days.

Oriental Band Robert E. Stihler, resnwk@aol.com As a brief bio, I've been a Mason since 1955; a Noble since 1961; simultaneous memberships with Egypt, (1984-Present); Bahia, (2004-2016); and Sarasota, (2010Present). I've held various positions with each of their Oriental Bands. Unfortunately, Egypt Oriental Band folded its tent in March, 2017 due to lack of new members, members’ health problems, and visits by the Black Camel. I became a more active member of the Sarasota Band since February, 2017, when my Lady Nancy and I moved to Bradenton. I'm currently First Vice President of the band, and Secretary since the passing of Noble Jimmy Austin, whose pointed gold shoes will be difficult to fill, as he had been Secretary for many years. I'd like to thank Noble Paul (Greek) Pante, for the touching article he prepared for

March 2018 the February issue of The Reporter honoring Nobles Jim King and Jimmy Austin. The other officers of the band are President and Band Director Floyd LaDue and Treasurer Tom McGill. The band is looking forward to the scheduled 2018 parades, and to the remodeling of our Shrine Center and camaraderie with the Fireman's Benevolent Society. The band is in the process of organizing a Mandarin Degree Team, which will provide opportunities to neophytes to “meet the Mandarin” and gain “further light in Masonry by incorporating ancient oriental philosophies.” It's a fun degree open to any Noble of the Mystic Shrine. Yours in the Faith, Robert “Bob” Stihler

Masonic Digest / Scottish Rite Casey A. Fletcher, 32° KCCH, dow@srtampa.org Studying and examining Masonic ritual leads to many reading sources of philosophy and wisdom. Our ancient brethren were obviously well-read. Over the course of these missives, we have unearthed the writings of many philosophers and teachers. Sometimes your writer, however, simply stumbles across potential sources of Masonic thinking. Such was the case recently when the “Ethics of the Sages, Pirke Avot” was gifted from family friends.

Illustration: a medieval manuscript of Maimonides’ commentary on the Mishnaic tractate Pirke Avot. Library of Congress.

The Pirke Avot is a portion of the Jewish Mishnah, a collection of writings, teaching and redactions of rabbinic teachings during the period 200-500 CE. Mishnah, from the Hebrew work shanah, means to repeat, as in to repeat what one has learned from one’s teacher. This definition itself reminds us of a word we heard early in our Masonic journey: inculcate, to learn by repetition. No assertion is made that our ancient brethren read the Pirke Avot, but wisdom knows no borders of geography, language, religion or culture. The book is a splendid collection of aphorisms and wisdom, not unlike the Book of Proverbs. From whatever original source, Masonic ritual shares lessons found in the Pirke Avot. Here is a sampling: “Do not serve in order to earn reward, serve only to serve.” (Fourth Degree.) “Reflect on three things…where you come from, where you are going and to Whom you are to give account.” (First section of all three Symbolic degrees.)

“Self-control is superior to controlling armies.” (EA degree, “what came you here to do?” and any number of Scottish Rite degrees.) “Do not seek greatness nor crave honor, let your service” speak. (28th degree.) In the midst of busy activities, our communications, meetings, degrees and practices, allocating regular time to reading – reading to capture some wisdom – is worthwhile. As Albert Pike advocated, “books should be our best friends.” The “Ethics of the Sages, Pirke Avot,” an easy read, is commended to our attention and study. The next Scottish Rite Reunion is May 5 and 6, 2018. Degrees will also be conferred on May 14th, July 9th and August 13th. Petitions for membership can be found at http://tampascottishrite.org. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. At our March 12th meeting, the 6th degree, Confidential Secretary will be conferred at 6:10 p.m.; Worshipful Andrew Gluchov 32° will present an educational program during the meeting. Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He spent a lot of time last month listening to Professor Johnson’s lecture “The Big Questions of Philosophy” and, with all due respect, didn’t detect anything more to share than was contained in last month’s article. Bummer.

Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNA Carol Hart, High Priestess, hrhrt@verizon.net On March 31st my year will officially be over. As many before have said, “It is sad, but bitter sweet.” I have enjoyed the work, fun events and welcomed 15 new ladies to Sar-I Court and am very pleased with all we have done this year. Now, it is time to step aside for Lady Kay Neary and her officers to continue our work for the children at the Shrine Hospitals. I know they will do a great job. Our Fashion Show was held at the Courtyard Marriott in Bradenton with A’Tu showing their Spring fashions. Lady Patti Koopman and her page, Lady Pat Dennis, did

a wonderful job. If you missed it, you can look forward to another one next year. As Sar-I Court continues to grow, we encourage the Sahib Shriners to invite their wives to become a part of this wonderful ladies’ organization. It is hard to find the words to close this article but just keep on remembering that what our Ladies do is, and always will be, for the good of the many children at each Shrine Hospital. Our ladies out did themselves on their ritual at the ceremonial. Our fraternal family is growing. Elections brought some new faces into our core of officers. Stay tuned in the months ahead as you meet and get to know these great ladies. We had a great trip to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. John gave our new ladies a wonderful and informative tour. Even I learned some more information about the operation of this hospital. We all enjoyed a great lunch and chat. Time went

by too fast and before we knew it, it was time to head home. We plan some more exciting adventures in the months to come. Get Your Piggy Bank! Have you secured your piggy bank yet? Lady Juanita is counting on YOU to make necessary updates to the Sahib temple. This year, Lady Juanita Rawlinson has chosen to raise funds to refresh and refurbish the temple foyer and the ladies’ restroom. Lady Juanita lists her project as: • New furniture for the temple entryway • Fresh wallpaper for the ladies’ restroom • New seating for the ladies’ restroom • A new automatic soap dispenser for the ladies’ restroom • A locked mailbox Citing the great success of Lady Gail Balkwill’s “Piggy Bank” method of fundraising, Lady Juanita plans to continue collecting money using the piggy banks. In fact, there are several piggy banks that have not yet been brought in from the 2017 effort, so please be sure to bring those banks in to add to the funds to achieve Lady Juanita’s 2018 project goals. If you still have a pig in your possession, and plan to participate in this year’s fundraiser, just keep filling

March 2018

it up and turn it in later. Otherwise, please return the money you’ve collected as well as the bank. To obtain a piggy bank, ask any Divan Lady to rent you one for just $4.00 (that money also goes toward funding the project). At the end of the campaign, please return the piggy bank for future use. By participating, you’ll be helping the Shrine, and you’ll be entered into a contest to win a new T.V.! Here’s how it works: 1. Rent a bank for $4.00 from any Divan Lady. 2. Fill that piggy up with loose change (and bills!). 3. When the bank becomes full, place the money in an envelope or baggie, marked well with your name and “Lady’s Project.” 4. Turn the money in to Lady Juanita or leave it at the front desk at the Shrine. 5. Keep filling that piggy up! 6. Repeat this process until the cutoff date of November 30, 2018. 7. The person who collects the most money over the year will be announced as the winner at the Club/Unit Christmas Party in December, 2018.

Anything Is Possible Excerpts from www.ShrinersInternational.org Eddie Warren refused to let a difficult situation keep him from following his passion. Eddie was born with two deformed legs that would prevent him from ever being able to walk. His greatgrandmother suggested that Eddie and his mother, Wanda, visit Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Springfield because of the hospital’s expertise in prosthetics. Eddie and his mother met with David M. Drvaric, M.D., chief of staff at the hospital, and were taken away by the personal care and attention they received. “The environment at Shriners Hospital was truly incredible,” said Eddie’s mother. “When you walk into the building, you get the feeling that everybody genuinely loves what they do.” When Eddie was 11 months old he had surgery to amputate both of his legs so he could be fitted for the prosthetics. Eddie always had a strong passion for sports, but was hesitant to participate in them. His mother inspired him to believe anything was achievable in life, which led Eddie to start playing football at the age of ten. It proved to be good advice. By his junior year at Sacopee Valley High School in Maine, Eddie played defensive end and kicker for the football team, shooting guard on the basketball team, and was a first baseman and pitcher for the baseball team. All of Eddie’s teammates looked up to him because of the

hard work and resilience he displayed every day in practice. In July of 2010, Eddie’s proudest moment occurred when he was selected to the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic to play the kicker position. With five minutes left in the game, Eddie’s team scored a touchdown and he was brought in to kick an extra point to tie the score. “The situation was so intense, I was practically brought to tears,” said Eddie. “I couldn’t even look after I kicked it.” The football went through the uprights and the whole stadium erupted. “The game wasn’t about winning or losing,” said Eddie. “It was about the kids and helping the organization that means everything to me.” Eddie, 19, currently plays on a semi-pro New England football team.
