HI, WELCOME TO SAE!

I’m Hayden, a Bachelor of Film graduate.

I’ll start off by saying you are in great hands at SAE… studying here really was the experience of a lifetime. I got to explore my passion, meet like minded people, master new skills, and learn the ins and outs of the film and creative industries.

The best thing about SAE, besides studying something you’re passionate about, is that you’re surrounded by facilities, friends and mentors that help you - in an environment that supports your future career.

It’s a great place to make new friends, work across other disciplines and collaborate creatively on new ideas. I still keep in touch with some of my friends from SAE, and we continue to create content together.

Getting the chance to learn from lecturers who have been there and done it, and hear their stories of working in the industry was incredible. They also helped point me in the right direction when I was looking for work, and they happen to know some of my colleagues at Ninewhere I now work.

Since graduating, I’ve been at Australia’s biggest free to air network. I’m a versioning promotions producer, which means I create different things like trailers and promotions for the shows that are shown across Nine’s channels.

Outside the 9-5, I haven’t stopped! I’ve been busy doing independent film and freelance work, and have had films featured at festivals, on SBS, and streaming services.

What I learnt at SAE helped me craft and hone my skills, unpack and understand the film industry, and taught me how to put into practice what I now do at Nine, and as an independent filmmaker.

ALUMNI SUCCESS

Aldo is a two-time Grammy recognised audio engineer for his work with Hans Zimmer on the soundtracks for Dune and The Lion King. He’s collaborated with some of the most prolific composers in Hollywood on films and shows including Top Gun: Maverick, The Mandalorian, The Last of Us, and Wonder Woman 1984.

Dune’s Oscar-winning soundtrack has been the most satisfying project Aldo’s been a part of.

“I was there from the beginning, and could see how the ideas developed from scratch - that was mind blowing for me.”

At SAE, Aldo studied for a Bachelor of Music Production, and learnt about the fundamentals of producing music and business.

“Getting to meet fellow creatives who had other passions was very satisfying, as we were then able to collaborate on music and other projects,” he said.

“In my second year, I learnt how to put together a business plan, which was really beneficial; particularly when I moved to LA.”

For those who want to follow in his footsteps and engineer film soundtracks in the future, Aldo gave some valuable tips.

“Understanding the basics of audio production is crucial, and somewhere like SAE will give you the foundational skills you need to start off in the industry.”

Rachel is a product manager at web and mobile games studio, Not Doppler, and has worked on successful titles like Crash of Cars and Fast and Furious: Takedown.

“There’s two sides to my role; being creative and analytical,” Rachel said. “I’m involved in thinking up new features for our games - a part of that is working with our programmers and artists.”

At Not Doppler, Rachel has been a part of five star rated mobile game, Crash of Cars. The title, which encourages players to collect as many crowns as possible before being destroyed, has had over 55 million downloads.

From an early age, Rachel enthused that she had an interest in video games. “I always had a passion for them growing up, and never really grew out of it. When I got to year 11, I just knew that I wanted to do something to do with entertainment or computers.”

After leaving school, Rachel studied a Bachelor of Game Design at SAE. “What was so appealing about SAE was it was a two year degree, and it was quite specialised in what I wanted to do.

“I found it really beneficial to have this streamlined experience, where I got to meet and talk to teachers that had been in the industry. Learning from a game developer’s perspective was really beneficial, and at the time it was quite unique for where I was looking to go with my career.”

Enrico is a lay-out artist at Disney owned visual effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic. He has worked on some huge blockbusters including The Batman, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“I now do everything from camera tracking to animation, blocking, and set extension - it’s essentially the bread and butter of the department,” Enrico said.

“I always had the dream of working for a large studio like ILM, Pixar or Dreamworks, so to actually be a part of these huge projects now is amazing. Having the opportunity to learn new skills everyday, and being pushed by colleagues you work with, in what you can achieve, is really awesome.”

Enrico talks glowingly of his lecturers, following his time studying for a Bachelor of Animation at SAE.

“I had some great teachers, I give them a lot of credit for where I am,” he said. “Whenever I hit a career milestone, I make sure I shoot them a message.”

To those students who aren’t sure where they’re heading, Enrico gives some sound advice. “I would say just stick with it. Be proactive and do more than just the minimum; it’s going that extra mile that will help you progress in your career.”

Eliza is the director and founder of The Content Lab, a creative agency that specialises in photography, storytelling, video production and design content for a range of clients including Snap Fitness, Surf Life Saving Queensland, Southern Cross Austereo, and Go1. She’s also collaborated with acclaimed hyperrealistic artist, CJ Hendry.

Eliza explained her ability to adapt her business has meant she’s been booked out for months in advance. “Every company needs content, so it’s about figuring out what you want to specialise in,” she said. “There's no limit to the work available, whether it’s copywriting, design, or photography, I offer a flexible service to suit what clients need.”

Having studied the Bachelor of Interactive Media and Graphic Design at SAE, Eliza said the accelerated course enabled her to get into the industry sooner.

“Being able to finish my degree and start my career at the age of 19 was a huge plus for me, as it meant I got four years in the industry before I started my business.”

Eliza added that the learning style at SAE meant she could be more independent and spend time on where she wanted to focus her skills.

“The opportunity to hire top-end gear and book out studios meant I could play around and experiment, which I otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to do.”

In January 2023 our Adelaide campus relocated to Franklin Street. Our sensational new campus is located right in the heart of Adelaide CBD near Victoria Square. Our bachelor degree is all about building your character and credentials by giving you hands-on experience in a broad range of topics related to the animation and computer graphics industries, such as character animation (2D/3D), visual storytelling, 3D modelling & computer graphics as well as visual effects & motion graphics.

Develop your skills within a studio environment gaining experience with software including Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, ToonBoom Harmony, Substance Painter, Unreal Engine 4, Unity, SideFX Houdini, Foundry NukeX, Pixologic ZBrush and Adobe Creative Suite and so on, to help bring your ideas to life.

In preparation for an industry that commands agility and adaptability, you’ll cut your creative teeth on projects initially in partnership with your course peers. LIFE AS A DIGITAL NOMAD AND MASTER OF CREATIVE INDUSTRIES STUDENT.

Angie Davis is a documentary filmmaker and creativity coach. A self described digital nomad, she travels the world with her family to pursue her passion and adventure. Angie has just been announced as the recipient of the Master of Creative Industries scholarship, we chat with her further about her enviable lifestyle, career and studies.

As a working documentary filmmaker, what drives your passion for this medium and how do you choose the subject matter for your films?

I’m driven by stories that evoke empathy and cultivate compassion in the audience. The unsung heroes, individuals who overcome significant challenges in their lives, stories about the environment and social impact.

I have been traveling extensively for the past four years as a digital nomad, and it’s the people I meet and the places I visit that inspire the subject matter.

Why did you choose to study a Master of Creative Industries with SAE?

I chose to do the Master of Creative Industries with SAE because I wanted to really dive deeper in filmmaking and my creative practice.

It’s been a fantastic decision and I love the flexibility to be remote – I am still a digital nomad and planning to be back in France for most of this year

– and being surrounded by likeminded people from all walks of the creative world is very rewarding. The mentorship with the master’s is extremely beneficial and most of the time I feel as though I am collaborating on my real-world projects and contributing to others’, rather than just studying. That’s the beauty of the program, you don’t have to give up your career for a couple years to participate, rather you can weave in your professional works and I think that’s win win for most people.

You also seem to live quite the nomadic lifestyle with your family, how does studying the Master’s online fit in?

The flexibility of studying the Master’s online is what attracted me to do this program with SAE.

All of my work is done remotely; my team is scattered all over the globe. Being a digital nomad requires a lot of flexibility and this program offers me that.

The webinars bring that face-to-face contact and the screen factor doesn’t hinder that connection at all. This is the future, remote collaboration, and I am particularly excited as we enter into this new age of globalisation of the Internet where communities in developing countries such as India, Africa, and throughout South America, have the same interconnectivity as we do here in the West. We have so much to share with each other and the more global these programs can become, I think the more we can all learn and the better the world can be.

FROM BLUEY TO ED SHEERAN: ALEX TURNS VOLUME UP ON HER CAREER

Alex Reaper is a 23 year old audio engineer who has worked on shows around Queensland featuring Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Lorde, Elton John, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, U2, Snoop Dog, Queen, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Bon Iver. Alex shared how her time studying at SAE propelled her to work on Bluey and with some of the world’s greatest artists.

During her five year career, Alex has worked on over 200 shows, including Ed Sheeran’s record breaking Australian tour in 2023.

“I was with the touring crew for eight days, and a team of us would be putting up six steel masts, working with almost eight kilometres of power cables, and we’d be doing everything from audio to lighting. I got the chance to chat to Ed, and he was lovely. He was so grateful for what we do, because he was well aware of how big the production is - it’s massive!”

Alex did the accelerated two year Bachelor of Audio degree at SAE Brisbane. The skills that she learnt at SAE, helped her secure paid employment in the live music industry. “Learning about teamwork and organisation - you can’t underestimate how valuable that is.”

The growth of her audio and communication skills while studying, Alex explained, made her the audio engineer and person she is today.

“Aside from learning the fundamental audio skills that you need to be successful in live sound, being able to build on my interpersonal skills changed my life,” Alex explained. “There’s no way I could have stepped into the industry and have the career I’ve had so far, without those experiences at SAE.”

Learning from experienced audio lecturers who have been there and done it in the industry, was of real benefit to Alex to get where she is now. “I really loved talking to the lecturers about live sound and networking. They were really knowledgeable about the industry, and didn’t sugar coat it, which was what I needed.”

The value of networking was repaid when Alex got the opportunity to work on the hit tv series, Bluey. “I wouldn’t have got that gig if it wasn’t for one of the SAE lecturers recommending an APRA meeting promoting females in the industry, back in 2017,” Alex shared. “I was the only one from my cohort who went, where I met a lady called Jazz.”

“She was so impressed at that meeting in 2017 that she later recommended me to step into her role to partner with the animation and composition teams, and mix the audio as well as session management between disciplines on Bluey. It sounds simple, but networking is critical to building connections and gaining employment opportunities.”

Our entry requirements are your determination and creative potential - we’ve got you covered for the rest. All you need to show us to start studying a Diploma, Associate or Bachelor degree is one of the following:

Completion of Secondary Studies (High School), assessed equivalent of Australian Year 12 or equivalent; OR

Experience-Based Entry for applicants who do not meet the requirements of entry criteria 1 or 2 above.
