Handy Golf Terms Par The pre determined number of hits that a professional golfer should need to complete the hole . Albatross Another word for 3 shots under par so if it’s a par 5 hole and you get the ball in the hole in just 2 shots. That’s an Albatross Birdie Another word for 1 shot under par so if it’s a par 5 hole and you get the ball in the hole in 4 shots. That’s a Birdie Bogey Another word for 1 shot over par so if it’s a par 5 hole and you get the ball in the hole in 6 shots. That’s a Bogey Eagle Another word for 2 shots under par so if it’s a par 5 hole and you get the ball in the hole in 3 shots. That’s a Eagle. Divot This is the turf that is removed from the ground when you hit a shot. The divot MUST be replaced before you move on.

Drop When your ball is lost or lands in a place that is impossible to hit from, you can drop the ball from arm’s length at shoulder height onto the course. Fairway The short-grass area between the tee and the green Ball Marker Thin flat item (eg. coin) used to mark the position of a ball on the green to prevent your ball obstructing other player’s shots. Four-ball 4 people playing golf together Match Play Competition scored by number of holes won or lost. I.e. player 1 gets to the hole in 5 shots, player 2 gets to the hole in 6 shots. So player 1 wins the hole. Medal Play / Stroke Play Where you count the number of shots it’s taken to get to the ball in the hole. If you are playing a competition, the lowest number of overall hits around the course wins. Pin The flagstick which you will find in each hole of the course.

Practice Facilities West Chiltington Golf Club has some great facilities for golfers to practice not only their short game (putting and chipping) but also their swing and distance shots in our driving range.

Putting Green

Driving Range

Practice Bunker

Putting Green The putting green is free to use and allows you to practice your putting from different distances and angles. Driving Range The driving has both covered and outdoor bays for you to practice in, offering panoramic views across the beautiful South Downs countryside. The yardage / distance markers you’ll see are for estimating your shot distances with different clubs and start from 50 yards and go all the way up to 250 yards. Ball costs are 15 for £1, 25 balls are £2, 50 balls are £3 and 100 balls are £5. Practice Bunker This is located to the left of the driving range and is free to use. Ideal for developing your bunker experience for when you progress onto the 18 hole course. Hiring The proshop will happily lend you clubs and shoes to help you get started on the course. To save you carrying around your clubs, you can hire a trolley for just £3. For shoes and clubs we ask for a £3 donation to the Juniors section. Please ensure you leave behind a credit card when hiring.
