Creating Changes Art Therapy By Jun Lee

“Are we to paint what's on the face, what's inside the face, or what's behind it?” ~ Pablo Picasso

This question raised by Picasso brought back memories of the art therapy sessions I once had with Ahmad (pseudonym). Ahmad was a patient referred for art therapy some years ago. The images of his artworks greatly impacted upon me and strengthened my belief in the art product as a reflection of self. On the surface, Ahmad was a typical youth with dreams and aspirations of becoming a chef someday. When I first met him, he greeted me with a broad grin. At that time, little was known about him, except for his multiple medical conditions and that he was a familiar sight with the hospital staff. Ahmad used to attend a special needs school, but had to discontinue his education when his health deteriorated. His life was fraught with crises after crises. At a young age, his mother passed away. His father took to drinking and he was separated from his siblings. Probably aggravated by the stresses in his life, his kidneys failed and he was put on dialysis. Not long after, he developed further health problems including diabetes and high blood pressure. I recalled at our first session Ahmad’s hesitation when I suggested making art with some basic drawing tools, drawing papers, magazines, glue, colour pencils, crayons, markers, etc. During that temporary pause, he had asked, “Draw what?” I suggested he might tear some paper to make a collage. However, he surprised me by creating artwork on his own without requiring any further assistance from me. Upon finishing his artwork, he shared that he was very satisfied and pleased with his creation, which he identified as the moon and the sun. In spite of his cheerful demeanor, I felt disturbed by the hollow eyes seen on the image (Figure 1). Having had his permission to share my view on it, I told him of my impression of his sun and moon as the twohalves of a mask, with the left as possibly his hidden side (actual feelings), and his right as how he may have wanted others to see

him. After sharing my impression, I noticed the immediate change in his expression. He looked sad. He then revealed that he had no one to share his fears and feelings with before, and would try to be happy for others’ sake. He appeared relieved after disclosing his thoughts. It was there and then that a connection of understanding between me (the art therapist) and Ahmad (the patient) was experienced. The artwork facilitated further insights into his difficulties and concerns. In subsequent sessions, his artworks became an outlet for his hidden feelings of inadequacy, fears and sadness. Eventually, it also became a tool for him to gain insight into his strengths and his source of hope for living. In recounting this incident, I am reminded again of the uniqueness of an individual’s artwork which can express who he/she is – his/her experience, feelings, values, beliefs, thoughts, etc. So, in making art, “Are we to paint what's on the face, what's inside the face, or what's behind it?” Perhaps, only for art therapy, it is the latter question “what’s behind it” that the art therapist seeks to understand in order for the healing of the heart and soul to begin.

Research in Residence By Tim Zeelie

The Associate Artist Research Programme (AARP) is a two-year research residency at The Substation. Currently supporting four Associate Artists, the AARP encourages the development of Effendy Ibrahim interdisciplinary art research, Noor Artistic Director of practice, and process. Two AARP The Substation events are scheduled to take place in March, an exhibition by Grace Tan (kwodrent) and a performance-lecture series by Bani Haykal. Tim Zeelie asked The Substation’s Artistic Director, Noor Effendy Ibrahim, about the AARP, and its two upcoming events. TZ: The AARP is a relatively new residency programme, and probably the first of its kind in Singapore. Why do you feel the need to support process and research in art? It’s not as much about supporting process and research in art, which The Substation has always been committed to, but more about identifying and executing sound strategies to sustain these processes. And sustaining them has less to do with the economic side of things, and more to do with the need to nurture and instill a sense of value and appreciation in artistic process and research in society. The aim of the AARP is for artists to identify communities that are not currently involved in the arts, and to collaborate with them, and together recognise and articulate that art is not just a product, but a critical and effective tool of learning and unlearning. TZ: Experimental in nature, Grace Tan’s MM is a research project that translates mathematical principles and musical structures into forms and prototypes. The upcoming exhibition will feature research materials, structures, and models in various stages of development. Why do you think it important to exhibit, question and critique works that are still under development? It is important primarily because The Substation is not an arts venue, but a critical and rigorous space for artistic discovery and 12

The Substation Soapbox development. The Substation constantly reconfigures itself as an open studio, supporting a varied and diverse range of contemporary art practices and disciplines. One of the fundamental beliefs here is that artists do not work in isolation. Constant open engagement and dialogue with other arts practitioners and interested members of the public are effective ways of testing processes, forms of research and the development of artists’ works. This is an approach that contributes towards the idea of sustainability. TZ: Bani Haykal’s rethinking music is a series of performancelectures that seeks to deconstruct perceptions about music, and examine the value and purpose in music’s ability to reflect identity. How do you think rethinking music will contribute to the way music as an art form has been perceived and treated in Singapore and at The Substation? I am hoping that rethinking music will remind us of how easy it is to listen. Seriously. To get a taste for process and participation, visit The Substation Gallery from 14 – 18 March to see Bani Haykal’s rethinking music. Grace Tan’s exhibition MM will be exhibited from 22 March – 5 April. For more information about these events, or about the AARP, visit www.substation.org

My Secret Garden ArtGlass commission By B. Jane Cowie

Art Glass Solutions Pte Ltd was established in 2008 to enrich the lives of many through the creation of quality artworks. Since then, as Creative Director of the company, my practice as a glass artist has certainly changed. Previously I focused on being a ‘production studio glass blower’; now predominately I undertake ‘large art glass installation commissions’ as part of a larger team of architects, interior designers, contractors and glass makers. A recently completed commission in a private home in Singapore was created in response to a photo taken by the client himself. The photo became the foundation of the conceptual development and overall aesthetic of the artwork. The client’s interest in photography and my interest in modern image making processes and technology emerged as key concepts. Traditional printing techniques used overlays of coloured dots to create an image, and now computers process images with square pixels. My idea was to not simply reproduce the clients’ photo in a larger scale, but to re-interpret the image into another medium, accentuate the image making process by enlarging the pixel size and then separating the image into squares to further highlight the process of image construction. Each panel becomes an abstracted colour field in itself while together it creates the overall image. Expanding and accentuating collaborations with other artists as well as introducing the traditional glassmaking technique of glass engraving were important aspects of this artwork. I wanted to highlight the beauty and simplicity of the engraved line on glass within the complexity of the laminated photographed image. I asked Dominic Fondé, to respond to the client’s photo with a line drawing, and as he was not told what the photo was of – landscape, cell structure or photo of outer space – his response was then an interpretation of the photo itself. This drawing was then scanned into the computer, broken up into 189 individual sections and printed onto A4 paper. Using these prints as a guide, Michelle Zheng drew the abstracted lines on each panel and then engraved the lines on each individual glass panels. Throughout the process there were crossovers from hand drawn line, to computer rendered pixel, to ink jet printing to the engraved line. The engraving appears to float in front of the computer generated coloured pixel squares and can only clearly be seen against the darker areas of the image. In places the line seems to ‘disappear’ as it seems that the hand skills of drawing disappear with the introduction of new technology. Yet the drawn line is

remains a key element of art making and can be seen clearly in the right light. The combination of modern image making processes, new and traditional glassmaking techniques and the skill / hand craft of drawing and engraving alludes to the changes occurring in contemporary art making as technology continues to develop. Hand making skills are disappearing as machines increasingly do the job faster and better, especially in industries where precision and accuracy are required and/or preferred. So where do artists fit into these industries and modern day technological processes? As an artist, how do I sustain a practice within current culture, mass manufacturing and modern day technologies? One answer is that artists don’t only provide technique and skill, they more importantly provide the idea and develop the creative concepts to be presented in new and innovative ways. My Secret Garden, initially a response to the client’s interest in photography, the space in which the artwork was installed and my interest in modern day image making. It emerged from the collaborative creative process as an artwork with layers of meaning, numerous different glassmaking techniques and a variety of traditional and modern image making processes. This palimpsest of techniques and traditional skills combine to create an artwork of colour and beauty as well as an artwork of meaning and intent. B. Pop and Contemporary Fine Art October 2012 Preview

Centrally located on Orchard Road and entering its third year, Pop and Contemporary Fine Art can be found within the serenity of Palais Renaissance where it continues to push forward its pioneering vision of only showcasing Blue Chip artists from the Pop and Contemporary genres. Whilst emerging artists may come and go and their prices fluctuate accordingly, Blue Chip artists fair much better over a sustained period of time, it's a cliché, but then most clichés are based in fact! Pop and Contemporary Fine Art is also quite unique in that it owns all of the inventory that is showcased in the gallery, thus giving it complete control over the pricing and the quality of the artwork shown. “Very simply if the artwork is not good enough for us then it's certainly not good enough for our clientele” asserts the owner and director of Pop and Contemporary Fine Art, Saskia Joosse. “We are fully focused on client satisfaction and offer a more bespoke service which is tailored to the needs of our clients and the busy lifestyles that they lead, which in turn, has led to many satisfied referrals as a result” concludes Saskia. After having held the highly successful and acclaimed "The Dots Within" Yayoi Kusama exhibition last year, this year looks set to be full of excitement and anticipation with two major offsite exhibitions planned for October.

We are thrilled to be presenting "The Olympic Spirit" Burton Morris collection as it will be the first time that it has ever been shown in Asia. Sibylle Bergemann Photographs

11 Mount Sophia Block B The photographs of Berlin-born Sibylle Bergemann (1941 - 2010), one of the leading contemporary German photographers, are awe-inspiring for one because of the diversity of their subject matter and second for their astonishing insights and sensitivity. Bergemann commands subjects such as fashion, reportage, photographic essays, urban and rural Thomas, from the series 'RambaZamba' – Theatre of the Sonnenuhr (Sundial) workshop for the landscapes as well as group mentally handicapped and others in the portraits in an equally self- Kulturbrauerei in Berlin, Polaroid relating to Woyzeck(en), 1997. © Sibylle Bergemann assured manner. Having worked exhaustingly with the medium Polaroid, and almost exclusively with b/w photography, Bergemann belongs to a group of photographers who use colour as a constitutive element in the construction of a meaning, and not as an illustration device. Bergemann's works express a critical analysis of the reality during the times of the GDR. Her precise observations of hidden contexts is shown in the peculiar details of her photographs. Bergemann’s photographs play with the longing of the observer who appears to be drawn into a thoughtful and melancholic mood filled with eerie, dreamlike states-of-being, while looking at her photographs. The complexity found in these photographs creates the unmistakable, personal style of the Berlin-based photographer. Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal Beyond 15 minutes of fame

17 Mar – 12 Aug ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands® 10 Bayfront Avenue

Meet Andy Warhol, the face of Pop Art, at the latest traveling exhibition to open at ArtScience Museum. Andy Warhol: 15 Minute Eternal will open on 17 March with over 260 paintings, drawings, sculptures, film, and video of the legendary artist’s works, marking the first time such an extensive collection is exhibited in Singapore. Andy Warhol was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as Pop Art. He was renowned for using mass production of popular culture such as advertising, comic books, and brand products, as the basis of his art. Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal will feature his masterpieces including Jackie (1964), Marilyn Monroe (1967), Campbell’s Soup Can (1961), Silver Liz (1963), Time Capsule 51 (1970’s), The Last Supper (1986), and numerous iconic Self-Portraits. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a wide range of associated documents, interactive timelines, photographs, and archival material. The exhibition will contain sections dedicated to different phases of the artist's career in a chronological manner. In the “Early Years” section, visitors will see artworks from Warhol's childhood and early works as a successful commercial artist in the 1940s. “The Factory Years” section will feature Warhol's transition from a commercial artist to a business artist during the 1960s. It was also during this period that he created the iconic masterpieces of the Campbell's Soup can and silk screen portraits of celebrities such as Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. During the 1960s, Warhol's art studio became the meeting place for artists and musicians. The art studio, known as the Silver Factory, was entirely covered with foil and silver paint. It was also here that Warhol began the mass production of artworks. Paying homage to Warhol's art studio, the exhibition will dedicate space to a recreation of The Silver Factory. To provide an interesting interactive experience, the space will feature costumes for visitors to dress up and be “a star for 15 minutes”, a photo booth to capture the experience, a reproduction of the couch from

the Silver Factory from which visitors can enjoy his avant garde films, and the whimsical Silver Clouds (1966) piece made of floating helium balloons. Warhol’s celebrated use of Polaroids in photographing celebrities during the 1970s will be explored in the “Exposures” section. During this time, Andy Warhol focused on commissioned portraits to fund his interest in experimental film. This shift in focus is evident in the genre of art works on display such as advertisements and silverprint photographs, which reflect Warhol’s fascination with fame and glamour. It is also during this time that he started creating time capsules which contained meaningful items collected from the various periods of his life. Out of the over 600 time capsules Warhol created throughout his lifetime, visitors will be able to view one that contains over 50 magazines and books. During the 1980s, having reached the pinnacle of success in the art world, Warhol ventured into television media with Andy Warhol’s T.V. and Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes which visitors will be able to watch in “The Last Supper” section. The diversity of his last decade of creation includes works such as the Endangered Species series, Rorschach series and Oxidation Paintings. The exhibition concludes with The Last Supper and Self Portrait, two iconic masterpieces he created at the very end of his life that are monumental in both scale and the impact they had in the art industry.

Rain Rhythm An Exhibition of Recent Works by Ye Jian Qing

15 – 31 Mar iPRECIATION Singapore, 1 Fullerton Square, #01-08

Born in Ninghai, Zhejiang Province, China in 1972, Ye Jian Qing obtained his Master and PhD degree from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. Currently a full time artist, he also holds a teaching position in the Fresco Department at his alma mater. Acclaimed by art critics and collectors alike, Ye’s work has been exhibited in reputable art institutions worldwide such as the Central Art College in Madrid and the Art Gallery of China in Beijing. His opuses have also been featured at international art fairs, including Art Taipei and the Korea International Art Fair in 2007, and Bridge New York in 2008. In 2010, Ye became the youngest artist to have held a solo exhibition at the prestigious National Art Museum of China (NAMOC). Ye’s artworks are shaped by reflections on the relationship between painting and photography, as evident in his popularly known Hutong and Cityscape Series. Grounded in his profound knowledge in Chinese traditional culture, the artist infused the Chinese aesthetic ethos into western photographic imageries of today. Effortlessly blended the Chinese ink-and-wash technique into his oil paintings, the result is a renewed poetic expression that speaks to the contemporary generation. After the launch of the new series Exploring the Bodhisattva in 2010 in NAMOC, Ye was invited to Singapore as Resident Artist in 2011. From there he began conceptualization on a new phase of artistic creations, and reinterpreted his previous renowned series in a fresh light. Witnessed in the new works of Ye’s Cityscape series is a drastic change in their emanated aura; shifting from a bright color palette to the cold monochromatic greyish tone, the paintings invoke a quiet yet ambivalent sentiment as if one is viewing an old black and white photograph, and the monochromatic color vividly expresses, both pictorially and metaphorically, the coldness of a city. Currently resided in Beijing, the portrayal of the city rain scenes has been a powerful emotive portal for the artist. The downpours depicted in his recent Cityscape paintings are dramatized under his signature lens-mediated perspective, with rain splashes blocking the 26

view, what presented to viewers is the obscure silhouettes of giant skyscrapers and busy traffic, hinting at an unpredictable path of the fleeting urban development. Though expressed in Western medium, Ye’s works are nonetheless aesthetically and culturally Chinese. Bearing the cultural symbols and values inherited from one’s historical root, water is one of the poetic symbols recurrently appeared in his creations. In traditional Chinese culture, water is spiritual, symbolic of empowerment, purification and fluidity. In Ye’s Cityscape paintings, the bold and fluid brushstrokes vivify the rain scene and materialize the ever-shifting nature of a city development, it also relays the artist’s desire to purge the tiresome mechanical city that he now calls home. The artist at the same time transformed water into tranquil lakes in a series of new paintings, allowed their charming reflections to purify one’s heart, and to open up a psychological space for contemplation. Anchored firmly to the Chinese traditional culture and his unique aesthetic, Ye’s artistic endeavor not only attracted the eyes and moved the hearts, but it also offered viewers of diverse cultures an alternative outlook to the Chinese contemporary art world, as well as to the newly interpreted Chinese culture that is relevant of our time.

Singapore Dance Theatre Presents

Swan Lake 15 – 18 Mar Esplanade Theatre

The Singapore Dance Theatre opens Season 2012 with one of the greatest classical ballets of all time, Swan Lake. This production premiered in December 2007 and was warmly received by both critics and audiences. Through evocative music and skilful dance, Swan Lake tells the tale of Odette, the tragic Princess captured by the evil sorcerer, Von Rothbart, and turned into a swan. Under the curse, she can only reveal her true human form at night and only the promise of true love from a man who is pure of heart and deed can rescue her and render the spell powerless. One night, Prince Siegfried finds the Princess and enamoured by her beauty, he professes his undying love to her. However, the Prince is deceived by the sorcerer and, in a cruel twist of fate, gives the sorcerer’s daughter, Odile, his promise of devotion instead, unwittingly breaking his vow of love to Odette. Now, only Siegfried’s defeat of the sorcerer can free them both and reunite them in their love. The first Swan Lake was choreographed by Julius Reisinger and premiered in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre and was Tchaikovsky’s first ballet music attempt. It was in 1895 that Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov created their masterpiece that would later have them deemed synonymous with Swan Lake by ballet enthusiasts. Since then, many versions and interpretations of Swan Lake have been produced, including a thirty-five minute piece choreographed by George Balanchine in 1951, set as the first traditional ballet of the New York City Ballet repertoire. With spectacular staging, resplendent raiment, and breathtaking ballet movement, audiences can expect to be treated to a stunning masterwork of one of the world’s most beloved ballet, with Singapore Dance Theatre’s production of Swan Lake. The Singapore Dance Theatre has performed Swan Lake before, once in December 2007 and later, in December 2009. The 2012 version is expected to build on the previous versions as the company has developed in terms of repertoire, number of performances as well as experience and capability of the dancers.

Illuminations A solo exhibition by Aung Kyaw Htet

Till 11 Mar Chan Hampe Galleries @ Raffles Hotel Raffles Hotel Arcade #01-04, 328 North Bridge Road

Being a devout Buddhist who grew up in a small Burmese village has undoubtedly played a large influence in Aung Kyaw Htet's artistic practice, as seen through his exquisite balance of realism and sensitivity of subject, using varying shades of grey and a considered use of colour in his solo exhibition Illuminations. The young enigmatic monks and nuns are portrayed with a delicate dignity that speaks directly to the artist's dedication to the Buddhist faith – an important foundation to his Burmese culture, in the face of disparaging conditions and poverty that prevails in Burma. For more than a decade Aung has quietly produced some of the most coherent, nuanced, and resonant bodies of artworks from Burma. While his depictions of novice monks and nuns may unleash questions about the slippery social environment of Burma and the role of romanticism under such conditions, he instead mobilises a reserved and ordered look into the inquiry of social isolation and spiritual identity with a contemporary emotional mannerism that represents these subjects as irredeemably human.

Cooling Off Day A portrait of Singaporeans

Till 11 Mar SOTA Drama Theatre, Singapore A production by W!LD RICE

Back by popular demand! The sell-out hit show of the 2011 MAN Singapore Theatre Festival makes its triumphant return to the stage! If you missed it the first time round (shame on you) or if you’d just like to see it again, this is your chance to catch the re-staging of Cooling Off Day, the popular production by W!LD RICE.

Why do Singaporeans vote? What issues influenced their votes? What does citizenship mean to them? In the months running up to the 2011 watershed elections, Alfian Sa’at interviewed Singaporeans to discover their responses to these questions. From the comic to the serious, from the fearful to the hopeful, their voices form a portrait of Singaporeans concerned about their role in shaping the country’s future. Funny, moving, and true, Cooling Off Day reveals how political views are not just the hot air of coffeeshop talk.

All That's Left Has Gone To Sleep. The artist's childhood utopia, the playground, is one that still evokes treasured memories of an exciting place where his creativity was first cultivated, so it is of little surprise that this is the focus of his latest series of paintings in All That's Left Has Gone To Sleep. Dyn remembers the playground as a meeting place for new and old friends where adveture always waited, a time when life was much more simple and the lure of climbing ropes and slippery slides was a world only limited by his imagination. Dyn obtained his Diploma in Fine Arts in painting from LaSalle – SIA College of the Arts, Singapore. He later received his Bachelor’s Degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia and went on to get his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Open University at LaSalle – SIA College of the Arts. 07 – 28 Mar

The Sufi and the Bearded Man: Remembering a Keramat in Contemporary Singapore. The exhibition re-members the keramat of a 19th century Sufi traveller from the Middle East who lives on in contemporary Singapore through her miracles and her shrine which was recently removed. Re-membering the keramat has involved a two-year long project of collaborating with Ali, an intermediary of the Sufi and custodian of the mausoleum referred to by fellow devotees as "the bearded man". These conversations culminated in the keramat and its life-worlds entering a museum, a transition animated by the display of photographic evidence, material remains or artifacts, anecdotal histories and related documents. Urban Jungle depicts what our modern society rejects. We accumulate trash everyday; we throw out something that is broken, old and worn-out or simply things that have been kept for a long time that becomes uninteresting now. To Gonneke Verschoor, she sees a pattern of history through layers of rust; intriguing patterns surrounding spots of rust and various textures due to the varying levels of the deterioration of rust. Because in her opinion, our society attempts this race in search of newer things every day, leaving the things that are disappearing, even more extraordinary and appealing. The artist will be conducting a workshop in March; interested individuals please send your enquiries to arts@sculpturesq.com.sg 10 – 26 Mar

Besides nurturing an appreciation for art, the works are specially selected to encourage lively discussions and develop creative and analytical thinking among our young visitors. The current exhibition at SAM at 8Q, Everyday Objects, invites visitors to take a second look at familiar things through the eyes of artists from Singapore and Southeast Asia, where everyday things we know and sometimes take for granted are portrayed in a different light, making us think twice about their function and their relation to other objects.
