“I will show you fear in a handful of dust” - Re-Wilding The Waste Land is I Fagiolini’s creative response to T.S. Eliot’s groundbreaking poem The Waste Land (100th anniversary in 2022), mixing music for voices with the poem and mindful of David Attenborough’s ‘witness statement’ plea to Re-Wild: musical desolation flowers into a subtly positive outpouring of old and new music.

National Youth Jazz Orchestra celebrates Amy Winehouse

“The National Youth Jazz Orchestra certainly put the youth back into jazz” declared one critic – and it’s always a big night at Saffron Hall when these phenomenal young artists are in town. But this year, it’s personal, as they present an emotionally-charged tribute to one of their greatest alumna, Amy Winehouse – her life, her musical legacy, and her enduring position as one of the UK’s most thrilling and talented musicians.

Aaron Copland An Outdoor Overture

George Gershwin Concerto in F

Antonín Dvorˇák Symphony No.9

“From the New World”

An Outdoor Overture was written in 1938 for young musicians to perform and is a beautifully lyrical example of Copland’s work. Gershwin’s Concerto in F was written in 1925, one year after the hugely successful Rhapsody in Blue. It uses jazz styles within it that we all recognise including a bluesy slow movement featuring the trumpet, a cakewalk and ragtime elements. Dvorˇák’s everpopular New World Symphony, full of American folk tunes and the famous Largo brings SWSO’s season to a dramatic close.
